The GOP have been playing victim since Palin showed them how to do it. The President and his family have had to face much worse for 5 years – but he just gets on with his job. McConnell should shut up and do some work.

I told him that when Republicans have made racists comments about the President and First Lady, I don’t recall any Republican leader stepping forward and condemning the comments. If things stay the same, then in 35 years, SS will only be paying 80 cents for every dollar you put in, Medicare looses it’s solvency in about 13-16 years, and Medicaid is a State budget nightmare(should be federalized!
So, while I agree that the debt/deficit is being manipulated by the Republicans and the Beltway, to say we don’t have a problem is not true.

I think that was also part of why in the 80′s Reagan did the Immigration reform, it was to get all of the people not citizens yet and not paying into SS or taxes. That made SS solvent again. I am not too sure where I read that, but I lived through that change.
I have yet to see a government anywhere in the world that budgets more than 2-4 years ahead. No-one knows at this stage what will be the situation with SS and medicare in the future & any estimates I would take with a grain of salt. In my world the equivalent of SS is means tested – people are now forced through employment to save for their retirement & the boomers will be the first generation where a reasonable % will not be dependent on SS in retirement. Who knows what future US governments will do? They may means test SS – they may increase the tax rate to 1950 levels – but it won’t be finalized in this or the next administration.

The way to solve the debt is to have more people employed at higher paying jobs, and more of those people at the top paying the taxes they now currently bypass – even though they use much more of the public goods (roads, bridges, rail lines, police to keep the law, courts and trade organizations to protect their intellectual and physical property, human resources educated at public schools). If those rich people who get 380 times more income than the rest of the 99% of the country, and hold 40% of the country’s wealth, would pay their fair share – then we would not have a debt problem. As it is, 99% of the public is paying the share of the top 1%, but not reaping the profits in kind from their labor via a secure and sustained social safety net.
More income into the federal coffers means more sustainable safety net. Less income (through higher unemployment or tax loopholes that only a few are able to take advantage of) puts that safety net at risk.

This isn’t speculation. It happened once already—in December, the last time sequestration cuts were imminent. The economy suddenly slowed late last year, according to government estimates, and the single biggest reason was a sudden contraction of defense spending. The reason those expenditures fell was that the Pentagon, anticipating cuts, began slowing down purchases and other expenditures. You can bet they’ll be doing the same thing now. So will the people who run Head Start programs or public schools heavily dependent on federal funds. So will the people who provide business or contract services to a wide variety of agencies. The effects of sequestration may not be immediately visible to Rush Limbaugh or to the majority of Americans, but in some ways that makes them even more dangerous.
The right wing and their zombie followers don’t even understand what role the government plays in their lives. They demonize first responders. They badmouth teachers. They screech for the government to stay out of their Medicare… So, it only makes sense that they would be blase about budget cuts that will impact their red states more than any other state, and it also makes sense that they will blame the President and Democrats once they feel the impact of those cuts. They’re programmed to do so.
Nothing surprises me when it comes to these jackals. or as PBO puts it “Carnival Barkers. The GOP/ Tea suckers are rebranded as far as I’m concerned. They are a traveling side show.

