Thanks to those on previous thread and here for letting me know; had not heard (I live in AL, but seldom watch local news; have been trying to check on this situation a couple of times a day). I texted my son immediately just what was posted here; he is probably enroute home from work; he feels these things so deeply and has been very concerned. So again, TODers, thank you. I get virtually all of my news here – everyone here is awesome.
Its a done deal Sen Hagel. Cochran R- MS Johans R-NE are yes votes makes 57 w/ dems. Blunt and now McCain SAY NO TO FILIBUSTER. Count Murkowski and or Collins. They wont even bother filibustering now. Congrats Sec of Defense Hagel. And PBO for calling their bluff.
I think Cindy and Megan are telling him to STFU, reign it in, put a lid on it, or it’s over. Cindy, especially has to be pretty fed up with him since ’08. Megan tried to put a good face on his bad behavior, now even that is gone.
Cookemom, I agree with you. McFool probably looked at all of the bad press, watched his old a%% in action, and saw what a fool he made of himself. Also a lot of folks wrote about his legacy.
I hope that the little boy is safely returned to his loved ones. If the captor killed himself, but let the kid live, that may say something about the negotiators getting him to identify with his victim.
yes, that is what I’m hearing as well. I’m just glad they were able to have him connect on some sort of personal level with the kid which may have prevented him from doing something even more horrible. His birthday is Wednesday.
The more our president speaks plain, common sense, the more lunatic his detractors ( and especially the NRA) seem. He’s saying nothing radical here, not threatening anyone’s rights, just laying out some sensible steps that can and should be done. Every time he does this he throws the NRA -owned cowards in Congress into sharp relief. He never has to call them crazy–he just has to be reasonable so that their craziness becomes harder and harder for even the dimmest wits to miss.
I think you’re right, Jackie. The fact that LaPierre was told to his face that he’s ridiculous by someone who has been known to be a right wing tool… it says something. And also the fact that the NRA ad was widely circulated during and after the Superbowl, with LaPierre contradicting himself.
A steady drip, drip, drip of reason, empathy, and specific efforts is something the GOP has now demonstrated they have no capacity to respond, rationally and in the interest of the vast majority of Americans. And the Nation will continue to distance itself from the few plutocrats, the corporate media shills, and the ever shrinking ‘base’ that is the GOP.
Law enforcement got underground and shot kidnapper—–not sure if it was by an alternate route or the constructed entrance. Confirmed boy taken by ambulance to hospital and is safe.
Authorities confirm that they moved in today, due to growing concern of the mental condition of kidnapper. it seemed to be deteriorating during negotiations.
They saw the kidnapper holding a gun. The law enforcement work was remarkable. there was only a PVC pipe from the bunker and only one way in or out of the bunker. Somehow, and with the help of the media, they were able to compromise the bunker and figure out a way to be able to not only see into the bunker, but build and enter through another entrance. The media didn’t broadcast any of the authorities coming and going. The kidnapper had a TV and this may have been a very different outcome had he known they were digging their way in.
Hat’s off to all involved and {{{{hugs}}}} to that little boy’s family.

So, let me see if I have this right. Loser Rick Santorum says that he doesn’t think the Boy Scouts will survive as an organization if it “allows” gays. We know that, among others, Boy Scouts who become Eagle Scouts are often sponsored by U.S. Congresspeople for entry into our military academies. I know, from my own personal career experience, that the Navy is totally supportive of the Boy Scout organization. Our U.S. military, all of the services, now “allows” gays in its all-volunteer ranks (as in: we know you’ve been here forever, and now we’re gonna let you). The military is surviving quite nicely. Haven’t double checked, but I’m thinking Rick was neither a Boy Scout nor a volunteer military service member. Yes, I think my original premise stands: Rick Santorum is a loser.

