@samir: “Best. Typo. Ever.”
Congrats carolmaewy on #1!
Wonder who will win?
Congrats, Carol. Can’t wait to see Pres Obama!
That’s not far away, right?
Missed her again! Rats!!
Sad anniversary, February 3rd is “The Day The Music Died”. It is the anniversary of the day that a small plane crashed in Clear Lake Iowa in 1959 and killed three American rock and roll legends: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP “The Big Bopper” Richardson. This pretty much rendered the small town into a Mayberryesque time capsule, nothing really changing, by design. Like in the movies when a child dies, and the mother can’t cope so she leaves the bedroom exactly as it was, even 30 years later. It’s a little creepy and reeks of desperation. My mother told me that the soda fountain in the Pharmacy was EXACTLY IDENTICAL to the way it was in the 50s when she’d go there to have a malt. See, I’m from Mason City, (formerly known as River City) the next town over. So I spent a lot of time in Clear Lake (even lived on a farm there for about 3 years as a wee lad). To a lesser degree, Mason City suffers a bit from being overly nostalgic because of the musical “The Music Man”. The “Trouble in River City” is that they refuse to let that go too. So they made a musical about our little town a long time ago. Who cares? If you watch it, it just makes fun of how stupid the residents were, which only leads me to believe that whoever wrote the thing, REALLY WAS there at some point! He really knew what he was talking about! He got the puritanical, uptightedness spot on! I think that most of the younger crowd just try to forget about it, rebelling against all of the “old timeyness” of the two towns. And then the City Council keeps wondering why everyone moves far away as soon as they get the chance?
Boy, I guess I just had to write what I felt about that. Pardon my cathartic ramblings! :)
“Seventy-six trombones led the big parade
With a hundred and ten cornets close at hand.
They were followed by rows and rows of the finest virtuosos, the cream of ev’ry famous band….”
Sorry, watch the big game and enjoy.
Hey—–I’m from Mason City too—-and I was there at the Surf that night—-the last night before the music died. We all left high school the next day during lunch to drive out to see the sad plane wreckage. I even knew people who were involved with the bad decision to fly that night. And I spent all my summers on and around Clear Lake. I loved growing up there, as does everyone I know who grew up there with me. I had a huge bunch of great, fun friends—-still in touch with many of them. We had so many advantages——like Hi Dive—-the dance/gathering place for teenagers every Fri. and Sat. night. I was also there at the world premiere of the Music Man. Meredith Wilson, who wrote the play, was from Mason City. It is true that many young people scatter post college, but that is true of most home towns. Most of my friends headed to Chicago, like me, or Minneapolis, for job opportunities. But there is a core group that is still there, but all of us agree at every reunion, and I’ve been to all but one, that we were very fortunate to grow up there.
The annual Winter Dance Party has been going on at the Surf this weekend. Old and young come to celebrate the music of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, Richie Valens and many of the other old time great rock n rollers. The Surf is the coolest—–never missed a teen aged dance there—–all the big names stopped there on their cross country tours. My mom and dad went to all the dances there too, danced to the big band sounds. I remember even dancing with my dad there on one occasion—–under the floating clouds ceiling. “How I wish I could dance with my father again.”
I wish I could dance with my Dad too. In my dreams I guess.
I used to get an early radio show that celebrated it every year. Don’t get those in WY anymore. I have to get it online now. We can still enjoy their music. :(
@Samir, maybe that ‘Super Bowel Sunday’ was not a typo, seeing as how Dougie’s is a food place and all.
San Francisco 49'ers have an unbelievably loyal fan base. You go to the produce section at D grocery store this awaits! http://t.co/26nSN6qC— The lovely Plains (@DaRiverZkind) February 03, 2013

