Chat away, morning/afternoon/night owls

I can’t get enough of this little fella – Colin Romesha, the son of Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha, peeks around the corner of President Barack Obama’s lectern before a presentation ceremony at the White House, Feb. 11

Yeah, Susanne I much prefer to hear PBO ‘live’, but when that’s not possible I love knowing that I’ll always find him at TODville without any punditry! You’ve just reminded me of another reason I should go to bed. Toodle-di-doo for now.

I shall be watching from the UK at 2.a.m. I can’t wait! 2 years ago the SOTU was on my birthday, this year it is on my angel baby’s birthday, he would have been 14 had he lived. As sad as it was to lose him we always celebrate the fact that we had the privilage to hold him for a day, my beautiful son is always so up beat about it and we always have a b.day cake for our angelbaby. It will make it even more special to start the day with SOTU.

Thanks jackie, susanne, dudette and hopefruit your comments mean a lot to me. We always try to make it a positive day and we celebrate his life – as short as it was- with love and happiness that we have been blessed with. Although God has 4 of our babies we have been blessed with our beautiful boy here with us and the privilage of the others for as short a time as we knew them. (3 lost in pregnancy and 1 at just less than a few hours old) Don’t get me wrong I love them desperately and would love them to all be here but the day we burried angelbaby I vowed to be positive and to remember him with a smile as well as tears. 14 years on that is how I remember all of them and I know that they are in the arms of Jesus.

You guys are a Godsend as is this site, I love you all.

Jill Scott “I Keep / Still Here”
This video is a statement about domestic and sexual abuse.
There are some upsetting images, but nothing that might not be shown on the nightly news at the dinner hour. Some of the women in it are distressd, but not dis-dressed (I hope that allays any concerns in that area). Although the person who uploaded it to YouTube starts the video with a disclaimer about it containing “Graphic Images” –she clarifies that statement in a comment below the video: “Some people don’t like to see tears, bruising, truth of what the aftermath of a rape and/or abuse victim looks like. So, Graphic images.” I think that disclaimer was more for dramatic effect. You’ll see what I mean. If it offends anyone, my sincere apologies (and Chips feel free to remove).

What I love about this picture is seeing that little cutie pie peeking around the podium of the President of the United States, with in the background a phalanx of Medal of Honor winners. Cuteness to tug at the heart, symbol of the power of our beloved president, and living examples of unimaginable courage. Pretty awesome.

this is a powerful message and a horrible truth. but just think for a minute– if a fourth of all women are victims of domestic violence, how many men are abusing women every day? what proportion of the male population is violent at home? and how many of those are in congress? in state legislatures? in positions of authority throughout our society? how many are influencing our laws, which allow this to continue?

        February 12, 2013 at 1:58 am

It’s a very sad thought, Susanne. And just imagine what kind of message Congress is sending to those women who are looking for help, struggling to get enough strength to leave, and then they see that even their government doesn’t give a crap about them. The damage that the Republicans and their puppet masters and media whores have inflicted on this country will reverberate for years – and much of it will be behind closed doors.

Yes, it will, Theo. On all fronts– domestic violence, climate, the economy, health care, women’s rights in general, voter suppression and election rigging– the cost of the 2010 election will be incalculable. We will be paying in blood and lost lives for years.

‘ Vice President Biden said Monday that those who claimed the Obama administration was trying to take away guns from law-abiding citizens were spinning “a bunch of malarkey.”

“I know that’s a word you’ve never heard before, although it’s now in the dictionary,” Biden said at a roundtable discussion with law enforcement officers in Philadelphia. “That’s just simply not true. And to be very blunt with you, we’re counting on all of you, the legitimate news media, to cover these discussions because the truth is that times have changed.” ‘

u.n. security council will hold emergency meeting at 9 tues a.m., exactly when pbo delivers his sotu address:

‘ President Barack Obama on Tuesday called North Korea’s latest nuclear test a “highly provocative act” that threatens U.S. security and international peace.

“The danger posed by North Korea’s threatening activities warrants further swift and credible action by the international community,” Obama said in a statement issued early Tuesday. “The United States will also continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies.”

