Brought over from end of prior thread…and again I’m behind!!

What a treasure you all have created during the last two days. I was traveling and barely had time to skim each post during breaks and in my hotel room. Finally a breather and a moment to thank you all for your commentary, joy, enthusiasm, tips on great pieces to catch on c-span, funny commentary and on and on. And a glorious job done by Chips!!! Photos, videos, newspaper covers, links to live streaming…Can’t begin to thank you.

watched the Church service….I was fine, except for
    1) the children’s gospel choir; can you just imagine how those children felt to be presenting, in such expressive song, to PBO, could you just feel God’s grace shining upon them?..
    2) Kansas city minister who spoke the words our hearts have been feeling about PBO for so long; yes, God has put PBO right where he needs to be (to top it off, the minister was from his grandparent’s home state) I could feel PBO’s heart beat..and
    3) to hear that most powerful and moving voice of the gentleman who sang I BELIEVE…..

.ok, now, I’ve got to stop crying these tears of joy!!!!!!!

What lucky people. The president and first lady are doing everything they can to extend this glorious moment and give all of us, especially today’s WH visitors, something we can always remember. Michelle said the other day that they wanted to savor it all this time and I think that’s what they’re doing. Sure there’s a lot of ugliness going on and yes the obstinate Repubs will get back into their combat mode, but sometimes you got to take the good stuff and make it last as long as you can.

      http://newsandinsight.thomsonreuters.com/Legal/News/2013/01_-_January/Supreme_Court_rejects_Asarco_challenge_to_EPA_rule/

Jan 22 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court refused on Tuesday to consider reducing the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to set air quality standards, leaving intact a tough new limit on sulfur dioxide emissions in a victory for the Obama administration.

Without comment, the court decided not to hear an appeal by Grupo Mexico SAB’s Asarco LLC unit of a lower court ruling that upholds a 2010 EPA rule limiting sulfur dioxide in the air to 75 parts per billion over one hour.

God Bless the Supreme Court of the United States. Can you what hearing that would have done to our precious children. Some peeps don’t want to protect our children from guns and now someone wants to take the EPA’s authority to protect our drinking water. I hope this is a step toward sanity.

And I love PBO and FLOTUS so much. I cannot imagine my world without them at the helm of our country. They are so beautiful – so giving.

      • January 22, 2013 at 8:40 pm

I am from California and I remember when we had so much smog and bad air quality while I was growing up. The state of CA along with the EPA imposed strict air quality rules with cars, manufacturers, etc., I remember we had to play inside and there were “smog alerts” so that kids and seniors stay indoors due to poor air quality. Now we have much cleaner air and hardly any smog alerts. This would never had happened if the Federal Government had not stepped in. I give credit to President Nixon who formed the EPA and our many DEM and GOP governors who did not weaken these rules. Even the most hateful GOP pundits don’t want to go back to dirty air in California.

// The White House rocked until after 3:00 AM, and celebs hit Twitter…
After they attended the two official Inaugural Balls at the Convention Center on Monday night, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed hundreds of high-profile guests–and celebrities–to the White House for an exclusive after-party that rocked the historic mansion until after 3:00 AM. Guests included Beyoncé, Katy Perry, John Mayer, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys and her husband Swizz Beatz, actress Ashley Judd, singer Eric Benet, John Legend and his fiancee, model Chrissy Teigen. //

So, the exit polls in Israel indicate that the center-left parties of Labour and Yesh Atid should get about 36 seats. That’s more than what’s expected for Likud-Beitenu, at 31 seats. So now it just depends on who can form a coalition. The problem is that most of the rest of the parties are batshit crazy. And sure, the left could bring the Arab parties into the coalition, but no Israeli govt has ever done that.

