Energy Secretary Stephen Chu will be the Cabinet member not in attendance tonight. As per tradition, he will be at an undisclosed location “so the country would have a leader in the event of a catastrophic disaster.”
Some new traditions have taken hold amid the familiar rituals of a State of the Union address, and they seem to have a common goal: drawing some of the spotlight away from the president and on to his audience.
The newest push on the part of lawmakers revolves around a clothing accessory – an attention-grabbing orange lapel pin that more than three dozen lawmakers will wear to signify their intent to “put their country first – ahead of party.”
The initiative by members of the self-described “Problem Solvers Caucus” is sponsored by the group No Labels, a non-profit involving Democrats, Republicans, and independents, and is the latest attempt to restore some collegiality in the ultra-polarized atmosphere inside the Beltway these days.
Another ubiquitous clothing accessory was a green ribbon being worn by many lawmakers – mostly Democrats – in support of Newtown, CT.

I think he is knocking it out of the park … of course, he talked some about energy conservation in our homes – and he was talking to me. Yes. I am guilty. Oh, I recycle … and such. But man, do I use lights, paper, … way too much. So Mr. President, I hear you and humbly will try to do better. You Sir are awesome!
Once you get aware of how much you use, and start the habit of recycling, it becomes second nature. Just start with one thing – like using reusable bags (and remembering to put them in the car…) or giving magazines to doctor’s offices, or switching off your lights as you leave the house and turning down the heat. You’ll find that you start to become aware more often, and then you’ll find opportunities to save the planet all the time – like a super hero!
Thank you Theo for the tips … I do try and reuse bags, and we give our waiting room magazines to the Library, or the Senior Center, etc. but I don’t always turn down the heat or turn off lights when I should.

The highly anticipated cyber order intends to improve information sharing about cyber threats between government and industry and establish a framework of cyber-security best practices that industry would elect to follow. The White House spent the last several months crafting the order after Congress failed to pass cyber-security legislation last year.
During his State of the Union address before Congress Tuesday evening, the president mentioned his recent signing of the executive order and called for Congress to take action to protect the nation’s critical infrastructure from cyberattacks.

I think he is knocking it out of the park … of course, he talked some about energy conservation in our homes – and he was talking to me. Yes. I am guilty. Oh, I recycle … and such. But man, do I use lights, paper, … way too much. So Mr. President, I hear you and humbly will try to do better. You Sir are awesome!

Once you get aware of how much you use, and start the habit of recycling, it becomes second nature. Just start with one thing – like using reusable bags (and remembering to put them in the car…) or giving magazines to doctor’s offices, or switching off your lights as you leave the house and turning down the heat. You’ll find that you start to become aware more often, and then you’ll find opportunities to save the planet all the time – like a super hero!
Getting a water filter, rather than using bottled water, makes a big difference, too.

The sad thing is that in 2011, the parents of Christina Taylor-Greene were in the chamber after their 9 year old was gunned down, and Gabby Giffords was shot in the head. This year, there are over two dozen families in the chamber who are representing all those who have been victims of gun violence.

Seriously John Boehner did not stand to applaud a woman, a proud woman, a proud black woman who is 102 years old. I would applaud if nothing else that she is 102 years old. Her story is inspiring, her life deserves more respect than that.
An unbelievably powerful speech—-has to be the best SOTU speech by anyone ever. Every line—-every idea—–just beautiful. So many emotional moments. He is so far above and beyond all those stone faces in the room. Wow.
