Sad anniversary, February 3rd is “The Day The Music Died”. It is the anniversary of the day that a small plane crashed in Clear Lake Iowa in 1959 and killed three American rock and roll legends: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP “The Big Bopper” Richardson. This pretty much rendered the small town into a Mayberryesque time capsule, nothing really changing, by design. Like in the movies when a child dies, and the mother can’t cope so she leaves the bedroom exactly as it was, even 30 years later. It’s a little creepy and reeks of desperation. My mother told me that the soda fountain in the Pharmacy was EXACTLY IDENTICAL to the way it was in the 50s when she’d go there to have a malt. See, I’m from Mason City, (formerly known as River City) the next town over. So I spent a lot of time in Clear Lake (even lived on a farm there for about 3 years as a wee lad). To a lesser degree, Mason City suffers a bit from being overly nostalgic because of the musical “The Music Man”. The “Trouble in River City” is that they refuse to let that go too. So they made a musical about our little town a long time ago. Who cares? If you watch it, it just makes fun of how stupid the residents were, which only leads me to believe that whoever wrote the thing, REALLY WAS there at some point! He really knew what he was talking about! He got the puritanical, uptightedness spot on! I think that most of the younger crowd just try to forget about it, rebelling against all of the “old timeyness” of the two towns. And then the City Council keeps wondering why everyone moves far away as soon as they get the chance?

Boy, I guess I just had to write what I felt about that. Pardon my cathartic ramblings! :)

“Seventy-six trombones led the big parade
With a hundred and ten cornets close at hand.
They were followed by rows and rows of the finest virtuosos, the cream of ev’ry famous band….”
Sorry, watch the big game and enjoy.

Hey—–I’m from Mason City too—-and I was there at the Surf that night—-the last night before the music died. We all left high school the next day during lunch to drive out to see the sad plane wreckage. I even knew people who were involved with the bad decision to fly that night. And I spent all my summers on and around Clear Lake. I loved growing up there, as does everyone I know who grew up there with me. I had a huge bunch of great, fun friends—-still in touch with many of them. We had so many advantages——like Hi Dive—-the dance/gathering place for teenagers every Fri. and Sat. night. I was also there at the world premiere of the Music Man. Meredith Wilson, who wrote the play, was from Mason City. It is true that many young people scatter post college, but that is true of most home towns. Most of my friends headed to Chicago, like me, or Minneapolis, for job opportunities. But there is a core group that is still there, but all of us agree at every reunion, and I’ve been to all but one, that we were very fortunate to grow up there.

The annual Winter Dance Party has been going on at the Surf this weekend. Old and young come to celebrate the music of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, Richie Valens and many of the other old time great rock n rollers. The Surf is the coolest—–never missed a teen aged dance there—–all the big names stopped there on their cross country tours. My mom and dad went to all the dances there too, danced to the big band sounds. I remember even dancing with my dad there on one occasion—–under the floating clouds ceiling. “How I wish I could dance with my father again.”

I used to get an early radio show that celebrated it every year. Don’t get those in WY anymore. I have to get it online now. We can still enjoy their music. :(

    Good afternoon, Obots!

So, this is why I live in Los Angeles. I was on the couch, Spanish football on the telly, 74 degrees outside, all doors and windows open, ceiling fan on, and looking outside at the brilliant sunshine. Waiting for guests to arrive, beer is on ice, one margarita is in me already, and life is good.

You know, LL, painting a picture like that for people who are shivering under overcast skies while listening to the cold winds blowing outside should be considered cruel and unacceptable punishment! Where’s that empathy that Dems always profess to have?

  14. February 3, 2013 at 4:26 pm

Funny! I’ve ALWAYS called it the “Super Bowel”… Those red velvet cupcakes do sound good… Going to some friends’ house, with a TV bigger than Jupiter. You can actually look right up the players’ nostrils and see what’s in there…

Maybe i’m too sensitive but I felt like Scott Pelley was taking shots at POTUS.
The economy shrank?!?!? Only by one measure, Mr. Pelley. Soaring by all the other metrics.

    • 58 Bill
      February 3, 2013 at 5:03 pm

With the GDP being such a headline figure Pelley could probably have been criticized if he had not asked the question. However, it gave PBO the opportunity to mention the other metrics you correctly identified.

    • 59 theo67
      February 3, 2013 at 5:18 pm

I think it was ok. The economy DID shrink, that’s a fact. But, the President was able to put that fact in context, and provide a little more info than we get from the media. I thought the interview was good – and respectful, allowing the President to provide complete answers without interruption. No silly nonsense like the Fox “News” crap, or the “do your underage daughters have posters of grown men on their walls” garbage.

Wide ranging interview: Economy, Taxes, Sequester, Women in Combat, Safety of Football, Allowing Gay People in the Scouts.

I chuckled when Pres. Obama specifically mentioned closure of the carried interest loophole. Romney is screaming in his car elevator right now.

Well, I guess I missed the interview huh? I was in the kitchen cooking my beer chicken and fixins. I was expecting to call me in when the interview started. What do I find as I peek around the door? Cookeman, mouth wide open, snoring on the recliner. I’m like, ‘cookeman, cookeman, is he on yet, is he, is he!?!’ He goes, ‘huh…er….uh….um…who….oh….well….’ Sigh, maybe I’ll catch the video.

And of course —AP: Breaking news! Obama says scouting should be open to gays! President Obama is correct, of course, equal opportunities for all, but AP plucked what they considered to be the most controversial and blasted a Breaking News! bulletin on that. That’s all our news media is any more—–just controversy provokers.

You know the media is so dam stupid. Why is that Breaking News? Here’s something for you AP: Believe it or not , not every gay man is after little boy, just like every Catholic Priests are not after little boys.

Knoller is so bitter – it must be terrible to be him. Especially now that President Obama has been re-elected, re-inaugurated and reinvigorated by the American people. Nothing Knoller has done could prevent it from happening, and he’s got to live with that fact for the next four years! Lovely!!
