Have you ever seen a President and First Lady as deeply devoted to each other as these two? Maybe there have been some, but…

I can’t think of any others like the current POTUS and FLOTUS. They truly are devoted to each other.

Nope we haven’t seen any and anyone who spreads the meme that Pres. Obama wasn’t there for his wife and abandoned her yesterday as was said in the last thread is clearly buying into media nonsense.

All the pictures and videos from the inauguration show that this is one head over heels in love and devoted couple.

They’re 100% devoted to each other and it is lovely to witness.

The love shared by the family was also obvious and commented on by many (First Family Candid Camera).

Don’t want to beat a dead horse, but have to put in my two cents. I was gone for a while and when I got back I read the ridiculous postings about the President “abandoning” Michelle. That was absolutely the most WRONG statement I have read here. I also watched EVERY minute…..what I noticed was a man who turned to his wife first for every thing, as he always does.
I watched the prayer service…..the song before the sermon to the end, and I saw her face when the minister thanked them for what they were doing…..they were both obviously moved, and I thought “it’s about time someone said that.” They were both so in sync with each other. Also, she laughed when the minister said “You could’ve been a preacher”…..When they got up to leave he had his arm around her as usual, then when they got further up the aisle, she stopped and talked with someone…..What I have always appreciated about him is his treatment of her.
I remember poor Pat Nixon…..he would walk off and leave her, ignore her, until other people would tell him to go and get her! Jack was not always gracious to Jackie, and LBJ…..well……’nuff said. This marriage is a love match that has grown and deepened these past four years, and that whole family loves each other! I don’t care what “savvy” people someone claims to talk to……that whole screed was patently false!

Yes! It is a marriage, like many, tempered by adversity and challenges, but one of the healthiest couple and family that we have seen in the White House in a long time. JFK would never have been able to function in today’s current media environment. He had multiple affairs and liaisons both in the WH and outside throughout his presidency.

You’re absolutely correct Carolyn. Chi on the “Chat Away” thread instead of beginning Pres. Obama’s second term with positivity came here to spread gossip, rumor, drivel, and lies. She has not provided one evidence about Pres. Obama supposedly throwing FLOTUS under the bus and ignoring her and treating her like crap. She’s been peddling disgusting nonsense and I for one agree with your statement. Pres. Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama walked step in step throughout the weekend and Chi is ridiculous for coming here and trying to poison the atmosphere.

          • January 23, 2013 at 5:02 pm

            Well said, Carolyn!!

I just glanced at some of the repulsive drivel posted by one individual on the prior thread. I have never seen a President more loving and attentive to his wife and that was the overwhelming impression of viewing the two of them during the entire Inauguration series of events.

I just wrote something similar when I came across that wrongheaded perception, not based in reality, of the interaction between our First Couple on Inauguration Day—-that I have never seen a husband treat his wife with so much love and affection as President Obama. Always. Their love for each other is obvious to all. It’s glaring, in fact. And I might add I don’t even like the idea that any wife is in need of a big strong husband to help her get through the day, Marriages are a partnership, not a protection racket. Women these days are more independent than that and are perfectly able to navigate on their own.

Yeah…adding my two cents…you gotta be specifically looking for discord to spout words like “abandonment.” To insinuate that is to ignore everything that they have been through together in the last 4 years…all the love and respect that they have shown for each other and that we’ve all seen during this time. To jump to that kind of unfounded conclusion is what the GOP does, not a true supporter of the President and the First Lady.

