Lawmaker calls for half a billion dollars in federal grants to teach sexual abstinence
By Pete Kasperowicz
Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Ill.) on Monday called for the creation of a new federal grant program that would spend half a billion dollars to educate teenagers why they should not have sex before marriage.
In a speech on the House floor, Hultgren cited a Centers for Disease Control report from mid-February that said young adults account for 50 percent of all sexually transmitted disease infections.-/
Amazing how much time these guys waste on stuff that will never get passed. It’s bad enough they take endless days of vacation, they then spend the time they do show up proposing stupid, pointless bills. I’m sick of the lot of them.

I called the six congressmen in the PA districts 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 & 15. Got through right away and they were all very cordial and pleasant (guess not many calls – YET..) I Urged them to support the President and Dems’ plan on the budget/sequester, immigration reform, and gun control legislation. They all stated quite politely that they would pass along my message to the respective congressmen. Three of them asked me for my specific address but I told them that I was calling from out of state but have family residing in PA and in those districts, so all these issues affect me regardless.
I observed that many of them on their website specifically want only residents to email them. They ask for your full name, address, email address, and phone number, and these are mandatory fields. I might just tweet them or write them from scratch instead.
My pleasure and thank YOU WIW for putting together this valuable resource. I have the page bookmarked for future reference. I’m sure I will be needing to contact these congressmen at various times in the coming year and over the next 3 years!
The House Appropriations Committee on Monday introduced a spending bill that assumes the $85 billion sequester goes forward but takes several steps to cushion the Pentagon and other agencies from the blow.
The $982 billion bill would fund the government through the end of fiscal year 2013 on Sept. 30 and prevent a government shutdown after March 27, when a current temporary spending bill runs out.
It assumes that the sequester cuts that began going into effect on March 1 stay in place, but shifts $10.4 billion into the Pentagon’s operations and maintenance account to give the Defense Department more flexibility to prioritize readiness and training programs that were threatened by a full-year continuing resolution.
It also takes several steps to help other agencies from the cuts.
These include provisions aimed at making sure border and nuclear security are maintained, that the Federal Bureau of Investigation maintains staff levels, that security at embassies is increased in the wake of the Benghazi attacks, that the Forest Service has more money to fight wildfires and that federal prisons have enough staff.
Specifically, the bill requires Customs and Border Protection to retain current staffing at existing funding levels, while maintaining 34,000 detention beds for suspected illegal immigrations.
The bill provides $40 million more for wildfires, $363 million more for nuclear security and $129 million more for FBI salaries over current levels, all by shifting money around rather than adding to the overall total.
It also shifts funds for the District of Columbia to pay for the inauguration and gives the Architect of the Capitol flexibility to continue to repair the Capitol Dome, which is crumbling.
The bill includes detailed appropriations for the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments and to fund military construction.
The bill does not contain any new transfer authority for the Pentagon to shift money around in the wake of the sequester, an aide explained.
“The legislation will avoid a government shutdown on March 27th, prioritize DOD and veterans programs, and allow the Pentagon some leeway to do its best with the funding it has,” Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) said in a statement.
In total, the bill includes $518 billion for defense, $2 billion more than President Obama requested for this year.
The bill also extends the current two-year pay freeze for federal workers. Obama has ordered a 0.5 percent increase in federal worker pay after March 27.
I know… But like everything, the poor that need assistance to ameliorate problems, does not have a voice in DC.
Right now, the meme is that these cuts don’t matter.
Funding the military above everything else – 2nd in line – locking people up. Will the GOP ever get over its war and prisons mentality – when prisons becomes a major industry/employer – your country has a problem
Here’s my stupid question. doesn’t this remove the pressure to raise taxed or close loopholes or whatever? I mean, the Republicans would get there military funding but where are the revenue increases? Or maybe this is not enough money to matter? If this doesn’t bass because of Dems or PBO can Republicans yell about them not compromising or about national defense?
The Navy has issued an All Navy message, relaying its initial plans to comply with the sequester, deferring ship deployments and even stopping some ships underway, plus deferring its humanitarian role in Central and South America (the Navy’s humanitarian efforts around the globe are a big part of our national defense).
Here are a few of the fleet-related plans (BFDs), and at the link there’s more of a description of how it’ll affect everything from recruiting to depot maintenance to shows performed by the Blue Angels (a big part of getting taxpayers to support their military) to cutting the real live paychecks of both government and defense contractor personnel.
How’s all this workin’ out for ya, McCain? I’m sure your Daddy the Admiral would be real proud.

