Is this a change from the original proposal in hopes of getting the 60 votes?

If you hear anyone state that GOP obstruction against Clinton was the same as it is today, consider this:

It looks like @BuzzfeedAndrew is sending a tweet each time a Republican casts a “No” vote today versus the “Yest” vote they cast in 1999.

While discussing ballpark safety in the aftermath of the bombings at the Boston Marathon with CSNPhilly.com on Tuesday, Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon made a reference to the ongoing gun control debate, claiming that President Barack Obama “wants to take our guns.”

“Today’s day and age, has gotten so crazy, everything. You know? [There is] all this stuff going on. And, shoot man, Obama wants to take our guns from us and everything,” Papelbon said. “And you got this kind of stuff going on? It’s just a little bit insane for me, man. I really don’t even know how to take it.”

    • 54 japa21
      April 17, 2013 at 4:42 pm

Sadly, a lot of people have come to believe this due to the rantings of the NRA, RW media and GOP politicians like McConnell who tweets about keepong PBO from taking our guns. Unfortunately, there is little to no pushback on this. That is one of the reasons the background check went down, because people (including some senatiors who should know better) believed it included a national gun registry, which it didn’t and a registry is just a way of people able to take people’s guns.

The paranoia of the right is very frightening.

    From TP :

    LATEST UPDATE
    4:27 pm
    Manchin/Toomey amendment voted down
SHARE The Senate voted down the Manchin/Toomey amendment to extend background checks for gun purchases at gun shows and online, in a vote of 54-46. The measure needed 60 votes to be included in the underlining bill. As Vice President Joe Biden called the finally tally a spectator yelled, “Shame on you!”
Currently, that legislation contains a much more stringent provision that will almost certainly fall short.

It’s time for us to remember Lincoln’s call to action: “Let us take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion, that we here highly resolve that those dead shall not have died in vain.” Innocent children have died and we will not forget. We’ve taken up the cause and won’t rest until not one other life is lost to gun violence.

And that’s as it should be. If you are not a criminal, what do you have to hide??

I don’t want criminals delivering meals to vulnerable elderly people. Stay clean for a while. Sweep the streets, clean up the neighborhood, do stuff that doesn’t involve people first. Let’s see how you do with that, then we’ll see if you can help people.

      • 77 japa21
        April 17, 2013 at 4:59 pm

I don’t think the tweet was complaining about that, just comparing to the lack of it to get a gun.

      • 79 57andfemale
        April 17, 2013 at 5:12 pm

But criminals can get guns at gun shows. You can’t bring a bag of groceries to the elderly but you can get a gun.

Linda, I don’t know who this woman is, but she is a horse’s ass. This is a defeat for the American people, and, ultimately for every senator who voted “no.” They are marked and their betrayal will never be forgotten.

This is how the MSM enables this corrupt behavior from the GOP. By giving them political cover and turning everything into a damn game about “defeating Obama.” It’s not Obama’s kids who are lying six ft under, their bodies riddled with bullet holes!!! If I were one of the Newtown parents, I would seriously consider starting a movementto get rid of the media as it is. Because the media are part of the problem – a HUGE part.

      • 92 Lovepolitics2008
        April 17, 2013 at 5:17 pm

Agreed. Another huge part of the problem is the left who always go along with the meme that “Obama wasn’t strong enough to make this happen”. “Obama doesn’t lead”.

      April 17, 2013 at 5:06 pm

      Bobf,

Can you help me to understand how this 60 vote threshold came about? How come 51, isn’t good enough where are there 100 senators?

      • April 17, 2013 at 5:13 pm

Senate procedural rule (not in the Constitution) that enables the minority (i.e., 41 of 100 Senators) to prevent anything – votes on legislation, cabinet appointments, judicial appointments, etc – from advancing to a vote, when the vote on the measure only requires a simple majority to pass it.

        • 101 isonprize
          April 17, 2013 at 5:18 pm

so, let me see if I understand. It take 60 to get a bill to a place where that bill can be voted on. Once it’s ‘there’ it takes a simple majority of 51 for that bill to pass. If it’s 50/50, then the Vice Pres gets to cast a vote.

          Is the above correct?

  41. 104 sabreen60

Hello TODers. The Senators who voted no on the gun safety bill don’t give a shit about the 2nd Amendment. They know this has nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment, even if their ignorant constituents don’t. These Senators care about money that they can raise at their fundraisers.

You have to get a background check to get any job. But you can buy a gun. and the government isn’t supposed to be allowed to know that you own that gun.

Ironically, there were provisions in the Toomey/Manchin amendment that were horrendous: The amendment also would make it easier to transport and market guns across state lines, something many gun-safety advocates oppose, and strengthen the existing prohibition on creation of any federal gun registry. And yet, this was considered a major step in the right direction, and it couldn’t pass. Well, it did have the votes to pass. It just wasn’t allowed to come up for a vote. By Senators representing 11% of the population.

These same people will be the first to outlaw nail files on an airplane, but are fine with war zone weapons on the streets.

One opportunity in this: The Democratic Party and President Obama can now brand themselves as the Law and Order party and the GOP as the party of criminal gun violence and slaves of the gun lobby. That should be repeated over and over again.