I just had to chime in on this….the cameras for the Inaugural lunch just quickly popped back on while dessert was ending—FLOTUS’ dessert plate was barely eaten (she may have been mingling like last time and barely had time to finish), but we have no idea what was really going on. FLOTUS was leaned up eating while I saw PBO and Boehner conversing behind her back—-my husband and I call this “running interference” because we do this when I need a break from my “seat mate” at a dinner or function. I will either take a bathroom break or nibble on food or read a program and that’s my husband’s cue to take over for awhile so I get my bearings. I also observed the First Lady give long and gripping hugs as she left the table to Boehner and Cantor’s wives. She was truly warm with them and they seemed to light up with her though not with their husbands (FLOTUS probably felt so sorry for them). But the tension I noticed between the Boehners was very striking. The Cantors looked a little more at ease with each other. (I was noticing all of this while the speeches and toasts were being made). Another thing came to mind…..this lunch was right before they drove and walked down amongst the crowds. They walked out of the limo only once this time. They did it twice I believe in 2009. We have no idea what Mrs. O was thinking or feeling at the time or if she was feeling tense at the lunch—I don’t know. I would but then that’s projecting my feelings on to Mrs. Obama. Maybe she will tell us one day. All I know is I saw a very loving couple that were probably happy at times, tired at times, relieved at times, tense at times, nervous at times, annoyed at times (like we all are)…….but truly in love with one another and I’m so glad I was able to witness every ounce of their affection and humanness on that great day.

They walked twice. Once in the middle then again at the end. They walked past the reviewing stand then got a ride to the White House.

This flag pin thing is so ridiculous. Barack Obama’s heart burns for his country. I would be curious to know if past presidents ALWAYS wore the pin on their suits. It’s never been an issue.

This whole thing is on the same level as the “birther issue”. We know that, don’t we ?… But at another level, it is also an illustration of the right wing authoritarian personality. Only RWAs would think of such ridiculous criticism. These people have a simplistic view of life and attach too much importance to symbols, at the expense of facts and analysis.

‘These people have a simplistic view of life and attach too much importance to symbols, at the expense of facts and analysis.’

It does seem that that is as far as their thinking goes, LP’08. What’s amazing to me is that they not only build a continuing narrative on simplistic things but the media augment and thereby push the stupidity, instead of dampening it. In my mind that makes the media complicit in keeping ignorance alive.

[Just to cheer you up from these manufactured awful hearings! I just smiled at the Oz thingy!]:

With every mundane shopping trip, the first family seems to be saying “we are a family just like you,” said Michaela Angela Davis, a fashion expert who has campaigned for more positive images of black women in the media.

As a mother and black woman, Davis said watching the Obamas has caused her to feel that “there is something happening on an emotional level that it is still to early to articulate. It feels like we matter. And when you have felt like you haven’t mattered and then you do, the whole world opens up. It’s like when you go to Oz and it goes from black and white to color.”

Last night we had a family dinner with my parents and grandparents (just 5 of us). As we were sitting down to eat we raised our glasses and made some toasts. Mine was “Cheers to the fact that the name of the president of the United States continues to be Barack Obama and NOT Mitt Romney!” My grandfather (a liberal Dem like all of us) said, “I may be a bit critical sometimes about Obama being too nice to the Republicans or trying to compromise…but I am damn proud of our president and we are so lucky to have him.”

Someone placed our classy, warm, deserving First Lady next to an obnoxious alcoholic hate mongering idiot. She has been through so much, and a lot of it because of Boehner. This was a fantastic weekend for her and would have been just about perfect except for having to sit next to him for over an hour. I can imagine (and I really can; been there with an alcoholic and/or smartmouth relative you can’t escape) that he was purposely provocative … in the eye rolling pic, she was trying to eat her lunch; in this one obviously her patience and decorum had been tested to the limit!

I don’t think she/her office knew. Trying not to be mean to the Sucky Committee, but I think it was done on purpose & Boehner was there to rile her. These idiots are that childish! Unless, of course, the Speaker is supposed to sit next to FLOTUS! But then why was Dr. Jill on the other side of POTUS? Would love to know what the etiquette is, if any, for these occations!

It actually probably didn’t matter and still doesn’t. She was probably well beyond the twitter twatter of this whole thing the moment it happened. I think this whole eye roll thing is overblown and it’s painting her as losing her cool over someone as insignificant as Boehner. She’s sitting next to the leader of the free world, why wouldn’t she be OK with the person sitting on her other side?

    this is just rich:

‘ Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he believes the primary goal of President Obama’s second term is to “annihilate the Republican Party.”

