A proof that men have better friends:

A woman didn’t come home one night. Next morning she told her husband she had slept over at a friends house. Husband calls her 10 best friends. None of them knew anything about it.

Man didn’t come home one night. Next morning he says he slept over at a friends house. Wife calls his 10 best friends. Eight confirmed that he slept over and two said he was still there.

      Lovely Plains,

You are such a fountain of knowledge.

I knew that Yun Ji Dies’ name rang a bell, but couldn’t place it. You’re just amazing!

For Susanne, if she reads this thread tonight, reposting link to Yun Ji Dies interview of PBO from the end of the last thread.

Back on TOD page 6 (all of two days ago), Susanne posted part 1 video of KITV-HAWAII interview with President Obama.

Here’s part 3 of KITV’s interview where the President talks about pidgin, food and Presidential library; it auto-segues into a brief video of the East Room:
“It took a full presidential term, a re-election, and the work of a determined journalist before President Barack Obama agreed to a one-on-one interview with a television news crew from Hawaii.”

Susanne, if you posted other local news about PBO earlier this week, I missed them. But would welcome any updates from you!

As with many religions, political parties have a tendency to start as a movement, transform into a business, and finally degenerate into a racket designed to fleece the yokels. One organization which has gone out of its way to illustrate this evolution is the Republican Party. And it has done so with a national scope and fundraising apparatus that would have made Jimmy Swaggart or Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker mute with awe.

By “Republican Party” I mean both the formal party and its extended apparat: talk radio and the Fox News empire, pressure groups like the Family Research Council, allegedly “educational” 501(c)3 organizations like the Heritage Foundation, direct mail outfits descended from the original Richard Viguerie mother ship, polling firms like Rasmussen’s, and the Tea Party itself (the latter nevertheless asserts its non-affiliation with the GOP despite its having sponsored the Florida Republican presidential candidates’ debate in 2011)

I read this blog daily but rarely comment mainly because I forgot my password and was too lazy to retrieve it. I have a bone I can’t stop chewing and need a reality check.

MHP and Althea Butler. I can’t stop being really pissed at these two for twisting the President’s words. Butler blocked me on twitter after I politely responed to her recent op-ed on the subject. I have been suspect of MHP since her first show where she let that Republican stomp all over her. My suspcion was furthur raised in the Valerie Jarrett interview when she referenced a word count of how many times the President mentioned poverty (licking her lips and sneering as if she’d sprung a real trap). Butler goes to the word count well in her op ed, a string of annotations that add up to nothing. Do others feel they are misrepresenting the President?

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505266_162-57570450/the-scooter-store-power-wheelchair-company-raided-in-federal-probe/

Late last year, former employees told CBS News the company’s main goal is not to help patients — it’s to bulldoze doctors into writing prescriptions to boost profits. Former SCOOTER Store employee Brian Setzer said, “Bulldoze and get them to get the paperwork done.”

CTM special correspondent Jeff Glor asked, “So people could get those wheelchairs?”

    Setzer replied, “Yes.”

“Even if they didn’t need them,” Glor said.

    Setzer said, “Yeah.”

The issue is that once a doctor has written a prescription, Medicare rarely verifies whether the chairs are actually necessary. The problem was crystallized when the Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services released this report, finding that industry-wide, 80 percent of Medicare payments for power chairs are made in error, most going to people who don’t need them, or who lack proof they need them.

From 2009 to 2012, government auditors found The SCOOTER Store overbilled Medicare by as much as $108 million.

SO when the President says we need to reform Medicare, THIS IS WHAT HE’S TALKING ABOUT!!!

There is always a % who will use ANY government program to make money – regardless as to what the program is meant to do – this is why the oversight is so important – and why the GOP tries so hard to have no oversight.

It is also – according to my physio – a big mistake for people who don’t need such chairs to use them anyway. Not walking, is the quickest way to lose the ability to walk.

Memory Lane, eh? This interview appeared in the November 2004 issue of O magazine.

Oprah: There’s a line in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman [a 1974 TV movie based on Ernest J. Gaines's novel] when Jane is holding a baby and asking, “Will you be the One?” While you were speaking, I was alone in my sitting room cheering and saying, “I think this is the One.”

Barack: That’s so nice. I think I’m one of the ones. I fight against the notion that blacks can have only one leader at a time. We’re caught in that messiah mentality. As a consequence, a competition is set up. Who’s the leader of the Korean-American community or the Irish-American community? The reason we don’t know the answer is that they’ve got a collective leadership—people contributing in business, culture, politics. That’s the model I want to encourage. I want to be part of many voices that help the entire country rise up.

I’m still savoring this interview – yeah, I know it’s almost an hour since I started, but I’m not reading consistently. I read a section then go off and get something to eat, come back, read, then go put the house to bed, etc. etc.

      //…
Barack: Even in conservative Republican counties, 1,200 people would just show up at 9 on a Sunday morning.

Oprah: Did that response solidify your message?

Barack: It confirms the instincts that got me into politics. I believe the American people are decent people. They get confused sometimes because they get bad information or they’re just busy and stressed and not paying attention. But when you sit down and talk with them, you’re struck by how tolerant and loving they are.

Oprah: Most people honestly want to do as well as they can in their lives.

Barack: Exactly. They’ve got their struggles and heartaches, but they’re basically good.

      • February 23, 2013 at 9:15 pm

The thing that makes this argument so ridiculous is the fact that the entire country has witnessed a Republican Party that has rebuffed every idea President Obama has presented, even when they originated with them. Now all of a sudden they decided to accept his idea hook, line and sinker? I don’t think so. But let’s assume for the sake of argument that they did…why? Because they thought it didn’t matter what they agreed to because President Obama was on his way out.

Legislating is delegated to the Congress…budgeting and appropriations are the responsibility of the House, so the question should be why the President was doing their job?

As for the taxes and spending cuts…I don’t remember the spending total, but the revenue was to total $1.2 trillion. Only $600 billion has been accounted for. They’ve made half the cuts and given up half the revenue. They want the rest of their cuts without giving up anymore revenue. That wasn’t the deal.

      PRINCIPLES OF JOURNALISM

      ———————————————

      1. JOURNALISM’S FIRST OBLIGATION IS TO THE TRUTH

Democracy depends on citizens having reliable, accurate facts put in a meaningful context. Journalism does not pursue truth in an absolute or philosophical sense, but it can–and must–pursue it in a practical sense. This “journalistic truth” is a process that begins with the professional discipline of assembling and verifying facts. Then journalists try to convey a fair and reliable account of their meaning, valid for now, subject to further investigation. Journalists should be as transparent as possible about sources and methods so audiences can make their own assessment of the information. Even in a world of expanding voices, accuracy is the foundation upon which everything else is built–context, interpretation, comment, criticism, analysis and debate. The truth, over time, emerges from this forum. As citizens encounter an ever greater flow of data, they have more need–not less–for identifiable sources dedicated to verifying that information and putting it in context.

      2. ITS FIRST LOYALTY IS TO CITIZENS

While news organizations answer to many constituencies, including advertisers and shareholders, the journalists in those organizations must maintain allegiance to citizens and the larger public interest above any other if they are to provide the news without fear or favor. This commitment to citizens first is the basis of a news organization’s credibility, the implied covenant that tells the audience the coverage is not slanted for friends or advertisers. Commitment to citizens also means journalism should present a representative picture of all constituent groups in society. Ignoring certain citizens has the effect of disenfranchising them. The theory underlying the modern news industry has been the belief that credibility builds a broad and loyal audience, and that economic success follows in turn. In that regard, the business people in a news organization also must nurture–not exploit–their allegiance to the audience ahead of other considerations.

There are many situations – worldwide in history where folks have democratically been elected and then changed the rules to ensure they stay in power. Voting or not voting sometimes has unexpected consequences (Was it Michael Moore who told everyone not to vote in 2010?) – fortunately the US democracy is strong enough to fight back from this.

I don’t always agree with Rachel Maddow, but I bless her for continuing to call this out before the whole nation. To have this law passed after we worked so hard to repeal the other one is just the kind of slap in the face that makes your ears ring. Since they attached a money piece to the bill it can’t be repealed. And our Supreme Court is Republican too, no joy there.