North Korea said it successfully detonated a miniaturized nuclear device at a northeastern test site Tuesday. South Korean, U.S. and Japanese seismic monitoring agencies said they detected an earthquake in North Korea with a magnitude between 4.9 and 5.2.
    ~
The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting Tuesday morning on North Korea’s nuclear test. South Korea’s U.N. Mission informed reporters early Tuesday that the closed-door meeting will begin at 9 a.m. EST.

On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry discussed North Korea’s “continued provocative rhetoric” in a phone call with China’s Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. That followed earlier conversations with Kerry’s counterparts from Japan and South Korea, key U.S. allies in the region.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the three conversations “were remarkably similar” on the importance of implementing the commitments of a January U.N. resolution that toughened sanctions against Pyongyang and warned of “significant action” if it conducted a nuclear test. That resolution was supported by China, North Korea’s only major ally. ‘

      china’s response is ‘ advocating a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula’ :

‘ China expressed its “firm opposition” to erstwhile ally North Korea’s latest nuclear test Tuesday and called for new denuclearization talks.

The statement from the Foreign Ministry reflects Beijing’s growing frustration with its communist neighbor’s provocative behavior, as well as its reluctance to impose more severe measures that could destabilize the North’s hardline regime.
      ~
The statement did not point to any specific actions Beijing would take in response to the nuclear test, the North’s third. But it called on all sides to “respond calmly” and said issues should be resolved within the framework of long-stalled denuclearization talks involving North Korea, China, the U.S., South Korea, Japan and Russia. ‘

your congress at work, getting the best seats for the president’s speech:

‘ To secure an aisle seat, members of Congress have to claim the spot 10 to 12 hours in advance. According to the Washington Post, there’s a devoted group of State of the Union squatters, and scoring five seconds of inane conversation with the president involves a surprising amount of preparation.

Competition for aisle seats is fierce, and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy sent out a note on Monday reminding members of Congress that simply leaving your jacket on a chair doesn’t count. “Members may reserve their seats only by physical presence,” he said. ‘

By Carlo Muñoz and Jeremy Herb
The Topline: Despite the threats of Republican holds and a filibuster, Democrats are moving to get former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) confirmed by the full Senate before the end of the week.

The Senate Armed Services Committee will go first on Tuesday, with a committee vote scheduled for 2:30 p.m. after members are given a chance to give another 2 cents on Hagel’s nomination as Defense secretary.

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said that he expects to bring the nomination to the floor by Wednesday or Thursday for a vote. The push from Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and Reid comes after ranking member James Inhofe (R-Okla.) said Sunday that he would threaten a 60-vote threshold for Hagel’s nomination.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is also threatening a hold on Hagel until the Obama administration answers his questions on its response to last year’s attack in Benghazi, Libya.

But Reid said Monday he was “confident” there would be no filibuster of Hagel, in what would be a first for a Defense secretary nominee.

“There’s never in the history of the country ever been a filibuster on a Defense secretary, and I’m confident there won’t be on this one,” Reid said on the floor Monday.

Republicans just refuse to get it, Marco Rubio is not their savior. Hispanics will not be fool by them putting a color face out in front of their party. They refuse to see that if you stink like a skunk, taking off the old clothes and putting on some new clothes won’t help. Not if you don’t bathe away some of those policies with tend to hurt the poor, middle class, minorities, women. All Rubio is is a clean pair of clothing on a still stinking body.

    http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/cbs-poll-broad-bipartisan-support-for-drone-program

Americans of all partisan stripes overwhelmingly support drone attacks against suspected terrorists, a poll released Tuesday from CBS News showed.

Seventy-one percent of Americans — including 78 percent of Republicans and 70 percent of Democrats — said they support the use of drones against suspected terrorists. Only 20 percent of respondents said they are opposed.

Oh my….SOTU has been trending on Twitter since yesterday. Whenever our President has to give a major speech, the whole country (or planet for that matter) is riveted. The MSM is usually in a mixed state of fear, excitement, obsession, etc.; PBO domestic & international supporters are in a state of anticipation & excitement, the GOP is in a state of heightened distress and arousal.
