Chat Away

The President has a water gun fight with his daughter Sasha on her birthday weekend at Camp David, June 11, 2011 (Photo by Pete Souza)

(I prefer this one)

Lots of people nervously asking, after seeing that pic of President Obama (see post below), has he ever harmed a living creature? Sadly, yes:

It’s a whopping 26 here, this morning, but it’s been below zero a couple times this week. I’m just jumping the gun on Spring!

I saw an excellent comment somewhere, I’m feelin’ this person’s pain, and it was obviously from someone who’s close to the edge in a cold climate:

“I’m one snowflake away from insanity.”

          Ha! I’m not THAT bad.

Look it’s my right to own my “water guns” and no one is going to take that right away. I told you once the President started with one gun ( assault weapons) he wouldn’t be satisfied till he take all our guns away, water guns, BB guns.

Excerpts of Why We Like The President – Charles Pierce

“The president is more popular than he’s been for a long time. The president is more popular than a lot of presidents ever have been. You can attribute it to a lingering bounce from his re-election. You can attribute it to a newer bounce from his vigorous defense of himself and his ideas in his inaugural address. It is probably both of those things. But I think the primary reason that the president’s numbers are heading into puppies-and-fluffy-bunnies territory lies in his ongoing campaign — by means both explicit and implicit — to delegitimize the Republican party as a credible opposition party. ”

    ——————
“The election of Barack Hussein Obama threw the Republicans — and the raging conservative Id that is the only intellectual energy the Republicans have — completely over the edge. It wasn’t just the mainstreaming of the birther crap. It wasn’t just the rise of the Tea Party, a modern New Media marriage of old-fashioned nativism and crackpot populism straight out of Father Coughlin. (Nothing is new. Honest.) It was that the Republican party establishment was overwhelmed by the abandoned wrath aimed at a very centrist Democratic president and the wrath burned out the party’s impulse control.”

    ——————-
And the president, seeing this, shrewdly found a way to lock the Republicans inside their own monkeyhouse while he went about trying to govern the country. You can see it now as Republicans try to gut each other, and screech wildly, and pass laws in the states guaranteeing their further marginalization nationally, while the president gets credit for doggedly going about the business of doing his job. The more dogged he was, the more hysterical they became. Pretty soon, they looked less like an opposition party than they did a pack of vandals. Right now, there literally is nothing proceeding from the Republican party in Congress to which any serious person should pay any mind.

Enjoyed that post GB, but I enjoy most of Grumpy Pierce’s work! Still don’t get, though, why he doubts PBO is a true liberal at heart – has he been asleep for the last four years?

      • February 2, 2013 at 1:35 pm

There are liberals who will never be convinced that POTUS is a liberal at heart.

        • February 2, 2013 at 1:38 pm

True, and they’re usually the self-declared progressives who are, at heart, as liberal as Hannity.

        • 44 4morefor44
          February 2, 2013 at 1:49 pm

yes, even though he’s done more to advance liberalism, in its totality, than anyone in their lifetimes. by far. there’s this contingent of people who call themselves liberals who criticize or minimize literally every single thing president obama, despite the fact that he’s advanced liberalism more than anyone. he cannot do anything correctly in their eyes. not one thing. and about 99% of these people are white. we can all draw our own conclusions.

        • February 2, 2013 at 2:39 pm

These are many of the same liberals who are launching SuperPACs for Hillary Clinton – who is to the right of President Obama. Just like with the skeet shooting picture, they demand evidence of every promise and statement the President ever makes, then they resent him when he proves that he speaks the truth, means what he says, and fulfills his promises to the best of his abilities. Says a lot about them.

    • 48 Nena20409
      February 2, 2013 at 1:45 pm

The equivocation is the continued conundrum many face with pres Obama. They want him to be as they imagined, not as he is.

So they come not to Praise him, no no no, but for Him to keep making them still feel relevant. So not quite the other, but Not and at times, never one of them….be it Lincoln, FDR, JFK, LBJ, WJC, etc.

This ism isn’t just a rightie thing…..many on the professional far Left have this syndrome.