Rick Santorum ought to look at his own party and their treatment of gay people. GOP is not going to survive if they continue to think being a bigot is a way to get votes.
I pray America won’t EVER see things his way. The only way we can keep this from happening is to continue to be active in the political process…local and nationally. PBO has taught us WE ARE THE CHANGE…WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT….WE WILL NOT GO BACKWARDS.
S&P To Face Charges From States, U.S. Over Wrongdoing Before Financial Crisis: Report
Reuters | Posted: 02/04/2013 2:18 pm EST | Updated: 02/04/2013 3:47 pm EST
Feb 4 (Reuters) – Federal and state prosecutors intend to bring civil charges against Standard & Poor’s for wrongdoing in its rating of mortgage bonds prior to the 2008 financial crisis, The Wall Street Journal said on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Allegations against the McGraw-Hill Cos unit will center on the model used to rate the bonds and will be made in lawsuits to be filed as soon as this week, the newspaper said, citing the people.
A move by U.S. officials would be the first federal enforcement action against a major credit rating agency over alleged illegal behavior tied to the financial crisis.
Several state attorneys general are expected to join the case, the newspaper said.
Now what do you think CNN would have done WITHOUT the photo?
Oh man, CNN doing an actual, serious examination of 'Skeet-gate'. Who are these people? Glenn Kessler? Sheesh— Josh Marshall (@joshtpm) February 04, 2013
It is ashame what CNN has become. I remember the day when Ted Turner own CNN and the network was respected, now it’s become a joke like FOX. Last night if I was any where near Don Lemon I would have slap the yellow off of him. To think I used to like him. Before the Super Bowl was over he there at CNN was already pushing some kind of conspiracy with the lights going out. He talked about that for ten minutes or more.
Crikey, yes, that is weird. Is this just her post-politics (??) site, where her people can be contacted to book her for speaking engagements and stuff?
It’s a nice picture, and it does say “scheduling request” under the “contact” tab. However, there are no disclaimers saying that it is or isn’t associated with Hillary Clinton herself. Who knows?
Not so weird. She’s always said she’s going to continue to be a public figure – she just wants time to decide in what capacity. Many people were quick to leap to decide that future for her by prematurely declaring her to be the Dem nominee for 2016, despite her protestations. She has so many causes in which she’s interested, plus she plans to write more books. It makes sense that she would set up an internet presence, if that is her account.
I think she will be involved in global women’s initiatives. She’s always been about empowering women around the world and even during her many visits to other countries on state business, she’s always managed to visit or highlight women’s conditions. She also always seemed to interject a comment or two on the topic into her press conferences.
I have always felt as tho she is heading that way and I still believe it. Time will tell, but mark my words

I have to admit, I was really worried when I saw all that snow drift (or smoke?) around Air Force One when it was taking off. That place is mighty cold!
I think that’s the longest I’ve ever held my breath. And the camera-men were talking about the trailing snow, the runway length, etc. At one point, it looked like the plane was skidding sideways, but I think it was just the camera angle. And when the President ran up those stairs, I was screeching at my TV saying, “hold on to the railing – it’s slippery out there!”. I think my heart aged a couple of years…
OK TODers, we are a little cold up here. We are to get some more snow tho. I will have to look at the pictures at smartypants again. Good ones of the plane landing. I came in, in a snowstorm a few years back, they were still plowing the runways, we came close to clipping a snowbank with one of the wins\gs. Was just a little scarey. It took me 5 hours to get home from the airport and 5′ of snow to get to my door. That was in my younger days.
Yikes! I used to live in Edmonton, Alberta, where we had some of the worst weather in a populated Canadian city. It was horrendous, and I have no idea how we ever survived. I’ve smartened up and now live in California, where I put the heater and the fireplace on if the temperature drops below 50 degrees.
I used to live in Edmonton, Alberta too. We then moved to Halifax, then California. We loved Edmonton, but there were no jobs so we had to leave. If we had gotten jobs, we probably would not be in Cali, so I don’t mind.

So, I’m reading “World War Z”, because I have every intention of watching the movie when it comes out in June. In the “Introduction”, the author, writing as a survivor of the Zombie Wars, details the parlous state in which humanity finds itself. And he says, paraphrasing, “Even the United States, with its booming economy and universal health care, has trouble caring for the survivors.” Obamacare will save us from zombies!
I don’t usually go for the apocalyptic novel, but the trailer for the movie may be the best one I’ve seen in many a year. So, I figured I should try reading it.
After seeing all the clips about the “Living Dead” during the Superbowl, I might even get into that show, since Lovely Plains put me on to the free month on Netflix. My sister is always raving about that show…

Don’t bet the farm on it getting out of the House. It’ll probably just sit there on Boner’s desk, or some watered down version that excludes women will pass.
The sticking point was they wanted to just allow this protection to some women. Trying to divide us again I suppose. Objections were to affording protections to native american and non-citizens women. There was a 3rd class they wanted to exclude but I can’t remember who at the moment.
I read somewhere that we shouldn’t keep using the term discrimination or say it’s bias or prejudice when talking about lack of support for social changes affecting minorities, LGBTs, and women – that the basis for all of it is plain old BRUTALITY. This time, brutality – or violence – is even in the name of the law. And they’re against it. And it’s 2013.
Rev Al just listed all the conspiracy arguments about the pic of PBO shooting. The funniest was the last: “I don’t remember Obama having a pot belly!” Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!! Omg! if that’s a pot belly, then I’m nine months prego! Hahahahahahahahahahhahhahahahahahahaha!!!!
I just poked my head in to see that the conspiracy also pertains to how many times the President changes his clothes in a day? Really? This is the greatest testimony to the President’s success, if the right wing loons (and their media puppets) can only worry about the President’s wardrobe changes, and they’ve completely forgotten about the economy, jobs, war, terrorism, etc.

