ATLANTA – “Gun violence in and around our schools is simply unconscionable and must end. Too many young people are being harmed, and too many families are suffering from unimaginable and unnecessary grief. I pray that the student who was shot today at Price Middle School in southwest Atlanta recovers quickly and can return home to family and friends. A suspect has been taken into custody. I would also like the students, faculty and families of the Price Middle School community to know that they have the full support of the City of Atlanta as they heal from today’s terrible incident. The city’s Employee Assistance Program counselors are already at the school providing guidance for students, faculty and family members.”
A Tip To Add To Our Playbook: “How To Get Through a Senate Hearing 101″ ~
I’ve totally lost it with the Repukes at the hearing, whom I’m now muting. Just listening to Dems and Hagel. Doing rhyming games with myself. What rhymes with Vitter, I ask myself? Ha!

I think that Senators should declare how they are going to vote before the hearing. If you are a ‘no’ vote, then you can only observe the proceedings. If you are a ‘yes’ vote, then you get to ask questions that embellishes on how the nominee intends on moving the President’s agenda forward. That should save quite a bit of time on folks just grandstanding and mugging for the camera.
He is going to cut into their payola. Defense contractor lobbyists and other war profiteers not going to be happy about a certain DOD Secretary Hagel. All pissed off profiteers from the military industrial complex — of which the Senate is one powerful wing of that complex.

Amazing story from Hagel about going to Nam………….but I have a question……why are so many of these R Senators so whimpy looking…just watching Sessions and shaking my head between the split screen…
kathryn – why do I think you are at the same point in watching these hearings as I am … as in: very distracted, almost ready to lose it, thinkin’ about throwing a shoe at the image of the wimps!
and sitting here wondering why am I wasting my time…ALL DAY LONG……..part of it is entertainment….Sessions is down right comical in his lack of brains…on the other hand being scared shitless that he lacks brains.
I just looked up Sessions’ bio. He’s my age, and yet has not picked up any smarts, yet. He’d probably lose at a game of Jeopardy, methinks, unless a staffer put a cheat sheet in front of him. He makes me want to GAG.
What is clear from this hearing is that the GOP wants to extract their pound of flesh from Hagel for not supporting the ignoramus known as John McCain in 08. This hearing is petty beyond belief. No wonder Joe Manchin felt compelled to apologize for the despicable behavior shown to Hagel (by the GOP).
‘What is clear from this hearing is that the GOP wants to extract their pound of flesh from Hagel’
I caught a bit of the hearing (up to the point Johnnie McC was settling in on the surge) before I left home, but it seems the tone did not change much after my departure. The thought that passed through my mind was that these were FRIENDS of Hagel, as some of them started out by saying, and yet they were disparaging in their questioning. I wondered if these were the ‘relationships’ media were frequently lamenting that PBO hadn’t cultivated. It doesn’t seem that Hagel’s cultivated (repub) friends are objective enough, professional enough, or even patriotic enough to assess him fairly.
Sessions thinks “his boy” Hagel is going to Defense to spy on the President and perhaps have the military overthrow the government, now led by President Obama. Really – his questions are amazing.

Glad they’re doing this, but nothing will get done unless they get some Repubs on board. We still need four more Dem state senators to make a difference, not to mention a new governor in 2014. .
Whether austerity has “worked” depends on its intended function. Now that the Bureau of Economic Analysis has reported a 0.1% drop in GDP during the last quarter—fueled largely by declining government spending—we can probably dispense with the myth that sharp spending cuts encourage growth or reduce the country’s public debt-to-GDP ratio
This is the story the media, if they weren’t biased, should be shouting from the rooftops: that the GOP economic theories have been firmly and irrefutably debunked, as well as exposing the GOP agenda to destroy this country – as long as it means the Presidency of Barack Obama would go down as well.
that’s the most important statement the press can make right now: ‘whether austerity worked depends on its intended function.’ americans need to see the rethugs are willing to take down the country in order to gain power. it’s hideous, and god-help-us true. that photo of lyin’ ryan is a little reminder of the lengths they were willing to go to.