Damn. And red velvet cupcakes too. YUM.
Oh my..what a Super Bowl feast! YUM. :)
Good afternoon, Obots!
So, this is why I live in Los Angeles. I was on the couch, Spanish football on the telly, 74 degrees outside, all doors and windows open, ceiling fan on, and looking outside at the brilliant sunshine. Waiting for guests to arrive, beer is on ice, one margarita is in me already, and life is good.
You know, LL, painting a picture like that for people who are shivering under overcast skies while listening to the cold winds blowing outside should be considered cruel and unacceptable punishment! Where’s that empathy that Dems always profess to have?
Oh, spring is just around the corner for you guys. Courage!
Depends on which groundhog you believe. Save me some of the best eats! I’ll ask Theo67 to pick up and deliver as she likes to travel.
I thought you were from Washington? I can’t keep anything straight. Well, it’s not bad sitting in front of a fire with the loves of my life surrounding me here.
Pres. Obama’s interview with Scott Pelley is on CBS at 4:30PM ET / 3:30 PM CT. In about 9 minutes.
Hey UT, I’m at work. Are there any live links?
Last Sunday we were preparing for POTUS’s Inauguration Monday.
I think it was two Sundays ago :)
And, at least as of now, the forecast for our trip to Paso Robles over President’s Day weekend looks like it’ll be in the 70s. God, I love California.
I’m with you there! Had air conditioning on yesterday in the car, sat at an outdoor patio for lunch yesterday, and have had all doors and windows open today. Nice.
Funny! I’ve ALWAYS called it the “Super Bowel”… Those red velvet cupcakes do sound good… Going to some friends’ house, with a TV bigger than Jupiter. You can actually look right up the players’ nostrils and see what’s in there…
Up their nostrils? Can you see what they do to each other when they are in a pile trying to regain a fumble? Heard wild stories. I wish they were all miked. Loved the lip-sink video someone posted!
Off topic: Just heard on C-SPAN that Santa Fe, New Mexico has a population of 80,000 and 17 independent book stores. It must be a nice town.
i used to live in new mexico, and santa fe is indeed a very nice town!
PBO is up after the break :)
Is it streaming online at any site?
President Obama is on NOW!!!
Obama’s in the CBS houuuuuse!
He’s on now!
Hi HF, are there any links for the interview?
Not any that I’m aware of. I checked the CBS website but they don’t start streaming until 6PM ET. :( Hopefully we will have some video footage soon.
Thanks, I tried that too. So you say they will be live streaming the game? Does that mean I get to watch Bey live? I hope so!!
He’s looking good!!!
He was looking really good. ;)
Cayman Island accounts! To whom was that a reference?
hhhhhhmmmmmmmmmm….. must be Mitt!
Good Substantive questions…without angst…WHPresscorp should take note
Short and sweet, President Obama smart, sensible and impressive again, as is his habit.
Good interview w/ President Obama. Question: Is that a toupee on JB’s head? Not a good look! I like him tho
“So if you want to know why the Republican Party will remain broken for the foreseeable future, go watch the Ted Cruz game tape from this week. And try to think how it could have been otherwise.”
So @SenatorReid We now know, beyond any reasonable doubt, that Senator Cruz is a paranoid LIAR bit.ly/11ETXPq i.e., a GOP superstar.— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) February 03, 2013
@davidaxelrod thrilled to see Rove is gonna spend a bunch of plutocrat cash fighting Grover & the #Teahadists. Pass the popcorn. #FORWARD— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) February 03, 2013
Maybe i’m too sensitive but I felt like Scott Pelley was taking shots at POTUS.
The economy shrank?!?!? Only by one measure, Mr. Pelley. Soaring by all the other metrics.
With the GDP being such a headline figure Pelley could probably have been criticized if he had not asked the question. However, it gave PBO the opportunity to mention the other metrics you correctly identified.
I think it was ok. The economy DID shrink, that’s a fact. But, the President was able to put that fact in context, and provide a little more info than we get from the media. I thought the interview was good – and respectful, allowing the President to provide complete answers without interruption. No silly nonsense like the Fox “News” crap, or the “do your underage daughters have posters of grown men on their walls” garbage.
Theo, Bill—-you guys are right. it was a good interview.
Wide ranging interview: Economy, Taxes, Sequester, Women in Combat, Safety of Football, Allowing Gay People in the Scouts.
I chuckled when Pres. Obama specifically mentioned closure of the carried interest loophole. Romney is screaming in his car elevator right now.
Well, I guess I missed the interview huh? I was in the kitchen cooking my beer chicken and fixins. I was expecting to call me in when the interview started. What do I find as I peek around the door? Cookeman, mouth wide open, snoring on the recliner. I’m like, ‘cookeman, cookeman, is he on yet, is he, is he!?!’ He goes, ‘huh…er….uh….um…who….oh….well….’ Sigh, maybe I’ll catch the video.
And of course —AP: Breaking news! Obama says scouting should be open to gays! President Obama is correct, of course, equal opportunities for all, but AP plucked what they considered to be the most controversial and blasted a Breaking News! bulletin on that. That’s all our news media is any more—–just controversy provokers.
You know the media is so dam stupid. Why is that Breaking News? Here’s something for you AP: Believe it or not , not every gay man is after little boy, just like every Catholic Priests are not after little boys.
I got a kick out of the White House releasing the picture of President Obama skeet shooting. Just to mess with the media and wingnuts heads. (smirk)
Posting my live tweets for LadyTNT who was at work and couldn’t watch the interview. Hope this helps. :D

Thanks. I did see it though! :)

Can't but smile when some claim @MarkKnoller (he of the ceaselessly dull anti-Pres Obama tweets) is unbiased. Oh yeah?! http://t.co/sZgrDCBq— TheObamaDiary.com (@TheObamaDiary) February 03, 2013
Knoller is so bitter – it must be terrible to be him. Especially now that President Obama has been re-elected, re-inaugurated and reinvigorated by the American people. Nothing Knoller has done could prevent it from happening, and he’s got to live with that fact for the next four years! Lovely!!
+ 1,000,000,000 Theo! His bitterness is delicious. It oozes from his every pore!
I have NO idea how to do this–imbed video so I am going to share the link and either hope it works or that someone will fix it for me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb-J17iWOJk. This is the story of Jason Witten, Dallas Cowboys player who won the 2013 Walter Peyton Award this year. He is from our hometown and has quite the story. Get the tissues ready!
I love Jason Witten, he and DeMarcus Ware are my two favorite Cowboys.
I am firing up the smoker on tuesday.
