Rise and Shine…profiles of the team pt.1

Pete Rouse

Inside the administration, he operates as Mr. Obama’s fixer.

“He puts fires out,” said Tom Daschle, who employed Mr. Rouse as a chief of staff when he was the Senate Democratic leader. “He’s the primary personnel negotiator. There’s constant friction, and he reduces the friction. There’s a constant need for somebody to do something for which there is no job description. He is that person.”….When Republicans rose up against the appointment of Elizabeth Warren, a Harvard professor, to oversee a new consumer protection agency, Mr. Rouse helped devise a strategy that ended with the president appointing Ms. Warren as a top-level adviser — a position that needed no Senate confirmation.

Obama noted that Jewell studied engineering, worked il fields of Oklahoma and Colorado, and also has banking experience; she then turned REI into “one of America’s most successful and environmentally conscious companies.”

Jewell also has a love of the great outdoors, Obama said, joking that “I’m willing to bet that she’ll be the first secretary of the Interior who frequently hikes Mailbox Peak in her native Washington state, and who once spent a month climbing mountains in Antarctica — which is just not something I think of doing.”

As the crowd laughed, Obama said, “it seems like it’d be cold, and I was born in Hawaii.”

Prior to joining the Justice Department, Perez was secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, which enforces workplace safety laws and wage-and- hour regulations as well as consumer-protection laws.

“Given his background, this may be about beefing up the wage and hour division at labor, which is incredibly important in terms of pushing back against wage theft and helping to implement immigration reform,” said Bernstein, senior fellow at the Center on Budget & Policy Priorities, a non-profit group in Washington.

David Simas served as Director of Opinion Research for Obama’s re-election, coordinating the campaign’s extensive focus group and polling operation, which aides later revealed was generations ahead of what Mitt Romney’s campaign was capable of. According to a White House official, his new title will be Assistant to the President and Deputy Senior Advisor for Communications and Strategy.

*****

Danielle Crutchfield

64

33

On December 14th, the president had a light schedule for the day. It was “quiet.” These are the worst days for schedulers.  The words “it’s quiet” always have the jinx hanging heavy over it.

Word came early in the day of a school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The death toll rose steadily throughout the day: two staff members, then ten people, including some students, and then 20. Ultimately, the horrific news: 26 dead, 20 of them young children……Then there were more decisions: whether the president should go to Connecticut, whether it was even possible to mobilize his massive security detail that quickly, and whether to go now or when?  Orchestrating the storm of logistics was Danielle Crutchfield, the president’s scheduler.

*****

Denis McDonough

Denis McDonough

20

Ask a reporter about Denis McDonough, President Obama’s new chief of staff, and there’s a good chance you’ll get an eye roll followed by a story about being on the wrong side of a tongue lashing. Though McDonough is said to have mellowed over the years, many Washington journalists can trade stories about his caustic broadsides and occasional bullying tactics in defense of the president he serves.

Yet ask almost anyone who works with McDonough, and the response is likely to be 180 degrees in the other direction: an effusive—even gooey—paean to his decency, civility, small gestures of kindness, inclusiveness, and collegiality. Indeed, one of the chief assets that McDonough brings to his new job is a reputation—at least internally—for deft people skills.

Happy Sunday to you, CC, mi deah! :)

‘I might even get around to replying to emails/messages ’ – The Chipadees having fallen into their blogging roles so well may be a sign you should ‘hire’ a secretary or three to handle the emails/messages, then you won’t need to worry about getting ‘a round tuit’. ;) ;) After all, we have always known (AND APPRECIATED THE FACT THAT) you were doing the job of 10 men in your outstanding efforts here at TOD village!
      .
      .
Incidentally, I was kidding about the secretaries, BUT what do you want to bet that the thought YOU wouldn’t be the ONLY one reading the mail would drastically cut down on the volume you receive. ;) /Yeah, I’m  sometimes/

    • 36 dotster3
      April 14, 2013 at 9:15 am

The proof will be in the pudding—-we shall see what we end up with—–after the Repubs get done adding amendments etc. Concerning that known anti-gun legislators said they only voted to allow debate because they were assured they could introduce (gun law weakening) amendments.

      • 37 hopefruit2
        April 14, 2013 at 9:16 am

I don’t think PBO will sign a worthless bill.

      • 38 isonprize
        April 14, 2013 at 12:53 pm

Given a choice between no bill at all and this bill, I choose this bill. As I’ve said before, and will continue to say, we must start somewhere. And this is a good a place as any. Besides, amendments can go both ways.

        …endless supply of paint…

  13. 39 hopefruit2
    April 14, 2013 at 9:05 am

So I’m seeing on my Twitter TL that MSNBC’s “Up with Steve Kormacki” has Jerry Nadler spewing PL nonsense about PBO running away from the stimulus/Obamacare in 2010, and cutting SS.