NEW YORK — Goldman Sachs and Citigroup have stepped up warnings to shareholders about cyber attacks as the U.S. government prodded banks and government agencies to bolster their defenses.
Online and mobile banking give new points of entry that can be used to disrupt or penetrate operations, the two New York- based firms said last week in annual regulatory filings. The companies said they’re vulnerable to tactics that overload websites to shut off public access, such as assaults that disrupted the nation’s largest lenders late last year.
U.S. banks are speculating that foreign nations, organized crime or terrorists are behind efforts to cripple their websites and warning that costs to keep intruders at bay will rise. President Barack Obama directed the government on Feb. 12 to develop voluntary security standards for companies running vital infrastructure and is pushing Congress to set formal rules.

Note that 8 out of the 10 states voted for Romney in Nov 2012, and the top one (which voted GOP in both 2008 & 2012) did not have a single county that voted for PBO in 2012. As Jodi Kantor would say: Hmmm…….
We, people in my district in Illinois, get rid of Joe Walsh and we get RWNJ Randy Hultgren, a religious extremist, who wasted time and effort today proposing the half billion dollar bill for sex education in public schools. I just contacted him to express my displeasure at his choice of concentration. What is with so many of the Repubs in Congress?—-they are absolutely obsessed with all things sexual. It’s creepy and deserves a study. They spend 239 days on vacay and then waste their precious time in session proposing this kind of nonsense. It’s frustrating beyond belief. I would describe my area as historically Repub, but not whackjob Repub. Obama won here in ’08, narrowly lost here in ’12. The tea party shows up for the primary and elects Walsh and Hultgren and then the majority Repub voters here just vote for anyone with an R by their name. And we end up with nutjobs. A centrist, common sense Dem can be elected here—Dem Melissa Bean represented this area before Walsh. We need to concentrate on these areas that are ripe for the taking and get appealing Dem candidates to fight for these seats. It’s doable in so many areas.
dotster, read “Sex, Mom and God” by Frank Schaeffer, a man who was raised in the religious right culture but saw the light eventually. Also, Max Blumenthal’s “The Republican Gomorrah” brings some interesting information. Many republicans INDEED are obsessed with all things sexual.

The House Appropriations Committee on Monday introduced a spending bill that assumes the $85 billion sequester goes forward but takes several steps to cushion the Pentagon and other agencies from the blow.

That reminds me – the son of a friend of mine is a National Park Service firefighter – controlled burns, forest fires, etc.
Don’t get me started on the fact that he’s finally getting health insurance, which was a problem because of his ‘part time’ status.
My friend told me that he was set to work on some controlled burns, and the sequester furloughed him.
Oh, what do I think of the House bill – it sucks. Protects Republican interests and nothing else.
The defense budget is obscene. In a bill dealing with the sequester, Repubs are giving DoD MORE money than requested?!?!

According to a new survey: The most depressed (as in people being unhappiest) states:
1.West Virginia
2. Tenessee
3. Oklahoma
4. Nevada
5. Missouri
6. Mississippi
7. Michigan
8. Kentucky
9. Indiana
10. Arkansas
Note that 8 out of the 10 states voted for Romney in Nov 2012, and the top one (which voted GOP in both 2008 & 2012) did not have a single county that voted for PBO in 2012. As Jodi Kantor would say: Hmmm…….
They’re depressed and want someoe to blame for it.

Little Johnny’s preschool class went on a field trip to the fire station. The firefighter giving the presentation, held up a smoke detector and asked the class: “Does anyone know what this is?”
Little Johnny’s hand shot up and the firefighter called on him.
Little Johnny replied: “That’s how Mommy knows supper is ready!”