Arrest made in today’s notable Tx. shooting—-Asst. D.A. shot and killed by 2 masked gunmen as he walked from his car to the courthouse. He was said to be heavily investigating the Aryan Brotherhood, no confirmation if white supremacists were the shooters. Also significant tidbit—-the prosecutor was said to be a gun enthusiast and always carried a gun on his belt—-did not matter this morning, there goes that argument.
Sounds so stupid, first of all, for that rude squirt Sen. Cruz of TX to thank Chuck Hagel for hanging in there during this “long hearing.” Probably Cruz’s ass is tired. But the Department of Defense is a 24/7/365 operation. Military personnel are on call 24 hours a day – and he will be, too. As SECDEF, his endurance and the endurance of all of the people who work for him is expected to be unlike anything this guy Cruz will ever endure.
Yes, this was the first official First Family portrait. Then they released another one in 2011. So I guess they are about to release the third one soon.
yep, she, Eric Erickson, James Carlville and spouse, and Babe Buchanan are out. Erin Burnett will be taking her place in the mornings with a RWNj co-host. My thought is if Fox’s rating are plummeting, can you imagine what CNN’s ratings are doing?
Chris Cuomo is the new morning co-host. Not a rwnj. Erin Burnett comes closer to that category. Jeff Zucker, old NBC boss, is the new man in town there, doing housekeeping. Making some good moves and some real questionable ones.
It’s an insult that she was ousted with that lot of biased – and often hateful – individuals. She was the only one challenging the nonsense. CNN has shown its true colors with this one!
She left NBC weekend in 2004 or so, for CNN job. Then they moved her out of the Morning show and replaced her and now, they are doing it to Soledad again. I would quit if I were in her shoes…especially after it was reported that they were mad that 1/3 of her audience was TOO ETHNIC? Hmm?
I think CNN is losing money so they’re trying to clean house. I hope MSNBC snatch her up because she’s one of the few competent and credible journalist currently out there.
I believe she has small children. The morning slot probably worked out well for her. At least better than a pm slot. She will do well where ever she lands. She also did a lot of specials on CNN, that I admit I find to be a little one-note.
They haven’t fired her. CNN hasn’t issued any statement on her future there. My guess is that Soledad is trying to negotiate a new contract or something.
The Senate hearing is over, thank you, Jesus. And everyone bowed their heads. Amen.
P.S. Half of this committee looked like rabid dogs, who haven’t eaten in a while. No integrity among any of those dogs – they just did it for show. Sick-e-ning.
I’ve switched over to rock ‘n’ roll, to get the stupid out of my brain. Ha! This song was banned from some radio stations back in the ’60s as being too much for our young ears:
wait….it’s over? Did I miss anything? Dang it, I so wanted to be around for the riveting play-by-play discourse. Oh well, there’s still LaHood’s replacement, and that other guy Brennan I think. Either way, I can’t wait…..let the games begin!!!!
I think I pissed this chick off on my FB page today..lol. she posted after the ATL shooting that President Obama “NEEDS” to talk more about violence in the inner cities like Chicago, Detroit and such like he “talks about Newton all the time”.
I pointed out to her that POTUS has always mentioned Chicago in his remarks, and made a point to say that no child should feel unsafe at school and that there is only so much POTUS can do outside of EOs. I told her that it’s Congress job to make laws. So she then says she’s aware of the remarks, but POTUS needs to “DO SOMETHING” more to let people know that it’s important to him.
Ok, so then I told her that POTUS could give speeches in Detroit, visit students in Chicago and sit down with people in LA, but their is only so much that he can do with words. Congress has to do their jobs.