Yesterday I was at an all day Progressive Summit in PA and there was a discussion of what Dems have to do to win back the US House, not to mention our state houses. In 2006, D candidates won in Republican leaning areas by presenting themselves as conservative, i.e., Blue Dogs. These Dems then became a drag to getting anything done in House and had to be cajoled and compromised with at every turn. The thought was that with the Republican brand becoming more and more toxic, Democrats could actually run and win on a progressive platform. They cited the three recently elected state senators who won in Red districts on progressive platforms, while running against far right Rs. Even highly partisan issues like abortion can be won if the approach is a common sense one. Never use the words, “pro-choice.” Talk in terms of difficult decisions for the woman who finds herself pregnant and emphasize that such a decision shouldn’t be left in the hands of politicians. In Pa, a D state senator actually won his seat in an R district by running on abortion because his opponent was so extreme he turned women off. Progressive ideas, if presented in well-thought-out language and appeals to common sense ,can be very appealing and we don’t have to resort to electing Republican-lite Dems. It would be a great liberation if progressive ideas, which poll very well, could come out of the closet and, for once, true Progressives could be elected outside of the blue states. I hope we get a presidential style campaign for the US House and Senate next year. I will work as hard as I can and donate as much as I can to make that happen. We’ve worked ourselves silly for two presidential campaigns and we can’t let all of that effort go to waste with a unpatriotic and destructive US House. Right now R governors are decimating our state economies and destroying our right to vote. These governors have to go. We need a Progressive revolution in 2014.
The Problem is gerrmandeted districts and a sprinkle of racism in those districts. Thru don’t care about policy, they only care about one upping the Black guy in the WH.
Makes them feel better, and the democrats running in those districts, tend to run away from the President instead of defending him.
It is what it is.
Well, Jovie, I’m not giving up and a lot of people vote for the person actually on the ballot in mid-terms. We only have to get 17 seats and I’m not going to start out thinking that’s impossible if enough effort, money and intensity are directed to the effort. Plus I never underestimate the potential of Republican candidates to shoot themselves in the foot with ideas so repellent that they turn people off.
PF, From what I understand there are branches of the DSCC and the DCCC that will be working in PA, but I would work for the candidates that declare themselves in your own district. They will need your time and money.
Democrats need to figure out how to play dirty like the Republicans do. Find an Independent who leans Democratic but will carry the Republican message for the sake of being elected. That’s what they do. Gotta fight fire with fire. How many Democrats do we have in office, who are really Republicans?
I agree, global, the range of things our Dem candidates can talk about is endless. I only cite abortion because it was surprisingly a winning issue for the Dem in a red area BECAUSE the R candidate was so extreme. If the R candidate is spouting pure ugly, that presents a opportunity for winning by being sane and reasonable. Of course, this won’t work in a blood red area, but in marginal, leaning R districts, it can work. It also takes lots of hard work, good timing, and enough money to take advantage of opportunities on the Dem’s part. That’s where we come in. All we need is 17 seats.

You’re discounting one important calculus…for many, many whites the Republican party is the “white party” and the Democratic Party is the “minority party”. It’s that simple.
I heard a snippet of Tom Hartmann in the car the other day, caught the tail end of all of it…but in essence he said that their was a poll done…like a blind study, where they just laid out the ideas of progressives and conservatives and there was not one mention of party ideology in the poll…just laying out the ideas and seeing where most people agreed and disagreed. If you stripped all mention of party affiliation and worded the questions very “vanilla”…the results were that the majority in this poll favored progressive ideas by a majority.
I found that very telling. If you took the toxicity away and gave people a choice, they choose the progressive solution. Heartening to hear…and I kind of had a feeling that would happen…Dems don’t sound like the nut cases here…..
That is a very interesting story about the candidate who used his abortion views to good effect in a red district. So many of the battles are between buzzwords and slogans. I don’t use the expressions ‘pro-choice’ and ‘pro-life.’ I think it was a big mistake to cede the latter to the anti abortion crowd. I say I’m pro access to safe abortions, as opposed to those who are anti access to safe abortions.
Excellent post. I believe a candidate who is honest and forthright about their progressive views can win. “Maybe you don’t agree with what I say, but you can trust me to be honest with you” is a good strategy. For 2014, we have to focus like laser-beams on winnable seats, and we have to pay attention to state level races as well so we don’t get these far right legislatures in states that go blue in presidential years. I hope that after 2012 those Obama voters who stayed home in 2010 have learned that they can’t sit out the non-presidential years. I trust OFA, sort of trust the DCCC, to use their analytical skills to figure out our best strategies. But we all have to be the foot soldiers just as in 2012.
Just a thought. I am in one of those areas Jovie is talking about where Dems ran from the President but this time I am talking about in 2012. As an OFA volunteer it created a kind of revulsion towards those Dem candidates. Though I worked in 2010 for all Dem candidates and we made a big difference, I am struggling now in anticipation of 2014. I want to support candidates because I think they are trustworthy (not perfect or uncompromising just trustworthy as I feel the President is). Anyway, I was thinking that AUTHENTICITY and INTEGRITY are what I am looking for now. I feel its a winning combo for Dems since the GOP has gone so far in the direction of having to dissemble to get elected or to gerrymander so that they can exclude moderate voters. Dem candidates in our area have to consider the opinions of the GOP voters because they are at least equal if not higher in percentage to Dems. That can be a good thing because the respect, empower and include mechanism is a necessity. The GOP has forgotten how important that is because their hubris driven agenda designed by their recent leaders takes them away from that. In the end I think the means will determine the end and everyone will be looking for those that refuse to misrepresent or misdirect. If Democrats embrace who they truly are and become smarter at not falling into semantic traps at the same time (as has been mentioned above), I think it could work.
My belief is that only good can overcome evil. Only honesty can overcome deception.
Amen, Catrst. If a Dem in your area is running for Congress you should have many opportunities to meet that person at Democratic meetings or dinners. Take some time to express your views about supporting the president and certainly, write, call or e-mail that person. They need to know that they turn Democrats off when they turn their back on PBO.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Claire McCaskill and Bill Nelson will introduce legislation that would cut pay for members of Congress if federal employees are furloughed due to the sequester. The legislation calls for a reduction in Congressional salaries once federal furloughs begin.
“The federal workforce is looking at furloughs that would result in a sizeable pay cut-and there’s absolutely no reason members of Congress should exempt themselves,” McCaskill said. “We can and should reach a balanced compromise to replace these damaging across-the-board cuts, but until we do, this is an obvious step to hold Congress accountable for the job we need to get done.”
Like I said yesterday, they don’t care because they have no skin in the game!
That’s a great idea. Also, cut their health insurance. Make them go to the private insurers and see what they can find. Until they do that, they won’t realize what normal people have to do.

