Good West Coast morning Chipsticks & TOD family. Have fun! I’m off to work.
Ummm….did I mention that Chelsea CRUSHED Man United today and are onwards to the semi-final? Did I mention that my Blues are the BEST team ever? Did I mention that my Chelsea boys kicked Man United’s ass and would have done more damage but they didn’t want Man United players crying for their mommies.
p.s. Yes Sam Kass, you are HAWT and SPICY!
Chiming in! g’day y’all! Roll em, roll em, roll em!
Almost time for the First Family.
How is the weather?
That is so cool. It had me fool for a minute. I was thinking what in the world is POTUS going to say?
People are lining up to see the First Family.
so here you are! It took me so long to reply to a comment on the last thread, I missed the train leaving the station. Now that I think back, I could have made that reply in ten words or less, not the oratory of a wordsmith.
Good Morning Chips and my TOD Family. I hope everyone will have a beautiful day today.
Thanks again Chips for this beautiful space. (((( Lots of Loving Hugs to you and our First Family.))))HZ
How many of you remember going to DC to the Easter Egg Roll during the 1940s when you were children? I remember but we were across the street in the park. I always got to wear my easter outfit and thought it was part of my birthday celebration. It was a good way to forget about the war.
Nice memories, sonji. Easter outfits always made me feel like a millions bucks. But we were in NY in those days.
One of the benefits of growing up in Baltimore! Just a short school bus ride to DC.
I made it to this day now if I can survive renewing my drivers license I can celebrate my 70th birthday today.
Everyone have a great Easter Monday.
Happy Birthday sonjiaduncan! You’ll do fine at the dmv. My fear was always the eye test.
My reply disappeared.
I had a great day passed the vision test, shopping, huge crab cake lunch, Now a little time on the blog.
Happy 70th to YOU! Go get that license, you have driving years left, for sure!
I traveled from one end of this country to another for 30 years. Now I will only drive if I really must help out. Love being 70 I can get away with doing what I want.
Happy 70th Birthday Sonji, welcome to the 70′s club. Have a wonderful Day.
Thank you Roberta I am going to enjoy 70.
I will enjoy being 70.
Thank you Roberta, Great club to be in.
Happy Birthday, Sonjia!
thank you, my daughter and I were talking about our DC meet up today. Good memories.
Happy Birthday, sonjiaduncan!

Sanchez did a good job, I hope the media won’t start a controversy, did she sing live or not.
definitely Live she has a beautiful voice.
She was a finalist on American idol last year. She is dynamite!
Well at least MSNBC and CNN are airing the first family on the balcony and PBO’s introduction of the Easter Bunny and the egg roll festivities. FOX has two people screaming about immigration. If it was up to them, they would probably ban the Easter bunny.

POTUS is reading alone this day. Well there is Bo helping.
I am howling with laughter watching Pres. Obama read ‘Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!’
A brief explanation for the following tweet. It is not meant to be sacreligious of meant in any kind of a derogatory way. But considering we know that sexual orientation is not a choice made but rather something one is born with, this has, for some time, been something I have thought about? Not so much the question asked, but rather, if the first statement is supposed to be accurate, why is being gay so anti-God as many on the right contend?
I'm confused. Cardinal Dolan of NY states that God created gays in His own image. Is the Cardinal saying God is gay?— john miller (@deaconmill) April 01, 2013
This tweet really doesn’t understand the theology of “Image of God”. What the theological statement is saying is that every person is north with the Divine spark of Life within them, and neither gays nor any person is excluded. One’s biological predispositions have nothing to do with this teaching. Every person has equal dignity and worth, by birthright, not by sexual orientation.
Which, in fact, brings into play the question I bring up in my comment. The tweet itself is intentionally being facetious to create the discussion which you bring out.
The auto-correct messed this up. “Every person is born with the Divine Spark of Life within them….”
Perhaps more appropriate language for this theological principle is that every person is born with the Divine Indwelling and is the source of our dignity and personhood and innate worth.
Lovely and perfect response.

