LovelyPlains and even Amk – you’re the very best! Although I’m a bit late with the white smoke announcing your TOD election.
More noobies soon, and I’ll be back in action a bit after that.
Who’s the new Pope?
Congrats CarolMae! That white smoke still getting to you?
Breathing it in, breathing it in. Have you read my posts. They’re terrible!
It gets easier.
On a clear day, you can see forever! I think in song lyrics.
You are at the top ten. It’s just fun for me. When my name is in lights, then I’ll run ‘n hide. Boy is tweety wrong. My TV is set back a couple hours. The white smoke in photo show a beautiful blue sky. Now my TV show its evening. Tweety made his guesses. Sounds like he wanted Dolan. Isn’t Dolan a rethug? Tamron says its raining, but no one looks wet. Oh the excitement. Hope they’re wearing depends. I’m laughing so hard it’s running down my leg!

I just repeated this to a Catholic friend and she says she spit Pepsi all over her keyboard at work.
Oi, is that a coal powered smoke announcer?
New Pope is Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He’s 76 years old.
At 76 he won’t last long either.
Congrats on breaking news on TOD! Who is our leader this thread? That’s what matters to me!
New Pope will take the name Pope Francis. Apparently, Francis was all about helping the poor, eradicating poverty, etc.
The Landed Gentry are gonna luv him for sure. ha!
Will he instruct his minions to stay the hell out of american politics – that’s my question.
They can pay their own damned taxes, if they want to change American law to reflect their ideology.
Archbishop of Buenos Aires is the new Pope, as Francis I.
The black man didn’t stand a chance..just kidding. The world is not ready for a black pope. The church would have lost members by the mil;ions right here in the USA.
if the world isn’t ready for a black pope, then it’s well past time to have a black pope. or a woman pope. or a married pope! there is nothing to be gained by accepting prejudice and oppression as fundamental cultural realities. sorry to be preachy, but i think america was not supposed to be ready for a black president, either, and look how that turned out!
Actually, they wanted President Obama to be the new pope but he was already occupied with the US Presidency.
The early church had three Black Popes.
Good afternoon! Out in the boonies, the various conservatives are screaming about the sequester cuts. It hasn’t quite sunk in yet that national parks are … federal programs.
Oh, but those are GOOD federal programs. You know, not the ones that go to the poor, who are mostly black—oh, wait, no, the poor are mostly white.
I heard that this morning on Stephanie Miller. A caller said that rural schools were scrambling to cut everything they could in order to pay for school bus service.
The caller made an interesting point: the people still getting Federal money were the corporate farms.
Well, as I make the point, a lot of these areas’ economy revolves around having national parks or other federal programs in the area. Which they don’t get until the lose them.
Oh yes. Lead story in our paper yesterday was about the various campgounds or other areas in the Smokies that will not be open this season. I read some of the comments and most were as you would expect: The Tea Party folks whining and saying it’s all “Obama’s fault blah blah blah……..” Same song, different verse. As norbrook said, just now sinking in that the parks are government jobs. And, of course, we also have Oak Ridge right here–HUGE part of this area’s economy. They’ll catch on when it hits home.
The great point of schadenfreude for me was that a little over two weeks ago, there was a conservative blogger who confidently “showed” how the cuts wouldn’t impact the national park system all that much, and in particular … the Smokies, his favorite area. Oops.
Every national park entrance should have a sign saying “If you don’t like our current hours, call your Congressman. It’s his fault.
Apparently, the new Pope is a Jesuit Pope. Wow.
I wonder if he’s the first Jesuit to be elected pope.
Listening to BBC apparently there are a lot of FIRSTS with this new Pope. First Latin American Pope. First to use the name Francis. There was another first, but I can’t remember it. I think you have the third one LL. I believe he is the first Jesuit. Hopefully, that will be confirmed.
Has a degree in science, can’t recall what exactly the degree is.
Indeed, he’s the first Jesuit.
Jesuit. Strong on education and social justice. Paul Ryan just started crying. Meanwhile, the powers that be at the HS my son teaches at are jumping up and down. It is a Jesuit HS>
Well, I’m moderately hopeful. Let’s see.
Also know as a stauch opponent of gay rights and contraception.
Well, there went that hope. But really, all the cardinals were selected by Benedict and John Paul.
well, so much for hope from this pope.
I believe the Church has been purged completely of liberal-thinkers, at that level. It will take at least a generation, if not more.
The new Pope is the first Jesuit Pope apparently.
So NOW you are admitting your ‘truth’ful place as an ‘oldie’? See, ‘the truth will out’ as THEY say. Though your noobies have done a ‘foine’ job it’s nice to see you, CC.
There sure is a lot of interest in this Pope thing!
Okay……..I’m so not attuned to Rome, I guess…when I saw the smoke and blue sky and “oldie edition” the first thing I thought of was Old Faithful in Yellowstone! I would not stand out in St. Peter’s Square in 38 degrees and rain for someone I do not know. So…is this a good election or a bad one? 76 years old……????? How old was Benedict when he started?
Hope the new Jesuit Pope from Argentina can lead the Catholic Church in a more humane and inclusive direction. Good luck to Pope Francis!
Judith,I think that will be except for women and gay couples. Until women have a leadership, i.e., priestly, role in the Catholic Church, they will never be accorded respect.
Way to go, Noobies! You’re doing great!
And, Chips… How can we ever thank you enough for all you’ve done, for so long, to help us keep our sanity, keep us motivated, and give us endless righteous laughter and thoughtful information…?
Could the new Pope be a new John XXIII? One can only hope.
The new Pope is John VII McCain.

