Only giving white people the right to vote, and forcing black people to give up their seats at the front of the bus for white people, reeks of white entitlement. Fuck Justice Scalia! Racists sure are good at projecting.
When the U.S. Supreme Court does strike down key parts of the Voting Rights Act, we can thank assholes, like Rachel Maddow, and the rest of the Far-Left for telling people not to vote. When key groups decide not to vote, the state legislatures get overrun by far-right assholes, and the states start passing laws to take away the rights of certain voters/groups.
I think it was Ed Schultz from the MSNBC crowd, not Rachel, but we cannot allow a repeat of that attitude for 2014. Please join OFA and help us press the President’s agenda!
Rachel was pretty awful about All Things PBO before 2010. ACA wasn’t good enough for her, repeal of DADT wasn’t fast enough or good enough for her. She was pretty awful. A lot of the looney left contributed to 2010. There wasn’t a speech the President gave that Rachel/Ed/Keith didn’t blast because it wasn’t what they wanted to hear exactly the way they wanted to hear it, from their safe little berths. I dream of a ‘progressive’ media that actually understood what a major breakthrough ACA was. Imagine if they had supported it the way original Medicare and SS were supported when first enacted. 2010 would have been a different election, we would have kept the House, and neutered some of McConnell’s antics.
She has moderated somewhat. And some of worst offenders, like Norman Goldman (and even Ed to a certain extent) have moderated considerably. I actually listen to Norman Goldman on the drive home, and he was insufferable before 2010.

Okay, that’s how I started my day of catching up with the news. Listening to my President now, talking about Rosa Parks (luckily, I was smart enough to set my recording last night – late bloomer over here!), and seeing the beautiful images you posted here, Chips, well – what a great start of a day.
Also caught the image of my man Chuck Hagel (and, more importantly, President Obama’s man) being sworn in, and a few of the words CNN dared to show (also on my recording) of his humble speech before HIS Department of Defense, which I’ll finish watching another time since CNN went over to listen to gossip instead.
I am choosing only to concentrate on the good things today, for as long as I can ’cause I don’t like missing too much, and, of course, the memory of this one courageous woman of color who knew she was equal and wanted to point that out to the rest of the country looking in through the window of a bus. Even “bus” comes from the Latin root word “Omnibus,” which means “for all,” the meaning of which she reminded us by her quiet moves through our lives not that long ago. God bless President Obama as he moves so gracefully through our lives, too, for four more years and beyond.

Beautiful, dignified statue. My mother was a seamstress, and although there is no real connection, it still touches me even more deeply when he says “This morning we celebrate a seamstress”. A traditional female job, often the support of their families, and so much more. They were both strong women.

SCOTUS should honor Rosa Parks and all other civil rights icons by strengthening the interpretation of the Voting Rights Act, not weakening it. We need it just as much today!

Isn’t it interesting, Judith, that the male Supreme court Justices who live in privilege are doing everything in their power to overturn the changes that the seamstress Rosa Parks set in motion. The significance of the dedication of Rosa Parks’ statue will not be lost on sane members of the SC. Remember a year ago when EVERYBODY declared the Health Care dead because of oral arguments and questions, and the “awful” case of the government. I just read the “You’re wrong again” segment in tne New York magazine quoting the pundits who predicted Hagel’s nomination would fail. Well, I believe these pundits predicting the failure of the VRA will also be wrong. As I’ve said before, Sonia Sotomayor is SMART, and persuasive.
You can all beat on meafter the decision if I’m wrong, but my confidence is strong.
I’m learning that these oral arguments and questions do not predict decisions.
Nobody’s gonna beat up on you, in either case, but I’m glad your confidence on this is strong. Here’s hoping.