So then she says, well then he should give speeches or something to show he cares. So then I basically told her that speeches only go so far. it’s congress that needs to do something. I also said that the reason the tea party and gun rights advocates seem to be so powerful is because even though they are small, the lobby their members of congress, they “march” they “rally” and they make calls.
then I said that people today think that just posting tweets or FB rants that get liked by their “friends” mean they are advocating for something, but the real work is outside of social media. i told her the majority of congress critters don’t even monitor or post to their pages anyway, they are mostly run by interns, and I told her that it’s still the old ways that work to lobby congress (phones, emails, faxes, sit-ins, etc).
I told her that yes social media was a part of why OfA was so successful, but that it did not take the place of person to person contact. “Boots on the ground” is what made OfA and the Obama campaign different from the rest.
i told her that when POTUS urged people to call their congresscritters, that even people in blood red states called their people, cause even if they were few and far between they wanted their person to know that they had constitutions on the other side of the aisle as well.
So she said “well how can “we” help “you” and that she would continue to post stuff to FB “if that was alright by me”…I just laughed cause then I knew that she just wanted to be a keyboard warrior and didn’t want to do any real work, so I just told her something to appease her. I’m too through with her when it comes to political advocacy.
I saw a person on FB come right out and say that PBO didn’t care about black children only white children because he hasn’t visited the parents of slain children in Chicago. It’s sad the lies that people believe and that they would believe that he doesn’t care for black children when it’s just not true.
I don’t know if the person actually lives in Chicago or not. I don’t know if she has been directly impacted by the rampant violence. If she were, I would accept her comments as those of frustration. She probably voted for PBO and loves him as we do. However, if she perceives that in seemingly disproportionate attention, great homage being paid to Newtown, rather than her own children, her dismay is understandable. I would not even begin to attempt to address someone in that situation, unless I had the same personal experience. If she hadn’t been directly involved, then her anger is just looking for a place to land. These are not normal situations and people will not process the same information in the same way. Chicago is sticky for PBO, but he will do what he can to help, the best he can.
she does not have any children and she a NOLA native who lives now in NYC.
there has always been a disappropriate amount of attention paid to white victims of crime than those of color. this is the state of our media before PBO it will continue after PBO. the problem lies with the media’s discrimination when it comes to violent crime victim and kidnapped victims. she made no mention of the media or Congress. she laid it at the feet of POTUS only. and basically said because POTUS didn’t specifically reference the cities she mentioned that POTUS didn’t care.
ETA: She’s a high school “friend” who I know fairly well. She’s cool peeps, but sometimes she really gets on her high horse about things and we get into a spirited discussion
Oh ok. I am so torn about how this whole Chicago thing has been handled. I would never put this at PBO’s feet no more than I thought he should get involved in the Chicago teacher’s strike as many did. It is sticky for him because the Mayor has close ties to him and imo has not done enough soon enough with this. For many that’s close enough for folks to think PBO should be more vocal. Of course, the minute he gets anymore involved, then he becomes a Chicago Marxist, Mobster, Roger Ailes, Jeremiah Wright protege. Either way, I do understand why it took 20 white kids to die a horrific death for attention to finally be paid to the deaths of children on Chicago’s South Side. If the Sandy Hook deaths can help stop the Chicago deaths, it doesn’t matter that they were the necessary faces of national attention to this matter.
I really like Bradley Cooper—-on Tweety, who shares my love of the movie, Silver Linings Playbook—–in which Cooper starred—–nominated for all the awards, including Oscars. He was great in that movie and seems really great in person, was going to Walter Reed and show his movie and hang out with the patients there.
Whoa….that was 8 hours of pure idiocy. Angus King was the only one who asked substantial questions. He was the only one who realized that the job of Defense Secretary is management and not making policy. He was the only one who understood that Hagel is in charge of Defense and not State.
After approximately 8 hours of questions, America and Chuck Hagel have come to the conclusion that Republicans are morons and Ted Cruz is leading the brigade.
Extremely frustrating to me that the little 5 yr. old is still holed up in that small underground bunker with the school bus driver shooter and hostage taker for the 3rd straight day. And I notice the news has managed to get Obama mentioned in this story too, as they seem to do with all news stories, no matter what. I have read about the hostage taker’s anti-govt. views and horribly violent whack job habits, but today is the first day I see Obama included in the news accounts. The local police chief in that rural Alabama area——hmmmmmm—–said the bunker man hated all govt., “from Obama on down”. Seemed extraneous and unnecessary to me, not every event has an Obama connection, people.