      • 49 theo67
        February 2, 2013 at 2:43 pm

I hold the Professional Left even more responsible, because after generations of demanding Democratic goals, they didn’t appreciate them when they got them. Health care. Responsible government (i.e. letting Congress destroy DADT instead of a temporary “feel good” fix by presidential decree), energy investments, etc. Makes one wonder if they ever believed in those Democratic principles in the first place…

          February 2, 2013 at 5:45 pm

They are never satisfied. FDR, Truman, LBJ, Carter and Clinton were all mercilessly attacked while in office.

Agree. And yet he wins and moves forward and takes folks like us with him on the journey.

      • 52 jackiegrumbacher
        February 2, 2013 at 5:13 pm

Any Democratic president is “extremely Liberal” to Republicans and not liberal enough to Liberals. Every one of these presidents had their detractors on the left–every single one of them. It’s only the rosy gloss people put over history that allows them to think these presidents were more liberal than PBO. FDR wouldn’t confront civil rights, which really annoyed Eleanor and a whole lot of liberals. LBJ incited leftist fury and pure disgust over Vietnam, JFK’s whole legacy got wrapped in nostalgia, but he wasn’t as liberal as his brother, Bobby. And by no stretch of anyone’s imagination was William Jefferson Clinton a precedent-setting Liberal president. So, a lot of this is just liberals acting like liberals, i.e. blind to history and reality. President Obama is a pragmatic Liberal. He will do what is right and possible and he will slowly steer the ship of state in the right (liberal) direction without risking a wreck.

We continue to pray that POB will get the people he wants to head all of the departments for our safety and people around the world to live a better and safer life. We can light candles during our prayers and meditation for his nominations to be approve.

Let us do that this coming week and days. Richard Cordray, and all coming nominations. These are things we can speak power to our words as we choose to meditate, pray, sing, or even shout them out. I believe words have power as they are spoken and the manner in which they are spoken. Just my thoughts. HZ

BAck to the previous thread subject for just a minute, since I have been cleaning all morning, and just looked in. That picture at first is a little startling, but then, he deserves to do whatever he wants in his spare time. 4more expressed my feelings on this matter. When he ran, he knew what he was doing, that he was going to get “slings and arrows” he didn’t deserve just because of his mixed race. I think that is one unspoken reason that Michelle was so hesitant to take on this journey. He knows that he is paving the way for future presidents. The first one always has the hardest job. He has done this with grace and confidence, not losing his love for his country and the people.
Look at the polls now….the more he stands up for what he is and likes, the higher the polls. He has reached a place of confidence that is showing in his ease. I have noticed a big difference since the election. Let’s remember he IS the president for four more years. We are not still in the campaign, Rmoney is no longer a threat. We have him, lucky us.
After I looked at this picture I was reminded of a picture I have of my dad holding a shotgun after hunting….quails and pheasant. It is not a frightening picture, and it was not his life, but he did enjoy the sport…..although sometimes he bagged our Thanksgiving dinner, back in the day. When I was in junior high we lived in San Francisco. One weekend we visited some friends up in the Sierra mountains. That was the only time I ever held a shotgun. The owners of the property set up tin cans for target practice, and my father wanted me to learn. So, for once and only once in my life I held a shotgun. I certainly did not get the hang of it, and told my dad this was not for me. But, actually, looking back now, that may have been a good thing because I tried it, didn’t like it at all, and have had no attraction for it. My husband never did hunt, and so neither did my son. However, both were in the service and learned respect for these weapons and learned how to handle them. They both are amazed that people can now buy openly what was kept locked up in the service.
People will overreact today, then it will die down like so much else has. Is anyone still talking about Michelle’s bangs? No. Saturday is a good day to release this. He is just good at whatever he does, so of course he is good at this too and that will drive certain parties crazy.

I think anyone who is shocked or dismayed by the skeet shooting photo doesn’t “get” our President. He’s a sportsman and would try any sport presented. He saw the skeet shooting range at Camp David and tried it. BFD. He tried bowling and sucked at it. He tried badminton with one of his Brit counterparts. Is he going to become some big gun nut? Of course not, but I’m constantly amazed at the standards (their own) people try to hold him to. Let Barack be Barack. Love him for who he is, not for who we want him to be. Just had to come out of the shadows to say…

    • 89 theo67
      February 2, 2013 at 2:54 pm

Well said, Lana. He gets to do whatever he wants to do. He’s a grown man, and he’s a responsible one. He’s said over and over that he believes in the Second Amendment, and the fact that many people do want to hunt, do sports activities, etc. and that he also believes in the responsibility that must come with such a right. There are many gun enthusiasts who have said they believe in a lot of the principles of reform that the President and Vice President have laid out. I think this photo will go a long way to convincing a lot of those relatively reasonable people that the President really does understand their point of view, and is not trying to ban all guns (although, that would be the surest way of ensuring no more gun violence…).