Isn’t it beautiful LunarSea? At first I didn’t feel it was the best portrait of her, but – at the risk of trying to sound like an art critic – the dignity and determination shines through. Love it.
More importantly: what’s he wearing to bed? It has great impact on our national security. Is it pjs or boxers? Are they made in America or did he outsource his drawers makers? More at 10 on TEAbagger nation station CNN.
Let’s hope they don’t go that far. The man deserves a little privacy. I saw earlier that they were already talking about his wardrobe changes, and the fact that they know whether he has a little potbelly is a bit too close for comfort (for anyone outside of the TOD crowd, of course…)
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill raising the government’s borrowing limit, averting a default and delaying the next clash over the nation’s debt until later this year.
The legislation temporarily suspends the $16.4 trillion limit on federal borrowing. Experts say that will allow the government to borrow about $450 billion to meet interest payments and other obligations.
This is great news. I hope all countries rally around these two nations to help them achieve this goal. Nice to see other countries stepping up to the plate to lead, too. First France in Mali, now the UK in the Middle East. The GOP pose too much of a problem internationally – so it’s good to see other countries stepping in to get more stature and share some of the responsibility for keeping the world safe. It will put a dampening effect on future right wing war mongering, should the GOP ever get back into power.
Hearing from my Fl. relatives about everyone—-and I mean everyone—-filing claims with BP, recovering damages from oil spill. BP has $7.8 billion to disperse and they’re handing it out right and left. Any biz, or occupation, which can show a downturn in 2010—–does not need to be those directly affected, like fishermen and coastal hotels, restaurants—–but any who can claim a ripple affect, which is just about everyone. Know a real estate guy who just had a claim of $486,000 approved, pool guys said to be getting $100,000 claims approved. Approving 95% of claims, average approval is $75,000. All coastal states affected—La., Ga., Ms., Fl. —are eligible. Need to show tax returns from 2007-2011. Lawyers are jumping, signs said to be lining roads, take 25%, no fee unless claim approved.
This is good news – the economy could do with a boost from this region. I hope some of them come back to thank the Obama Administration. I believe those who suffered a similar fate in Alaska are still waiting to be heard. I also hope that these people will think twice when they demand more oil drilling, and reject any attempt to slow it down to make sure there are sufficient safety regulations and processes in place.
Hi Y’all….I have to revisit the discussion that I woke up to this morning b/c it has been on my mind all day. Coming home and cutting on tv, apparently it has been quite the topic of conversation all day and tonight too…At first, I thought the discussion was rather comical and semi chimed in…got rather bored and stopped reading but today I kept having thoughts about how I reacted to the picture. My first thoughts were to shrug my shoulders and move on b/c seeing anyone with a gun just doesn’t interest me. Do I care if PBO enjoys skeet shooting? NO…In fact there are a lot of sports that PBO has done or might do that don’t interest me and I don’t particularly care to see a picture of him doing them…..now the bodysurfing ones are top of my list of must see media…tennis might be nice too ; )……what bothers me about the whole thing is that he HAD to release it….WHY???….because PBO has been so disrespected and maligned about everything he says or does or doesn’t say or doesn’t do…He always has to provide evidence about EVERYTHING……WHY????? ……the press does not respect PBO b/c he is black….pure and simple..I was embarrassed by all those white White House press corp asking the questions of Jay Carney ….it’s the press that is pushing this story rather than gun violence policy. What I have concluded is that if gun control policy fails you can lay it in the laps of all the idiot people who call themselves journalists and the blood of victims of gun violence is on their hands. Why would any rational person CARE if PBO has ever shot a gun? What does that have to do with all the people being killed by the gun violence in the country?
Excellent speech PBO! Evenly presented with calming and respectful delivery.
Congrats on 1st!
Chips, everyone – CNN Live indicates they will be updating on the AL hostage crisis soon ….
Congrats on first place, cookemom!
Good job on first Cookemom.

Number 4 ain’t bad I think.
I thought you were talking about the Republican House of Representatives when you listed Hemorrhoids.

