This is so bloody annoying. The GOP don’t want Reid to bring up the Hagel nomination for a vote tomorrow but vaguely “promise” to confirm after they come back from a 10 day recess. What the hell? This is childish beyond belief.
He had the 60 votes but the Republican machine went into overdrive and threatened Republicans who didn’t want to filibuster Hagel. Again I sincerely ask that we stop blaming Sen. Reid for all this GOP madness. This is no time to turn on each other.
CNN, whom one can’t believe, said earlier that they “heard” (probably in the elevator) that the delay until after the recess would allow Chuck Hagel to deliver non-existing documents covering the fake issues and other made-up things that are unresolved in the sick minds of the Rs. A pack of lies by a pack of rats.
At the SOTU, it “came to me” that one of the bitter reasons the Rs were so delighted to hold up Hagel’s confirmation was so that he couldn’t be sitting in the front row as SECDEF to hear the President’s address. That he’d be forced to wait to get any glory for agreeing to serve our country once again. But I realized the best part of all that backfiring for people like McCain was that the man who beat him in ’08 was standing behind the podium giving the address; his “friend” Joe Biden was in the chair behind the President; his “other friend” John Kerry was in the front row as our new SOS, and McCain and his henchman and coyote woman (or whatever her name is) were sitting in the peanut gallery hoping the camera would pan over to their bitter faces once more. Payback is cringeworthy but sometimes comes can haunt ‘em.
The picture of Pres. Obama with the blue cards cracks me up. He looks like a kid who’s up to no good or about to cheat his way to winning a game while thinking the adults can’t see him.
This struck me as stunningly ignorant by Rubio also, that he wasn’t for raising the minimum wage ’cause he wants people to make a lot more than than $9/hr. What??? Ay yi yi yi yi yi yi. Rubio is in dire need of those “critical thinking skills” President Obama just referenced. Mental lightweight.
I’m not sure why congress is having so many “breaks.” They’re on break every damn month for at least 10 days (not counting weekends and holidays). Which I had a job like that, paying me that kind of money and benefits. If they go on recess, can’t PBO recess appoint Hagel?
There are pro-forma sessions to prevent PBO from making recess appointment. But Sec of Defense wouldn’t be an appropriate use because recess appointments are only good for 1 year. That’s why we’re seeing Richard Cordray come up again.
Now the tow line breaks for that doomed cruise ship, so further delays. I cannot imagine being captive on that putrid petri dish cruise—–in addition to little food and no water and no facilities, as they say, ship has no stabilizers, everyone’s sick, ship tilting right and left. What a nightmare.

President Barack Obama did not speak with Libyan leaders as the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was under way last September, the White House acknowleged Thursday in a letter to lawmakers.
White House Counsel Kathy Ruemmler said then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did reach out to Libyan President Mohamed Magariaf at Obama’s request on the same day the attack began, but Obama didn’t personally call the Libyan leader until the following night.
“Secretary Clinton called Libyan President Magariaf on behalf of the president on the evening of September 11, 2012 to coordinate additional support to protect Americans in Libya and access to Libyan territory. At that time, President Magariaf expressed his condemnation and condolences and pledged his government’s full cooperation,” Ruemmler wrote. “The President spoke to President Magariaf on the evening of September 12.”

