Obama’s speech. She used her admitted bias to misrepresent his speech because hey, it’s more fun to mislead an audience than tell them the truth. Pres. Obama spoke about the fact that what makes one a father is the courage it takes to raise a child not make one. Pres. Obama praised single mothers and called them heroic. What Melissa heard was “PRES. OBAMA HATES SINGLE MOTHERS AND HE’S TRYING TO CONTROL THEIR LIVES!!!”
Pres. Obama spoke about including LGBT, adoptive, single, and two parent families in his policy proposals. What Melissa heard was “PRES. OBAMA THINKS SINGLE MOTHERS ARE TO BLAME FOR GUN VIOLENCE!!!” Melissa did not once tell her audience about Pres. Obama’s plan to improve the lives of 20 communities (the program will expand as it goes on) through healthcare, education, jobs, reducing poverty, reducing gun violence, giving all families support , helping fathers get jobs so they can help alongside mothers in providing for their families. Melissa took his very important speech and warped it in a disgusting manner.
Melissa has a father for her child yet she seems to begrudge Pres. Obama wanting that for all children whenever possible. When one begins to sound like Cornel West and Tavis Smiley, one should take a step back.
What Melissa Harris Perry did today is called “Projection.” The white house billed the speech as one about the economy and how to help the middle-class. They never billed it as 100% about gun violence. Melissa did that and then lied about Pres. Obama blaming gun violence on single mothers. She equated his elegant speech about important issues to Romney’s crass moment from the second debate. She didn’t fully listen to Pres. Obama’s speech. Instead she heard what she wanted to hear and went off half cocked. Ignorance at its worst.

I get why TOD is upset with MHP even if MHP herself will never get it.
This has been my main objection to MHP’s entire treatment of this discussion. Her complete and utter dishonesty – from her misrepresentation of PBO’s speech, to her likening his words to that of Mitt Romney’s to her continued doubling down and stacking her panel with only those who agree with and reinforce her initial lies.
Furthermore, she plays victim when called out on it. Melissa simply sidetracked the President’s point about Black men needing to step up and be there for their children into an issue of single moms being blamed for violence – when that was not even his point in the first place. I know she’s trying to get a contract renewed at MSNBC but it should not come at the expense of the President’s efforts to enlist these communities in the progressive change that they seek and need.

I looked at the speech as a whole and not just segments. Everything PBO said connected, including gun violence.

Hey guys, this is a nice scoop about Pres. Obama’s golf weekend. I think golf is one of the most boring games ever and I have no idea how Pres. Obama played for 8 hours but I just compare it to my love of football (soccer to heathens) and then it begins to make sense.
After an eight-hour session with Butch Harmon on Saturday in which he played 27 holes and hit balls in the instructor’s golf studio, Obama was able to coordinate to play with Woods. The two were originally supposed to play at Woods’ home club, The Medalist GC some 30 minutes away in Hobe Sound, but eventually opted for The Floridian, where the President has been based all weekend.
“Just to see the interaction between the two on the range was pretty neat,” said Harmon, who was on the tee. “The President said to Tiger, ‘The last tournament you played was fun to watch. It’s good to see you play well again.’ You could tell he meant it. It just wasn’t a throw it out compliment.”
The round, which also included U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Floridian owner Jim Crane, began with Woods holing out for birdie on the first hole, and continued at a rapid clip. They made the turn in a little more than two hours and eventually opted to play 27 holes overall.
“I like the fact he loves golf,” Harmon said. “Obviously he doesn’t get to play very much. He said it was a real treat for him to come here with his best friends and have a chance to play. But he counts every shot. He doesn’t like gimmes. He putts everything out. He counts all his penalty shots. He thinks about all his shots before he hits them. Some people might say to the President of the United States, ‘Oh, just move it.’ But that’s not him. He loves the game and loves the game the way it’s supposed to be played.”

Sorry—-didn’t see your post, just posted the same. I don’t like golf either, but I am surrounded by golf nuts in my fam and friends group, including mr. dotster. And they all love it beyond reason, will play at every opportunity and in any kind of weather—–from freezing temps into the 100′s—–and not even notice, they are so enthralled. It’s a mystery to me, but this passion exists.

UT, like you I find golf to be such a boring game. At the same time I am exceedingly glad that President Obama likes it and is totally into playing it right. If that’s what makes him relax and rest his mind from all the monumental problems and decisions that he faces every second, minute, hour , day, week, month and year, then I am all for it. And, he doesn’t need no stinking media following him around during a holiday week-end. Why aren’t these media hounds with their families instead of stalking the President.

As far as I’m concerned she explained it pretty well. I understand her position having come from a sometimes fatherless home. I also understand being an absentee father due to varying circumstances.
Melissa Harris Perry knows fully well what President Obama was referring too. She has no excuse here.
She knew he was referring to the well-documented epidemic of men in these urban communities who conceive children but don’t hang around to raise them or provide any financial or other support for them. Some of them in the process of not paying child support for their already-born offspring are busying having additional children with multiple women (and abandoning those when they are born). That is what PBO is referring to, and this is a REAL problem in these communities. If we cannot be at least honest with ourselves about this particular issue without twisting the President’s words into an attack on single moms, then this issue will never be properly addressed.
MHP was a single mom until about a 1 year and a half ago. And I will no longer engage in this conversation. We all have our view points and this is not the forum to ague them.Be blessed.

By the way, I saw Zero Dark Thirty this weekend. Pretty good film, I enjoyed seeing a different angle to the bin Laden story — this time featuring the female intelligence officer that tracked bin Laden for so long. PBO was mentioned briefly as being thoughtful and analytical, but he was not portrayed. The compound raid was the most detailed I’ve seen thus far — it almost seemed like it was given real time, that’s how long it was. Nice work by the lead actress, too — overall it was a good movie experience.
