PM Carpenter: Consider the mortifying irony: The president of the most powerful and one of the more literate nations on earth has been reduced to holding press conferences in which he must explain–and explain, and explain–for the edification of that nation’s most ignorant but also most internally powerful political faction that two and two make four and that bills accumulated really should be paid.

“Please proceed, Chuckie.” (Or Major Garrett? I have no clue, they all look the same, front and back)

President Obama tries to educate Chuck Todd: “So, on one side there’s spending, on the other cuts, and… are you following??”

President Obama gives up trying to educate Chuck Todd – he’s lots of things, but he’s not a miracle worker

That ‘I’m trying really, really, really hard to take you seriously, you dick, but you are not making it easy’ face

fat meat is greasy
PBO assures the Repub House
…and your ass is in the frying pan
Oh… I get it!
LOL! I dunno where THAT came from, but Bravo!!
Old folks back in the day would say it to kids who disobeyed. It meant that if you were told that you’d get in trouble for doing something, but did it anyway, then you must think that you really won’t be punished for it. Example, ‘Chile, I’ll get those legs, if you grab one more cookie before dinner.’ If the kid takes the one more cookie, then they’d hear, ‘You must not think fat meat is greasy. Now go get me a switch from the bush and bring it here, cause imma get those legs, like i said i would’. See you shouldn’t have to see the grease in the pan to believe it’s there because of the fat in the meat. You should just accept the fact that some things are a given. At least that’s how the elders around my growing up time framed it.
PBO says to Repub, I’m not going to debate the debt ceiling. They should have believed him on that point.
My grandmothers saying was “a hard head makes a sore ass”…..
The word in our neck of the woods was “soft ass”….
Now that one I know. Heard it from my grandma often!
Grandma’s don’t lie!
These youngun’s have no idea cookemom.
eggcellentt!!! Saw them at the NCO club when Cookeman was stationed in the wild, wild, west of Kansas.I expected dogies to stampede at any moment. Not the best of times for a big city, bright lights kinda girl.
You are too funny, mom!!!!!
GOP on a skewer.
What kind of sauce?
Sweet sour. Sweet for us, sour for them.
Gotcha.
Going to post my live tweets for those who missed the press conference.
Thanks, as usual, UT! You’re a gem.
feeling froggish?
PBO asks House Repubs,
jump…
You are going way back…..
oh yeah, those would be the good ol’ way back days.
FYI –
The president dealing with the press is like trying to get special learning children to understand a simple concept, but I won’t insult them because they are far smarter.
Amen to that!
Wow….I just stepped out for a few minutes and a new post is already signed, sealed and delivered.
Way to GO Ms. Chips. You are quicker than a speeding bullet. Thank you.
Good morning/afternoon everyone
What makes David Gregory think the debt ceiling hurts our President? There goes Gregory again with the vile, right wing talking points.
Loved that smack down our President gave the Koch fueled, NRA controlled White House correspondents. Chucky Toad should know by now he can’t make the President say anything he doesn’t want to. Shame on MSNBC for making this contrary fool a correspondent.
As soon as David Gregory makes a comment it is forgotten. He has no substance.
Gregory came on and I put the tv on mute, I didn’t want to hear on one that GOP mouth piece has to say. Same with Mrs. Greenspan.
Check out these tweets from Kurt Eichenwald, former Republican, author of “500 Days:”
“If GOP refuses to raise debt limit, and its faithful finally learn what happens as a result, it will be a minority party for decades.”
“The idea that the GOP would threaten the survival of the US economy to win political points shows they are no longer supporters of America.”
Morning guys! First day of Orientation on my new job today. My last job was for a “faith-based” hospital, it was run by a Presbryterian organization. This one is a Catholic organization and I kinda feel indoctrinated already. It’s much more heavy-handed that the last place. It’s doesn’t matter to me, Im not Catholic, but I’m from a “Catholic” state (we have parishes instead of counties) in a Catholic heavy city so I’m used to it. I have cringed a little at moments though when I think about people who aren’t used to the overt-ness of the message.
Anyway, I’m excited to start and get to the lab and start my training so I can get back to what I do best.
Congratulations on your new job!
UTAL, you’re masterful. I don’t know how you do it. I am tempted to sometimes tweet PBO’s brilliance, but my fingers are never fast enough to capture the quote before he’s on to another one. Thank you!!
Awww….thank you for the kind words.
I agree with Susan UTAL. You have magic fingers.
You are simply put in one word……..thefastestfingersandbrainprocessorpersonever!
What American people is Boehner talking about? All those American people who are working at all those jobs Boehner create when he became speaker. You know all the jobs jobs jobs Boehner was going to focus on. No dope ass Americans want the bills paid.
No dope ass John Boehner, Americans want the U.S. bills paid.
Love it, especially that stable boy bit. Chuckie is much crankier since the big loss of his big boss Romney.
Did anyone see any diversity with the WH press? How many Blacks, Latinos, Asian, did we see?
Brilliant, Chips. You have a rare sense of humor.
I was driving to a meeting right after UTAL’s brilliant tweets wishing PBO had said to the WHPC – look, you can only ask me about diversity at the point where your employer has a record as good as or better than mine!
The debt ceiling is the GOP’s problem. Lather, rinse, repeat.
By Greg Sargent
——————————-
Yeah, okay. The game here is: “Hey, we can’t control our crazies!!! Better give us what we want before they destroy us all!!!”
If anything, this underscores what a difficult spot John Boehner is in. Remember, Boehner is on record saying in 2011 that allowing default would mean “financial disaster” for the “world economy.” Even if it’s true that “more than half” of Republicans won’t support raising the debt ceiling unless it’s paired with draconian spending cuts, GOP leaders have the option of reaching a deal with the White House and passing it in the House with a lot of Democratic support.
If Boehner himself is already on record saying default will destroy the world economy, the substantive and political pressure on him to do this will be intense. Indeed, even some Republicans, such as Newt Gingrich and the Wall Street Journal editorial board, are warning that failing to raise the debt ceiling will invite political Armageddon for the GOP.
.
.
Nice try, but this is still on Republicans. If they are going to continue to threaten the global economy to get their way, it’s their problem.

