Steve Benen: With just 10 days to go before brutal sequestration cuts kick in, President Obama has decided to use his bully pulpit, not just to frame the debate and show the way out of this latest manufactured crisis, but also to make his opponents look reckless and irresponsible …. The president had a fairly compelling pitch to present, which had the added benefit of being true….

…. For those who care about reality, the sequester really wasn’t Obama’s idea – it was part of the ransom paid to Republicans when GOP lawmakers held the nation hostage in 2011, threatening to crash the economy and trash the full faith and credit of the United States. Republicans took credit for the sequester and they voted for the sequester.

But as a practical matter, it doesn’t matter whose idea it was. There’s a looming threat to the nation and it kicks in next week. One side is focused on resolving the manufactured crisis with a bipartisan compromise; the other side is focused on how to win a public-relations battle, instead of focusing on fixing the problem they helped create…..

Bloomberg: In the spring of 1986, a grassroots organizer named Barack Obama was walking through a trash-strewn playground on Chicago’s South Side when the sound of gunshots pierced the air.

Obama ducked and glanced nervously at John Owens, an activist working for a local nonprofit, who was giving him a tour of the neighborhood’s parks. “He said: ‘You hear that? Whoa’,” Owens, recalled. “I remember thinking, ‘Well, he hasn’t been around here very long’.”

The president’s three-year stretch as a community organizer in an impoverished section of Chicago gave him a first-hand look at how gun violence affects a community. He’s now drawing upon that experience, and the solutions he saw then, as he crafts a second-term agenda in which gun control finally has political momentum after the Dec. 14 shootings at a Connecticut school…..

ThinkProgress: The Supreme Court’s election-buying decision in Citizens United v FEC enabled wealthy corporations to spend unlimited money to change the course of American elections, and a subsequent lower court decision gave the green light to super PACs funded by unlimited donations from millionaires, billionaires and corporations. Yesterday, the Supreme Court announced it would hear another case — brought by none other than the Republican National Committee — that would go even further towards transforming American democracy into the Wild West.

Washington Post: Since November, President Obama has been promising to do something about extremely long voting lines and other shameful Election Day lapses. Last week, he began to make good on his pledge, unveiling “a nonpartisan commission to improve the voting experience in America,” headed by Bob Bauer and Benjamin Ginsburg, the lawyers for Mr. Obama’s and Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaigns, respectively.

….. critics are already attacking the idea. Conservatives question why the federal government needs to get more involved with voting. Voting-rights activists wonder why the president needs a commission when he could champion any of the sensible reform proposals already sitting in Congress.

But the commission is a good idea, for at least two reasons.

Steve Benen: I suspect most folks have, at least once, accidentally mistaken satirical news for real news. But Spencer Ackerman’s report on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s misstep is a doozy.

On November 14, 2012, Mitch McConnell wrote to Elizabeth King, the Pentagon’s congressional liaison, with a an unusually credulous query. “I am writing on behalf of a constituent who has contacted me regarding Guantanamo Bay prisoners receiving Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits,” McConnell wrote in a letter acquired by Danger Room. “I would appreciate your review and response to my constituent’s concerns.”

…… the United States government is not providing GI Bill benefits to detainees at the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay. What McConnell forwarded to the Pentagon was a satirical piece, published by a terrific online humor outlet. Picture The Onion with a sole focus on the military.

Raw Story: A Republican state representative in Alabama says that her bill to force new restrictions on abortion clinics is necessary because the fetus is “the largest organ in a body.”

…. “When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body,” Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin declared. “That’s a big thing. That’s a big surgery. You don’t have any other organs in your body that are bigger than that.”

…. “My liver, heart, and skin are all very excited that we are now giving organs personhood rights, although the latter is slightly upset about losing out on its ‘largest organ in the human body’ rep,” Jezebel’s Katie J.M. Baker wrote on Monday.

Charles Pierce: ….. Scott Brown took to the local Fox affiliate to explain the bizarre episode in which he got into a Twittery wrangle that ended up with former senator McDreamy exclaiming, “Bqhatevwr!” .. which caused more than a few people to wonder whether or not he was a bit sockless at the time. His explanation for what happened is quite remarkable in its sub-plausibility….

….. I am not buying the pocket-tweet explanation if, for no other reason, than believing that whole colloquy was an accident would require you to believe that McDreamy was sliding down the back of a stegosaurus for that many accidental keystrokes to have occurred.

Whatever, dude.

The PowerPoint That Proves It’s Not Obama’s Sequester After All

    by John Avlon

    ————————————-

With deep sequestration cuts just days away, Congress is on vacation. But they’ve still got plenty of time to play the blame game.
    .
    .
There are a couple problems with this tactic, as my colleague Michael Tomasky pointed out Tuesday. Congress passed sequestration before the president signed it, and the whole self-defeating exercise was carried out in response to Tea Party Republicans’ insistence that we play chicken with the debt ceiling, which ultimately cost America its AAA credit rating.

But here’s the thing. I happened to come across an old email that throws cold water on House Republicans’ attempts to call this “Obama’s Sequester.”

It’s a PowerPoint presentation that Boehner’s office developed with the Republican Policy Committee and sent out to the Capitol Hill GOP on July 31, 2011. Intended to explain the outline of the proposed debt deal, the presentation is titled: “Two Step Approach to Hold President Obama Accountable.”

ALL JOURNALISTS SHOULD BE FACT CHECKERS

Is John Boehner a Labor Economist?

    By Peter Hart

    ——————————-

Republican leader John Boehner must have some expertise when it comes to labor economics. Either that, or the New York Times is allowing him to make misleading claims without being challenged.
    .
    .
This comment goes unchallenged in the piece, so one might conclude that Boehner knows something about the issue.
Or perhaps he doesn’t. A new paper from Center for Economic & Policy Research economist John Schmitt points out that Boehner’s claim is wrong.
    .
    .
A reminder, if one were needed, that the failure to factcheck is not just a problem during presidential campaigns.

GOP Senators Repair Immigration Rift With Obama, Argue With Constituents

    By Margaret Hartmann

    ———————————-

The White House said that in the calls to Rubio, Lindsey Graham, and John McCain, the president “thanked the Senators for their leadership,” but made it clear that “he is prepared to submit his own legislation if Congress fails to act.” Following the call, Rubio changed his tune. His spokesman clarified that a representative from the senator’s office has participated in five meetings with White House officials, and said, “The Senator told the President that he feels good about the ongoing negotiations in the Senate, and is hopeful the final product is something that can pass the Senate with strong bipartisan support.”

Despite the public posturing, the Associated Press reports that Senate aides say negotiations are going well, and Obama’s backup plan might even encourage Republicans to rally around the congressional plan. It’s possible that was the whole point of floating parts of the president’s blueprint, though the White House insists the leak was unintentional.

So why did Rubio say the President’s plan would be “dead on arrival”. Is it compulsory to take the opposite view to President Obama if you are a republican. Can there NEVER be a meeting point? Every person who meets and speaks with the President says his people skills are the best of anyone they have ever met – so does the gop hate the color of his skin or are they fixated (as are many right wing folks around the world) that they have “a divine right to rule”.

The fetus is the largest organ in the body? The fetus?!?! The GOP need to pick one: The fetus is an organ or is a human being. It can’t be both. It’s not that special and can’t be winning both prizes in batshit crazy land. The uterus is highly offended. It thought it held first place in the GOP’s insane mind.

UT, these guys prove that you can grow up in America, possibly get a degree (?), run for office and win and never have cracked a science book or spent one minute listening to a science teacher. Plus you would have to have gone through all your life with your eyes closed to any learning whatsoever or ever encountered a woman in the early states of pregnancy. To be that ignorant in any other country would probably earn you derision and maybe a job sweeping floors in a bowling alley. But in the good ole’ USA you get to stand up in a state assembly, proudly make a jackass of yourself and introduce bills as if you really had a brain. Ah America!

What’s It Like to Wake Up From a Tea Party Binge? Just Ask Florida!

    By Stephanie Mencimer

    ——————————–

But even if Scott ends up a one-term governor, his legacy won’t easily be reversed. When he rejected the high-speed rail money, the state passed up an opportunity to upgrade its underfunded transit system that it may not soon see again. Florida’s internationally renowned mosquito control system took a half century to build, but only three years to decimate. Likewise with public health, says Nan Rich, who fought the cuts in the state Senate: “The infrastructure is being destroyed and responding to public health crises becomes more difficult,” she says. “I shudder to think if what happened with Hurricane Sandy had happened here.”

The tea party’s influence may be waning, but that might not matter in the end. “I don’t think it’s insurmountable to recover from dismantling 50 years’ worth of great government structures that made society in Florida better,” says Rep. Pafford. “But it could be a decade before we really begin to address some of these issues. It’s gonna take dollars.” Pafford thinks the biggest task ahead is “rebuilding the confidence of the average Floridian that an elected person like the governor can actually do good things.” What’s happened here, he says, “is really an incredible example of how government should not work. Hopefully people can learn from Florida’s tea party experiment.”

The Morning Plum: Americans will blame GOP for sequester

    By Greg Sargent

    ——————————————

As a substantive matter, if John Boehner really believes we can achieve substantial deficit reduction with spending cuts alone, then perhaps he should go ahead and name the specific spending cuts Republicans would support that would accomplish this. That aside, I continue to be perplexed by the apparent belief among Republicans that they will be able to shift the blame for the sequester entirely to Obama. Boehner’s claim that the American people “don’t support trading spending cuts for higher taxes” is highly dishonest: in reality, we’re talking about closing loopholes and deductions enjoyed by the rich and corporations; and the American people oppose bringing down the deficit only through cuts to specific programs. The American people know who stands for a deeply unbalanced approach, and who favors a more judicious balance.

The so-called media is always talking about how The President is in a reality “bubble” but I think the Congress lives in a “perpetual bubble”. Looking at McCains town hall audience they were ALL white and elderly. Congress only holds town halls during the day when the majority of the people are working so they don’t hear from people who are working and their policies truly affect them. So Congress only hears from the SS crowd and very wealthy crowd who fund their campaigns.

NC has a Koch brothers wannabe, Art Pope, whom the governor appointed as state budget director without pay. The governor is a puppet of Pope. The governor appointed a woman last week to head the state’s pre-K program who was forced to resign three days later when emails were found she did not believe in pre-K education. The state is in for big problems, and Senator Kay Hagen (D-NC) could have a tough time being reelected in 2014.

DTE Energy (NYSE: DTE) selected 70 solar energy projects in the first round of its expansion of the SolarCurrents customer-owned pilot program, which offers customers a more affordable way to install solar photovoltaic systems on their homes and businesses.

The SolarCurrents program expansion will offer an additional 2 megawatts of capacity over the next two years. A random drawing was necessitated when DTE Energy customers responded with more than 100 applications, representing more than 700 kilowatts for the first round of 500 kilowatts (kW). The projects that weren’t selected can reapply for the next round, which starts June 24. The application deadline is July 23.

In the first round, incentives were awarded to 61 residential projects, representing 377 kW and ranging in size from 1 to 20 kW. Those projects will be built in 11 counties in Southeastern Michigan.

WASHINGTON — The revelation could have doomed President Obama’s nomination of Chuck Hagel to be secretary of defense: He gave a paid speech to a group called “Friends of Hamas.”

Fortunately for Hagel, this claim, which galloped across the Internet, was bogus. I know, because I was the unwitting source.

In the process, I became part of an inadvertent demonstration of how quickly partisan agendas and the Internet can transform an obvious joke into a Washington talking point used by senators and presidential wannabes.

Here’s what happened: When rumors swirled that Hagel received speaking fees from controversial organizations, I attempted to check them out.

On Feb. 6, I called a Republican aide on Capitol Hill with a question: Did Hagel’s Senate critics know of controversial groups that he had addressed?

Hagel was in hot water for alleged hostility to Israel. So, I asked my source, had Hagel given a speech to, say, the “Junior League of Hezbollah, in France”? And: What about “Friends of Hamas”?

The names were so over-the-top, so linked to terrorism in the Middle East, that it was clear I was talking hypothetically and hyperbolically. No one could take seriously the idea that organizations with those names existed — let alone that a former senator would speak to them.

I haz a sad. Ed Henry has blocked me. So I tweeted that Chuck Todd has thicker skin than Ed and Jake Tapper. Since Ed is president of white house press corp, I added them to the tweet.

Its true you know. I have been kinder to Jake and Ed, yet Chuck is the one that keeps most of his harshest critics around. Sad. LOL.

Welcome to the club. Ed Henry blocked me over a year ago, and I believe he recently blocked a ton of folks (many of whom are TODers). Jake Tapper blocked me soon after I joined Twitter. Chuck Todd and Mark Knoller don’t really block.

Ed was taken down 6 pegs by Jay Carney yesterday when he was spouting GOP talking points – “You were here – you know that is not true Ed” . He probably blocked Carney as well.

President Obama receiving unprecedented accolades when he visits Israel. So cool.

Do you remember when the Obamas first visited England they were hughely welcomed by 2 unprecedented things?

    1) The President addressed their Parliament in a joint session of the House of Lords and the House of Commons!!! Don’t know if that ever happened before.
    2) Our First family slept in Buckingham Palace in the same room Prince William and Kate used prior to their honeymoon trip. Pretty sure the Bushes and Clintons did not get to sleep in The Palace ever. Let alone in that special room.

The world outside of the MSM/GOPTP respects PBO as we do.

Indeed, Vicki, I don’t know how many people truly comprehend the depth of an invitation to stay INSIDE Buckingham Palace, but it is not small consideration, as nothing is ever done lightly by Queen Elizabeth, certainly not hosting heads of state in her own home! Great magnitude, as a Canadian-American, I was truly delighted when this arrangement was set in place!

Hello Chiparooo! I just saw your comment and I understand your wariness regarding Unite Blue. The members seem to be very genuine but the creators make me give them the side eye. There was a dust up a few weeks back about Unite Blue stealing the whole “Unite The Left On Twitter” idea from another group called Connect The Left., the were questions behind their agenda, there were questions as to the lists of twitter followers they were keeping, the names and email addresses they were keeping, why they require you to follow everyone back immediately etc. Connect The Left began to unite together and ward off conservative tea party nonsense and then out of thin air this “Unite Blue” thing popped up and their background makes me hesitant to join or anything like that. I’ve got my band of awesome twitter warriors here on TOD (you for one) and I’m doing just fine so all I say is watch them cautiously and don’t dip into it if you’ve got your gut sending out a red flag.

          • February 20, 2013 at 12:54 pm

Brilliant stuff UT, thank you, I somehow completely missed that dust-up, didn’t know anything about it. I’ve been curious about them, but it was only when I saw Shoq asking them those questions that I really began to wonder what it’s all about. I don’t know if Green worked for Roemer because he shared his politics, or if it was just for business (probably the latter), but it seems pretty odd that he’s now trying to ‘unite’ mainly PBO supporters, who he worked ‘against’. Presumably, again, it’s all for $$ reasons, as Shoq was implying. I’m steering clear! Thanks again UT.

Yes, they are very excited about talking with the president. They have also requested viewers to submit questions for Kevin Ogle to ask the president. I believe the interview will be on the 10:00 news either tonight or tomorrow night. Last night the other anchor reported that he got the White House tour. That was exciting for him and his producer. I think Kevin will be starstruck, actually. This is all he could talk about for about three days. This NBC affiliate actually does a better job than the national NBC. Our local CBS affiliate is in the tank rightwing.
We’ll be watching this. We usually watch this station at 10:00.
Thanks for bringing this tweet here. I don’t tweet, so hadn’t seen it.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – State and local governments are spending more on highways, roads and bridges now that they have a long-standing funding commitment from the federal government, according to a recent report from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.

The group, the oldest transportation construction-related association in the United States, found that from October 1 through February 15, federal, state and local transportation departments have set aside $7 billion in federal funds for capital works projects, a 56 percent increase from the same period last year.

In January alone, the transportation departments obligated $2.3 billion, 13 percent more than in January 2012, the group said in a special report released last Friday.

“The current obligations levels are much more in line with what we expect to see in the marketplace,” ARTBA Chief Economist Alison Black said in a statement, adding that they had been “quite low” the previous two years.