Am in MASS taking care of a sister following surgery and a local TV station did a great job covering one of the fallouts of the sequester here where Natick Labs (testing efficacy of military gear) will have to furlough nearly 1600 employees for 22 days. Luckily not laying off employees, but they did discuss the impact on businesses in the area if people lost about a month’s income. Hope red state news teams are doing the same.

I agree very strongly with this assessment and here is why:
if you are a voter and your socio-economic outlook has not changed over the years that you have been voting for the party that controls your whole state, a candidate who is going to get your attention is someone offering something NEW.
In other words, the central question to voters in the red and purple districts is: for years you have voted gop & their policies, yet your OWN situation (on e.g. education, incomes etc) is still the same or has become worse, don’t think it is time to give the other option a chance?
I heard this story this morning, and was heartened by the voters in that country and the fact that they’re fed up with fat cats getting rewarded even when they so obviously have failed at their jobs. They said that the business lobbying group fought hard, and claimed that capping executive salaries would make the country less competitive – and voters did the right thing anyway. Let’s hope that some of that clear-eyed thinking can make its way over to this side of the Atlantic.

Boehner Sees No Resolution for Sequester
House Speaker John Boehner told NBC News there “is no easy way to stop the budget cuts — known as the ‘sequester’ – that began taking effect Friday night, and voiced uncertainty over how Washington can solve the overall fiscal problems that have consumed the nation’s politics for more than two years.”
Said Boehner: “I don’t think anyone quite understands how it gets resolved.”
Nancy Pelosi…….John Boehner. This is a example why women should get the same pay that men get, if they do the same job. Boehner and Pelosi are Speakers of the House. Pelosi were the Speaker, but there is no question that Nancy Pelosi were a better Speaker than Boehner. Proving a woman can do a job just as good if not better than a man.
It’s important to note, that where ever you are, when a Democrat is picked to run in your district, make a point to defend the President.
If they run away from his policies and Him, they will lose!

it’s not just Republicans who refuse to accept it when Obama gives them what they want; the same applies, with even less justification, to centrist pundits. As people like Greg Sargent point out time and again, the centrist ideal — deficit reduction via a mix of revenue increases and benefits cuts — is what Obama is already offering; in fact, his proposals have been to the right of Bowles-Simpson. Yet the centrist pundits keep demanding that Obama offer what he has already offered, and condemn both sides equally (or even place most of the blame on Obama) for the failure to reach a deal. Again, informing them of their error wouldn’t help; their whole shtick is about blaming both sides, and they will always invent some reason why Obama just isn’t doing it right.

OK I was just knocked off of TOD and got a message ‘server maintenance’ it said not to do anything on the browser (back or forward) for 5 minutes then refresh. So i thought that maybe word press was fixing the reply notification issue. did anyone else get that while on here. i also had just visited a site I hadn’t visited before and wonder if i didn’t wander into cyber never never land.
no not me. I logged out and in to wordpress. That fixed me being able to “like” but I still am not getting notifications of people responding to my posts.
I’m not so sure I agree with Bloomberg using his money in local elections. Statewide or congressional elections maybe, not even sure then, but definitely not at the local district level. There were about 11+ Dems running to replace Jr. As far as I know, only one of them had a positive NRA score. So how did Bloomberg choose this particular person? I happen to think in this case she was the best pick for her constituents, but how did Bloomberg know this? Who did he consult? What does she owe him policy wise other than gun vote legislation? I still don’t think this is the way to go. Now on the other hand, OFA will be doing similar things at the local level, but I hope they let the local folks take the lead and be the face of the movement.
I understand how you feel…here in Phila,,, DEM politics is full of cronyism…the DEM is not grassrroots..there was conflict here …between OFA and some of the DEM machne…hence OFA had lot of out of town folks knocking on doors…
when i was block captain…i butted heads with some of the local committee people because we did voter registration….there are organizing differences between some of the DEM Machine and OFA….
we shall see how we move forward…
some times the local folks are not about empowering the community …more interested in keeping power for themselves…
Be advised everyone. Robin Kelly is my Congresswoman and has a track record in State government and is much, much better than JJ jr.And Debbie Halverson. She is the real deal that’s why I voted for her.
I am not a fan of Mayor Bloomberg, he’s not a musician, so I guess I will put it like this, sometimes he say things about POTUS that he doesn’t have to say. And I don’t like it.
I agree w/ both of you in your sentiments; I could care less for him personally but as a counterweight to the NRA, spend….spend….spend…we need all the allies we can get. Remember the NRA only spent about $30 million in 2012, it was the threat that scared congressman, now their are several counterweights. The more the merrier, in my opinion.
Gun control is only one of the many, many, many issues that face that community. Since Bloomberg decided to pour his money into that community on TV ads to elect a candidate, then I hope he’s as willing to spend money or help Kelly get the really necessary stuff for her community. I’m not talking about implementing a ‘stop and frisk’ policy either. Is that next? Will she be expected to get that initiative off the ground, since it’s working so well for him? Sorry, but for me, in this case, it’s ok to reject what may seem to be the perfect as the enemy of the good.

If things stay the same, then in 35 years, SS will only be paying 80 cents for every dollar you put in, Medicare looses it’s solvency in about 13-16 years, and Medicaid is a State budget nightmare(should be federalized!
So, while I agree that the debt/deficit is being manipulated by the Republicans and the Beltway, to say we don’t have a problem is not true.

I think that was also part of why in the 80′s Reagan did the Immigration reform, it was to get all of the people not citizens yet and not paying into SS or taxes. That made SS solvent again. I am not too sure where I read that, but I lived through that change.
I have yet to see a government anywhere in the world that budgets more than 2-4 years ahead. No-one knows at this stage what will be the situation with SS and medicare in the future & any estimates I would take with a grain of salt. In my world the equivalent of SS is means tested – people are now forced through employment to save for their retirement & the boomers will be the first generation where a reasonable % will not be dependent on SS in retirement. Who knows what future US governments will do? They may means test SS – they may increase the tax rate to 1950 levels – but it won’t be finalized in this or the next administration.

The way to solve the debt is to have more people employed at higher paying jobs, and more of those people at the top paying the taxes they now currently bypass – even though they use much more of the public goods (roads, bridges, rail lines, police to keep the law, courts and trade organizations to protect their intellectual and physical property, human resources educated at public schools). If those rich people who get 380 times more income than the rest of the 99% of the country, and hold 40% of the country’s wealth, would pay their fair share – then we would not have a debt problem. As it is, 99% of the public is paying the share of the top 1%, but not reaping the profits in kind from their labor via a secure and sustained social safety net.
More income into the federal coffers means more sustainable safety net. Less income (through higher unemployment or tax loopholes that only a few are able to take advantage of) puts that safety net at risk.
You can’t solve the debt by laying off people who pay taxes. A major reason for the current deficit is the recession and high unemployment.

He was invited to CPAC and is being stroked to run for President. Dr Carlson, to me, is just as lost as the rest of right wing numb nuts.
Yesterday I was at an all day Progressive Summit in PA and there was a discussion of what Dems have to do to win back the US House, not to mention our state houses. In 2006, D candidates won in Republican leaning areas by presenting themselves as conservative, i.e., Blue Dogs. These Dems then became a drag to getting anything done in House and had to be cajoled and compromised with at every turn. The thought was that with the Republican brand becoming more and more toxic, Democrats could actually run and win on a progressive platform. They cited the three recently elected state senators who won in Red districts on progressive platforms, while running against far right Rs. Even highly partisan issues like abortion can be won if the approach is a common sense one. Never use the words, “pro-choice.” Talk in terms of difficult decisions for the woman who finds herself pregnant and emphasize that such a decision shouldn’t be left in the hands of politicians. In Pa, a D state senator actually won his seat in an R district by running on abortion because his opponent was so extreme he turned women off. Progressive ideas, if presented in well-thought-out language and appeals to common sense ,can be very appealing and we don’t have to resort to electing Republican-lite Dems. It would be a great liberation if progressive ideas, which poll very well, could come out of the closet and, for once, true Progressives could be elected outside of the blue states. I hope we get a presidential style campaign for the US House and Senate next year. I will work as hard as I can and donate as much as I can to make that happen. We’ve worked ourselves silly for two presidential campaigns and we can’t let all of that effort go to waste with a unpatriotic and destructive US House. Right now R governors are decimating our state economies and destroying our right to vote. These governors have to go. We need a Progressive revolution in 2014.
The Problem is gerrmandeted districts and a sprinkle of racism in those districts. Thru don’t care about policy, they only care about one upping the Black guy in the WH.
Makes them feel better, and the democrats running in those districts, tend to run away from the President instead of defending him.

Well, Jovie, I’m not giving up and a lot of people vote for the person actually on the ballot in mid-terms. We only have to get 17 seats and I’m not going to start out thinking that’s impossible if enough effort, money and intensity are directed to the effort. Plus I never underestimate the potential of Republican candidates to shoot themselves in the foot with ideas so repellent that they turn people off.

PF, From what I understand there are branches of the DSCC and the DCCC that will be working in PA, but I would work for the candidates that declare themselves in your own district. They will need your time and money.
Democrats need to figure out how to play dirty like the Republicans do. Find an Independent who leans Democratic but will carry the Republican message for the sake of being elected. That’s what they do. Gotta fight fire with fire. How many Democrats do we have in office, who are really Republicans?
I think candidates need to talk more about
- how the gop has defunded education and given taxes to their friends in business
- income-stagnation and poverty should be key
- health care & protecting the vulnerable
- cost of education
- going to DC using people power and reject being beholden to big money.
- removing road-blocks to voting
- high rates of incarceration & making profits from locking people away for long periods
I agree, global, the range of things our Dem candidates can talk about is endless. I only cite abortion because it was surprisingly a winning issue for the Dem in a red area BECAUSE the R candidate was so extreme. If the R candidate is spouting pure ugly, that presents a opportunity for winning by being sane and reasonable. Of course, this won’t work in a blood red area, but in marginal, leaning R districts, it can work. It also takes lots of hard work, good timing, and enough money to take advantage of opportunities on the Dem’s part. That’s where we come in. All we need is 17 seats.

You’re discounting one important calculus…for many, many whites the Republican party is the “white party” and the Democratic Party is the “minority party”. It’s that simple.
I heard a snippet of Tom Hartmann in the car the other day, caught the tail end of all of it…but in essence he said that their was a poll done…like a blind study, where they just laid out the ideas of progressives and conservatives and there was not one mention of party ideology in the poll…just laying out the ideas and seeing where most people agreed and disagreed. If you stripped all mention of party affiliation and worded the questions very “vanilla”…the results were that the majority in this poll favored progressive ideas by a majority.
I found that very telling. If you took the toxicity away and gave people a choice, they choose the progressive solution. Heartening to hear…and I kind of had a feeling that would happen…Dems don’t sound like the nut cases here…..
That is a very interesting story about the candidate who used his abortion views to good effect in a red district. So many of the battles are between buzzwords and slogans. I don’t use the expressions ‘pro-choice’ and ‘pro-life.’ I think it was a big mistake to cede the latter to the anti abortion crowd. I say I’m pro access to safe abortions, as opposed to those who are anti access to safe abortions.

I believe a candidate who is honest and forthright about their progressive views can win. “Maybe you don’t agree with what I say, but you can trust me to be honest with you” is a good strategy. For 2014, we have to focus like laser-beams on winnable seats, and we have to pay attention to state level races as well so we don’t get these far right legislatures in states that go blue in presidential years. I hope that after 2012 those Obama voters who stayed home in 2010 have learned that they can’t sit out the non-presidential years. I trust OFA, sort of trust the DCCC, to use their analytical skills to figure out our best strategies. But we all have to be the foot soldiers just as in 2012.

Just a thought. I am in one of those areas Jovie is talking about where Dems ran from the President but this time I am talking about in 2012. As an OFA volunteer it created a kind of revulsion towards those Dem candidates. Though I worked in 2010 for all Dem candidates and we made a big difference, I am struggling now in anticipation of 2014. I want to support candidates because I think they are trustworthy (not perfect or uncompromising just trustworthy as I feel the President is). Anyway, I was thinking that AUTHENTICITY and INTEGRITY are what I am looking for now. I feel its a winning combo for Dems since the GOP has gone so far in the direction of having to dissemble to get elected or to gerrymander so that they can exclude moderate voters. Dem candidates in our area have to consider the opinions of the GOP voters because they are at least equal if not higher in percentage to Dems. That can be a good thing because the respect, empower and include mechanism is a necessity. The GOP has forgotten how important that is because their hubris driven agenda designed by their recent leaders takes them away from that. In the end I think the means will determine the end and everyone will be looking for those that refuse to misrepresent or misdirect. If Democrats embrace who they truly are and become smarter at not falling into semantic traps at the same time (as has been mentioned above), I think it could work.
My belief is that only good can overcome evil. Only honesty can overcome deception.
Amen, Catrst. If a Dem in your area is running for Congress you should have many opportunities to meet that person at Democratic meetings or dinners. Take some time to express your views about supporting the president and certainly, write, call or e-mail that person. They need to know that they turn Democrats off when they turn their back on PBO.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Claire McCaskill and Bill Nelson will introduce legislation that would cut pay for members of Congress if federal employees are furloughed due to the sequester. The legislation calls for a reduction in Congressional salaries once federal furloughs begin.
“The federal workforce is looking at furloughs that would result in a sizeable pay cut-and there’s absolutely no reason members of Congress should exempt themselves,” McCaskill said. “We can and should reach a balanced compromise to replace these damaging across-the-board cuts, but until we do, this is an obvious step to hold Congress accountable for the job we need to get done.”

Am in MASS taking care of a sister following surgery and a local TV station did a great job covering one of the fallouts of the sequester here where Natick Labs (testing efficacy of military gear) will have to furlough nearly 1600 employees for 22 days. Luckily not laying off employees, but they did discuss the impact on businesses in the area if people lost about a month’s income. Hope red state news teams are doing the same.

Jackie, in the comment above suggested that Dems need to run on progressive issues even in red or purple districts.
I agree very strongly with this assessment and here is why:
if you are a voter and your socio-economic outlook has not changed over the years that you have been voting for the party that controls your whole state, a candidate who is going to get your attention is someone offering something NEW.
In other words, the central question to voters in the red and purple districts is: for years you have voted gop & their policies, yet your OWN situation (on e.g. education, incomes etc) is still the same or has become worse, don’t think it is time to give the other option a chance?
In Massachusetts, the Governor is a Drmocrat and the Legislature is 75% Demicratic.
It’s one if the most proficient States in the Nation.

I heard this story this morning, and was heartened by the voters in that country and the fact that they’re fed up with fat cats getting rewarded even when they so obviously have failed at their jobs. They said that the business lobbying group fought hard, and claimed that capping executive salaries would make the country less competitive – and voters did the right thing anyway. Let’s hope that some of that clear-eyed thinking can make its way over to this side of the Atlantic.

Boehner Sees No Resolution for Sequester
House Speaker John Boehner told NBC News there “is no easy way to stop the budget cuts — known as the ‘sequester’ – that began taking effect Friday night, and voiced uncertainty over how Washington can solve the overall fiscal problems that have consumed the nation’s politics for more than two years.”

Why are the First, Fourth and Fifth amendments subject to erosion in the name of homeland security, but the Second Amendment is beyond compromise in the name of saving innocent lives?
The risks of terrorism are not so much greater than the risks of gun violence that a disproportionate response is justified. Between 1969 and 2009, according to a 2011 Heritage Foundation study, 5,586 people were killed in terrorist attacks against the United States or its interests abroad. By comparison, about 30,000 people were killed by guns in the United States every year between 1986 and 2010. This means that about five times as many Americans are killed every year by guns than have been killed in terrorist attacks since Richard Nixon took office.

it’s not just Republicans who refuse to accept it when Obama gives them what they want; the same applies, with even less justification, to centrist pundits. As people like Greg Sargent point out time and again, the centrist ideal — deficit reduction via a mix of revenue increases and benefits cuts — is what Obama is already offering; in fact, his proposals have been to the right of Bowles-Simpson. Yet the centrist pundits keep demanding that Obama offer what he has already offered, and condemn both sides equally (or even place most of the blame on Obama) for the failure to reach a deal. Again, informing them of their error wouldn’t help; their whole shtick is about blaming both sides, and they will always invent some reason why Obama just isn’t doing it right.

OK I was just knocked off of TOD and got a message ‘server maintenance’ it said not to do anything on the browser (back or forward) for 5 minutes then refresh. So i thought that maybe word press was fixing the reply notification issue. did anyone else get that while on here. i also had just visited a site I hadn’t visited before and wonder if i didn’t wander into cyber never never land.

I’m not so sure I agree with Bloomberg using his money in local elections. Statewide or congressional elections maybe, not even sure then, but definitely not at the local district level. There were about 11+ Dems running to replace Jr. As far as I know, only one of them had a positive NRA score. So how did Bloomberg choose this particular person? I happen to think in this case she was the best pick for her constituents, but how did Bloomberg know this? Who did he consult? What does she owe him policy wise other than gun vote legislation? I still don’t think this is the way to go. Now on the other hand, OFA will be doing similar things at the local level, but I hope they let the local folks take the lead and be the face of the movement.
I understand how you feel…here in Phila,,, DEM politics is full of cronyism…the DEM is not grassrroots..there was conflict here …between OFA and some of the DEM machne…hence OFA had lot of out of town folks knocking on doors…
when i was block captain…i butted heads with some of the local committee people because we did voter registration….there are organizing differences between some of the DEM Machine and OFA….
we shall see how we move forward…
some times the local folks are not about empowering the community …more interested in keeping power for themselves…

I am not a fan of Mayor Bloomberg, he’s not a musician, so I guess I will put it like this, sometimes he say things about POTUS that he doesn’t have to say. And I don’t like it.
I agree w/ both of you in your sentiments; I could care less for him personally but as a counterweight to the NRA, spend….spend….spend…we need all the allies we can get. Remember the NRA only spent about $30 million in 2012, it was the threat that scared congressman, now their are several counterweights. The more the merrier, in my opinion.
Gun control is only one of the many, many, many issues that face that community. Since Bloomberg decided to pour his money into that community on TV ads to elect a candidate, then I hope he’s as willing to spend money or help Kelly get the really necessary stuff for her community. I’m not talking about implementing a ‘stop and frisk’ policy either. Is that next? Will she be expected to get that initiative off the ground, since it’s working so well for him? Sorry, but for me, in this case, it’s ok to reject what may seem to be the perfect as the enemy of the good.
Don’t anyone get me wrong, I’m not saying that Mayor Bloomberg shouldn’t spend his money to help elect pro gun control politicians, that is perfectly find if he choose too, I am just saying I don’t care for the things he say about the President. I’ve never really cared for him.