Hey, did WordPress change something? I don’t tweets in the white boxes anymore, just as links.
I meant, I don’t see tweets posted here in the tweet boxes anymore… they’re just links.
Hoping it’s just another temporary glitchy thing Dudette, it’s a pain!
Good afternoon TODers.
I think the President is smart in not going for the executive order and coing minting “options” that are being proposed. Why give the TPGOP and their talking heads in the MSM an oportunity to criticize him for overstepping his authority. He rightly reminded the WHPC that it is Congress’ responsibility to pay our bills and raise the debt ceiling. Therefore, Congress should do its job. If they want to change the law and give that responsibility to the executive branch, then they should do that.
The TPGOP and their hacks in the MSM have an annoying habit of thinking that if they keep repeating something and yelling it as loud as they can, that makes it so. The President shows character and patience in dealing with them.
I agree with you.
utaustinliberal
fantastic tweets broken down in plain simple English. LOL, Chucky Toad has egg all over his face trying to clarify his asinine question to Andrea Mitchell.
Hear, hear – brilliant tweeting UT, thank you!
I just want to check… are tweets not showing up properly on WordPress today or is it just my computer?
Same with me. Sometimes they take a while to show up properly – other times they remain in that weird form. I’m not sure what causes this but it could be related to traffic, browser and Internet speed.
Chucky Toad the President doesn’t hate criticism; in fact he has welcomed it on numerous occasions. Does telling the Drama Queens Senators McCain and Graham ring a bell when President Obama told them to stop criticizing UN Ambassador Susan Rice and come after him?
Did the members of the WH Press Corps get their degrees from the same college Sarah Palin supposedly got her degree in journalism? Just asking.
Sounds like a pretty good guess to me Daisydem!
You betcha.
Good afternoon, Chips. Great coverage of the presser. Thank you.
From the questions they asked and frequent tantrums, I believe they and the Wasilla girl call the same college alma mater.
Yep!
That’s a good question, daisydem!
Did you see major Garrtett and Chuck Toodles try to put it back on the President? Questions straight from the RNC.
Is that the full press conference? Our TV crashed for most of it.
Watching a report out of India on “LinkAsia.” New Delhi is apparently “rape capital” of the country, with 600 reported rapes a year (in addition to many going unreported because of lack of attention by local law enforcement, according to the report). This is just ONE city and ONE country where brutality against women prevails. What a world.
I wonder if that the poll that put Congress at such a low percentage, had the press as an option from which to choose? My bet is that the press would come in even lower, had that option been available. That is, if I were a betting person.
LOL to both tweets. Not only does Chuck T have questionable credentials as a journalist, he isn’t smart enough to comprehend that you don’t try to play Gotcha with someone as intelligent as the president.
May the President should try this:
LOL! He did jojo, just not as overtly Chris Tucker!
Great tweets, Chips.
I’m probably gonna get blocked soon…
Dudette, you’re right on target. Way to go.
Thanks Susan!
A little levity for Chips and my other football heads: DT Exclusive: Alex Ferguson thanks Arsene Wenger for selling Robin van Persie.
Great coverage of the Presser … thanks to all here at TOD and to Chips for doing that for us!