Hoping for a good outcome here, feel sorry for the little guy’s family—-can’t imagine it. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57566816/alabama-child-hostage-situation-in-third-day-with-shooting-suspect-boy-holed-up-in-bunker/
We know who these people are at this point. This behavior is par for the course. I just hope that child comes out unharmed. Apparently, the little child is autistic – even more traumatic when you’ve got an additional factor adding to the already horrific event. He should just let the child go.
And who would it be who stirs up these seriously insane people to act in such “anti government” fashion – it sure is NOT President Obama and the democrats

When exactly did Israel become the 51st state? When did confirming a DoD nominee become about another nation? Hagel and the senators all took oath to defend and uphold the Constitution. The last time I have read the Constitution…..NOT one mention of Israel. Yet idiots with ugly faces like Andrea Mitchell and the rest of these Dan Senor types…..are allowed to keep truly bastardizing our system of government and those who are nominated to help run this nation.
If these people want to, why don’t they ask Israel to be the 51 state and get We The People to Vote on it?
Good—NBC Nightly News just aired that segment of the Newtown dad, Dave Wheeler, speaking at the Ct. gun hearings on behalf of his son, Ben, who was one of the massacre victims. He was profound saying, “The liberty of any person to own a military-style assault weapon and a high capacity magazine and keep them in their home is SECOND (pause) to the right of my son to his life.”
Received an email update which has a behind the scenes video of Gabby and Captain Mark Kelly at the Judicial Committee Hearing yesterday. ‘ I just sat through an amazing panel on the liberal MSNBC teevee network in which the folks discussed Ted Cruz, the new senator from Texas, and you could just see the creation of the next Paul Ryan right before your eyes, primarily through the craftsmanship of Dana Milbank, whose argument is that Cruz is not really a Tea Party fanatic but, rather, a shrewd and smart operator — He Went To Harvard! — driven primarily by ambition and not batty ideology. Milbank’s argument is that this makes Cruz less malignant. Unfortunately for Milbank, our old friend Clio, Muse Of History called bullshit on this argument almost immediately. ‘

Debt limit bill passes 64-34, goes to the President for signature!
When are they voting on Hagel? He needs the committee vote first and then the general vote. Anyone know the schedule?
They may not set up the general vote until he actually clears the committee. Not sure.
Ha!
sh…..itter
Why didn’t I think of that?
(Ha!)
you are more of a lady than I am
I’m sure you’re more of a lady than I am, because my joke was meant to imply that I was goin’ there, too, and draggin’ you with me!
You are a wonderful leader, Jackie O
You are, too!
Critter. Shitter.
Bitter.
Spitter.
That pretty much sums him up…..Vitter is a bitter critter who acts like a sh*itter.
and, if we’re lucky, quitter
Perfect!
Bitter, chitter, fitter, flitter, fritter, “gitter”, glitter, hitter, jitter, knitter, litter, pitter, quitter, twitter,
When do they actually vote on Hagel?
they are not going to vote….if they vote they have to shut up
Good point. 50 Shades of STFU would be my cry.
good one!
LOL!
Called Levin’s office, Committee vote is tomorrow, full senate vote is next week. Will schedule w/ Reid for exact date.
Thanks, LP! I was afraid we’d have to listen to them ad infinitum! Also. To. Ad nauseam.
I have a headache!
I’m kinda likin Angus King…..seems to have more sense than anyone there besides Hagel
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s coming up – she should be good, too.
more loves:
I love Bo.
I love Champ.
I love Beyonce.
I love the 47% because they were underestimated.
I love Valerie Jarrett.
I love Nancy Pelosi.
That’s so odd… I love them too!
