These were the words of the second in line to the Presidency as the deadline for the sequester neared: “We should not have to move a third bill before the Senate gets off their ass and begins to do something.”
In a situation which bordered on the surreal, where draconian cuts—which were never intended to come into effect—were, in fact, set to come into effect, Speaker of the House John Boehner, weighted down with the stress of the moment, had what could only be described as a public political psychotic break.
Faced with the pressure of a self-inflicted doomsday deadline—because, don’t forget, the Republican-controlled House voted for the sequester as a mechanism to force a compromise on spending and taxes—and faced with a caucus which increasingly didn’t listen to him, he blamed the Senate for failing to act on two bills passed in the House to avoid the sequester.
Of course, he failed to mention certain salient facts. Firstly, the bills passed in the House were never going to pass the Democratically controlled Senate, and certainly never going to survive a presidential veto. Secondly, and more importantly, those “fixes” were passed in the previous Congress. They were dead letters, as pertinent to the realities of the new Congress as flat-earth theory to modern astrophysics. Mr. Boehner was putting forth a position which he should have known, as Speaker of the House, had no bearing on the current situation. The Senate had to pass the Violence Against Women Act again in the new session because the bill it passed in the previous Congress lapsed due to inaction by the GOP-led House. Not only wouldn’t the Senate pass the House bill on avoiding sequester; it couldn’t; the bills had expired, and new legislation was needed. And, thirdly, all spending bills have to pass the House first. The idea that it was incumbent upon the Senate to do the House’s work for it is something new in American politics. One branch of the legislature has, seemingly, abdicated all responsibility for legislating, merely waiting for the other body to take all the work upon itself.
It’s little secret that Mr. Boehner wished to possess the Speaker’s gavel as he rose in the ranks of Republican leadership, surviving the infighting and occasional purges. A man who came out relatively unscathed from the Tom Delay era had reason to think that bigger things were ahead of him. And in 2010, due to a hissy fit on the part of too many Democrats and “independents”, Mr. Boehner was handed the culmination of his dreams. He would, finally, ascend to the summit of his vision, the Speakership of the House of Representatives.
There was still the inconvenient fact that Barack Obama was President, and that, despite a climate which should have made a Republican takeover of the Senate a sure thing, the GOP base elected candidates which were unelectable in general elections. The Democrats were able to maintain a slim majority in the Senate. The result was a desultory stalemate, pointing to the great battle of 2012.
Surely, with an economy which wasn’t performing optimally, and a Senate battleground map which favored the GOP, a Republican sweep was in the offing. All they had to do was to avoid offending anyone.
But the problem with the modern GOP is that it’s constituted to offend nearly anyone not part of its base. From Todd Akin’s comments on rape to Mitt Romney’s comments on the “47%”, the GOP inflicted upon itself wound upon wound. And its Obama Derangement Syndrome blinded it to the fact that Barack Obama was head and shoulders above its own flawed candidate for President. As in 2010, base Republican voters nominated candidates for Senate who had no chance of winning in a statewide election. Democrats not only held on to their majority in the Senate, but expanded it. And the GOP margin in the House decreased by seven seats. The only reason Republicans held onto control of the House was through gerrymandering; Democrats won the popular vote for the House by more than a million votes. The last election was, all in all, a clear repudiation of Republican ideology.
Poor John Boehner. He kept his great attainment, but it was an empty chalice. He was, if anything, stripped of power. He knows that gerrymandering will work for only so long; the 2014 elections, with the active participation of President Obama’s OFA, are starting to shape up as a replay of 2006. His nemesis was re-elected in authoritative fashion, and his own caucus is fracturing between the plutocratic-but-somewhat-sane faction and the libertarian, Tea Party true believers. Three times in the past three months Mr. Boehner has had to jettison the revered “Hastert Rule”, where a bill could be moved in a GOP House only if it had the assent of the majority of the majority. Nothing of import can move in the House without Nancy Pelosi’s assent, a fact which sticks a dagger further into Mr. Boehner’s heart.
Why did Mr. Boehner pursue the Speakership so doggedly for so many years? Was it just something he felt was owed to him? He’s not very good at his job; his main purpose—to take care of the people who bankroll the Republican Party—is stymied by the Usurper in the White House, who has expertly detailed to the voters exactly for whom the Republicans work. Republican self-identification is at an all time low—an amazing fact, considering all the vitriol aimed at President Obama and the Democrats by the right wing media. The Republican message is dying, and John Boehner is woefully placed to resuscitate it.
The tragedy of John Boehner is that he’s overmatched for the times. He’s playing a role for which he is unprepared. He was counting on a Republican president and a Republican Senate so that he wouldn’t have to do much work. He’s still not doing much work, but now that fact is out in the open, without the cover of the White House and Senate. He’s a farcical character, directing expletives at the Senate, when he has no control over the body he supposedly runs. The problem is that he may not realize that he’s a farce, and can still do some real damage as he attempts to save face; all he cares for is that he not look the fool; but in his attempts to appear relevant, he merely exposes his irrelevancy, meanwhile doing real damage to the country. The sooner he’s sent off to a comfortable retirement, the better for the Republic.

