I remember our former Congressman (a bluedog) was hyper conscious about this issue. Never discussed campaign issues with his staff. Never used his business office to talk about his campaign and was always concerned about being recorded. That’s how all members of Congress are supposed to be, although a few, like McConnell, believe they are above the law and above all accountability.

Late good West Coast morning, Obots!

A completely off-topic observation, but I never imagined becoming so attached to so many of my patrons.

One of my Thursday regulars just visited with me. She had surgery on her nose on Monday, and her face looked like she’d been in a fight. I felt so badly for her.

Community is so important. It is, in the end, one of the few things that makes human life possible.

Funny about that, UT. There’s supposed to be some clearly defined pocket called ‘the left’ into which everyone fits. But the president’s voting base is large, diverse and flexible. We don’t throw our president under the bus because we don’t all agree with one issue.

I am absolutely disgusted with the left. They truly have proven they can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. The past week, they’ve focused their entire energy on this whole Social Security debate and completely ignored the fight to help advance sensible gun laws. If they had even put half as much energy into that fight, it might be an easier row to hoe for the Obama Administration. But they’re quiet.

I don’t want to hear that they care about human life. They don’t. Grandma is not going to die because of this fallacy, bogeyman argument they are pushing today. But I can tell you that, at some point today, a child will be struck down by a bullet and won’t ever have the chance to collect Social Security.

I think this week proves, without a shadow of the doubt, the left is no better than the right. They really don’t care about the problems facing this nation – only misrepresenting ideas and using loud noises to drown out true discussion. But it’s been this way since the beginning. Even during the healthcare debate, they didn’t rally … they sat on their asses and then whined when the public option was dropped.

Let’s concede the left is useless. They want to blame Obama for not getting anything done? They get nothing done because they don’t organize and they don’t fight for extremely important issues – they can only focus on a handful of minor issues at a time and even then, what good does do?

And I bet you if these gun reforms fail, the first person they’ll blame is Obama without a hint of irony.

    • April 11, 2013 at 3:32 pm

“I don’t want to hear that they care about human life. They don’t. Grandma is not going to die because of this fallacy, bogeyman argument they are pushing today. The left is always fighting the wrong battles at the wrong time. All of the screaming about something in the President’s budget, yet they have nothing to say about the devastating effects the sequester will have on seniors, women, children the middle class and poor. Something much worse than chained CPI. Then there is the gun legislation happening right now, immigration coming up, and so much more they could help with by pushing Congress. As for the old fool Bernie Sanders, he must have forgotten that it is HIS job, not the President’s to write and pass a budget.

      • 67 jackiegrumbacher
        April 11, 2013 at 5:06 pm

Debz, you summed it up beautifully. Every Democrat in the country should be screaming about the sequester but Dem congressmen remain silent and voters remain apathetic to calls to push their reps on this issue. This senseless piece of vitriol known as the sequester was foisted on people by the petty and vengeful R’s and is causing more hardship across the country than anything chained CPI could ever do. And here we have a life and death issue on gun control and instead of pressuring on that, we’re supposed to write petitions to the president. It’s as if some on the left have taken brain draining pills and have lost their ability to see past their noses. When PBO told us at his Inauguration that we have a responsibility as citizens, he should have said that knowing what you’re talking about is a prerequisite for shouting about it. People have not taken the time to understand the proposals on SS and Medicare, but they feel qualified to take one piece and make a mountain out of it. I’m really fed up with it today.

        • 68 debz
          April 11, 2013 at 5:24 pm

I think we are all fed up with this today. As DI said, they are not doing any of this out of concern for human life. I watched FLOTUS, speech in Chicago this morning and have been crying all day because of the children who have been lost. if the loud left needs something to scream about it should be all the young lives ended by gun violence.

The initiative will include training and counseling on gay issues, along with participation in public service announcements.

People who don’t understand rap/hip-hop or the basic tenets of grammar/english language should really shut up instead of polluting the air with their ignorance.

WASHINGTON — GOP lawmakers have subpoenaed the private emails of Labor secretary-nominee Thomas Perez, a possible sticking point ahead of his Senate confirmation hearing next week.

The subpoena to the Justice Department is part of an investigation into an agreement Perez brokered last year in his capacity as the nation’s top civil rights enforcer. In the deal, Perez convinced the city of St. Paul, Minn., to drop a lending discrimination lawsuit. In exchange, the Justice Department declined to join two whistleblower cases against the city.

Perez has already turned over hundreds of official documents to lawmakers investigating the arrangement. But Republicans say at least one email from his personal account was not provided. Lawmakers now want any personal emails dealing with official business.

A Justice spokeswoman says the subpoena is being reviewed.

Why do they get to look at his personal e-mails ?

WASHINGTON — A day after the Senate voted to begin debate on new gun control measures, the Supreme Court is expected to consider a new appeal aimed at loosening state restrictions on firearms.

The justices are meeting in private Friday to discuss adding new cases for the term that begins in the fall. Among them is an appeal of a federal court ruling that upheld New York’s strict licensing scheme for carrying concealed weapons in public.

The National Rifle Association and 20 states are backing an appeal by five New York residents who claim that the state law violates their constitutional gun rights. The challenge comes nearly five years after a landmark Supreme Court decision in favor of gun rights – and four months after a gunman killed 20 children and six adults in Newtown, Conn.

The court could say as early as Monday whether it will hear the case.

David Gregory is upset about the parking situation on his street, and recently made his feelings known in a very public fashion.

The D.C. Design House, a month-long exhibition, is set up in Gregory’s neighborhood this year. The Washington Post’s Reliable Source blog reported on Thursday that Gregory is not happy about visitors parking on his street and in front of his home.

He reportedly went over to the Design House, “waving his arms and complaining” on the front lawn, in front of several designers and guests. Witnesses claimed that Gregory warned the organizers that he “knows all the politicians in town” — he denied saying that — and one designer called the display “very public and immature.”

When asked about the incident, Gregory said, “There are a lot of people clogging up our streets.” He denied “blowing up,” but admitted that he went “over there to complain.” He said that he has contacted the Advisory Neighborhood Commission about the situation.

For their part, the Design House organizers said that they notified neighbors about the exhibition in advance, and made parking accommodations for visitors.

When I first saw the picture at the top of the page, I almost thought I saw my father. The hat and insignia and crosses were so familiar to me. My father was a chaplain during WWII in the Army Air Corps. He loved doing it, and my sister and who were small, loved his assistants, who became part of our family. That picture brought back many warm and wonderful memories. My sister and I substituted for daughters and little sisters sometimes.

Thanks for pointing that out, LP, but I’m not reading that ridiculous article, if it’s implying that furloughed employees will run to foreign entities to recoup their “big bucks,” because they’re mad at lawmakers or for whatever reason. If that were the case, federal retirees – who also take a pay cut to retire – would all be lining up with their passports or making sure they have free international calling, because many of them have security clearances until the day they retire, and stuff to “sell.” There’s an investigatory process well before you get the security clearance, to judge whether or not you should get it – and keep it, until you’re no longer employed by the government. Dumb premise written by dumbass thinkers, which – again – does a disservice to federal government workers.