Detroit hasn’t yet been assigned an emergency manager. If that happens maybe something can be done. They aren’t actually being denied the right to vote, yet. People under emergency managers can still vote in county, state, and federal elections. I wonder if something could be done after they have had lo local elections for a certain amount of time. It’s just appalling. And I have yet to hear any good news coming out of any community or school district who already has an EFM and you know they would be bellowing to the skies about any successes. You just hear about them cancelling contracts and selling off property. The EFM in Benton Harbor sold property that had been willed to the city for a public park to Whirlpool, a company the EFM had previously had connections with. Hmmm.

‘That’s why I see my book as part of my politics. And I’ll write more books. Policy has to be guided by facts, but to move people you have to tell stories.’ PBO

      Thank you Kathryn!

Boehner’s ‘I got 98% of what I wanted’ left unstated the most critical ‘operator’ in the algorithm – that President Obama would be defeated on 6 Nov 2012. If the dude had evaluated, even casually, the situation in August 2011, he would have realized that that his algorithm was fatally flawed.

Hello Bobfr – I was wondering if the 6 Nov piece was the one being mentioned. Ezra doubled down last night

        http://www.nbcnews.com/id/49263362#50913258

I am slightly wondering as to where are the congressional democrats in this nonsense – have they decided it is too hard to support the President? That they prefer to see argument between the President and Boehner? I find they have a lack of visibilty – am I wrong about this?

        • February 23, 2013 at 10:23 pm

Have no idea about Congressional Dems though Speaker Pelosi and others were hard at work all week, as Rs vacationed, holding hearings (and who knows what else) on how to avert the sequester. I think the level of cooperation and coordination between the President, Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid is likely way greater than they reveal, publicly. They know how evil – truly evil – the people are whom they are confronting and how calamitous this can all become, to the grave harm of the majority of Americans.

As to Ezra – who knows. What matters is that he schooled Woodward big time and in public. As 4mf44 notes – let’s hope he attempts to do the same to his wife – though that’s obviously a little dicey ;)

Well I didn’t know the dems will still working through the positions – so maybe I should “use the google” more – and I am sure you are right about the coordination with PBO – it just seems to me that sometimes the party seems to think he can solve every problem the country will ever face (miracles take longer perhaps).

I think Mrs Ezra eventually lost the “women in admin” argument so she may think before going into print on such issues again – although most gopers double down on stupid all the time – sigh

Of course. He violated the President’s trust. Got his ass handed to him in a ‘zero further access’ policy and everything he’s done since is what you’d expect from a hyper-inflated megalomaniac (redundancy, in this case, warranted).

Thank you so very much. I am in tears. This is so beautiful. I cannot tell you what this means to me.
I am not. I will not. I vow not to give up on our youth.
For some many who have loss their way, confused or caught up in the world……there are some whose lights are shining bright.

I just want to share this: I had a discussion with a group of mothers and young people who are shocked and disgusted how the “Harlem Shake” is being mocked. Yes, mocked. Some of the young people are outright disgusted that their dance is being perpetrated wrong and downright vulgar. I live in Harlem and have not seen what was shown on CNN the other day. It may seem like “fun” and kids just being kids. But this is a culture expression to some of the young kids in Harlem just as the “Electric Slide” is to others.
It seems as if they just want you to do it right or sit down, learn and watch.

To be honest, I was at my niece’s wedding last week and I still could not believe someone was messing up the line!

A federal district court in Arizona made it official this week and entered a permanent injunction that blocks a law designed to strip Planned Parenthood clinics in the state of funds by banning Medicaid funding for non-abortion health care provided by doctors and clinics that also perform abortions. Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Cecile Richards praised the victory in a statement: “Yet another court has said it is unacceptable for politicians to dictate where women can go for their health care, returning to women the ability to choose the health centers they trust for lifesaving cancer screenings, breast health exams, and birth control. Politicians in Arizona and across the country should recognize that they have no business inserting themselves in a woman’s personal health care decisions.”