On Amtrak train, almost home to NC after Inauguration, and grateful to see TOD postings coming in, even now. Missed everything since the write up of the TOD gathering on Sunday, and I’m hungry for it all. But grateful and calming myself that it is all here, and I can come here and read and see everything over the next few days and weeks. Especially love having the front pages. So much here that I could never find otherwise. And so much here that, while it’s out there in the universe, I would miss it for so many reasons. But here it is, in TOD ‘s reading room, library, archive. Do not know how you do it but so glad you do. The commentary by the TOD community is good medicine; inspiring, comforting, informative, funny, smart, and worthy. Integrity 24/7 from one and all. I clench my teeth so often reading and hearing claptrap, malarkey, baloney and vitriol in the press and media; here, I take a deep breath, release shoulders, relax clenched teeth, and start to grin or gasp with delight. Thankful. Grateful. Lucky.

How beautiful you write…..see y’all , there are a few people in NC that have brains and hearts……now we have to work on Kay Hagen…read quotes from her in paper that did not sound promising about gun control…..called her office and left my name/.# and thoughts including 2 yrs. is not far off and I would never vote for anyone who did not support PBO gun initiatives…

Senator Hagen’s office told me a few weeks ago she would support a ban on assault weapons, I was skeptical when I was told that. I would suspect the Republicans will spend a lot of money to defeat her in 2014. She is probably running scared.

has there been a vote on the Filibuster yet

      • January 22, 2013 at 6:07 pm

My prediction (hope?)? We’re going nuclear. The GOP knows that any reform that the Dem caucus would agree to would neuter them, so they’re unlikely to cooperate. And Harry wouldn’t go this far without having the votes.

        • 79 Lovepolitics2008
          January 22, 2013 at 6:39 pm

No way the GOP will cooperate. They’re salivating at using this politically. They’ll go out screaming that democrats are dictators. Aren’t they already screaming at the “liberal” agenda of President Obama ?

It’s demonization of President Obama and democrats, version 2.0 .

I hope Senators Reid and Schumer are ready to fight the messaging battle on filibuster reform. Americans have to be educated about how republicans have abused the filibuster in recent years. Changing the rules is just common sense.

As for the demonization of President Obama, I don’t think it will have a big impact. Republicans have screamed for four years now. People are tuning out.

I had that same exact conversation just now with a patron. He was interested in seeing what the Right’s reaction would be today; and then we both came to the conclusion that people are starting to not care about the Right’s explosions.

Update on my Inaugural Luncheon. There were HIGHS & not so highs —

    1. not so high — couldn’t find golden beets, micro greens, nor the NY wines. Used substitues; however, called Korbel and found that the “Inaugural” CHampagne was actually their “Natural” specially packaged. Got the Champagne, just not the commemorative bottle.
    2. HIGH: The meal was very easy to prepare
    3. HIGH: The meal tasted FABULOUS! (Just hate that it was 3000 calories!)
    4. not so high — I ate alone! My two guests were ill and as I said “We’ll do it when everyone is better,” my Mom stayed home. As the fillets were already thawed and most of the pre-cooking was done, I went ahead with the meal. Figured it would be a good test run on timing. The only thing I didn’t cook were the pies. Wrapped those babies up and stuck them in the freezer.

Of course, while eating lunch, my Mom called. Why, oh why, did I tell her how delicious everything was? Needless to say, after I finished my meal, I had to run plates down to my Mom! Why, oh why, did I give her the menu card? As she was heating the meal for dinner, she noticed I didn’t bring the dessert. Good daughter that I am, I popped a pie in the oven; about 7:15 I start out the door and find my car covered in snow… My Mom let me off the hook for delivering dessert. :-)

Actually glad I had the opportunity to do a test run. The most difficult part was making the sweet potato hay. took forever to cut the hay. Sure there must be a tool on the market to make the task easier. Couldn’t believe my little che-che, poo-poo market didn’t have golden beets; now I’ll have time to try to find them before I do it again.

    • January 22, 2013 at 6:18 pm

Oh, how sweet your are, Alycee!!!! You are very ambitious and I hope you enjoyed it! I made the dessert and it was fabulous!