Wonder what amk will do with three blondes? Must be a joke there. Do they tell people of their medical problems or do they assume they know.
hostage standoff in Alabama news. Standoff is over per MSNBC but no further info yet. A loud boom was heard and an ambulance on road to bunker.
Press conference coming up.
Cookemom – we reported the same news. I hope the news is good all around! Apparently, it’s the little boy’s sixth birthday this week.
Reporting that hostage is alive; kidnapper is dead … being confirmed by tweets from all the major news orgs …
The hostage situation with the five year old boy is over. Press conference coming up in the next 30 minutes (or so). Not yet sure what happened.
I hope it’s good news for the little 5 yr. old—–I just saw law enforcement giving high fives—–so that was encouraging so I’m hopeful.

wooo hooo..Hagel will do a great job..Maybe old man McCain will sit down and STH up..
Thank you Chips for the speech.

The ad for gun control wasn’t shown nationally. I only knew because of Internet. Not here and channel we watch comes from Denver.
That’s too bad, although, I’ve seen it all over MSNBC today and also all over the internet – so that may be enough.
That ad was only circulated in the east coast, primarily Dc area. coverage of it on cable channels gave it more exposure.

I used to live in Edmonton, Alberta too. We then moved to Halifax, then California. We loved Edmonton, but there were no jobs so we had to leave. If we had gotten jobs, we probably would not be in Cali, so I don’t mind.
It’s funny how many people I run into in California who used to live in Edmonton! We all came to our sense, clearly…
Theo, & where’s that pic showing his flossing his teeth! LOL!
Ha! I think the President will only take offense at the talk of his “potbelly”. Poor guy…
FLOTUS will do a Let’s Move that Faux Potbelly! No worries! LOL!
Oops! This was response to yours below! Darn devices!
Here is another study – anti-Obama propaganda disguised as “concern” about gun violence.
I don’t think you’re in my climate, but, if you were, I’d ask you, “Long winter?”
Enjoy. (I’ve got a friend “just like you,” who would have gone on to expound on the trailer, so … uh … thanks!)
I was actually hoping for the link to the trailer…
See what I mean. Zombie lovers are all over the place!
After seeing all the clips about the “Living Dead” during the Superbowl, I might even get into that show, since Lovely Plains put me on to the free month on Netflix. My sister is always raving about that show…
My oldest granddaughter thrives on those goodies. I don’t get it, myself, but each to their own!
It’s a new fascination for me.
my son likes those zombie shows; not my cup of coffee
*not my cup of coffee*
Me neither, Barb!
Here you go!
seriously creepy – looks like it will hold viewers on the edge of their seats.
Right? I doubt I’ll be able to take a breath during the whole thing.
That actually looks really good! Scary, but good. Thanks!
Yippee!
Native American women.
yeah, thanks for fixing
They didn’t want the protection to extend to women in same-sex relationships who suffer domestic abuse.
That’s it!
I just fell out & the diagram! LOL!
It’s more to do with his scandal-free life and presidency, I think. They’re desperate for anything to feed the buzzards on their street.
And those buzzards have their mouths open just waiting for any sordid morsel, I see…
Glad I didn’t try to go. I once tore a tag off a mattress, even though I was warned.
Oh, brother.
LOL!!
And yet Limpballs and Beck the Deluded get to pollute our airwaves SMH
Had to unfollow someone on twitter for having a sideways avi. No one special but it really really bothered me for some reason.
HaHa!
Weird, right?
Very. I guess they want to be unique.
I loath conspiracy theories, but in this case I’d just love it if the DNC orchestrated this somehow! May ALL RW factions waste as much of their money, time and energy as possible trying to kill each other!!!
I am all for Magapie’s suggestion.
Wow I don’t use stamps often but I’m getting a bunch of these for sure! How cool is that
Isn’t it beautiful LunarSea? At first I didn’t feel it was the best portrait of her, but – at the risk of trying to sound like an art critic – the dignity and determination shines through. Love it.
Yes, there’s a quiet determination sort of look in her face.
She actually looks like she’s giving those racists the side-eye, saying “how you like me now”? I love it! It’s definitely long overdue.
What is our President having for supper tonight? Will the media give us some insights into this matter?
I’m still waiting to hear what he had for breakfast. Although, I can’t blame the media for being fascinated with this fascinating man.
More importantly: what’s he wearing to bed? It has great impact on our national security. Is it pjs or boxers? Are they made in America or did he outsource his drawers makers? More at 10 on TEAbagger nation station CNN.
That may be going a step too far in the “inquiring minds want to know” department… seems more like the very naughty mat brigade…
Let’s hope they don’t go that far. The man deserves a little privacy. I saw earlier that they were already talking about his wardrobe changes, and the fact that they know whether he has a little potbelly is a bit too close for comfort (for anyone outside of the TOD crowd, of course…)
Oh yeah.

Not trivial ….
Wow!

You speak TRUTH, Kathryn!