Obama’s presser

Rock on, Mr. President.
Thanks for all the updates and summaries, everyone!
wow. just saw some clips. president obama is indeed taking the gloves off…in nice way, of course! just imagine what he could get done with democrats controlling the House in 2014.
aloha and good morning 4more! sorry, but i just have to make one little correction here: ‘just imagine what he WILL get done’ !!
Here, here!
Although he presented it as a question, the President pointed out that while the GOP keeps talking about reducing the deficit, [for some] that may not be their real goal. Obviously, the goal is to hurt the middle /workingclass, students, seniors, etc. by reducing or eliminating funding for programs that are important to us.
I thought this might have been the most important point the President made: You don’t really want to cut spending, You just want to take away from Those People swbluega.
Same as health care debate, set up for rascists excuses not to share.
Regarding the President being too “insular” (is that what they’re saying instead of “uppity” these days?). Let’s stroll down memory lane for the Great Chummy Moments from the GOP:
Election Night 2012:
“Mr. Obama tried to call both Mr. Boehner and the Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, but was told they were asleep.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/08/us/politics/president-obama-begins-work-on-second-term.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
“Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is signaling that at least one thing will change about his leadership during the 113th Congress: he’s telling Republicans he is done with private, one-on-one negotiations with President Obama.”
http://thehill.com/homenews/house/275295-boehner-tells-gop-hes-done-with-one-on-one-obama-talks#ixzz2HyRRMoe0
“McConnell: The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/when-did-mcconnell-say-he-wanted-to-make-obama-a-one-term-president/2012/09/24/79fd5cd8-0696-11e2-afff-d6c7f20a83bf_blog.html
Thanks for the links FiredUpinCA. I just tweeted those to Chuck Todd since he has such a short memory.
“@TheObamaDiary WH press corps is reprehensible. PBO has extended tons of invites to Congress, but they spew their own manufacturer agenda.”
I caught only the tail end of the Press Conference live; Jackie Chalmers from NYT infuriated me.
She had the gall to ask questions about two “stories” MANUFACTURED by the media.
1) “Obama doesn’t socialize with Congress”
How many GOPers from red districts would WANT to be seen with POTUS? (hint: zero)
2) “Obama’s cabinet appointments ‘lack diversity”
BS.
PBO has nominated a GRAND TOTAL of FOUR cabinet appointments; three FP (Brennan, Hagel, Kerry) and the crucial domestic secretary (Lew). MSM is so self-referential and clueless they don’t think to push back on Annie Lowrey’s abominable assertion that PBO’s cabinet lacks diversity. (Have not read, refuse to read anything by that “golden” girl snob.)
See Andrew Sullivan’s posts today about her utter contempt for the non “golden.”
http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2013/01/contempt-dripping-from-every-sentence.html
http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2013/01/contempt-dripping-from-every-sentence-ctd.html
Attention media: PBO is not a clueless, uncurious POTUS like GW Bush. He nominates candidates who can ably execute HIS strategy (unlike GW Bush who nominated the unqualified Harriet Meiers and others when seeking “diversity.”
Also. Too. Remember how Boehner rejected the President’s several invitations to the White House shortly after Boehner became Speaker, and people were speculating that it might have something to do with his drinking? President Obama also tried to invite the GOP for Superbowl parties, cocktail socials (very early on in his presidency), etc. He was rebuffed. Don’t need to be kicked twice to know it hurts…
Its time for real journalist. Ron Burgundy.
Fixed the link for ya Redbird, thank you – perfect!!
My take on President Obama’s Pressor: We, Americans are not deadbeats!!!!! I completely agree, we take responsibility; and those who don’t are!
…….well yeah, now that we got rid of Joe Walsh……
Yup yup…so true.
seeing some of the clips i guess i see the point the media and republicans are always making….all those softball questions show the media takes it easy on president obama and will never ask a tough “gotcha” question such as, “what do you read?” which they did for the quitting governor from alaska. librul meeedeeah!!!

The full news conference:
Hey we can see the tweets again! Yay!
TPM gets it. Its headline? “Please Proceed, GOP”.
Nice!!!!
Love that headline. I reallly like when PBO has pressers. They are aired locally and nationally. He is really getting ahead of this debt ceiling and he is standing his ground. Also really like that he called out the republicans. If the government is shut down, I beleive the repugs will be blamed.
Oops meant “believe”.
Dems hold a trump card in debt limit showdown
By Greg Sargent
————————————
On top of all this, Obama’s press conference today, in which he again reiterated that there will be no negotiating around the debt limit, suggests he’ll be publicly cranking up the pressure in the days ahead. “If Congressional Republicans refuse to pay America’s bills on time, Social Security checks and veterans benefits will be delayed,” Obama said today. Polls show Obama is far more trusted than Republicans right now, which could further increase the sense of pressure to cave on the debt limit.
Indeed, Ornstein says Senate Dems might even just undertake to pass a clean debt limit hike without any House GOP bill to amend. As Ornstein puts it: “There is a scenario in which Dems can force a clean debt limit hike.”

I love how she tells this story. It’s so moving, and it really captures the awesomeness of that historic moment (from one history maker to another) – and the fact that the President is the one who gets waited for, even if it takes all day! Lovely – thanks for the trip down memory lane.

“We have a Chevy Volt. Hubby went to the store & as he was putting bag in car, a guy in a van covered w/Romney stickers pulled in beside him, jumped out & yelled “Did you see that speech!” Hubby said “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Guy said “Well, you’re driving an “Obama Car” & I’m gonna break the windows, then he shoved & kicked him. Hubby punched the guy in the jaw, his glasses flew & he fell to the ground. Hubby drove away. These people are crazy, insane, dangerous. Nobody is boss of what kind of car anyone has. Glad to see that you follow @KurtEichenwald. I think he’s on to something by “adopting” little Noah Pozner (one of more than two dozen victims of Sandy Hook massacre).
When it comes time to contact Congressmen/women, every voter should “adopt” one Sandy Hook victim and plead to Congress to not forget that person when they cast their gun safety vote.

If that is true he is even more pathetic than he showed in the campaign.
It was Ann, not Mitt. Although the sentiment would be the same.
she must miss the spotlight, and all the microphones in her face. she and sarah failin’ could have a reality show together, where they compare notes on strategies for big hair.
Was it Ann or possibly Rafalca?
Good grief. All the Romney’s just need to go back to whatever the hell it is they do all day.

‘ The voices inside the head of Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin are unanimous in their dislike for Chuck Hagel, the former Republican senator from Nebraska who is the president’s nominee for Secretary Of Defense. I think this is an unusual display of harmony for the voices inside Jennifer Rubin’s head since, during the presidential campaign just past, all the voices in Jennifer Rubin’s head had different opinions regarding Willard Romney. Was he merely awesome? Super awesome? Super-duper awesome? Super-duper-infinity awesome? Or was he a steaming super-duper-infinity awesome hunk of brilliantly coiffed man-meat who could make the bobsleds run on time while hitting Lady Liberty’s G-spot until she crooned “Columbia, The Gem Of The Ocean.” Now, though, all the voices hate Chuck Hagel. It must be a lot quieter around Rubin’s ears these days. ‘

gotta hand it to the guy – he’s a great writer.
this entire piece is hilarious–and thankfully he doesn’t feel obliged to poke a stick at the president.
he can go batshit crazy on the President, that’s for sure and of course I get really pissed. But when that wit and intelligence is aimed at RWNJ’s, no one writes better. He reminds me of the late, great Molly Ivins and Mike Royko (boy, I’m showing my age!).
Nah, 57, I never missed a Mike Royko column in the days when we lived in Chicago. Loved his writing. So we all grow old together.

Former South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford said she will not run for Congress, USA Today reports.
Said Sanford: “I think my job as mom right now is much more important, much more rewarding and much more productive. The idea of killing myself to run for a seat for the privilege of serving in a dysfunctional body under John Boehner when I have an eighth-grader at home just really doesn’t make sense to me.” [.....]

most eighth graders are more reasonable, more responsible, and more pleasant than the speaker. also, when you tell them to do their chores, they grumble, but they do it.
Ooouch, that had to sting…..
Like a wet leather glove! Whack!
Charles Pierce is extremely disappointed in her decision. She would have been running against her ex-husband and he was looking forward to that.
She garnered lots of sympathy with the Appalachian Trail mistress ordeal. But I saw her interviewed, and I suspect the reason she doesn’t want to serve under Boehner is because he is not conservative enough for her. She was rt. wing whack too.
Yeah, she’s a serious right winger of the Sarah Palin variety.

Heartbreaking to hear those Sandy Hook moms at their news conference today—–one saying she put 2 kids on the bus in the morning and only 1 came home—–and the other mom saying she still finds herself reaching for her little guy’s hand in parking lots. And the feelings are understandably still so raw that they cannot speak without crying. I cannot imagine….
My heart aches to hear them. I cannot even imagine. God give them peace. They are so brave to speak out right now. {{{{{Moms of Sandy Hook}}}}}
Don’t you know Congress and SC lives are so much more important than anyone else.
Why does Rev. Al have a gun nut on to spew his nonsense on the airwaves, to make his cockeyed arguments, to promote Gun Appreciation Day in all its glory? I just find this so distasteful, so unnecessary, so maddening, and they have so many other outlets to promote their gun love. And it does no good for Al to make the case about the idiocy of having his gun appreciation day on MLK weekend. He doesn’t care about that in the least, same with his fellow gun nuts. Nothing is accomplished with this kind of guest. Dumb.
What a horrible mess this guy caused with his ego and his lies:
Look at that picture of that precious little angel.
It just rips your heart apart. We can’t let this madness go on and cause unending pain for families like these who will suffer this loss forever.
The thing that really broke my heart was listening to Rachel’s interview with the Wheeler family who lost their son, Ben, and the mother said that her second son (first born) told her “you promised you’d protect us”. I can’t even imagine what that must have been like. And those words could be said to every parent/adult in this country. When Gabby Giffords was shot, President Obama called on the country to make this country worthy of the little girl who died. And that didn’t happen. It’s unbelievable that there are parents and elected officials who are pushing back against doing something to protect children from the horror of their gun obsessions, and their beloved 2nd Amendment.