Well, its not that I ‘hate’ hate the product – it’s one of the best in business – it’s their redenculous pricing (easy 150 to 300% mark-up) that bugs me.
For an average user, most of its bells & whistles remain silent.
One time they were pretentious with their minimalist looks (lack of ports) and their “the bestest OS” syndrome. Then the “markets” stepped in and now they are forced to offer what their buyers (read bidness peeps) want (more ports and bow to the M$ evil empire)

Hiya Carol, I use a MacBook Pro and it is the best investment I have ever made. There is no computer comparable to the Mac. None at all. It is the best in the computer industry. I’ve used a PC before, so I have the benefit of dual experience. Apple is the best in terms of computers and laptops.
There are so many things you can do with a Mac. It’s breathtaking. One would think that with its plethora of functions, it would be difficult to operate, but it’s pretty easy. The set up is easy, it protects you from viruses, they send out regular updates and all you have to do is click and you have all their updates in a jiffy. You don’t have to buy or install any virus protection program. Apple takes care of everything for you.
If you don’t want to spend the money for a MacBook Pro, then a Macbook would be the way to go. It’s stronger, faster, easier to use than a PC. Has a great screen with great visibility and clarity.
If you have any more questions, just shoot me a response.

Windows 7 onwards is exactly the same in terms of updates and virus safety. For anyone who is not serious computer savvy (me for one) – changing platforms is not usually so easy. Going from XP to windows 7 was quite a change for me. Friend of mine traded up to a mac & we both like the concept – but he still has “issues” with some things he used to be able to do. Many of his programs (mainly genealogy – as this is our joint love) don’t work on the mac. So anyone changing from windows to mac or vice versa needs to think about it & look at all the issues.
Love the lap top but I really miss the microsoft programs. Big change after 20 years on a PC. Mac is faster safer and has a great screen.
I was looking at their site and they offer Microsoft Word, etc. it’s called Microsoft Office for Mac.
You can purchase Microsoft Office from the App store. I use a MacBook Pro and I have Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook and all that jazz.

Also iCloud keeps your information accessaible to all your devices. I have iPad, iPad mini. IPhone, MacAir and use them interchangeably. Like that I never have to read an instruction book, virus-free, and FAST. I use PC at work and hate it.

CarolMay, I have the lower-end I-Mac which works great for me. I certainly prefer it over the PC in my office at work. But then again I am not technologically savvy to offer an opinion about whether it’s worthy the extra money. I just find it more easier to use. This is my second Mac and I have never once had any virus issues. Most of my buddies who are more tech savvy, and have more powerful Macs, are absolutely convinced that their Macs are worth the extra money they paid for them.

Yes indeed! Like you, I use Turbo tax to do my taxes and the taxes of other family members. I’ve been using Turbo tax since 2001 and I’ve never had any problems with our tax returns.