“Let Barack be Barack” – indeed.

A little more on the skeet-shooting thing from Obama Foodarama

    http://obamafoodorama.blogspot.com/2013/02/white-house-releases-photo-of-president.html

“…Critics pounced after President Obama said in an interview with The New Republic on Jan. 27 that “up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time.” There were many demands for an official photo.

In the midst of his re-election campaign, President Obama traveled to Camp David on Saturday, August 4, 2012, and spent the night at the woodsy compound on Catoctin mountain with family, aides and friends, including assistant chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass. Which naturally raises the question–is Kass a skeet shooter, too? The President in his interview said that his guests also hit the pigeon range, when asked if the sport shooting includes “the whole family.”

“Not the girls, but oftentimes guests of mine go up there,” President Obama responded. “And I have a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that trace back in this country for generations. And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake.”

Like President Obama, Kass is also a lefty. They play golf, football and basketball together, so skeet shooting is not out of the question. Maybe Kass’ birthday dinner for the President was a nice stew of clay pigeons.”

  34. February 2, 2013 at 2:30 pm

That’s a much nicer pic for me. Not that I have anything against skeet shooting (clay pigeons) or even hunters (though I could never, ever be one) but still …. I’d rather see my president with a water toy gun than a rifle.

  39. February 2, 2013 at 2:59 pm

This morning I was reading a book called, ” What Great Teachers Do Differently” (very good, by the way). This paragraph jumped out at me:
“think about the parents we work with. Some parents consistently look to the future and wonder what we can do differently so that their child will be more successful. Other parents consistently focus on the past and talk about last year’s teacher, or an experience the child’s older sibling went through in another setting. Some parents even harp on what happened when they themselves were in school!! Which parents would you rather work with?”

Made me think of President Obama. I think this explains a lot of his growing popularity. Focus on the future, focus on solving problems. Republicans are focused on the past and on punishment. PBO is focused on the future and prevention. Slowly people get tired of the past/punishment model and want to be uplifted and looking toward the future with a plan.

Amazing image. Love the photos showing him deep in thought. He actually has a brain within which to be deep in thought, unlike his haters.

Mia Farrow’s on MSNBC via phone on the refugee crisis in Syria and beyond. Still an activist, and good for her.

Perhaps some of these Republicans are beginning to realize what could happen if the positions were reversed, and a Repub was in the White House and the Demos did to him/her what they have been doing…..they didn’t think about that the first four years, but perhaps that’s beginning to hit home now. What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, as my mother used to say. And, I don’t doubt that if it is reversed, the Demos will use some of these same tactics. No more mr. nice guys…
Also, the president’s popularity is growing, and obstructing him now would push back on them negatively…..obstructing him when his popularity wasn’t quite as high didn’t work, so now…….watch out! They are ultimately, political creatures.
One thing I’ve noticed is that Orangeman hasn’t been nearly as prominent on the TV as he was previously…..his statements just don’t garner as much publicity as they used to.

I like both pictures. They’re both fantastic. It’s skeet shooting for crying out loud; he’s not holding an AR-15 and blasting someone’s head off. He likes to skeet shoot (it’s not for everyone)…..oh well. According to Bobfr, Pres. Obama’s skeet shooting form is fantastic and that’s a-okay by me.

I looked at the picture and laughed because it was a clear F U to the rightwing nut jobs and the media trying to give credibility to “skeet truthers.” It also simultaneously gives him more legitimacy on the issue of guns as he advocates for gun safety and pricks the NRA”s BS balloon.

Well, you may not be able to afford his dresses, but you can get his makeup:)

X Lancome: Fresh off his repeat performance as inaugural ball gown designer in chief, Jason Wu has struck a deal with the Lancome cosmetics brand to collaborate on a line of makeup. Friday morning’s announcement by Lancome Paris provided little information about the limited-edition Jason Wu for Lancome collection — except that it is slated to hit stores in September 2013