Today the GOP Supreme Court permanently tied the GOP to a white supremacist legacy and a diminishing role in a multicultural America. Next time a GOP politician talks about “outreach” to AA and Latino voters, the Scalia quote that voting rights are a “racial entitlement” will be remembered. A Supreme Court that diminishes human beings in this fashion, that proclaims that corporations are persons and money is speech must disappear forever.
I wonder if a comparable comment has ever been made from the Supreme Court bench?
It’s breathtaking. Voting as ‘racial entitlement’. And the first part of the sentence: That Congress can’t be trusted with the issue because, you know, they might be affected by actual people.
It was despicable. In a different world, a different America, there would be talk of impeachment.

Dear Chips and family, I am supposed to be studying, have tons of reading to do. But I just want to thank you some much from the bottom of my heart for all the beautiful pics and videos. I am in tears as I write this but so much joy inside. As I posted late last night, these four years will be forever engraved in our hearts, minds and souls.
I can’t wait to start a Journal to leave for those in my family who are not paying attention. History is being made and we are helping to shape, mold and share in it. I wake up excited every day. Regardless of what the other is doing or not doing, I wake up with purpose and excited.
We cannot take all of this for granted. We are supposed to be here to savor and share this to those who dare to seek the truth.

So OT, but so cute: we put a cone on Kasper, our bichon/maltese mix, so he wouldn’t aggravate the hot spot on his tail. Kasper is totally white. He sniffs at everything, and when my husband took him outside, he scooped up an entire cone-full of snow. All my husband saw was a cone-full of snow and two big, black eyes.

I must admit I went to http://www.navy.mil/ looking for more on the (cute) new SECDEF, but found this about Navy Capt. Pete Tzomes, and thought I’d post:
“The story of how one of the Navy’s Centennial Seven became the first African-American commanding officer of a nuclear powered submarine.”
It’s a powerful history of how one successful African-American Naval officer found conditions in his Navy, early on, and here’s a snippet – in his own words – of why he made it:
“When Dr. King got shot, there was some sort of news release, and we all heard about Dr. King getting shot. And one of my classmates who rowed crew at the academy … very muscular, in very good shape, over six-feet tall, came up to me and says to me, ‘Tomzy, what are your people going to do now your big leader’s dead?’ Just like that.
“And I told him, ‘I know you’re bigger than I am, but I’ll tell you, I’ll get one last kick in your crotch area and you’ll never forget it. Get away from me!’ And he did. But [he was] only one person. There were about 20 of us in our class, and he was the only person like that. That’s typical of my experiences back in those days.”

Beautiful! (I love President Obama.) And I feel the exact same way about all the “firsts” for women.
On the one hand, naming “the first this-or-that” sounds good, like we’ve made progress. On the other hand, it’s demeaning, like leaving a bad taste in your mouth (not that Rear Adm. Groomes meant it that way – he was stressing more a lack of progress). The fact we are still counting firsts in every ethnic group, for LGBTs, for women – shockingly slow, this “progress” thingie, here in America in the 21st Century. And the previous several centuries.
Which is why Scalia’s remarks are a joke (I’ll be polite; I’m thinking worse than that), as are the remarks of so many others.
Which is why so many people said that Pres. Obama’s election means we’re “post-racial.” As if.
Pres. Obama gets it.
I particularly appreciated the part of his response where PBO makes the point about ‘collective leadership’ with contributions coming from all/different sectors. I suspect, from what I’ve read about the campaigns, that PBO’s administration has done quite a bit to lay a groundwork for more ‘collective leadership’ going forward. I say this as I think of all the young people who were in positions of leadership in his campaign and who have been branching out and moving on.
In other words, Obama Nation! We can only hope!
Yes, I see quite a few bright young people making big impacts now and in the future, thanks to his own particular style of leadership (the likes of which we don’t see too often, in any sector).

Beneath Boehner’s blame game is the fact that he can’t pass anything. This is why he is trying push the blame on to the Senate and the White House. House Republicans aren’t trying to avoid the sequester. They are trying to pass the buck. The reality is that the president can’t do anything until after Congress passes the legislation.
Since this is a budgetary matter, the House will have to pass a sequester replacement bill. John Boehner has redefined the meaning of the term do nothing speaker. The 112 Congress was the most unproductive since 1947-1948. The gridlock was caused by House Republicans who refused to compromise.
The speaker is still refusing to compromise, but he is also not doing his job. The House must pass a new sequester replacement. What the House did in the old congress does not carry over. The House hasn’t even voted for a sequester replacement in the new Congress. In reality, it is John Boehner who is content to sit on his ass and try to win the blame game while Rome burns.

I don’t think that that will be the outcome. If anything, Scalia’s toxic white supremacist comment might well result in a 6-3 decision against the plaintiff’s efforts to strike Section 5.
I hope you are right. I have read that Roberts has been zeroing in on repeal of the VRA from the beginning. Certainly the explicitly political and racist statement of Scalia didn’t help the RW cause. It was too transparent and politically directed to incite.
Scotusblog had to say that Kennedy might be the 5 v 4 to keep Sec 5 in of the VRA. I hope they are right.
Wondering when it will be time for someone to ask Scalia to undergo some mental instability diagnosis. He’s getting crazier by the year.

“So, we have important work to do, the American people want us to work together, we want something big, bold, balanced and bipartisan that can take us – Republicans say: ‘they’re kicking the can down the road,’ it’s not kick – I don’t think they’re even kicking the can down the road, I think they are nudging the potato across the table with their nose. There’s not much that is being accomplished by what they are doing. This is just completely irresponsible, it’s mindless, most people don’t even know what the word sequester means; sequestration equals unemployment. Sequestration – we don’t want it, and we can work here to make sure we get the job done.

By Justice Broccoli’s standard, women, minorities and homosexuals could be denied all the rights the Constitution supposedly assures.
What a constitutional scholar. The Constitution, as far as I recall, does not mention any rights being endowed by a creator.
Japa21, the man is just horrid. I read his opinions and absolutely cringe. It is clear to me he is a racist, homophobe and thinks little of women. When he gave an opinion about racial profiling and immigration, he said it was justified because during slavery, Blacks had to always show their papers.

Today I called my Republican Congressional rep’s office and offered his staff specific examples of how the sequestration was going to hurt the congressman’s district. I told him that people in the area were not in the mood to be sent into another recession. Said that the people here were NOT tea party R’s and wanted common sense solutions from Congress, not ideological wars. I made the call, not because I think that this guy cares what I think, but to help rack up the numbers of people calling in to complain about the sequester. I urge everyone to take just two minutes to look up the state by state impact of the sequester and then call your congressperson. Right now the Republicans think that people aren’t paying attention and don’t care. Show them that’s not true.

The reason the President dropped a couple of points to 50%, is because his approval amongst AA community is down to 79%.
this cutting spending talk is effecting that community, it’s not right.

It is terrifying that the VRA is threatened. This law needs to be extended to the entire country, not canceled. Voting rights extended and protected, not endangered. How can this be happening???

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg thinks everything in his city will be fine after sequestration and that the administration’s efforts to scare people about the cuts have gone too far.
“I think in all fairness on Monday we’ll be able to police the streets,” he said outside the White House on Wednesday, after meeting with Vice President Joe Biden to talk about gun safety measures. “It’s something that takes a while to implement.”
“There’s a lot of posturing — ‘I’m going to lay off my employees today unless you do something. We’re going to close the hospitals down. We’re going to take all the prisoners from jail and put them on the street. Spare me. I live in that world. I mean come on, let’s get serious here,” he said. “It’s not good for the country — we need to have the White House, the Republicans and Democrats in Congress come together and intelligently find ways to reduce the deficit, but not with a meat axe.”

.if it seems to that it is personal…i tell you…It is personal….my mother who raised me as a single mom could not vote till she as 39…she was able to vote because of the Voting Rights act…my daughter may have to get a different kind of ID that was not required before in order to vote…in regard to Justice Scalia’s comments about the Voting Rights Act being an example of racial entitlement…it is not an entitlement to vote….I AM A CITIZEN and just like other citizens i have the right to vote…..