NANCY BENAC | April 1, 2013 11:38 AM EST | AP
WASHINGTON — A photo of the Obamas hugging that was released on Election Day has become the world’s most popular tweet on Twitter. A video of Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech, dressed up with charts and graphs, is huge on YouTube. A playful picture of the president cavorting with a 3-year-old in a Spiderman costume is a favorite online.
It’s all courtesy of the Obama image machine, casting the president as commanding and compassionate. In this world, Obama’s family is always photogenic, first dog Bo is always well-behaved and the vegetables in the South Lawn kitchen garden always seem succulent.
The Obama White House is generating its own content like no president before. At the same time, it is limiting press access in ways that past administrations wouldn’t have dared.
Don’t need to cast him as commanding and compassionate. That just happens to be what he is. What is it with these people. Same with the other comments.
“Casting as the president as compassionate”
lolololololololol got a good laugh out of this little paragraph. Haters gon hate!
That’s like something you’d read at Fox Nation. Wasn’t Benac the Hillary supporter in 2007/08? Sounds like she still hasn’t got over it.
I was about to say that this article is just so ridiculous and snarky.
So kenyan muslin is a mind bender over teh innernetz ?
Cool. I’ll take it.
Ha, me too!!
They are so jealous because he is………..
Standing in the hall of fame
And the world’s gonna know his name.
If the MSM would give him fair and complete coverage on the evening news, they would have all the access they think they want, and this action would not be necessary. Does anyone else remember how EVERY NIGHT the news had a picture of GWB sitting in those ugly blue and gold chairs shaking hands with whoever came to the White House every day, and EVERY Sunday night was a video of him flying home in Marine One from Camp David or Crawford holding Barney and doing a sloppy semi-salute? I remember.
Now if the President’s meeting is on the news, all we see is the reporter’s mug and hear the reporter’s words. We don’t see the President. I have written all three networks and reminded them of this…..so tired of them!

OUTSTANDING!!!!! 100 Percent of Urban Prep Seniors College-Bound nbcchicago.com/news/local/urb… via @nbcchicago— Alycee (@jazziz2) April 01, 2013
But I thought all charter schools were EVIL, especially in Chicago!!!
I have close friends who are Chicago teachers – one teaches in a low to middle class grade school right outside of the Hyde Park neighborhood, and another works for a charter high school. They are both dedicated, ridiculously hard-working and I love and admire them both for the great work they do. Any student would be privileged to have these people as teachers.
I DO NOT want to see privatized education. In my Perfect World, all public schools would be havens of learning. But I also see more art and music integrated into the curriculum in some charter schools, and they can be laboratories for new methods and analysis of the effectiveness of those new methods. It’s just not a black and white issue, and yet that’s how it is portrayed in Chicago.
There needs to be a good mix. I see no reason why public schools can’t be given the same resources and criteria to succeed as some charter schools. I have nothing against them, as a very close relative heads the charter school initiative in Chicago and you won’t meet a more dedicated person in the field. However, until/unless we see some of the failure of charter school, folks think they are inherently better than a public education. Also, until charter schools are mandated to open their doors to every child, the comparisons are apples and oranges.
I think teachers should be commended, well compensated, and held in the highest of esteem for just choosing that profession. I don’t think a teacher in charter school is anymore committed than one in public school. I don’t think a teacher accepting a job in a charter school should be looked at as selling out for accepting lower pay and no union representation. In a perfect world, there should be no need for a charter school. Best practices from both entities should be used in the public school setting. There is no reason for fine arts to be missing from public schools, yet available in charter schools. We are setting up, ‘charter schools only’ drinking fountains and a whole new meaning to ‘separate but equal’.
I agree with everything you said – completely. I wish public schools were the true No. 1 priority of American politics. Everything good would flow from that. And I am terrified of the tipping point where we privatize education – American’s greatness came from a commitment to education, that we have lost over the last 30 years. Chicago education is complicated, and both sides blame the other completely for any and all failures. Therein lies the problem – the kids come last in the pissing match between CPS and the CTU.
yep, I’d bet anything the kids could do a better job, if the adults just get out of their way. These folks are just so ego driven.
You can’t get past the hyperbole to even have a constructive discussion and debate. It’s outrageous.
All charter schools aren’t evil. It’s the management of some of the majority of them, at least in Philadelphia, that put profit over student education. They DON’T except all students, and often don’t do better than the ‘regular’ public schools that they replace. The treatment of children who receive special education services is appalling. The schools that have art and music are VERY selective of the students they take and that is NOT how public schooling is supposed to work. At this point, it IS private education at public expense.
If the charter schools operate at the expense of the public schools, and don’t do a better job, then there’s a problem. That is what is happening in Philadelphia. Plus, the SDP (School District of Philadelphia) claims to be broke, yet has expanded charters with organizations who have NOT met academic standards for $100+ millions dollars. Where does that kind of money come from if the SDP is supposed to be bleeding money and closing elementary, middle and high schools?
There’s a ‘lottery’ in Chicago, I think. But I’m not sure if that lottery is open to any and all students, or just after they reach some particular level in testing.
I see my friends with her first graders outside of Hyde Park, where she works all summer with these kids to grow their own fruits and vegetables (in addition to the other great teaching she does). I see my other friend where the high school kids in the charter school don’t just get decent arts education, but an integration of the use of the arts in other subjects. History, social studies and English are obvious; but when a kid sees that music is math, everyone benefits. But there are inherent abuses built into charter school programs, where a school board can make damn near any (or no) regulations concerning the programs. In Chicago, there is so much blame to go around, and no one — I mean NO ONE — accepts responsibility for how dismal our city schools are. I am deathly afraid of the path of privatization of our schools, but I have seen some good come out of some charter schools. That being said, I’d much prefer that public schools be up to the task of educating each and every American child adequately.
57andfemale, I understand everything that you are saying. All that and more can be done in public schools. I know because I experienced it. The music is math is music especially. We planted gardens and took trips to Broadway. As for the lottery, that’s just wrong on all kinds of levels. We went thru that here. What a mess. One charter school gave out stars to the students who made the lottery, as if the kids who didn’t were somehow less deserving. UUGGHGHHHHH!!
It’s just a horrid mess. And all I see is extremism on both sides. I think you summed up this entire issue perfectly: everything that is done in the charter schools can (and should) be done in the public schools. The bureaucracy is so ingrained in Chicago (and I daresay many other larger school systems) that there appears to be no room for pilot programs to see if new methods can be more effective, and get them implemented. The teachers have precious little freedom to adapt and teach to their particular students at their particular schools.
In the span of my lifetime, I have seen the American schools fall from being the best in the world, to schools that give degrees to students who don’t know the very basics of learning or the very minimum of facts they need to be functioning, contributing citizens. It is astounding to me.
I think 57 was being sarcastic with the ‘charter schools being evil’. The example she used was of the 100% college acceptance rate for AA young men who attended a charter school in one of the most failing communities in the city of Chicago. This is their 3rd or 4th year in existence and have so far kept a very impressive 100% graduation and advancement to higher education rate. Her example was of the irony displayed by some about charter schools, in light of this accomplishment.
I agree with your post and the very same thing is playing out here in Chicago. Those inadequate resources suddenly become available for charter school initiatives.
One of those prep schools is in my old neighborhood where I went to High School.
Kudos to them, and any progress and positive among our young men is to be commended. That neighborhood especially, is now a community teeming with under-served, under-performing, and under anything else you can name. Too bad that the other young men from that neighborhood are not privy to the same resources.
That’s not entirely true cookemom. Even as far back as my high school days there were schools in the somewhat depressed areas that were very successful. For the most part they were ‘closed campus’s, and religious institutions whose common denominator was they were not co-ed. As I remember, the kids that went to those non co-ed schools did a lot better than those of us in co-ed schools.
I wasn’t necessarily referring to the underserved as economical. I don’t think anything we experienced as kids can compare to the emotional and social ills those kids are enduring everyday. As for gender based schooling, maybe now with more info available, that may be a better idea than in my day.
Girls were pushed into home economics, teaching, secretarial, telephone company operators, and domestic activity for their future. They were not encouraged to pursue the sciences, math, nor engineering. Competitive sports were out of the question.
Success is more than a grade. Somehow a boy getting an A in physics probably got him further in life, than a girl with an A in underwater sea pottery. Of course there were exceptions and some girls went on to be very successful in male dominated fields, but it wasn’t because they were welcome. So, I agree they may have done better, but by what measure?
Pure survival back in the day.
Cookemom, wow. That’s a shame. I went to a public all girls high school that had AP physics, biology and chemistry, Spanish, French, Italian, Latin and Russian, art and music. English literature and robotics. And 95+% of our girls went on to college. The remainder went in the military. And a few of my girlfriends who went in the service, completed their college degrees or took college courses while serving.
It’s a damn shame that we, as a country, have somehow allowed our public education system to fall into such disarray. WE CAN and MUST DO BETTER!!!
yardarm. I am right there with you. Even as I’m what amk would probably call a “wimmin’s libber” I am TOTALLY in favor of single-sex education. I think it allows both boys and girls to focus on their education, not who to flirt with. I went to a public all-girls high school. There was plenty of time for that before school, after school and on weekends. We had combined orchestras, plays, sports teams, etc. But the education was single sex and the results were evident. Girls considered fields they may have never gotten exposure to.