Transportation departments obligate, or set aside, money for projects about to be bid and constructed, and are an indicator of states’ spending plans.

Does anyone know much about Unite Blue? I see @Shoq was asking @140elect some questions yesterday about their finances, agenda, etc – turns out the guy behind it, Zach Green, ran Buddy Roemer’s ‘Presidential’ – – Twitter campaign, so, presumably, he’s no friend of PBO. All a bit odd because most of the people following him appear to PBO supporters.

interesting Chips, I’ve been getting a lot of new followers- all from UniteBlue- and they do seem to all be pro-Obama. Why would this guy Green be a supporter of Roemer.. and then start Unite Blue, seems kinda fishy.

      • February 20, 2013 at 12:27 pm

I’m curious now as well Sherijr, the followers are completely genuine, lots of the good people on Twitter, it just looks like this is simply a business for the Zach Green guy – I wonder how many of his followers know he didn’t support PBO??

      • February 20, 2013 at 12:30 pm

What are the activities of Unite Blue other than following each other on twitter and using their hashtag? Have there been any events? I just don’t get it.

        • 142 sherijr
          February 20, 2013 at 12:44 pm

not a clue meta.. I only heard of them because of the sudden mass of followers.. but honestly have not checked out Unite Blue at all.

    • February 20, 2013 at 12:29 pm

For some reason, I’ve been wary of this “movement” from the very beginning. Mostly because they “require” you to follow everybody else. When I clicked on Green’s twitter account, I saw that he describes himself as a “twitter consultant.” I just think he’s doing marketing rather than true political organizing. JMO.

      • February 20, 2013 at 12:32 pm

Sounds like a business rather than a political movement alright Meta.

        February 20, 2013 at 12:44 pm

This seems fishy to me. First the name is too similar to ActBlue which is a Democratic fundraising activist organization. The name can be a deliberate attempt to confuse folks. Also, the ‘Pubs are making a concerted effort to get a younger following through social media. I know Roemer was iced out of his own party during the last election, but this gives me pause. He may be playing both sides against the middle. So if he/they put out enough seemingly progressive/Dem messages via social media, and get folks who really are progressive to follow and share, then as long as the messages aren’t blatant rwnjish, the infiltration for successful resource drain is possible and likely.

        • February 20, 2013 at 12:59 pm

I share your doubts, Cookemom. And when you go to their website, which is purely about promoting their Twitter campaigns, there’s nothing of actual substance there, these are three of the Twitter trends they claim as their own: #Rubio2016 #Benghazi #Drones

Now, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re anti-PBO ‘trends’, people could be pushing back using those hashtags, but… hmm.

          • February 20, 2013 at 4:23 pm

This Zach Green guy is adapting a stragey like Arianna Huffington, Markos Moltos, Cenk to co opt dems. This guy is a wolf in sheep’s clothing he is a Republican trying to attract Progressive. The name “uniteblue” is catchy to us Dems and some will follow blindly. This is similar to PCCC or Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which I thought was part of the DNC because of the way it sounded. I do not trust any republican appearing to lure Democrats.

The Rachel Ray Show was delightful to watch. She and First Lady Michelle Obama have such a wonderful camaraderie. They talked about the bangs, they talked about going to Mississippi to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of Let’s Move and Rachel said she’ll have a show in March to show everyone what she and FLOTUS did in MS, sooo…another heads up for everyone.

They talked about the Oscars, FLOTUS gave us a view of her office and showed everyone a really sweet picture of her, Pres. Obama and the First Daughters at Sasha Obama’s junior middle school (I think) graduation and the huge grin on Pres. Obama’s face showed his pride.

Rachel tries to be “non-partisan” but she is such an Obot. :D She told FLOTUS how incredibly happy she is that FLOTUS will be in the white house for “Four More Years.” Told her she’s so proud of the First Family, and so proud to call Michelle Obama First Lady. She told FLOTUS that she’s gotten to know her these past 3 years due to Let’s Move and she thanks her for her friendship, leadership, and what she’s done for children in this country.

The audience was the best. They cheered their hearts off when FLOTUS came on air and didn’t stop for quite a while.