“Given what we heard yesterday about the president’s vision for his second term, it’s pretty clear to me that he knows he can’t do any of that as long as the House is controlled by Republicans,” Boehner said in a speech Tuesday to The Ripon Society. “So we’re expecting over the next 22 months to be the focus of this administration as they attempt to annihilate the Republican Party.

“And let me just tell you, I do believe that is their goal — to just shove us into the dustbin of history.” ‘

If I recall correctly, and do think my brain is way less alcohol addled than yours is, your party was willing to let this country go to hell in a handbasket rather than work with the President. But don’t worry…the President isn’t going to annihilate your party…you all are a great job of that all on your own!

Hillary’s a great fighter and a tactician, but we found in the 2008 campaign she was instinctively a scrapper but not a statesman. What she learned from PBO is statesmanship. I don’t know that she would have developed that gravitas without this experience, his example and his expectations for her and American foreign policy.

To her great credit, she was willing to learn.

I know it won’t make much difference, but I resolved to boycott Virginia for visits until McDonnell and that awful AG are out of office. Prior to that election, we had a wonderful visit to the historical places. Also, we will not visit SC any time soon, for similar reasons, and much as I have loved New Orleans, I cannot visit while Bobby Jindal is governor…….not allowing Medicaid to pay for Hospice! These people are evil.
Oh, I went to Eclectablog and looked at Anne’s wonderful pictures. Those two are so creative…..first parts of the inauguration speech interspersed with the pictures, then the wonderful poem “One Day” interspersed. It won’t be too long before that poem is in literature anthologies for college students. It is incredibly good, this from an old lit teacher. Another prof and I were talking about it today on our noon walk. It’s absolutely amazing.
I would also boycott Texas with that horrible governor, but my son’s family lives there, so we go. However, I do see hope for Texas….Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Dallas are moving along. If Fort Worth would vote correctly, they would be a blue state. I hope for purple by 2016. So does my daughter-in-law. She is as rabid as we are, and comes from very RWNJs.

You are exactly right 4morefor44. Don’t believe for a second this MSM and GOP love fest with Hillary is based on any genuine belief that she is a threat to their desired Republican candidate. It’s also a cynical attempt to get Democrats so invested in the idea of a Hillary candidacy, that they have zero motivation or enthusiasm for anyone BUT Hillary (who won’t run or will be defeated) – thereby ensuring a Republican WH in 2016.

As I’ve stated many many times before, many of the wealthy “liberals” in the MSM and blogosphere would be just fine with a Republican Presidency. They did just fine and probably even better financially during the Bush years. So if they push Hillary to help the GOP in 2016, so be it. Their arses are covered – or so they think.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior defense officials say Pentagon chief Leon Panetta is removing the military’s ban on women serving in combat, opening hundreds of thousands of front-line positions and potentially elite commando jobs after more than a decade at war.

The groundbreaking move recommended by the Joint Chiefs of Staff overturns a 1994 rule prohibiting women from being assigned to smaller ground combat units. Panetta’s decision gives the military services until January 2016 to seek special exceptions if they believe any positions must remain closed to women.

A senior military official says the services will develop plans for allowing women to seek the combat positions. Some jobs may open as soon as this year. Assessments for others, such as special operations forces, including Navy SEALS and the Army’s Delta Force, may take longer.

    Afternoon/evening Obots!

I’m not even going to try to catch up on all the threads. I see Madame Secretary slapped around the mouth breathers a bit. Good for her.

Now, filibuster reform. It seems that Turtle has just about run out of time. From TPM:

Senate Democrats have the 51 votes necessary to weaken the filibuster, the top two Democrats declared unequivocally on Wednesday.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said he’s continuing discussions with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) over a bipartisan resolution. But when asked if he has the 51 votes for filibuster reform via the constitutional option if that fails, he didn’t mince words.

    “Yes,” Reid said.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) told reporters that the Merkley-Udall “full talking filibuster” approach likely won’t happen because it “does not have 51 votes.” But he said a more modest package that Reid has put forth to McConnell, aimed at shifting the burden from a governing majority to an obstructing minority, would pass.

    Tick tock, Turtle.

The quality of the Members in the House leaves a lot to be desired. You must wonder what their constituents are like.
    Who elect these clowns ?

The House is not the august chamber it used to be. It has become an asylum of all sorts of fringe.

    God help us!

Fireside Hangouts: Vice President Biden Joins a Conversation on Reducing Gun Violence

This week, the White House will continue a series of conversations with top administration officials on Google+. On Thursday, January 24 at 1:45 p.m. ET, Vice President Biden will join the latest “Fireside Hangout” – a 21st century take on FDR’s famous radio addresses – to talk about reducing gun violence.

On January 16, President Obama and Vice President Biden released a plan to help protect our children and our communities by reducing gun violence. The plan outlines specific, common-sense steps we can take right now to help keep guns out of the wrong hands, ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, make our schools safer, and increase access to mental health services. Learn more about the plan here.

During the hangout hosted by Google and moderated by Hari Sreenivasan from PBS NewsHour, Vice President Biden will discuss the White House policy recommendations on reducing gun violence. Google+ users from the around the country will join the discussion, including Guy Kawasaki and Phil DeFranco. If you have a question, you can suggest it by writing it on the participants’ on Google+ pages. Watch the hangout with Vice President Biden live on WhiteHouse.gov, or tune in to the White House’s Google+ page or YouTube channel.

We’ll continue to host hangouts with key members of the President’s cabinet on a range of second term priorities. Follow us on Google+ for updates from the Administration and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts.

I am sure like me most of you will decide for yourselves who you will support for 2016 whether you are in OFA or not. I am in it to support PBO, not whomever someone I am not supporting tells me to support.

Listening to alot of the discussion about 2016 and who will inherit Organinzing for Action at the end of the President’s term…i will put my bid in that it will be the President himself…

i don’t know who all the players will bein 2016…but i say with some confidence that neither VP Biden or SoS Clinton will Inherit the Wind~~(OFA)

    as someone likes to say….

    That is All… smilin

what i mean is that depending how strong Orgainzing for Action becomes…there is no one that could touch this organization but PBO….and i do not see PBO turning over OFA to Biden or Clinton…

No one ‘gets’ it. It is a 501c3 organization that has been put in place and will be an activist grass roots organization headed by Jon, Robert, Stephanie, and Plouffe. They will roll out initiatives and call to action that supports PBO’s agenda. I imagine there may be some request to support local, state, and national level candidates, but I doubt anyone gets direct access to the database.

I think the new incarnation of OFA should start with a vote of “members” about our privacy and/or a petition to keep our info out of the hands of the DNC, the DCCC, Daily Kos, the emo… whatever it is you all call the PL criers! Is there anyone here who can get to the people recently put in charge to say we would strenuously object to being sold to these other groups? WE THE PEOPLE should tell these groups to back off… that’s what the new OFA is about. If we can’t pull together to get they idiots on “our side” to back off, what can we hope to do against the absolute devils in the GOP?? Just wondering. Maybe a tweet to the leaders of these groups from one of our expert tweeters is in order?

Go to the OFA contact us page and let them know your concern. There is no reason to put that out in the twitterverse. I’d appear that there was infighting among ourselves before it even gets off the ground. By all means let them know how you feel, but behind the scenes.

Watching Rev. Al on time delay. He pronounced my stupid senators name wrong and I loved it. Barrasso deserves no respect. At least WY only has three idiots in Congress. Also see Rush made a fool of himself.

Who the Fuck cares if the music was played live or if Beyoncie sang live? I know that 2009 the cold weather prevented YoYo Ma from playing life due to his very expense violin and possible damage playing in the very cold weather. There are so many people dying every day due to lack of healthcare, evil Governors cutting off hospice care, lack of jobs and the lazy GOP House and they are worried about who sang or played “live” at the inaugural….Bill Press!

AMEN!!! Who gives flying farther about 2016? as to OFA? That belongs to PBO and his supporters, not to the democratic party. They can go make their own list and build their own coalition.