I also noticed that this is the BIG NEWS of the Easter Egg Roll, the ONLY NEWS, in fact. It’s the only thing the “press” is tweeting about the event. So typical. So juvenile. They’re haha-ing that hot shot president is bad at something—-now bad at basketball, they’re gleefully reporting. Geez.
they complain about having no access to PBO yet when they do…these are the types of articles/comments are made…
The DC Town/Village idiots are orgasmically getting their pleasure writing about…….this? Hmm? How seriously wicked is their racial animus towards this president?
That they must always find a Worst case scenario to make a scene? For the Love of God, they don’t even try to hide it any more.
Mrs. Greenspan just featured the missed basketball shots in the intro to her lame show.
If it Bleeds for POTUS, the fools will lede with it…..especially on this particular POTUS. It never fails.
Oh Wow!!!!! Are you kidding me? That is such horrible news, 2 for 22. Let me see if the evening news open up with this big story.
Please, we shouldn’t pay these idiots any attention. It is no big deal that POTUS didn’t have a good day shooting basketball.
No shit! And the world stopped rotating on it’s axis too. Sheesh. I wonder if PBO put any socks on this morning? ;-(
These people are such fools. Obama is cool because he just is. It is not one thing. His authenticity is a driving reason behind his cool factor and having a bad day on the court is as authentic as you get. Ask Jordan, Lebron or Kobe matter of fact ask anyone who plays basketball. The media still does not get it.

Oops…..Would they have cared
Reading about Mrs. Greenspan’s segment on PBO’s basketball shots makes me feel dirty. If the mainstream media and the jackals ever wanted to know exactly why they are so loathed by the masses, this non story would be a perfect example why. With all the domestic GOP sabotage and drama around the world, the focus is on how many hoops President Obama missed. Really? The media and the GOP are like two peas in a pod. Constantly looking for some negative angle to any story about President Obama. Constantly looking for the next outrage du jour. Because there always has to be another outrage waiting in the hopper. This crap says more about them then it does about PBO. smdh

Way to go, Hopefruit!
Girlie is on FIYAH!!
So, let me get this straight: While N. Korea is threatening to nuke everything it can nuke (not that it really can, as all intelligence indicates it hasn’t been able to weaponize its nukes), our media focuses on basketball game.
I’m with ya LL. See my comment above. It is really embarrassing what passes for journalism these days.
If PBO brought peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis, and brought peace to the Koreas, it would pale against the fun of pointing out PBO’s ‘failures’ on the basketball court.
We have sunk to a pathetic low I never thought I would live to see.
How’s Mrs. LL? How are you holding up?
Oh, Mrs. LL is thoroughly sick of protein drinks. She’s taking an extra day off to see if she can get on track with that. I am thankfully back at work. I was bouncing off the walls by yesterday.
Glad you’re back at work and Mrs. LL is on her way to normalcy.
Veterans living in small towns or remote rural areas could receive federal grants to help them travel to the doctor, under new rules to be issued Tuesday.
The Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) rules could provide up to $50,000 to state agencies and veteran organizations to offer transportation to service members living in “highly rural” areas.
The regulations, which will become final next month, allow only one grant per fiscal year for each sparsely populated area — defined as having a population less than seven people per square mile.
The VA said that it received several comments from the public about the rule’s narrow provisions, but the agency argued it was tightly bound by the language set by Congress.
The grants will be given to state-level veterans affairs agencies and nonprofit organizations to provide free rides to veterans in need of medical care.

Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United.
Just keeping everyone informed.
Thanks for that PSA, LL. Am sure Ms Chips will reward you, appropriately
Working that elliptical, everyday?
No, I’ve been slacking. Hope to get it done today after work, after I take the missus for a walk. She has to get 30 minutes of exercise a day to minimize the risk of blood clots.
Very good!! Yes, those daily walks for her are essential. Take care, friend.
Good afternoon TOD family and our wonderful Ms Chips! And all you wonderful blog try ants in training. I am in awe of all your gifts to us.
I am in Las Vegas today to be with a friend whose husband is having open heart surgery. He is having a new type of laser surgery. Her family wasn’t able to be here so another friend and I drove down.
I real love the beauty of the country we drive thru, but the bigotry and hatred for the President drives me crazy. It is maddening all the signs we see, all the stickers on the cars. These people really don’t understand our country.
It is so beautiful to see the pictures of the first family on Easter Sunday and today.
Thank you all for being here on this wonderful blog that keeps me sane in the midst of insanity.

Attention all you folks who question PBO’s coolness factor when shooting the pill.
Cool would be had he made them all, as in, ‘wasn’t that cool? He made all the shots’.
Swag, on the other hand, is ever present, regardless of the outcome, as in, ‘Dang he only hit 2, but DAAAAANG!’
Get with the times people, cool has nothing to do with the actual tossing of the rock.
@mckaycoppins Better question: Why do certain "journalists" feel so threatened by the mere fact that Barack Obama is President?— (@aspirational12) April 01, 2013
McCaycoppins is angry about the Twitter pushback he’s getting. They can’t dish it but they can’t take it.
#ObamaAprilFools Misses BB shots knowing that #NEWSTAINERS like Ms Greenspan, the BuzzBoys, etc., #ODS would erupt. cc @davidaxelrod @vj44— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) April 01, 2013