” At a news conference on Tuesday morning in the Capitol, Mr. Ryan was asked why his plan included so many elements that voters appeared to reject in November when they elected Mr. Obama over the Romney-Ryan ticket.
“So the question is,” Mr. Ryan responded, “the election didn’t go our way — believe me I, I know what that feels like — that means we surrender our principles? That means we stop believing in what we believe in?”
But the winner of the national election, and the majority of the Senate SHOULD give up their principles?!?!!
If I could scream out loud at work, I’d be screaming right now.
President Obama said his priority is to prevent an economic slowdown — not to produce a 10-year balanced budget — during a closed-door meeting Wednesday with House Republicans.
Rep. James Lankford (R-Okla.) asked Obama about the budget, questioning whether he would “commit to a 10-year balanced budget” according to Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.).
The new Pope’s parents are Italian but he was born in Argentina. He’s been fighting for the poor all his life but holds conservative views on marriage per usual. Interesting.

The video included above is good sharing material, except that I’m more impressed by Senator Warren’s professionalism than by the conclusion that she ‘slammed’ GOPs. Notice how Sen Warren points out that the SEC hasn’t done all its preparation and brought focus to 4 specific areas of omission, then share the vid far and wide. IMO she is looking quite knowledgeable and impressive in her new role.
Seen any new republican senator as prepared and relevant AND rational sounding as this?

Obama may have to cut Israel trip short due to pope installation haaretz.com/news/diplomacy…— The lovely Plains (@DaRiverZkind) March 13, 2013
Well, it is not an American Pope and whoever is indulging their insane anti-Obama schadenfraude will probably have to find a new hope.
POTUS can do more than one thing at a time. He can visit Israel and not insult anyone in Rome. My globe tells me that Jerusalem and Rome are not that far apart.
Let’s see when the Papal installation is.
The basic thrust of the article was that if the new pope was from the US (which we now know is not the case), it was highly likely that the President would be attending the installation. Since he’s not, the odds are that VP Biden will lead the delegation.
Ed Henry: Fox has learned the Vice President is headed to Rome soon for the installation of Pope Francis, US official -Still working details
Whoa….this new Pope is pretty impressive. He’s a Jesuit Pope, he fights against inequality, he fights for social justice, he fights against economic corruption, he fights against poverty, he’s written extensively about the divide between the rich and the poor and feels the rich should pay their fair share and contribute to the economy, he studied chemistry in college but became a Priest after being drawn to Jesuit teachings about fighting for the poor.
He visits people who suffer from HIV/AIDS and makes sure that society sheds a light on the disease. He is pro-education.
He is of course conservative when it comes to marriage — but that’s par for the course.
Sexual mores are not going to evolve in the hierarchy, probably in our lifetime. But all the other stuff is good, and will set the Church to continue modernization.
Do you know what his position was during the military dictatorship of the 70′s and 80′s?
Thanks, I was afraid of that.
Choosing the name Francis to honor Francis of Assisi seemed like a good sign to me. Also Framcis I believes in science.

6 months post-Benghazi, Obama taps new Libya envoy
President Barack Obama nominated a new ambassador to Libya on Wednesday, filling a post that has been vacant since Chris Stevens was killed in the Sept. 11 Benghazi attack and signaling the United States’ commitment to the North African country as it undergoes a perilous transition from decades of dictatorship.
To replace Stevens, the White House tapped Deborah K. Jones, a career diplomat who has served in Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and the now-shuttered U.S. Embassy in Syria. Jones, who currently works as a scholar at the Middle East Institute in Washington, also has spent time at embassies in Turkey and Ethiopia.
A tweet from the BBC:
There is a real hope that Pope Francis I could change the nature of the Catholic Church, says BBC religious affairs correspondent Robert Pigott. “This is a hugely symbolic step,” he says and reveals an awareness of the size of the Church outside of Europe, he adds.

