Ireland 2, Poland 0. Just sayin’

 Ireland+v+Croatia+-+Group+C-+UEFA+EURO+2012

So, why have I been missing from the interwebs the last 3-ish hours?

Busy watching Ireland annihilate Poland 2-0 – TWO!!!! – (in the most meaningless friendly football game ever known to man).

Back in a bit – once I slober up.

PS Sincere apologies to TODers with Polish blood, I dont mean to offend … ah, well, actually, I do.

Smoke on this, babies:

We are having a major financial crisis over here with a speech from Noonan in a few minutes at 11 PM.
Chips, you did note the football match fixing that was just exposed. Has nothing to do with tonight’s match, however.

    • February 6, 2013 at 6:02 pm

OSG, I sincerely hope you’re not insinuating Ireland could only beat Poland if there was skulllduggery involved? :???:

Gotta go eat, see ya soon.

    • February 6, 2013 at 6:05 pm

Who the hell gives a speech an hour before midnight?!

No, This is dead serious! We may have triggered a bond problem and Ireland is going to have to pass some emergency legislation before 8 AM before the market opens on which the bonds trade. The “speech” is now postponed until midnight when there will also be a vote in the Dail. The entire Dail is sitting in session and will sit all night if necessary to solve this, except the opposition has not had an opportunity to read the legislation on which it is expected to vote at midnight.

        • February 6, 2013 at 6:35 pm

Jesus. Sounds like a right mess. I thought Ireland was starting to pull out of the meltdown?

Ireland just can’t afford to keep making those 3 1/2 billion prom note payments annually and one is coming in March. Europe won’t make a deal to stretch these out over like 40 years apparently. Along the way, however, some technical bond default occurred during these discussions and it will take legislation to fix. I don’t understand it all yet and neither does the opposition. Ireland is on its knees.

News Corporation has reported a more-than-doubling in profits, but spent another $56m to cover costs related to the defunct News of the World.

Net income for the three months to December came in at $2.38bn (£1.52bn) thanks to strong growth at its cable networks, which include Fox TV.

Newscorp also owns newspaper titles, including the Wall Street Journal and the Times newspapers in the UK.

It closed the News of the World in 2011 following the UK phone hacking scandal.

The cost to News Corp of its continuing investigations into the News of the World during the three-month period represented just 2.4% of its profits, and was down from $87m a year ago.

There’s big money to be made in lying to people and spreading hate, fear and ignorance, I see. What a shame. They could have done something more productive with their lives, that would leave the world better than they found it.

And Murdoch is trying to buy the Chgo Trib and the LA Times—–will eventually own all of U.S. media? Are we heading to the day when one corporation owns everything? (used to be my joke nightmare, now not so funny)

Students Mobilize as Extreme New Anti-Choice Bill Surfaces in the Kansas Legislature

We do it because we know that the emerging generation of pro-choice leaders is the most valuable—and untapped—resource we have in combating the rampant assault on sexual and reproductive freedom. We know that young people are the only ones with the power and growing political momentum to shift the status quo in a meaningful and sustainable way.

There is more at stake for young people in 2013 than ever before, and the moral imperative in front of us is clear. We must invest in the emerging generation of progressive leaders now, or risk losing everything.

Will this EVER end??? I did scan through most of the comments. Certainly not what I expected for the most part. Most are fed up with the stupidity of the TN R’s. However, people keep electing them.

House votes 253-167 to require balanced budget date from President Obama

This is just pure, and meaningless, theatrics! It’s also pure projection on the part of Republicans! The majority Republicans controlling the House of Representatives can’t come up with a balanced budget so they are shifting both the responsibility and blame on President Obama. It’s Eric Cantor and his fellow right wingers, and not President Obama, who need to heed his quoted statement. It’s shame that our lazy and unethical media allows Cantor and other GOP members to get away with saying and doing nothing as long as they blame everything on President Obama.

Maybe the President should just do the same crap that Paul Ryan does – make something up and present it like it’s actually feasible. The media never questions Paul Ryan’s math – maybe the President can get away with that strategy, too?

        February 6, 2013 at 10:16 pm

I doubt that. What would you want to bet that there wouldn’t be a FEW DEMs, not Republicans, questioning the President’s math right away?

Hi there, Theo! I’m here, bouncing in and out with the result that I haven’t a clue what’s really happening in an on-going sense. I find it harder to dialogue when I don’t really know what happened before (much the same way I hate not seeing the start of a movie) so when I’m in-house I try to keep my lips zipped and listen in order to decipher the back story. OTH, my contractor finished tweaking *my* bathroom tonight so I’m quite happy…except I don’t like the colour paint I chose now that it’s on the wall! He’s supposed to start on my stairs tomorrow and I hope he comes. To date he tends to work well and really late one to two days, then phones midway through the next to say he can’t make it for whatever reason. Crossing my fingers.

Here’s my football story. (real football, not that fake soccer football) Sortof a football story anyway. Pardon this, and maybe you have to be from Chgo to appreciate this, but I just read about the VERY ROMANTIC engagement story of Bears QB Jay Cutler and Jennifer Cavalleri in Chgo Trib. See, she had just spent time with him in Chgo and then left to go back to Ca. and they were texting each other—“Oh, should we get married?” “Yeah, I guess so.” And so then he sent her an engagement ring in the mail!!! Hahahahahaha. So typical Cutler.
And haha—just reminded me of my mom and dad’s engagement story—–my dad gave my mom a gift of a pair of nylons (??? I guess this pair of hosiery was a real treat at one time) Told her not to open it until she got back in her house after a date. In the bottom of the box was an engagement ring. Neither mentioned it for weeks.

Fake soccer football? You mean the one you actually play with your feet? ;-)

Go ahead and TEACH, Liberal Librarian! Dotster is confused about what is real and fake football. I’ve always wondered why our American game is called “football” when most of it is played by hands. The only rare times feet are used are: kicking off, punting, and kicking a field a goal or extra point. The majority of the game is played by hands. Whereas what dotster calls ” that fake soccer football” is played almost entirely by feet, except for the gaol keepers. In soccer, touching the ball by any player, other than the goal keeper, results in a penalty.

If we Americans were honest, we would call our football, hand-ball. The ball is either handed out by the quarterback to a running back, or thrown to a receiver who catches it with his hands. The players, both on offense and defense tackle with their hands and not their feet. Whereas in soccer, if you grab a player with your hands you are likely to incur a penalty. And if you repeat that you are likely to earn a yellow card and eventually a red card which results in your being kicked out of the game.

If you are not skilled enough to use your feet in soccer you can’t play the game. If you are a receiver or running back who can’t hold on the ball, or if you are a quarterback who can’t throw the ball accurately, you can’t play American football. So, how can the American football, played almost exclusively with hands, be more real than the football played by feet throughout the rest of the world?

Or, Nath, for minimum confusion since there is already handball, call American football ‘soccer’ – after all one could safely say that in addition to your description, the players sock* each other a lot. ;)

*sock = (slang) to strike or hit hard

now i understand shy we refer to the WH press corps as “Jackals”..

.i printed out a copy of the transcript from Jay Carney’s Press conference yesterday…i wanted to ready what Jay said about the “leaked White Paper:…

it is simply amazing how much they interrupt him…diss him….are just plain rude….when i listen to the questions and how they are phrased..i often wondered if they all got together to practice their perfomance…it is indeed a sparring match…trying to do a comeuppance with Jay Carney….

but the more amazing thing is how JayCarney handles the jackals…..

    Ooooooooooooooo weeeeeeeeeee