Oh, Meta, it was so delicious! While it would have been an honor to actually attend the Inaugural Luncheon, I’m sure that I enjoyed my meal as much or more. I started eating right after POTUS signed the appointments and I didn’t finish until he was viewing Dr. King’s bust. Mind you, I only ate the first two courses! I’m a slow eater and I like to savor each bite.

The music from Yo Yo Ma and Izthak Perlman, et al was pre-recorded during the first inaug as well. This was done to “preserve the musical experience for the artists and the audience because of the high wind and the cold. No big “controversy” over that at all.

Always gonna be some haters out there who will jump on anything. Beyonce is married to the man who wrote “Brush That Dirt Off Your Shoulders” — she knows how to deal and she’ll be fine.

That is not a big deal in my honest opinion. Trust me, the media would have found some other crap to focus on. First it was Sasha’s yawn. They tried but that apparently didn’t give them too much mileage and actually made them look more petty and juvenile harping on an 11-yr old, so they’ve now jumped to another issue. I think this is less about Beyonce and more of an MSM attempt to rain on the Inaugural parade because the same MSM predicted (and wanted) nothing more than doom and gloom for the event.

So now they are trying to distract from the overwhelming success of the ENTIRE inaugural event by focusing on foolish minutia.

    Tuskegee Airmen watch Obama’s swearing-in

    http://news.muckety.com/2013/01/21/tuskegee-airmen-watch-obamas-swearing-in/40261

    By Laurie Bennett
    January 21, 2013 at 6:03pm

Among the honored guests at the inauguration Monday were aged members of the Tuskegee Airmen, an African-American unit during World War II. In wheelchairs, they watched from the terrace of the Capitol as the first black president took the oath for a second term. They joined the president in the inaugural parade reviewing stand.

“I never thought I would live to see it,” Clayton Lawrence, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, told the Associated Press.

The story of the unit was told in George Lucas’s film, “Red Tails.” A replica of the red-tailed fighter plane flown by the pilots was to be part of a float in the parade.

Although they faced widespread prejudice on the homefront, a number of the airmen achieved prominence after the war.

Coleman Young served as mayor of Detroit. Percy Sutton was Manhattan borough president and an attorney to Malcolm X.

Emmett Rice was a member of the Federal Reserve Board. His daughter, Susan Rice, is U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

On Carol Costello facebook page, she is with CNN. Any way she talk about going to the grocery store after she got off of work and she spoke to several people and the people said they were not interested in the Inauguration. Then this morning she was running her mouth about the President’s speech, she was talking negative about the speech, she ask what did you think of the President’s speech? Should he have reach out to the Republicans. I am not a fan of hers, not one bit. I watch CNN because of the Inauguration, but I am going back to not watching CNN. About no one being interested in the Inauguration, how the hell can you talk to a hand full of people at a grocery store and decide that no one was interested in the Inauguration. She must didn’t see the crowd there. And Costello need to speak to someone beside Mitt Romney supporters, those hate fill Republicans. She need to get off her GOP high horse.

        Anniebella,

Indeed, there are many fools that didn’t know about the inauguration. The same fools that don’t vote in any election because either 1) they think they have it all and can’t care less about who occupies the WH, they believe they are so lucky that nothing can happen to them, like losing a job, or getting sick with no insurance; or 2) they are part of the cynical group who believes every politician of any party is bad and corrupt, therefore their votes don’t matter.

I know one just like that. We commute in the same bus and meet frequently. He asked me this morning why so much fanfare for the inauguration yesterday. “Was it always like that even for republicans?” I said yes. He then confessed that he has never watched any before, nor has he ever voted in his life. He is over 40 years, told me that he has a bachelor’s degree, and made sure I knew he was earning close to $90k a year. You would think that he would also know that he must exercise his civic obligations. Not at all. There are many fools out there, that’s all.

This panorama of the Inaug has tags, so we know who’s where. TODers who were there can tag themselves in the crowd too [hint, hint]
Use the controls at the bottom to zoom in/out, pan left/right, up/down.

Wow, Interior Sec Ken Salazar (seated two seats away from Atty Gen Eric Holder) is there wearing a blue baseball cap — not his traditional Stetson. Wonder what was up with that?

5 rows behind the Clintons, I see Reverend Al sitting between NAACP Chairman Ben Jealous and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka who is 3 seats away from Martin L. King III.

I think I see Reggie Love, sitting 3 seats away from the President’s friend Eric Whitaker, 3 rows behind First Brother-In-Law, Craig Robinson.

This is fun! It’s like a political Where’s Waldo!!

Exit polls from Israel’s election suggest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing alliance has lost ground to centre-left parties.

They predicted a narrow majority for Mr Netanyahu’s Likud-Beitenu and nationalist allies. The prime minister pledged to form a broad coalition.

The high turnout is thought to have benefited Labour and centrists,

Yesh Atid (There is a Future), a centrist party, is believed to have come second, followed by Labour.

    ///

Yesh Atid, led by journalist-turned-politician Yair Lapid, is credited with 18 or 19 seats. Analysts say this is a stunning result for a newcomer.

Mr Lapid has said he will not join Mr Netanyahu’s team unless the prime minister promises to push for peace with Palestinians.

“We have red lines. We won’t cross those red lines, even if it will force us to sit in the opposition,” Yaakov Peri, one of Yesh Atid’s leaders, told Israeli TV.

Exit polls suggest Labour will get 17 seats – up from just seven in the outgoing parliament. Labour leader Shelly Yachimovich said: “There is a high chance of a shake-up and an end to the Netanyahu government.”

      • January 22, 2013 at 8:06 pm

Let’s not get too excited yet. Bibi may try to form a coalition with a party that’s even more batshit insane on the peace process than Likud/Beitenu, and the ultra Orthodox party. But Josh at TPM made a good point that if he does try to form a narrow hard right coalition, it will be very unstable, mostly because the Orthodox parties are quite famous for bolting on a whim.

Far from sliding further to the right, though, the Israeli electorate seems to be moving leftwards. That’s a good thing.

Thank you, Chips. Usually, I am lurking but every now and then I’ll come out and post. This is one of those now and thens. Your Inauguration coverage was and is beyond fantastic . Plus, it is still coming with all of the post-Inauguration information and photos. I am sending you hugs of joy and appreciation. We attended the 2009 Inauguration but for health reasons we could not attend this one. Yesterday, we turned on all the TVs with the Inauguration blaring on each of them. We opened up to your site and kept it on, and we did not miss a thing. My husband put on something he wore at the 2009 Inauguration and when I asked him why he put on that warm cap in the house, he declared, “I’m at the Inauguation.” So, I whipped out our pins and memorabilia from 2009, and we adorned ourselves and we were both “at the Inauguation.”

I want to thank everyone here for their links and their comments. The feeling that we get here is the same as the one we felt when we attended the 2009 Inauguration. That feeling is the same one that we felt looking at pictures of people on the Mall yesterday. It is a “Love Fest.” This is why so many people love the Obamas and the Bidens. We see the good in them and the good they are trying to do for this nation and its people. When they look out, they see the good in us–America. They see the greatest that America can truly become. It really is about “We, the people.” Their intelligence, their energy, their courage, their commitment, and their faith that we as a nation can truly make America great, inspires us to work alongside them and each other to do just that. We know it is not just for us but for future generations. As President Obama said, “This is our moment…” When the Obama for Action team asked, “Our we in?’ Yes, we are in.

Again, Thanks Chips for this wonderful site and the wonderful people who support it.

Anyone know if tonight’s inaugural ball is televised or online?

  41. January 22, 2013 at 7:54 pm

I don’t know if this is true or not but I do know for a FACT that Rusty is a mofo:

Boehner told Rs he’s not sure why Michelle O rolled her eyes at him

    TheHill:

Having a smoke is no joke to Michelle Obama.

A lip-reader claims Speaker John Boehner’s question about cigarettes at the inaugural luncheon is what triggered an eye roll from the first lady.

Larry Wenig, a lip-reading expert, tells “Inside Edition” that his analysis shows the Ohio Republican asked President Obama if he had a cigarette before the Monday luncheon.

While Obama quit smoking in 2010, Boehner still lights up. Obama has called giving up the habit for good “hard.”

According to Wenig, Boehner was referring to Michelle when he quipped to the commander in chief, “Somebody won’t let you do it.”

A silent video of the exchange shows the first lady then rolling her eyes.

When asked by ITK about the lip-reader’s assertion, Boehner spokesman Michael Steel told The Hill in an email, “That is not true.”

Evening all. Just getting in for the evening and about to go back through to savor the headlines and all the goodies I missed today. But I saw the picture of the kiss and had to come and laugh. That picture will go side by side with the elevator shot at the 2009 inauguration. EVERYONE except the girls are looking elsewhere.

LMAO at that. Apparently the girls are the only ones who take watching the first couple kiss in stride. A classic for sure.

Okay I know I’ve missed much so off I go to try and catch up…still floating on air from the weekend.

Prayer service: I was so moved by all the comments this morning, I could hardly wait to watch the service. Then in the previous thread, someone said something about the Kansas City pastor. I quickly put two and two together and made a guess that the pastor you all kept praising was Adam Hamilton. I watched the service before dinner. A couple of minutes into his sermon, I asked hubby if he would come in and listen. He did! I backed it up to the beginning. Told him he would hear some of the same things we hear week after week…….”the least among us, etc.” I held my tongue as we listened except for one time. When Hamilton was talking about Moses being criticized and telling God he wanted to quit and he said to PO: “I don’t know how you are still standing.” I said, “Neither do I.”

If anyone is interested, Adam Hamilton has written some wonderful books, my favorite one being Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White (Thoughts on Religion, Morality and Politics). Another good one is Confronting the Controversies (Biblical Perspectives on Tough Issues). He did a sermon series on that book. The topics: Separation of Church and State, Evolution, Death Penalty, Euthanasia, Abortion, Homosexuality and Prayer in Schools. He only lost 5-10 members after doing this series and received hundreds of emails in appreciation!! He also wrote a wonderful study for SS classes or small groups called Enough. It’s about materialism and Americans having so much “stuff.” All our small groups and SS classes did the study and we had a sermon series on it. Fabulous!!!!!

Obviously, you can tell I am “high” about Adam Hamilton. As you saw/heard today, he is quite amazing. He leads the largest UMC in the country. We are number 13 so we are in pretty good company. :)

Thnmtngirl! Pastor, Adam Hamilton was fantastic! It’s sad that Christian leaders like him never get the same public exposure as the right wing Christian haters. With all the books he has written you would think that our media would bother to highlight his views and contrast them with that of the right wingers. I am glad you belong to a church that shares his views.

I saw some commentary about this earlier…http://www.chron.com/news/politics/article/Did-or-didn-t-she-Beyonce-questioned-on-lip-sync-4214302.php

There’s no question Beyonce’s rendition of the national anthem was a roaring success. The mystery: was it live or lip synced?

On Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Marine Band told news outlets that Beyonce had lip synced at President Barack Obama’s inauguration. Master Sgt. Kristin duBois said the band was notified at the last minute that Beyonce would use a pre-recorded voice track.

But by late afternoon, the Marine Corps backed off that statement.

Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Gregory Wolf said that because there was no opportunity for Beyonce to rehearse with the Marine Band, it was determined that a live performance by the band was ill advised. Instead they used a pre-recorded track for the band’s portion of the song.

“Regarding Ms. Knowles-Carter’s vocal performance,” Wolf’s statement continued, “no one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded.”