This morning, we asked for your response to the State of the Union. In just a few hours, President Obama is going to sit down with a group of Americans for a conversation about that speech and his plan to create jobs and strengthen the middle class.
And you should watch it live:
WHAT: President Obama’s Hangout
WHEN: February 14, 4:50 p.m. ET
WHERE: WhiteHouse.gov/Live
The President will talk to Americans from all over the country in a Google+ Hangout. He’ll also take and answer questions that people like you have submitted and voted for.
It should be a great conversation, so be sure to tune in.
Dear @SenatorReid The GOP has violated any notion of filibuster 'reform.' Sir, you should bypass cloture & bring Hagel to a vote TODAY.— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) February 14, 2013
They won’t ‘recess’. They’ve effectively ended any recess power for PBO and apparently any Democratic President. Their stunt was affirmed by Sentelle’s court. And so it stands, for now.
Right now the Sentelle decision stands until it is appealed and litigated at a higher level. I guess PBO can defy the court ruling but I don’t think that is likely.
But something has to give. Republicans are destroying this country and any reasonable governance. This is insane.
Hate to say this, but Harry Reid is about as weak as they can get. Has he been hanging out with Boner or something?
He seems hesitant, afraid and being bullied.
Whatever he had last year, he has lost.
I am having a heard time staying on Reid’s side. This is simply ridiculous. I am praying, that in the end, Hagel will be confirmed but do we need to have ‘all of this drama’ each and every time something comes up. Geez, enough already.
Did we all forget that Boxer, Feinstein, Baucus, Pryor and 3 others or so were not supporting the Filibuster Reform that was being advanced? That was why days later, Harkins(sp) announced his retirement.
Reid has since said that he had no intention of ever supporting anything that would mess with the 60-vote threshold – he wanted procedural reform to speed things along. THIS was all the reform he wanted although he led us to believe he was for serious reform. If he had stood behind filibuster reform he would have strong-armed enough votes. he wasn’t interested in doing that.
This is not the same as Ben Nelson saying that he wouldn’t support any health care reform if it contained a public option. I simply do not believe that Boxer or Feinstein would have been the votes to kill filibuster reform if the Majority Leader who had been lied to by McConnell had stood up and ended at least some of the abuse. remember, we were all scratching our heads when he went behind closed doors with McConnell. Durbin had earlier said that we had the votes for some muscled reform — he specifically said we had the votes to shift the burden to the minority.
Instead Reid reached an agreement with McConnell, a handshake to behave better, and there would be no end to a filibuster unless the Republicans agreed. I know there was some progress made, but not enough to eliminate a spectacle like we’re seeing now.
Majority Leaders are among the most powerful people in our government. Harry dropped the ball on this one – twice. It’s not just about legislation – someone said that to me yesterday. POTUS deserves his appointees, a functioning administration, and the right to place judges that reflect his administration’s vision. Harry Reid should have at least ended the abuse on that.
The 60 votes….didn’t have majority of the senates to reform it weeks ago. However, the Talking Filibuster did have 51 votes. That is the one that Boxer and co were against too.
If it fails, would Reid then insist that the senate is not going on a 10 day break? Why are Dems not everywhere shouting for an up or down vote as TBGOPers would have done? Messaging by Dems….always an uphill battle
This is astounding to me. they should be screaming outrage for an up-or-down vote. It should be orchestrated, it should be loud. If it’s happening, I’m not hearing about it. Outrageous.
It is Not happening. Dems are timidly bad at screaming at the top of their lings to get things done these days. They were great at it until after Reagan…..they some how lost their zeal to be louder.
Anyone seen the complaint going around that Pres.Obama only thinks women should have rights if they are mothers or daughter’s? I’ve seen a couple of tweets. If I see it again I’ll post it here. I’ve tried to keep my cool but……
Seriously, I don’t even have time for this. I even saw a tweet yesterday/today about a petition for POTUS to stop referring to women as mothers/daughters when talking about rights.
They want to be referred to as human beings not by their roles.
My take is this: Most people don’t pay attention to an issue unless it hits close to home. If they see how an issue affects THEIR own mother/daughter they might want to do something. Its not to dehumanize women, its to make others care about people they don’t know. Like, ‘Yeah, this can happen to you and yours’.
Sometimes I don’t understand how people think. This tactic is something that a lot of activists and politicians use, now its sexist.
have you folks seen this? very interesting research on brain structure and function, showing liberals and conservatives have fundamentally different thinking processes:
‘ In particular, a recent study of young adults suggests that liberals and conservatives have significantly different brain structure, with liberals showing increased gray matter volume in the anterior cingulate cortex, and conservatives showing increased gray matter volume in the in the amygdala.

These results suggest that liberals and conservatives engage different cognitive processes when they think about risk, and they support recent evidence that conservatives show greater sensitivity to threatening stimuli. ‘

As always I am coming here late from work, but I am absolutely sick of the non-stop demonization of Sen. Reid. I may be in a minority at TOD on this issue, but I think it’s unfair to blame just the Majority leader on this issue of the filibuster reform, when prominent and seasoned Democrats, including my two Senators from CA, were not entirely on board. I’ve got to get this off my chest, and I know this might get me in hot water with many people here, but I think the way some people at TOD are singling out Reid for attacks on the filibuster reminds me of the emoprogs’ relentless attacks on the President about the public option. In both situations (public option and filibuster), one of the difficulty is that not all the Democratic members of Congress were on board.

It’s a little off, but you get the idea I hope. If you’re alone or like Gary Marshall movies, Valentines Day is a hoot. Date Night for those couples in rut. Red for action and love. Then of course, I’d love to hear you’re favorites. Trivia you could care less about, but my hubby and I had our first date on Feb. 14, 1970. Our senior year in high school. Oh, the Sweetheart Ball. 😻😘💝💘
Have a great Day. I tweeted my favorite video of the First Couple. The were talking about their first date!
Heads up!

Murkowski voted “AYE” We need one more GOP vote I believe.
Senate voting on Hagel right now! That’s what I’m seeing @ Breaking News MSNBC.
I’m watching these jerks in the Senate milling around with their hands in their pockets and chewin’ the fat. How much are we paying these jerks to do this? It’s way too much, whatever it is.
And all the gross backslapping. UGH.
That’s what I’m talkin’ about. Pisses me off!
Guy with counting thing entered chamber
I love seeing PBO w/ kids! Lovely pics, Chips! Thanks!
Chips & TODers, happy Valentine’s Day! Stand firm & get all Cupid’s arrows! Don’t let that little scary dood stop ya!
It is offensive to see how happy GOP is while attempting to destroy our democracy