Cookemon, that’s a downright brilliant idea. If you’ve already declared that your mind is closed, then shut up. What a joy that would be.
What the hell does the Dept of Defense do?…….He is not applying for Sec. of State or President
He is going to cut into their payola. Defense contractor lobbyists and other war profiteers not going to be happy about a certain DOD Secretary Hagel. All pissed off profiteers from the military industrial complex — of which the Senate is one powerful wing of that complex.
Knock. Me. Out. with this photo, why doncha?! Ai yai yai…..
That there is one fine President, ain’t he?
Calls for a cup of green jasmine tea. Please.
per Sam Stein: Joe Manchin apologized to Hagel for the shitty hearing and disrespect.
I’m paraphrasing.
Yes, it was nicely done.
Pretty close paraphrasing – I replayed it and Manchin said: “I feel like I want to apologize for some of the tone and demeanor today.”
‘i feel like i want to apologize, but no effing way i’d ever actually do that.’
Perfect.
Why is Manchin caucusing with democrats, if he votes with Republicans more than half the time?
Sessions says to Hagel, “You’re holdin up, well.” No kidding, Sessions, ya got a lightweight questioning a heavyweight. Sheeesh.
Ha ha ha ha ha.
I’m glad I waited around to hear THAT!
BTW, not to speak for you with my thoughts!
you pretty much nailed it
I just looked up Sessions’ bio. He’s my age, and yet has not picked up any smarts, yet. He’d probably lose at a game of Jeopardy, methinks, unless a staffer put a cheat sheet in front of him. He makes me want to GAG.
The President decides when military force is need, not the Sec. of Defense………
Bingo!
I don’t like Joe Manchin at all, but today he’s one of the more sane and respectful ones there, so I’ll give him that.
He was the only Dem NO vote on the debt ceiling today.
Which is one of the reasons I don’t like him at all! Arghhh.
Only Angus King so far understands that the Defense Secretary is in charge of management and doesn’t set policy (that’s Pres. Obama’s job).
Again, I say…I’m kinda likin Angus King
Sessions thinks “his boy” Hagel is going to Defense to spy on the President and perhaps have the military overthrow the government, now led by President Obama. Really – his questions are amazing.
The Pennsylvania House Democratic Policy Committee heard testimony from a half-dozen voters and community groups, including the NAACP and the League of Women Voters. All who testified gave accounts of confusion at the polls about voter ID and the identification requirements for first-time voters.
Glad they’re doing this, but nothing will get done unless they get some Repubs on board. We still need four more Dem state senators to make a difference, not to mention a new governor in 2014. .
I know….not sure what to do
I get the feeling that…..as I look at a crystal blue sky with not a cloud to be found, these Ah’s would argue that it was snowing…
Well, yes, especially if they read it in the Washington Post or Drudge Report or heard it on FOX. Yes, they would.
You’re probably right – they have lost their grip on reality.
Also the fact that there was all the tension and uncertainty about the debt ceiling, etc.
You know, you have to give David Beckham props. He just signed a five month contract to play for Paris SG, and is donating his salary to charity.
Nice.
Dont know much about Colorado Lt. Gov. Garcia, but he is Hispanic and expected to be name Labor Secretary http://t.co/5kSFUG2X

It is possible for Ted Cruz to get stupider as the day gets longer. whoknew
Take me now, Lord. (Kidding, Lord.)
How about Calgone……that detergent (I think) has no power.
Important to specify you’re just kidding – good call!
I’m not takin’ any chances with the omens! I’m Irish.
The Sec Def is a Civilian in charge of the Pentagon, manages the money appropriated by Congress and is 6th in line succession for the Presidency.
Woot! We might be seeing some cool new photos from Vogue — Annie Leibovitz and her team were in the Heezy today!!!
Oh, until now, I had not noticed that your Avitar was Uhuru? You are really a Ms. Trekkie?
SQUEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is that why Annie Liebovitz was at the white house? SQUEEEEEE!
Ok, show of hands. How many have each of the Obama family portraits in frames, featured prominently among your family photo array?
