Inside the administration, he operates as Mr. Obama’s fixer.
“He puts fires out,” said Tom Daschle, who employed Mr. Rouse as a chief of staff when he was the Senate Democratic leader. “He’s the primary personnel negotiator. There’s constant friction, and he reduces the friction. There’s a constant need for somebody to do something for which there is no job description. He is that person.”….When Republicans rose up against the appointment of Elizabeth Warren, a Harvard professor, to oversee a new consumer protection agency, Mr. Rouse helped devise a strategy that ended with the president appointing Ms. Warren as a top-level adviser — a position that needed no Senate confirmation.

Obama noted that Jewell studied engineering, worked il fields of Oklahoma and Colorado, and also has banking experience; she then turned REI into “one of America’s most successful and environmentally conscious companies.”
Jewell also has a love of the great outdoors, Obama said, joking that “I’m willing to bet that she’ll be the first secretary of the Interior who frequently hikes Mailbox Peak in her native Washington state, and who once spent a month climbing mountains in Antarctica — which is just not something I think of doing.”
As the crowd laughed, Obama said, “it seems like it’d be cold, and I was born in Hawaii.”

GOP Wants to Use This Bizarre Case to Scuttle Obama’s Most Progressive Cabinet Nominee, Thomas Perez for Labor Sec.motherjones.com/politics/2013/…

Prior to joining the Justice Department, Perez was secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, which enforces workplace safety laws and wage-and- hour regulations as well as consumer-protection laws.
“Given his background, this may be about beefing up the wage and hour division at labor, which is incredibly important in terms of pushing back against wage theft and helping to implement immigration reform,” said Bernstein, senior fellow at the Center on Budget & Policy Priorities, a non-profit group in Washington.
David Simas served as Director of Opinion Research for Obama’s re-election, coordinating the campaign’s extensive focus group and polling operation, which aides later revealed was generations ahead of what Mitt Romney’s campaign was capable of. According to a White House official, his new title will be Assistant to the President and Deputy Senior Advisor for Communications and Strategy.
On December 14th, the president had a light schedule for the day. It was “quiet.” These are the worst days for schedulers. The words “it’s quiet” always have the jinx hanging heavy over it.
Word came early in the day of a school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The death toll rose steadily throughout the day: two staff members, then ten people, including some students, and then 20. Ultimately, the horrific news: 26 dead, 20 of them young children……Then there were more decisions: whether the president should go to Connecticut, whether it was even possible to mobilize his massive security detail that quickly, and whether to go now or when? Orchestrating the storm of logistics was Danielle Crutchfield, the president’s scheduler.
Ask a reporter about Denis McDonough, President Obama’s new chief of staff, and there’s a good chance you’ll get an eye roll followed by a story about being on the wrong side of a tongue lashing. Though McDonough is said to have mellowed over the years, many Washington journalists can trade stories about his caustic broadsides and occasional bullying tactics in defense of the president he serves.
Yet ask almost anyone who works with McDonough, and the response is likely to be 180 degrees in the other direction: an effusive—even gooey—paean to his decency, civility, small gestures of kindness, inclusiveness, and collegiality. Indeed, one of the chief assets that McDonough brings to his new job is a reputation—at least internally—for deft people skills.