“This case has never been about Planned Parenthood—it is about the women who rely on Planned Parenthood health centers for quality, affordable preventive care. Eliminating Planned Parenthood as an option among providers only hurts women and families,” she added.

the saga of rubio’s thirst continues. he just launched a big fundraiser using the ‘joke’ of his gulping water during his speech, selling poland spring water to supporters. but now, it’s being recalled:

‘ Some Poland Spring water bottles may be contaminated by gasoline, the New Hampshire Department of Health warned in a consumer advisory published this week.
    ~
Citing information provided by state health officials, Patch.com reports that “exposure levels are unlikely to result in long-term health effects.” However, MetroWest Daily News reported earlier this week that at least one person has had to seek medical attention after drinking from a gasoline-tainted bottle of Poland Spring water. An unnamed Essex County child was reportedly treated at an emergency department after drinking water from a 5-gallon bottle. ‘

see, republicans like rubio are correct. we shouldn’t have any “departments of health” telling businesses what to do. eventually, the “free market” consumers would’ve discovered this on their own and then decide to drink a different brand, that is unless it went on for decades, and poland spring got to be so big there’s no other company to chose from, and they would dominate the airwaves with p.r. campaigns downplaying it, and their hand-picked politicians would make sure to say, everything’s okay, don’t worry about it…” and most of the kids in the area grew up with developmental problems and birth defects, but EVENTUALLY, the consumers would figure out what’s best for themselves all on their own. damn, government always getting in the way!

According to emergency officials, the incident happened at 12:11 a.m. at 2920 Ala Ilima. Authorities said the boy was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Unlike many who have been infected with the media manufactured Hillary Clinton fever for 2016, VP Joe Biden is my #1 choice for 2016. I am convinced that, if elected, he will carry out, and build on, President Obama’s agenda.

I doubt that he wants to go there nathkatun – which doesn’t mean that he couldn’t do the job. He does not upstage nor try to lead PBO, but he has the elder statesman ability to loudly endorse the President’s program & prove, through his experience how right(as in correct) is PBO and how wrong is the GOP as typified by lyin’ Ryan.

          February 24, 2013 at 2:15 am

You may be right, 99ts, that VP Biden is not interested in running for President in 2016. So far, I see no evidence that he does not intend to run. In any case, all I am saying is that should he chose to run he will be my number one choice. In other words, if the choice is between Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, I will, without any hesitation, chose Joe Biden. I implicitly trust and respect Joe Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden. By the way, if the party wants new faces I would prefer either MA governor Duvall Patrick or MD governor Martin O’Malley. Obviously, if Hillary Clinton becomes the nominee of the Democratic Party in 2016, I will support her.

Absolutely, 99ts! Although VP Biden is my #1 choice, If he is not the Democratic Party’s nominee, I will actively support whoever is the Democratic Party’s nominee. As Bobfr said, if we love and value this country, we cannot allow any of these insane Republicans in the White House.

      • February 24, 2013 at 1:40 am

        Agree, nath.

And, the honorable former SOS Clinton has been clear for now more than a year she has no intention of re-entering politics.

If VP Biden decides he wants to run for President it is impossible to imagine that President Obama won’t support him and bring his OFA into alignment with the objective of VP Biden winning.

All that being highly probable, it is way to early to know what President Obama, VP Biden and others in that remarkably powerful and coordinated inner circle are planning.

They have many, many options given the rich cohort of potential candidates among whom they could decide to propel. One aspect I am 100% confident. Whomever President Obama and VP Biden decide to support in 2016, that candidate will have an unprecedented engine driving their campaign.

Both the President and VP no we can not allow anything like the current GOP to enter the White House. It would be the end of the American promise.

Absolutely, Bob! I pledge to give all I can to prevent the GOP from regaining the Presidency in 2016. By the way, we can accomplish that without Hillary Clinton. I think MD Gov. Patrick O’Malley, who has been unwavering in supporting President Obama’s policies, would be an excellent choice. I also like MA Gov. Duvall Patrick, though I understand that he is not interested in running for public office after his term expires. If Sen. Elizabeth Warren becomes the nominee of the Democratic Party I will enthusiastically support her. My number one choice, however is still Vice President Biden. When the time comes I will spell out, in details, why I prefer Joe Biden over other possible Democratic candidates. But you are absolutely right that right now our focus must be on the 2014 election. We must win back the House of Representatives as well as keep the Senate under Democratic control. Once we do that, we can then turn our attention to the 2016 election.

I googled your question – and it seems one can be a VP forever – as long as you do not become President.