I only have one – I received it in the mail. Since they were kind enough to send it to me – I framed it!
I did too!
I have the one in my tweet. Not framed — it’s on the fridge door, so I smile at them everyday!.
This is a photo when the girls were younger. Maybe 2009?
2010….I think
Yep 2010
Yes, this was the first official First Family portrait. Then they released another one in 2011. So I guess they are about to release the third one soon.
Can’t wait to see the new Family portrait.
vogue or vanity fair?
Article says Vogue.
Did anyone hear/see any reports that CNN fired Soledad O’Brien? If so ,why? She was definitely one of the few journalist left at CNN.
And that would be why.
yep, she, Eric Erickson, James Carlville and spouse, and Babe Buchanan are out.
You are correct about Chris. I did a role reversal, Erin is the RWNJ.
detest that smart A Erin Burnett
I don’t like her either.
It’s an insult that she was ousted with that lot of biased – and often hateful – individuals. She was the only one challenging the nonsense. CNN has shown its true colors with this one!
There is no official word from the network on Soledad.
I read that CNN is replacing Soledad’s morning show with Erin Burnett.
Not right wing enough, is my guess
I hope MSNBC snaps her up.
I sent her an e-mail after they announced the changes last week…..
I would watch Soledad, or at least DVR her.
Thanks for the info from everyone.
Not fired, have not decided weather she will take 7:00PM slot Burnett was in, Jeff Zucker new CNN prez was her old boss at NBC 10 years ago. http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2013/01/cnn-to-launch-new-morning-show-155526.html#.UQgLshD_lQM.twitter
I believe she has small children. The morning slot probably worked out well for her. At least better than a pm slot. She will do well where ever she lands. She also did a lot of specials on CNN, that I admit I find to be a little one-note.
She has 2 girls; ages 11 and 10 and two boys, Twins. 7 yrs old.
In 2013….they will be 12, 11, and 8.
CNN will hear from me about getting rid of Soledad.
She is still at CNN…..it has not been reported that she left or has been fired. If they did…..then, shame on CNN.
Nena20409, I will ask the question about Soledad.
Perfectly stated.. very glad its over, pathetic bs.
Cruz is a clown of epic proportions.
I’ve switched over to rock ‘n’ roll, to get the stupid out of my brain. Ha! This song was banned from some radio stations back in the ’60s as being too much for our young ears:
Oh goodie. Some musical history. I can dig it.
Good. Dig up more, if you want, ’cause you’ve got the talent for finding the gold ~ I just got lucky and remembered this one!
I’ll take it under advisement.
Be my guest. (Ha!)
P.S. Puhleese. Anything to take our minds off that awful Senate hearing!
Gotcha. I’m looking as we speak.
I have no idea how it will be received by the MSM. Tweety is talking about movies with an actor.
Tweety thinks he’s in a novel or a film as a character actor, instead of hired to do political punditry or – perish the thought – analysis.
wait….it’s over?
If your conversation happened on FB, then your message may have reached other willing ears that needed to hear it. Good job!
Cruz is hanging out of the elephant’s butt with McCain. A real twofer, yes?
And now we’ll see how the filibuster deal holds up.
Remember VAWA was passed in 2012 with over 60 votes and sent to the House. Boehner never put out on the floor for a vote.
They secured 60 co-sponsors today, thats why he is moving forward. Wont be filibustered. http://www.rollcall.com/news/leahy_says_vawa_has_support_from_60_senators-222064-1.html?pos=hln
An afternoon / evening music break.
Ted Cruz is a disgrace, he show Hagel no respect.
Nice…..
For those of us who want to find a way to participate, this organization would be a great start to help get the word out and also help support what we want to do to also help POB on this very important issue.
http://action.americansforresponsiblesolutions.org/testimony-video.
Thank you all. HZ
Chips had a link on the Rise and Shine post…..or was it the Post before that. Yes. The Pictorial Post dedicated to honor Gabby Gifford.
charles pierce on cruz control:
