Congrats taiping1 and Proud Former White House Intern. We share the top spot in our little Menage A Tois
Good morning Chipsticks & TOD family. Lovely sunrise this morning.
Another example of our “librul press”: The New York Times has an Op-Ed today by Morning Joe Scarborough calling the discussion over the cuts from the sequester a “soap opera”. He has never been correct about anything but the liberal NYT finds it meaningful to present his views into the Saturday morning discussion.

Good Morning Chipsticks, TODer’s, Everyone.
“We do not believe … freedom is reserved for the lucky, or happiness for the few.” ___from President Obama’s 2013 Inauguration Speech.
Although there have been some dark spots this past week, continue to hold on to your hope, faith and belief that common sense and the good in people will overcome the stupidity and selfishness that have put us in this position. Things will work out.
Hello all – congrats cookemom. I thought I would bring over post at the end of last thread by FayPax – cause I wanted to reply to it
- I don’t think you are paranoid or crazy – they have been trying to defeat the President since his first inauguration – but they have not succeeded – so I’m trying to be more positive – just a little more every day

Good morning, everyone. I’ve been inspired and angered by your commentary about the sequestration. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that I have a different take on sequestration. I think it’s just one piece in a bigger puzzle, or perhaps I should say plot. While I hate to promote my own site, my views are too lengthy to write here. Of course, I could just be paranoid and crazy so, I’d really like to know what you think.
that was an excellent and poetic rant. tweeted. good read!
Thanks 99ts, I’m with you, but I think we need to see the big picture and not get lost in all the distractions they throw our way. They have a master plan and we need to make certain we are vigilant about bringing it to an END.
a4alice, I think they are so serious and committed…we must be as well.
Excellent and sobering as well. We definitely need to be vigilant.
have just read your and posted my response in the previous thread.
summary of my thoughts:
- you are correct about the goals of the establishment that hates PBO and ordinary people (“those people”) so much.
- PBO knows what he is against but he also knows that ordinary people are the ones who can help him stop this madness.
- PBO, more than any politician I have known, believes so deeply in the core decency of ordinary people and he wants us to realize that power rest in us.
– through their vote last november, a significant number demonstrated that they understand what PBO is against and they trust him. they are not as loud as the haters who own the media channels
- we just need to keep on fighting
Well said, on all points.
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Thank you for bringing that over. 99 MUST READ!
Thanks Desertflower. I just want to make sure people are connecting the dots.
Wow! FayPax I had no idea you were the pragmatic pundit. I read you all the time (when I have the time). Good stuff and you are right on point (again) with this article.
FayPax, I’ve added your site to my favorites list and will be reading you regularly. What you say is real and chilling. You are neither paranoid nor crazy.
I think it was in Texas a week or two ago, a state official introduced a bill to end women voting. I wish I’d paid more attention to the bit so I could post or quote it accurately.
I can’t even believe this happened. A bill to end women voting? In 2013?! These people are insane.
Oh, do let them show the world how truly stupid they are.
Do you have a link? I cannot find this info anywhere on Google.
Bringing over my response from this morning…..
I can feel your piece……
I do agree that it is part of a larger puzzle but the puzzle is not new…we have been fighting that plot for years…and we have had victories as well…we have to look at the whole picture….
one thing that we have to remember is that the struggle for Freedom and Democracy is ongoing….it requires diligience…perseverance…. courage and a plan…
Altho this sequester has been foisted on us…i know that PBO has a plan to move the country Forward…but he will need our help…we cannot become demoralized….
YES WE CAN!!
GM TOD. Congrats Cooke!
Watching Up with Chris Hayes on the food industry. Didn’t know that in 1991, Herman Cain, yeah that guy, struck a deal with Congress that as head of the Restaurant Industry Assoc, he would not object to raises in minimum wages for non-tipped workers, if they would agree to NEVER increase the minimum wage for tipped employees more than $2.13. That’s NEVER!. So as minimum wage has been raised for everyone else, though not enough. Imagine making $2.13 an hour, and dependent solely on tips. Plus, it is up to the individual owner how tips are distributed.
Tips have become their wages, not the incentive to provide better service.
That’s 22 years with no change in wages for the folks who bring you your food. They have no health benefits, or union representation. If they are sick, they still come to work, because they can’t afford to take a day off. This is horrible.
I knew I didn’t like that Herman Cain guy, but I didn’t know that he is even worse than I thought.
I remember that coming up during the campaign. But you know it was a blip on the media horizon.
Just one more example of how the media hasn’t served the American people like they’re supposed to. There is no point in their existence when information like this comes out after the fact, during an economic slump! The only thing they were interested in was being entertained by Herman Cain’s stunts (even acknowledging him as a front runner at one point!), and they completely ignored the fact that the position he was running for was President of the United States – with power to affect our every day lives.
I don’t remember hearing that before either. WOW! The woman pointed out that, as a result of that, some workers makes less than $3.00 an hour.
Congress is on vacation instead of fixing stuff like this.
Good AM, regarding Tips. Its such a hard problem. I owned a Restaurant for 14 years. In that time mim wage here in WA went from 4.90 to 7+ per hour. The WA Rest Assoc, tried to find a middle ground regarding tips. I know that my Chef, and all other hourly workers made far less then the front of the house. They Averaged 25 to 30 per hour. At least, I demanded that they pay tax on these tips, and asked if they felt the “back of the house” have provided good food, and assisted them they thank them with a small tip. Today, here in WA mim wage is 9.00+ either highest minimum wage or close to top, and a person working dinner service will make between 100 and 150 p/n in tips. I never considered that a Server should make less then minimum wage, but, it sure makes it hard for the salaried worker to here front of the house bragging abt what they make in an evening. FYI closed the Restaurant end of 04 and have NEVER looked back. Did play ex chef for a winery for a couple years made 14.00 p/h and owner kept the tips for her self. Interesting business. Sorry for boring story, but, Restaurant Business is a unknown to many who don’t own or work in one. #Forward

Your work is excellent and now that I know who you are, just wow! Very righteous piece today.
FayPax: Just read your rant. You are breath of fresh air and just what I needed to get me started this morning. It is all making sense and getting much clearer. Keep ranting and raving if you have to. We know who the enemy is and it is UGLY!
It has been around far too long…….divide and conquer is putting it mildly. Kill, steal, destroy is more like it.
Thank you for your righteous rant!
Got my popcorn last night! I am going to just sit back and enjoy watching my President play this game of divide and conquer!
So the notification of replies thingy is still not working? Oh well, I guess, I’ll just have to check in more often.
One of my devotions this morning included the story of Moses leading the Israelites from Egypt. Moses believed in the deliverance of God and exhorted the people to take courage, be silent, do nothing and see the salvation of God. BUT, God told Moses to stop talking and go FORWARD; and when they went forward in faith, the Lord delivered them. That’s how how I see this whole situation, so we, along with PO, MUST go FORWARD in faith and not become paralyzed by fear and insecurity.
Thank you, that is excellent.
For me, Think Progress is one of the best news reporting agencies out there. Were it not for them, I don’t think we’d learn the truth about much of what is happening in politics.

2. CCleaner – free (run every hour automatically)
3. Spybot Search & Destroy – free (run twice a week)
4. Spyware Blaster – free (run twice a week)
5. MRU-Blaster – free (run every hour)
6. Super Anti Spyware – free (run full scan twice a week)
You can’t run mcafee and mse at the same time. You need to get rid of mcafee first before you even install MSE.

Thank you so much, amk. I’ll let him know, and do this for all the house computers…many thanks:)
Do you use all of them?
Yes, Roberta. In the frequency I mentioned.
This entire situation should remind us what this President have to deal with and us up if we are sick and tired of it, this should fire us up to do whatever we can for victory in 2014.
Punish POTUS as the cartoon atop says is frighteningly real.
Last night my team the NY Knicks played in DC and I thought to myself maybe POTUS and VPOTUS even FLOTUS might be there.
Can you imagine the uproar if PBO made time for a basketball game while the sequester is on us?
I do not know what PBO and his Team are going to do in response to this gop action to destroy ppl – but I know he has been thing about the path fpward.
now would be a good time to bring up two clips of videos:
- FLOTUS (as the 2012 DNC Convention): where she says something like ” when all of us are sweating it … when this policy has not gone as planned, PBO reminds me that we are playing a long game here ….”
- PBO’s famous interview with the NH paper editors where he says something like : ” I am usually very calm … but I am best at counter-punching …..when I get the sense that you are trying to take advantage of me then I will crush you”
This says it all.
With the gerrymandering that went on in 2010 within Republican strongholds, how does the math add up in terms of realistically taking back the House in 2014? I’ve heard various opinions on this, from it’s possible, to unlikely within the next 2 voting cycles. Anyone know the odds of this happening?
I do not know that anyone knows for sure. My suspcion is that it hard but not impossible to do and we have to do it.
I think one way to proceed is to find ways/issues to convince a significant number of self-proclaimed republicans that the gop is not working in their best intrests.
hard as it is, we have to try. remember that many never gave PBO a chance but see where we are.
Yes, you’re right. Hopefully, OFA will be instrumental in rallying the troops toward that end.
i think we have to build coalitions with the electorate of those gerrymandered districts based on common issues…i think that is possible here in PA…issues such as Health Care…because our Gov has refused to create the health exchanges…and the Medicaid expansions…there is already grumbling coming from the hospitals urging Corbett to change that…
also around Education …as Corbett threatens to cut the education budget even more….
also with seniors and union and state workers as he threatens to privatize everything from the Lottery to liquor stores…
as PBO says…we are more united than our politics suggest…..
It won’t be easy, but if we register our kind of voters and get them to the polls, it’s possible. Here are some thoughts from Sam Wang, the brilliant guy at Princeton who nailed the last election even better than Nate Silver:
thanks Judith, very interesting read.