The important question is not what Jerry Nadler says, but whether his false claims are corrected with facts or whether he’s allowed to get away with spewing falsehoods without any pushback whatsoever. If these shows simply give folks with Obama-related grievances to come on and say whatever they want, then these shows (and their hosts) are part of the problem – a HUGE part of it.

  14. 40 Bill
    April 14, 2013 at 9:19 am

Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) in a very manic interview told David Gregory he has a concealed gun permit, and it should be honored in all 50 states. I wish I could understand why the MSM takes him seriously.

    • 41 hopefruit2
      April 14, 2013 at 9:29 am

The MSM takes anyone with an R next to their name seriously. “R” means “I have pledged privately or publicly to operate at the behest of corporations, gun lobbyists, banks, big oil and insurance & pharmaceutical companies, and put these entities before the voters who put me in office.”

      • 42 jackiegrumbacher
        April 14, 2013 at 9:38 am

Perfect summary, HF. They live by the motto, “Corporations and the rich come first.” No one else matters or even registers on their radar, except, of course, when they have to lie to get votes. The real question is why voters are dumb enough to re-elect people who hold them in concept.

Goooooooooood Morning everyone…..great profiles of PBOs new team….thanks so much LP

I have a problem with concealed weapons….and in fact carrying weapons everywhere…this is not the wild west..

.we have this concern about smoking in public because of the health risk it provides…yet a concealed weapon is OK….

      this is lunacy….

      • 44 Bill
        April 14, 2013 at 10:51 am

Whenever I hear a civilian is packing a concealed weapon I question their mental state.

        • 45 prettyfoot58
          April 14, 2013 at 10:56 am

i can see why…i worry about why they feel the need to carry a concealed weapon…and who do they plan to shoot …

    • 46 Lovepolitics2008
      April 14, 2013 at 11:12 am

That a concealed gun permit should be honored in all 50 states is NUTS ! What the hell???? For a party that always screams about State rights, they sure don’t respect them when they want to push for their agenda.

I can’t imagine for a second that President Obama would sign a bill with that provision in it. If there is a case for a presidential veto, this is this one. But it won’t come to this because the amendment won’t pass the Senate anyway. Riight ?

Maybe I’m paranoïd, but this latest idea by the republicans smells like a political game. They know the amendment won’t pass, but they’re planning to use the vote on this amendment in congressional elections of 2014. They’re confident of retaining the House because of gerrymandering, and from now ALL they care about is positioning themselves to win the Senate. So they are targeting the democratic senators in red and purple states.

      • 47 Bill
        April 14, 2013 at 11:32 am

John Thune (R-SD) proposed a bill a few years ago to allow concealed weapons permits to be accepted by all 50 states. He said he would not feel safe walking in Central Park without his gun. The bill failed.

I have been right here retweeting and sharing all the good info. I had to refocus my attention to Maryland’s issues – Gun safety, Death Penalty, Marriage Equality, and a White Hate Group on one of our state colleges. I was full of pride that the students held a protest march against this hate group on their campus.

I’m honoured to be able to play a little bitty part in this wonderful time in which we are all living. I thought 6 shots for the whole round would be a miracle.

    • 78 Bill
      April 14, 2013 at 10:27 am

Four birdies on the back nine (-4) as opposed to the leader shooting one double bogey (+2) and one bogey (+1) would do it. Obviously there are many other combinations. Not easy but doable.

      • 79 Don
        April 14, 2013 at 10:41 am

Bill, Tiger’s mindset is what separates him from almost all the other golfers. In his mind, four shots is nothing.

        • 80 Bill
          April 14, 2013 at 10:46 am

Exactly. If he can take advantage of the par fives today which he has not been doing his chances look good.

      • 81 amk for obama
        April 14, 2013 at 10:58 am

A leader doing triple bogeys in back nine is less than 50%. Even over one round, it’s 50% at best. The worst case scenario is for Tiger to roll out 5 birdies in back nine with leader staying on par.

        • 82 japa21
          April 14, 2013 at 11:01 am

Since they haven’t teed off on th front nine yet, premature to speculate.

          April 14, 2013 at 11:08 am

I’m not looking for the leaders to have a triple bogey on the back nine, what I am looking for is for the leaders to expose who they really are.

Jason Day who was tied for the lead yesterday bogied 17 and 18 yesterday dropping two strokes from the lead in the last two holes. As Tiger is saying anything can happen.

            April 14, 2013 at 11:19 am

Of course, theoretically anything can happen. But statistically, 19 of the last 22 masters winners have come from the 3rd round leaderboard.

As I said, he is one confident man and of course, he doesn’t brag and so, it can happen.

I found your comment in no way petty, Pf. There are just some (in fact most) journalists/announcers/pundits that rub me the wrong way, some just by talking about PBO, others by being on same stage with him. One thing that helps me ignore** them is that when they are rude, ill-informed and/or confrontational his very control shows them up as unprofessional and ignorant. When they are good, both side come out looking good. [** This doesn’t mean I don’t get angry, but in a disdainful way.] BTW, I’ve never had one but I could easily see myself sharing a VSPC with you as I don’t drink alcohol. Who knows?

I’m happy that President Obama is going to a national show. He will have the occasion to push back against the over-the-top criticism we’ve seen lately. I’m pretty sure he will talk, for the nth time, about the principle of SHARED sacrifice, and BALANCED approach to the budget. And he will reiterate that chained CPI is 1) a republican demand and 2) a part of a proposed DEAL in which there is also the closing of corporate loopholes and the end of certain corporate subsides.

I’ve seen it first hand, and it is not a pretty sight. I remember in high school this Haitian kid I knew committed suicide because he was ashamed of being Haitian. People don’t know about the rich history of Haiti or its people.

I was reading over at Huffpuff (I know, I know) seems as though a gay rights organization is mad at President Obama and want him to issue executives orders so they can get recognized on a federal level, President Obama wants to go the legislative route. Maybe they should go ask Bill Clinton for help seeing as though they think he’s their savior.

Can you imagine if the Civil Rights Act had only been an executive order…we need laws to protect the rights of others…

I agree, President Obama has long said that executive orders are good, but they can be undone by the next President. That’s why President Obama always try to go the legislative route. So many Americans seem to think that all President Obama has to do is wave his pen and things get done, it doesn’t work that way. Two of President Obama most trusted aides (Pete Rouse, Rob Nabors) are legislative miracle workers. President Obama understands the inside game.

      Here’s a post I left there…..I was surprised to see it posted…..

“Why again must this president continue when GLADD presents awards, they do so for and To others and Not this president? They want him to fight for their issues and then they turn around and afford credits to others while decimating this president? So Please Lets get Jobs for all.

Pres Obama Lost NC for his support of Marriage Equality……the right thing to do. Harvard said with a newly released report that this pres lost 4% of the votes in 2008 and 2012 due to his pigmentation.

The economy and Jobs for all should be his main focus and getting the House back for 2014 and Making sure that Kim Jong Un and the bad actors in the world do not harm USA.

As a Woman, the 326 bills in 2013 by TBGOPers controlled legislators across the USA are more pressing issues affecting 51% of the population. Why are those rights denied Not a Priority of Us all? Women making 76% of what men make is of a more priority. Voting rights being suppressed are bigger issues. There is nothing wrong with each community fighting as hard as ever for their specific causes. However, The more pressing issues are left behind……such as Gun Safety issues and JOBs, JOBS, JOBS!!!!!”

Nena, thank you. The president has an obligation to help all groups that are being discriminated against, including women and voters. State legislatures and the R’s in Congress are running roughshod over all of our rights and people direct their ire at PBO. Why aren’t they making noise at the state houses or Congressional Republican offices? We chose not to have a monarch in this country a long time ago.

Bill you dam right he does, he feel in love with Michelle Robinson, who is now our wonderful FLOTUS. I don’t care what Sen. Collins look like, I care more about her policies and what she stands for.

            April 14, 2013 at 11:38 am

To me Sen. Collins have become another right wingnut conservative. You used to could expect her to show alittle independents from her party, but since Mitch McTurtle said no working with this POTUS, she have been right in line.

No offense my fellow Femaledom community, but If Susan Collins is a Beautiful Lady, then, I am Mona Lisa for the TOD community.

To answer your question, Hell No. Only Pres Obama is judged with a Double, Double, Toil and Trouble unattainable standard set by the 98% of the DC/NY punditry Elitist Class.

      • 137 anniebella
        April 14, 2013 at 11:54 am

The entire Obama family is judge that way. Where were the Democrats and Republicans when the NRA put forth that ad about the Obamas girls being protected in school? Or when the girls went on vacation. The right wing attack on FLOTUS, racists attacks on the Obamas where are the Democrats? So this entire family have had to deal with double standards, difference standards than any other first family. But yet they had to rise above it all, and continue with class and dignity.

So, tiger tees off at 2. On one hole, as you may have heard, he hit a great shot right at the pin, looking for an Eagle. An Eagle is 2 under par.
BUT, he hit the pin and it rolled into the water, 2 stroke penalty. Then, he dropped it 2 yards further then he should have, and was assessed another 2 stroke penalty.
4 strokes penalty on one hole that could have been an Eagle?
    Bad luck!

Frankly Jovie, I don’t see why the tiger should be looking for an eagle under 2 pars. What are pars anyway, and why would the eagle be hiding under them? In addition, it doesn’t seem bad to me that the shot fell in the water because with all the concern about guns, shots etc the water is probably a good place for the shot. Just saying.

I don’t want those who support gun control to give up if we don’t get what we want. I feel like this will be a long battle, and we have to keep fighting, because those high capacity magazines need to be ban, and the assault weapons too. We need to go vote 2014 and keep the Senate in the Democrats hands and work our butts off to put the House back in Democrats control.