I am sorry to say, but I reject the desecration of the legacy of Frederick Douglass, one of the greatest African American freedom fighters. There is absolutely no way that Frederick Douglass, who fought so hard and for so long for the abolition of slavery and for citizenship and the right to vote for African Americans, would have endorsed the current teabag dominated Republican party that’s inundated with White Supremacists. Something is terribly wrong with the mentality of these conservative Black Republicans who are grasping at straws in order to make their membership in a racist party palatable. Just because Frederick Douglass was a Republican, at the time when the Republican party supported Black rights, does not mean that Frederick Douglass would be supportive of the current Republican party populated by racists, many of whom were former Democrats. For Black Republicans to fail to recognize that the political parties have changed from what they were before the Jim Crow period is either a result of pure ignorance or total, denial or delusion!

How do we overcome this obstacle of gerrymandered districts???…we casted more than a million more votes….yet we still have a GOP controlled House….
i think that we have to start by building “common sense” coalitions in those gerrymandered districts…we have to find common ground…be it on Health Care…JOBs…infrastructure…education….

Well, the problem is that when we don’t vote, we lose state legislatures in blue states, which then get to draw the districts. As I said in my last post, every election matters. If we turn out, we win. Now it’ll be tougher because of the gerrymandering, but still doable.

I think the main criticism is that like most GOPers, they dont find these type of issues very concerning until it hits them on their door step. I personally have no problem w/ his change of heart. If we want to change laws statewide and federally, then having people like Portman bringing the opposition along is essential. This is also Ohio specific Prettyfoot, alot of D’s will never forget the anti-gay ballot initiative that Karl Rove and Ken Mellman(who is gay) Campaign chair in the 04 election put in, will be hard to forget.Ohio cost Kerry the election,Portman was OMB director in the Bush admin….

I was trying to craft a response, and you nailed it on the head. I’m glad that Sen. Portman is standing by his son. But until he was confronted with the reality of a gay family member, he was fine with the GOP stance on gay rights. Part of being a leader is empathizing with people who are not like you, getting into their skin, understanding their concerns and fears. All too often with Republicans, when they finally do the right thing it’s only because suddenly it affects them personally. You shouldn’t have to have your son come out as gay for you to realize that gay men and women are human beings and deserving of dignity.

Well said, LL! This is exactly why President Obama and Vice President Biden are so different from Dick Cheney and Rob Portman. They changed their position on gay marriage because they “empathized” with people who were not like them and not because members of their immediate family were gay. While it’s commendable that Rob Portman now supports treating gays as equal human beings with the same rights as non gays, It’s doubtful that he would have changed his position on gay rights if his son was not gay. PBO and VP Biden based their change of heart because they “empathized” with gay people. Let’s hope that Portman’s change of heart about gay rights is a result of genuine “empathy” and not just about the fact that his son is gay.

Way back in 2010, when everybody in Washington seemed determined to anoint Representative Paul Ryan as the ultimate Serious, Honest Conservative, I pronounced him a flimflam man. Even then, his proposals were obviously fraudulent: huge cuts in aid to the poor, but even bigger tax cuts for the rich, with all the assertions of fiscal responsibility resting on claims that he would raise trillions of dollars by closing tax loopholes (which he refused to specify) and cutting discretionary spending (in ways he refused to specify).
The good news is that Mr. Ryan’s thoroughly unconvincing policy-wonk act seems, finally, to have worn out its welcome. In 2011, his budget was initially treated with worshipful respect, which faded only slightly as critics pointed out the document’s many absurdities. This time around, quite a few pundits and reporters have greeted his release with the derision it deserves.

‘Why’s that Mick?’ responds Paddy.
‘Well, to be sure,’ explains Mick, ‘where else in the world would a complete stranger come up to you, make idle chat, invite you to dinner and then offer you to spend the night at their house?’
‘Begorrah, ‘ splutters Paddy, ‘did that happen to you?’
‘No,’ says Mick, ‘but it happens to my beautiful sister all the time.

Walking into the pub, Patrick said to the bartender,
“Pour me a stiff one, Sean. I just had another tiff with the little woman.”
“Oh yeah,” said Sean. “And how did this one end?”
“Well I’ll tell ya now. When it was over,” Patrick replied, “herself came to me on her hands and knees, she did.”