Want to take a moment to thank LL and all who have volunteered to help the blog chug along……. Truly appreciate the wonderful community that has established on this wonderful forum. I know you have a lot on you plate right now…….. Thanks for taking some of your precious time to help LL!!!
Indeed Lovelyplains, you and amk have done a fantastic job. I’m sorry I missed amk’s first post as blog tyrant because I was holed up in meetings and could only access Twitter via my smartphone. But I’m looking forward many more fun days at TOD with your lovely posts helping out the Admiral Chips!
You set a high standard. Is LL running this thread? It’s running very smooth.
Congratulations Lovely plains, but when posting the president and First Lady’s daily schedule perhaps remembering to also address her properly as you do her husband would be helpful. Just as you did not list the president by his first name, it is rude to have her scheduled as “Michelle Obama”. This is a pro-Obama blog and the First Lady should be treated with more respect.
Sorry missed that. I had pasted a schedule listing released by the WHCA and didn’t realise she was not addressed First Lady, I would have changed it hat I noticed. It was 3:00 a.m. so it slipped and I was stressed about getting the post up properly. I ask for you patience..
Great job lovelyplains! Thanks to you, AMK and LL for volunteering to keep TOD rolling. You are all doing a wonderful job. I am sure our beloved Chips is proud of you.
PBO TO DEMS: SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT GOP FILIBUSTER ABUSE
Obama presses Senate Dems on filibusters
By Steve Benen
The status quo is already farcical. We’ve seen Republicans launch the first-ever filibuster of a cabinet nominee, filibuster a CIA nominee, and they’re set to filibuster President Obama’s Labor Secretary nominee, who hasn’t even been introduced yet. The GOP is filibustering judicial nominees they don’t like and judicial nominees they do like. Republicans have also already vowed to use filibusters to stop the Obama administration from enforcing the law as it relates to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and to stop the president’s nominee to lead the ATF.
With this in mind, President Obama talked to Senate Democrats today, asking them to do something about the ridiculous obstructionism.
I could slap Harry Reid for not taking care of this filibuster problem when he had the chance.
Me too! Me too! Makes me so angry and also sad……sad for PO. I sure hope the Dem’s listened today. Just use the nuclear option and get ‘er done.
second what Tnmtgirl said
Thank you. I got some pushback a few weeks ago. But if appears that PBO has some issues as well with what passed for filibuster reform under Harry’s direction.
It was not just Harry Reid, people! Many other Democratic senators were reluctant to get rid of the filibuster.
Twitter filling up with stories like this:
The media is most dying to know what does this all mean for President Obama. Stay tuned!
Considering the Pope’s views on social justice, it might be more appropriate to ask what this means for Paul Ryan.
I agree – but the MSM won’t care. Karl Rove will tell them to shut up about what it means for Paul Ryan, but go on and on about what it means for PBO even if they’re talking plain donkeyness…
usually my first concern too, but for a different reason, obviously
You’re not alone. Most people (myself incl) – every news event that’s their first concern, for good or bad.
Had obligations this morning, so just now arriving on TOD. I see (and stopped to read) there are already some new Pope jokes, but in case this one has not been posted yet: from Joy Behar: it is starting already, Donald Trump wants to see the Pope’s birth certificate!
Who was the leader of this section? Thanks to lovelyplains, amk and this person…..we seem to be chugging right along.
I’m not the least big surprised that so many people volunteered to help……that is the general attitude I’ve always felt here.
President Obama is really telling ‘em today. They’d better sit up and take notice, both left and right. When he said he wasn’t going to negotiate over the debt limit, he wasn’t kidding. He has totally put everything Ryan tried to do yesterday into the incinerator today! Even talking to the Democrat leaders about filibuster reform!
It was Chips. She stopped by……..

Of course, on Twitter right now “ThingsMoreCharmingThanObama” is trending. WHY?!?!? Who started this crap?
Other than me and FLOTUS, I can’t think of a thing.
PBO just sent a text to let you know that he is reading all TOD comments, including yours….
As long as he doesn’t punish FLOTUS for it, that is fine.
I think he forbid her from reading TOD, esp. comments from amk, japa, yardarm, etc…
I would add MP, but it is not really the truth, and I live by the truth.
Because POTUS is dealing with a bunch of idiots acting like children, that’s why they would put up a hashtag like that.