Good Saturday Morning TOD!
Well the one good thing is that we woke up today and in the midst of this mess PBO is on the job! I must say that it amazes me more and more each day not so much as to these manufactured crises that the Repubs feel we need to go thru month after month but how the media holds their hands and carries their water for them each time we do. During these press conferences the Republicans might as well be sitting right there in those seats asking the questions because that’s the kind of stuff PBO gets from our illustrious 4th estate. They are simply Republican stenographers carrying their talking points to the WH. SMDH!!!
The public gets NO, ZERO, NADA, NOTHING from the press on the fact that this stuff doesn’t have to happen. It’s just constant cheerleading from them that ooh we got us another crisis to cover….
It just all makes me sick to my stomach.
Linda at WIW I will make calls whenever I can next week. I’m pretty busy at work right now (it being tax season and all) but I’ll make time to make calls. I live outside of DC so my districts are solid blue but I can pound the Republican Leadership. BTW Harry Reid, how’s that filibuster agreement working out for ya????? Sorry, but that was a missed opportunity. God Forbid if the Repubs ever take over the Senate they are going to change those rules to favor the majority in a nanosecond and not give two hoots as to what will happen when they are NOT in power.
Growing up here we used to call DC Federal City because practically everyone back in the day worked for the Federal Government. I have tons of family and friends who still work there. Each time this stuff happens it affects them personally.
The Republican Congress stays on perpetual vacation and that’s quite alright with the press. They are trying to drown the Federal government and that’s quite alright with the press. They have no sense of empathy for the least of these and that’s quite alright with the press. It’s up to “Daddy” to fix Washington. He’s suppose to force them into a room and give them no sunlight or food or water until they “break”. Then they can talk about how he is acting as King and forced them into policy just like the dictatorships of old.
This man has an impossible situation in dealing with this Republican House of Representatives. No money in the world could pay me to deal with this crap. Thank God for President Obama who has the leadership qualities and the the patience to wait these fools out.
I just pray that the uniformed public has the patience to understand what he is up against because PBO and the Dems are the only ones that have their interest at heart.
I guess we could talk (and complain) about this stuff until we are blue in the face but only action will make a difference. So I hope everyone will join Linda in her request to make calls and pressure Congress to get to work for the American people.
Sorry this is so long but I haven’t been able to voice my opinion as much here for a while.
Have a great productive O’Day!!!
Another righteous rant today! There is so much going on behind the scenes in terms of unwritten and unspoken, wink and nod agreements between, lobbyist on K street, media moguls, ‘Pubs, and old white men. For them, PBO’s first election was an anomaly, an experiment, a way to quiet minorities and to be able to say ‘see no more discrimination’. They rallied intensely for the 2010 mid-terms, because they knew they absolutely needed to get the House in order to tie PBO up. They recruited, financed, and backed poor whites in the age old tactic of divide and conquer among the poor, base on race.
As bad as his first election was, PBO’s re-election was epileptic and put them into overdrive. You better believe there was a meeting held similar to the one held on PBO’s inauguration night. This time, they were sure to keep it under wraps and they remain very careful in not making stupid statements like McDoodleneck made about a ‘one term’ president. Still they are conniving to make sure that there will likely never be another AA in the White House. They are banking on the move back to the days of States Rights, code words for legally blatant discrimination.
I sincerely hope that the nation of good folks are paying attention and have been awaken since the 2010 elections. I hope that we can stay focused and keep moving forward, regardless of the media and the games that are being played on our psyches.
Awesome Donna. I’m with ya. Linda must be having a call to action. I’d love to help. I’ll snoop around and see if I can find it.
Poison Pill Politics
By CHARLES M. BLOW
The deadline has passed. The sequester is in effect. And Congress is not in session.
We now know that our political system is broken beyond anything even remotely resembling a functional government.
The ridiculous bill was designed as a poison pill, but Republicans popped it like a Pez. Now the body politic — weak with battle fatigue, jerked from crisis to crisis and struggling to recover from a recession — has to wait to see how severe the damage will be.
The president said Friday that “there is a caucus of common sense up on Capitol Hill” that includes Congressional Republicans who “privately at least” were willing to close loopholes to prevent the sequester.
Those privately reasonable Republicans might want to be more public before their party goes over another cliff and takes the country with them.
Times have changed!!!
Poll: Californians Now Support Gay Marriage by 2:1 Margin
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A record 61 percent of Californians now approve of allowing same-sex couples to marry, according to a poll released Thursday. 32 percent of Californians oppose.
The Field Poll found 78 percent support among people 39 and younger and a solid majority of middle-aged residents now back gay marriage — 56 percent. Even among senior citizens there is 48 percent support, compared with 42 percent against.
The overall results represent a reversal in views about the issue in the 36 years the Field Poll has been taking surveys on gay marriage. In 1977, when the first survey was conducted, only 28 percent approved of gay marriage, while 59 percent were opposed.
The most recent survey found broad-based support, with the majority of most subgroups within the survey — men and women, all racial and ethnic groups, and each major region of the state — saying they favor gay marriage.

Al Qaeda Disbands; Says Job of Destroying U.S. Economy Now in Congress’s Hands newyorker.com/online/blogs/b… via @NewYorker— (@amk4obama) March 02, 2013
The international terror group known as Al Qaeda announced its dissolution today, saying that “our mission of destroying the American economy is now in the capable hands of the U.S. Congress.”
In an official statement published on the group’s website, the current leader of Al Qaeda said that Congress’s conduct during the so-called “fiscal-cliff” showdown convinced the terrorists that they had been outdone.
“We’ve been working overtime trying to come up with ways to terrorize the American people and wreck their economy,” said the statement from Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. “But even we couldn’t come up with something like this.”
So now will Boner and his grubs take credit for disbanding alqaeda as well? Real heroes, ain’t they?

Right on, mhp, if only you had any credibility left.
I did not agree with her attacks on PBO regarding the “daddy” issues…but she is spot on this issue…..re: the Voting Rights Act….
She is not the enemy…i will not throw out the baby with the bathwater….when she is wrong in my opinion i will say so…but when she is right..i will support it…
NO one is pure……and altho there are times when i disagree with her…she is still an important voice…..
I know, of, and for the most part I agree. I gave up on her, used to be fairly riveted when she was featured on Bill Moyer’s Journal, but we are talking a long time ago. I don’t watch any of them anymore, seldom turn on the telly. I read a lot, and thanks to TOD and the webz, feel as if I am well-informed. My opinion of my own opinion has gone up tremendously, thanks to the yapping and yammering of ‘pundits’ and ‘journalists’ during both campaigns. I can’t help but wish more people could think for themselves. That’s why I find it refreshing here on this blog.
That’s pf, not *of…Duh.
i know…i have the fingerits on occasion…smilin
I do not know how many of you are like me but I am one of those people who signed up on the people-generarated petition for Then-Senator-Obama to run for POTUS before he had even declared his candidacy in Springfield.
Of the many reasons I did this was because I had heard him first being interviewed by … wait for it … Tavis Smiley on his then nationally distributed NPR radio show at the time of the IL primary race as many competed to be win that primary and be the Dem Candidate.
Tavis (PBO’s suppoert then) was asking PBO why he thought he could win the primary although many in the AA were against him.
Based on the answers PBO gave then, I admired the fact that as a young man (and before the cameras were on him) he had chosen to serve among the marginalized/poor.
I also recall that PBO acknowledged that his life has always been one where the odds were not always in his favor.
The 2004 DNC speech just re-affirmed my hopes for him – PBO was going places (and that was before I saw the clip of his opposition to the Iraq War).
Reason I am bringing this up is because I suspect that from the very start, PBO has known that there are strong forces aligned against him and anyone who supports his efforts to change the status quo.
At the core, PBO believes that ordinary people are decent people and will do the right thing when called upon to do so.
I also believe that PBO thinks that his major role is to make ordinary people realize the power they have to change the horrible circumstances they face through participation in the democratic process and demanding policies that maximizes each one’s potential and do not leave the weak behind.
Yes, taking back the house from the gop is not going to be easy because they have rigged the system. However, we have to do all we can to make it happen.
we have to convince a proportion of ordinary republicans that it is in their best interest to get rid of their current representatives.
It may be strange to some but months ago, I suggested in a comment here, that one focus for 2014 should be using the gop’s refusal to implement ObamaCare against them.
Reason is that by the mid-term of 2014, the ObamaCare Exchanges will be in place in ALL states. Given the number of un-insured in the purple or red states, people will start wondering HOW opposing ACA benefits them PERSONALLY.
I believe that together with pushing election reform, identifying people in districts represented by gop who are uninsured will be one way to increase PBO’s support
I suspect that these gop governors who are reluctantly beginning to support implementation of ObamaCare understand what is coming in 2014 & that people in the end will mainly decide based on the conditions of their own lives. Yes budgets are important to the governors but most important to them is a loss of votes.
what other issues do you feel we can use to convert some reasonable republicans?
excellent. I think minimum wage will be a good one to emphasize. Polls show that Pubs and Dems, agree that it should be raised. PBO brought it up in the SOTU and planted the seed that it was worth campaigning on. I hope that some of the squishy Dems jump on board in 2014 and not run from or distance themselves from PBO as some have done in the past.
minimum wage has to be a key issue. a number of Dems usually hesitate to do right but once they get a sense of the politics, they come around to supporting PBO
I am ready to do it….we can no longer stand by and “let someone else do it”. Like PBO said, “we are the change we’ve been looking for”. The GOP and Moneyed Interest are doing to try shock and awe on the American working people by cutting jobs, firing people, and making life miserable. I know so many working people who are being worked to death, their companies are bought by capitalist who then make them train their replacements for their severance. There is NO WAY IN HELL I would train someone MY JOB for what is due me. We need to fight back.
I have been thinking on three things that I believe are my strength :
(1) do additional mobilization from my community – this I will do and its a focus on immigrant communities that I am approaching to support immigration reform & with the long term goal of swelling the voters rolls in the Ultimate Swing State (you know the one that put PBO over the top twice)
(b) start a national movement to recruit new young leaders (specifically for the red districts and purple) districts; these leaders should focus on going where politicians fear to go and seek votes based on a promise to reform voting, funding of elections, and focus on economic equityand poverty elimination
(c) join with a group of young people to educate the majority of doubters about the benefits of ObamaCare – based on the model of the Freedoom-riders during the Civll Rights struggle
giving me inspiration to develop a personal agenda of my own…

Hello Amk. Forgive me, this is off-topic, but above you recommend six different security and clean-up programs. I have a couple of them and they work well for me. But do you run ALL six at the same time, trouble free along with a primary anti-virus, etc. software? I’m asking because my 11 year old continues to get his machine infected with nasties, exploring every possible corner of the Minecraft universe. Twice now we’ve had to have his P.C. picked up and worked over by a techie and operating system reloaded. Anything I can do to fight back I’ll try if it won’t cause other problems! Thanks!
Something amk may not mention, Dave, spelled: Apple. (Huh.)
Oh, well, sure there’s always THAT. Thank you Pamela, but, well……uuh…mmm…at this point… *SIGH*
magapie – Yes, they all do different jobs – virus, sayware, adware, spamware andother such nasties out there. And they don’t clash with each other.
One caveat – You can’t have two anti-virus running at the same time. For example, microsoft security essentials (MSE) is an AV and will clash with norton, avg, avast, kaspersky, mcafee etc.
As Pamela sez, apple OS is better than M$ windows for system protection (but at what cost ?)

Hold onto something for this one-
Reince Priebus is staking his legacy as Republican National Committee chairman on improving the party’s performance with minority voters.
“I just sort of reached a boiling point on the issue,” Priebus told The Hill in an interview at RNC headquarters on Friday. “I want to fix these problems.”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANYONE is a “minority” to them if they aren’t rich and white…and old….this may NEVER be accomplished in Rinse’s lifetime:)
How can you get minorities on your side when you applaud cuts to Head Start and military people.
Because he so genuinely wants to help ‘these’ (poor) people, his innate goodness will just shine through… ?
Tell Priebus this black American says “it will never happen”.
I think you’re right, globalcitizenlinda. Since the lines have been drawn to minimize our voting strength and power, changing the minds of those who are “self-proclaimed” GOP might be our best strategy yet. This is not only true at the national level but also at the local level. I live in the very very RED, RED state of Alabama when not too long ago our state legislature was predominantly led by Democrats–many were conservative–mind you–but nevertheless Demos. And believe it or not, one of our Congress criters at the national level today, US Sen Richard Shelby, used to be a Democrat. I once worked as a summer intern in Shelby’s Washington office back in the day—well before he became a Republican!
So yes, I think it’s possible to change the minds of those “self-proclaimed” Republicans ! It’ll be like moving a mountain, but I think we can do it. Our biggest hurdle will be to convince enough white folks in our states , like many of those here in Alabama, that our African American President Obama is NOT the enemy. The actual enemy (enemies) is GOP—especially those downright ruthless Republican legislators (at both the national and state levels) who are bought and paid for by the TeaParty (Boehner, Canter, McCain, McConnell, Shelby, etc). How to you convince these voters that when they vote Republican, they are voting against their own interests? It’s going to be an uphill battle, but we’ve got to try something.
there are some who are so racially baised against PBO that they are unreachable but others can be convinced with patience and prayers to make them open to facts.
I think of two ways to start:
(1) use the maps on things like poverty, health insurance, poor schools etc and identify the first-tier areas to approach; get a few people in these communities and ask them how their permanent vote for gop has not made their personal position any better over these centuries
(b) use the few people in these areas to invite their friends for house meetings where we show them that their legislators are not representing their intrests or even thinking for themselves. rather they are putting in place policies that are written by ALEC and Koch brothers.
Dem Gov’s plan on leading on climate change in their individual states, with GOP blocking new laws.

The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt frowns upon public display including music. Thursday, protests for freedom of speech and movement took place by a group performing the Harlem Shake in the streets. This, after 4 students were arrested on 2/23 for attempting to video themselves in public.
“Hundreds of protesters danced outside the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo, and students and ultraconservative Islamists known as Salafists clashed in Sidi Bouzid, the Tunisian town where the wave of uprisings in the Arab world began with a very different gesture of defiance. The rally by about 400 activist dancers in Cairo on Thursday night, outside the offices of President Mohamed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, was streamed live to the Web by activists and caught on video by the news site Egyptian El Badil.- http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/28/harlem-shake-protests-in-tunisia-and-egypt/

Remember the grassroots group “RedNecks For Obama”?
I must admit that the first time I read this name, I had to make a double-take.
I know that the people on this group were ordinary people who worked to elect and voted for PBO and I admired their openess.
I think OFA should assign a group of dedicated staffers to get some feedback from the members of this group and find out ways that they believe some obstinate members of their community can be reached and encouraged to support PBO’s agenda.
this is one of the groups that needs to grow and increase its outreach. May be it can help out in converting the red and purple congressional districts
Could say the same thing about Republicans for Obama….good idea.
You wouldn’t know it by the USA/MSM but the world is changing:
1) As noted above, Bibi is struggling. Left stronger than ever.
2) In Italy, center-left Bersani did so well against center-right that a week out the election is inconclusive.
3) In a section of Britain the left did so well this week that Cameron’s leadership faces serious challenges.
4) Syrizia, in Greece, led by a dynamic young guy named Tsipras came very, very close to toppling center right government.
5) Best of all, Hollande in France—-victorious and in power.
Austerity is being rejected globally.
Power, however, will not give up.

America’s sequestered recovery
The sequester has no economic justification – it is the product of ideology and political stalemate.
The real aim of the sequester’s advocates is a smaller federal government – a goal that often is cloaked in the argument that excessive government spending is choking economic growth. Although this is a politically compelling argument, because it stokes public fears about an out-of-control deficit, it flies in the face of the facts.
Anemic government spending, not profligacy, has been a major factor behind the economy’s lackluster recovery. According to a recent report [PDF] by the Congressional Budget Office, large spending cuts by state and local governments – and, more recently, a significant reduction in federal spending – have contributed to the unusual and prolonged weakness of aggregate demand.
Even without the sequester, real per capita government spending (including both purchases and transfer payments) has declined under President Barack Obama, while it increased under every preceding president since Richard Nixon (indeed, per capita spending growth was much faster under the Republican administrations of Ronald Reagan and George W Bush than it was under Democratic Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton). And, even without the sequester, the federal budget deficit is set to fall at a faster pace during the next two years than in any two-year period since demobilisation after World War II.

I get that, criquet, but the joke was not about PBO, it was about the losers who still live at home, wasting their lives online! While PBO has become a leader of World Leaders, as is evidenced by new stories of challenges to status quo all around the world!
during his press conference on the sequester yesterday, what particularly stood out for me is PBO’s answer to a member of the WHPC who quote that pompous bloomberg’s remarks that the effects of the cuts were being exaggrated.
I don’t know how many noted that PBO brilliantly reminded the WHPC that effect depends on where you are sitting and that the janitors who were cleaning after the press & congress, before and after his press conference, were going to be hurt significantly. he quoted a number of low wage earners who do the vital day-to-day work and who were largely unnoticed by the press but would suffer
Perhaps if the press and the congress were to do a bit of cleaning up after themselves, for a pittance wage, they would see things differently.

Yes, thanks VC, a pretty day in the Pacific NW, not really super sunny, but not at all cold, flowering shrubs and trees are coming in fast, the birds are hard at work, worms and slugs surfacing… There is much to be done to welcome the spring! Kitty and I went out for a walk, she always goes on a lead. She does NOT like the winter rain, but she is beginning to be interested in all that fresh grass and likes to count her birds!
Went to eat and just came back , this is so mean, Pamela: ‘flowering shrubs and trees are coming in fast, the birds are hard at work, worms and slugs surfacing’. You could have stopped at the ‘not at all cold’ – that was reasonable. No need to rub it in that we are still in the middle of winter with no signs of flowers anywhere, not even in the imagination!

I know, Roberta, I feel terrified when I see stuff like this. I had actually watched a National Parks docu on Midway a few years ago, when I was still interested in tv, so this is not a new scenario, but it is sickening. So many people just do not know. There is a huge gyre circulating in the Pacific, an enormous whirlpool vast and deep, which pulls in all that trash and sucks it to the bottom of the sea. I think you can google it, maybe under National Geographic, maybe NOAA, which will keep you awake at night. I feel massively guilty buying anything, or throwing anything even in the trash. But here, in the Puget Sound region, we have learned a tremendous amount about protecting the oceans, and our water systems. The Aussies are making great progress as well, with programs like SeaFlavour, PADI, and Australian fisheries. They try to educate people, and are very effective. Take heart, my friend, while there are conscious people who care, all is not lost.
Maybe try to just copy the link, keep your FB page open, hit Status, then paste it in. Then again, my advice may not be sound, as I am an apple girl, and apple makes it so easy peasey…. But don’t tell amk I said that….
Don’t worry Pamela. I will prolly be Me Too apple boy soon. I looked at macbook air and am veering toward to it.

Boehner will accept only a 100%-0% deal
By Steve Benen
Indeed, if Boehner were to accept Obama’s compromise, Boehner would still come out on top since the spending-cut totals would still easily outweigh the revenue totals. The president’s offer, at face value, is already a win for the GOP.
But Republicans won’t accept a win; they’ll accept a rout. According to Boehner, the only available solution to a problem he helped create is one in which his side gets 100% of what it wants, predicated on the assumption that the massive spending cuts agreed to in 2011 have escaped Republicans’ memories altogether.
At this point, most Americans want a compromise. Most Democrats want and have already proposed a compromise. But Boehner wants everyone to know there will be no compromise, and there’s nothing the president can say or do to change his mind.
I’ll now look forward to pundits everywhere telling me how “both sides” are to blame.

Bob, do you know how many Republican votes Nancy needs for this? Last year she needed 26 R votes if the Dem caucus held together. Since we won 8 seats, I guess she would need 18? I wonder if that silent “common sense” caucus that PBO talked about includes 18 sane Rs. If we knew who they were, we could put special pressure on them.
If the Republicans will not be fair, I don’t want the President to compromise.
Unfortunately annie, PBO will compromise, no matter that the GOP has no intention of being fair.
Progress is only made through compromise and cooperation. However, PBO NEVER compromises in a way that ultimately hurts the most vulnerable. I’ve known him as President for 4+ years now, and have absolutely no reason to believe otherwise.
so true. and he knows the rethugs and their media are ready to pounce on any real or perceived lack of cooperation on his part. they consider obstinance to be perfectly reasonable for themselves, compromise to be required of pbo, but only complete capitulation to be acceptable for any ‘deals’.

5 Reasons Republicans Don’t Want Credit For The Sequester Cuts They Won
PLEASE TRY AND ACT SURPRISED!
Fox News cribbed research and graphics directly from a National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) press release without disclosing their origin in order to attack President Obama’s purported “sequester priorities.”
Mentioned by a poster above – it is a good day to remember this
The GOP are trying to create an “angry black man” – yet again – they will fail.
The carried interest loophole for millionaire traders is the perfect example of the tax breaks the GOP is risking recession to protect
I’m about to shock you.
Read this: “Skewing income toward the upper, upper class hurts our economy because the rich tend to sit on their money — unlike lower- and middle-income people, who spend a large share of their paychecks, and hence stimulate economic activity.”
Guess who wrote it?
A Republican — the same guys who now won’t take credit for the sequestration cuts they won. And not just a regular Republican, the Republican woman who George W. Bush picked to run the FDIC — Shelia Bair.
In 2013, it’s nearly a miracle when someone who identifies as a Republican dares to state common sense.
But Bair didn’t stop there in her recent op-ed for the New York Times “Grand Old Parity.” She called on the GOP to end the tax breaks we give to hedge fund managers that allow them to treat their income as investment income — a heinous exploitation of the tax code that has been protected by Republicans and a few Democrats due to the outrageous amount of money the financial industry spends on lobbying.
This video complements the discussion about wealth in the US. I think it’s something worth sharing with contacts.
Wealth Inequality – a visual youtube.com/watch?feature=…— Vick C. (@sonamie) March 02, 2013
This is brilliant and sobering. All those tea baggers screeching about “wealth distribution” don’t realize that their own wealth is actually being redistributed by their puppet masters’ pockets – the top 1%! What fools.
Hey you! It’s been a while since we’ve crossed paths! How’s life – you made any ‘moves’ yet? :0
I remember Sheila Bair. She is very powerful, was blacklisted I believe by the GOP, and even during the congressional hearings when Elizabeth Warren was creating such a stir, no one would touch Sheila Bair. She was SO RIGHT, and had so much authority when she spoke, the crooks were and probably still are, terrified of her. I think I saw her on Bill Moyers a few years ago. Happy to hear she is making her voice heard again, her help is needed.
from james fallows:
‘ If the GOP’s refusal to compromise was labeled as it actually is, they might pay a political price and be willing to cut a deal. But by blaming both sides equally even though President Obama is offering a balanced solution, the media have severely curtailed whatever political incentive there is for cutting a deal. After all, if the Democrats are blamed for not compromising even when they have made all the concessions, why on earth should the Republicans ever concede anything?
Blaming both sides for lack of compromise when one side has refused to make any concessions is like punishing all athletes when only some take steroids. If everyone is getting punished no matter what, why not break the rules and hit some home runs? ‘

The “Sequester” follows the long-standing “trigger” strategy we first wrote about in 2011. The idea, which was probably dreamed up by some high-priced consultant, seems to be this: Pass a bill that creates some “trigger” effect at some point in the future. If nothing else is done the “trigger” goes off, and highly unpopular and destructive spending cuts will go into effect as if untouched by human hand.
By using the “trigger” strategy, politicians believed (and apparently still believe) that they can escape the political and moral consequences of their own actions. It wasn’t me that did these things, they can argue, it was the “trigger.”
The forces of austerity have cooked up a number of triggers during their multi-year battle against government, which escalated right after Wall Street decimated the economy. They’ve had different names: Debt ceiling. “SaveGo.” Fiscal cliff. And now, Sequester.
Each was a stratagem for imposing austerity economics on an unwilling population. Each was a crude device, a political IED designed to explode after its designers had left the scene of the crime.
We need to make sure the “trigger” strategy doesn’t work this time. It mustn’t work, if we’re to stop the seemingly relentless march of corporate-and billionaire-funded austerity.
The Sequester and its harsh consequences were enacted into law by Congress. As its effects reverberate into the lives of millions of Americans, let’s keep the spotlight on the actors as well as the act.
And let’s call that act what it is: An act of aggression, aimed at the heart of our nation’s social contract. These destructive and needless cuts, whose only purpose is to benefit the wealthy, are a civic crime. And Capitol Hill is the scene of the crime.
A “political IED” used by economic terrorists. How fitting a description is that.
The real GOP problem – from one of my favorite blogs

yes, they were a teensy tiny bit flexible on revenues a couple of years ago, because they got massive spending cuts in return. so, that’s it on revenues for the next thousand years or so. apparently they don’t care that majorities of americans in all categories find this to be wrong-headed. they just want to please the ultra-right in their tighty-whitey districts, to heck with america.
We need to start naming the GOP puppet masters that are creating this nonsense. We know there can’t be very many of them, since they represent about 0.3% of the population. List their names, their businesses, their products. Let us send them a message that they depend on us – not the other way around! They typically got to the top by lying, cheating and stealing, and would likely not be able to recreate the circumstances that created their wealth or influence. Grifters.
given the path that the gop has taken so far since PBO was re-elected, one suspects that they intend to continue with the same radicalism.
educating the voters who are not as interested politics and spelling out to them exactly who is causing their pain may help more people to come out and vote in the mid-term
The lies about the deficit are frightening – both in terms of the size and its impact on current and future generations. NO-ONE worried about the deficit for 8 years of George Bush – but when the blah guy tries to help the majority of the population – rather than give the country to the wealthy and their war mongering friends – suddenly there is a deficit.
The poor and disadvantaged – those without health care, those with medicare – didn’t cause 2 wars – nor bring about the disaster of the recession – but the GOP and their water carriers conveniently forget reality. Voters are bombarded with lies about the President and his policies EVERY single day. When I hear about everything his is supposedly “giving” to the poor – most of whom need food stamps to survive – the tears are flowing.
The GOP want to kill the poor via starvation – and the middle class with guns – the media supports them – and people will vote to allow this to happen.
The GOP don’t necessarily want to kill the poor via starvation, because they need the poor to work as a sort of slave class. They want people – both the poor and those at the lower end of the middle class spectrum – to be so desperate that they accept anything that’s offered to them. They also want to fill their private prisons so that they can eliminate voters, and make money at the same time.
GOP: “Eliminate the minimum wage because it will create more jobs”.
Us: Really? Where the evidence of that?
GOP: “Put children to work because they need to learn the dignity of work”.
Us: But they’re children – shouldn’t they be learning the tools that will ensure they’re in a position to take decent jobs and contribute significantly to the economy?
GOP: “We can’t raise taxes on the rich, because they’re the job creators”.
Us: Again, where’s the evidence of that? Because they’ve had lower tax rates for the last several years, and no jobs to show for it.
It’s amazing that people fall for this crap.

A CLASSIC CASE OF LYING BY OMISSION. THE TRUTH JUST DOES NOT FIT THE NARRATIVE THEY WANT TO PORTRAY.
A Balanced Plan to Avert the Sequester and Reduce the Deficit
President Obama believes that our guiding focus must be growing the economy and strengthening the middle class . That’s his North Star, and it’s why he won’t accept cuts that force the middle class to bear the burden of deficit reduction.
The President has put forward a specific plan that will avoid sequestration’s harmful budget cuts and reduce the deficit in a balanced way — by cutting spending, finding savings in entitlement programs and closing tax loopholes.
Both parties have already come together to cut the deficit by more than $2.5 trillion and today the deficit is coming down at the fastest pace since then end of World War II.
President Obama’s plan builds on this progress and would cut the deficit by another $1.5 trillion, bringing it below its historic average.

I just sent e-mails to ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN telling them that I am so fed up with the media telling us that both parties are responsible for the problems going on in D.C. when they know dam well the problem lies with that radical extreme racists women hating Republican Party. From the moment Barack Obama walk into that oval office the Republicans decided not to compromise with him, even if it meant destroying this economy and country. An the media need to be honest instead of telling lies for the Republican Party.
Interesting that government dysfunction ALWAYS seems to happen with a democratic President and a republican Leader of the house – the latter are doomed to be failed by history – but sadly cause grief before that happens.

To be honest, we probably know 1% of everything that’s going on in this part of the world and what the Administration is doing. The media doesn’t report on it unless it’s somehow to taint the Administration. So, as far as I’m concerned, this is one area where the President has earned his bona fides, and I trust that he’s doing the right thing with whatever options he’s got available to him.

Computer games, especially the on-line ones, are full of spyware/adware/malware/tracking crap. I never allow my son to touch my laptop and never had any games in it – except of course solitaire.

Grand Bargain call for $4T in deficit reduction? D.C. has now done it. "virtually untouched Medicare, Medicaid, & SS" nyti.ms/VnKcai— The lovely Plains (@DaRiverZkind) March 03, 2013
President Obama just hit 4Trillion. While protecting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid beneficiaries
It will be interesting what the final tally will be with regards to the fines for cancelled contracts, the additional costs for unemployment insurance claims, the increase to the deficit bottom line and the decline of the economy.
