I’m home sick today and must say, all these hilarious posts about TNN are doing nothing for my headache!
CNN—the MOST trusted name in comedy.
What is being overlooked in all the joking about CNN is that what they did was not bad journalism, it was irresponsible journalism.— john miller (@deaconmill) April 17, 2013
I don’t think that their irresponsible journalism is being overlooked. The question is What can we DO about it?
Force them into reality. We can start by turning that crap off and letting them know why they are losing viewership.
I’ve been there for over 5 years now. Pretty much since the ’08 election. I get my news online. But WAY more people have to turn it off the crap that is CNN, Fox “News” etc. Seriously.
I love my President. Thanks UT for holding down the fort while Chips is away :)
Ditto, UT. Thanks.
Thank you for the kind words hopefruit.
I totally second that, hopefruit2. Utaustineliberal is doing a fine job indeed! It looks like everyone is having some fun with the “irresponsible” CNN.
God bless all of our wounded warriors – including those with wounds we can’t see – and God bless our President!
Posted this at the very bottom of last thread. Does anybody know anything about Yardarm? I haven’t seen him around here and his last tweet was April 5.
Sometimes he goes fishing or camping or something like that. Maybe that’s what he’s doing?
Anyone else have a clue?
I wondered that too. I haven’t seen him lately. I missed his Navy banter… I hope that he is okay.
Senate getting ready to vote……..cspan 2

Is this for the gun measures?
Light the candles, and pray for these people to see the right and true way Forward. They do need our prayers, not just our condemnation. Maybe on some higher level, they will hear us.

I see on C-SPAN that they are voting on a Manchin-Toomey Substitute Amendment (exempts background checks for transfers between family members & some private sales).
Is this a change from the original proposal in hopes of getting the 60 votes?
…or is this one of the 8 amendments that were being voted on today?
Sen. Baucus, who voted to ban assault weapons in 1994, just voted against background checks to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.— Josh Dorner (@JoshDorner) April 17, 2013
UTA, thank you for your excellent, dedicated and speedy work.
I apologize for my comments last night. I was 100% wrong. Please forgive me.
If you hear anyone state that GOP obstruction against Clinton was the same as it is today, consider this:
In 1999 eight current Republican Senators voted for background checks. 6 of them oppose background checks today. buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczynsk…— Andrew Kaczynski (@BuzzFeedAndrew) April 17, 2013
It looks like @BuzzfeedAndrew is sending a tweet each time a Republican casts a “No” vote today versus the “Yest” vote they cast in 1999.
THIS is the kind of information ‘News” organizations should be broadcasting. THIS.RIGHT. HERE.
Apology accepted Arapaho415. :D
They have been there too long, they are not doing their job. They need to step down.
Sen. McCain just voted Yea.HZ
I’ll be thanking him later today…..the other lamebrain from AZ is slated to vote no….he’ll be hearing from me later today as well.
I need to thank Mark Kirk, too.
They are voting against voting ?

I can’t watch anymore of this.

Senator Lee wants 2 guy the Police force with his amendment.
While discussing ballpark safety in the aftermath of the bombings at the Boston Marathon with CSNPhilly.com on Tuesday, Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon made a reference to the ongoing gun control debate, claiming that President Barack Obama “wants to take our guns.”
“Today’s day and age, has gotten so crazy, everything. You know? [There is] all this stuff going on. And, shoot man, Obama wants to take our guns from us and everything,” Papelbon said. “And you got this kind of stuff going on? It’s just a little bit insane for me, man. I really don’t even know how to take it.”
Sadly, a lot of people have come to believe this due to the rantings of the NRA, RW media and GOP politicians like McConnell who tweets about keepong PBO from taking our guns. Unfortunately, there is little to no pushback on this. That is one of the reasons the background check went down, because people (including some senatiors who should know better) believed it included a national gun registry, which it didn’t and a registry is just a way of people able to take people’s guns.
The paranoia of the right is very frightening.
UT, you’re an absolute legend for keeping things going today. I had to go out early this morning and thought I’d be back hours ago, but I spent half the flippin’ day in traffic, grrr. Thank you SO much for the posts, huuuuuuuugely appreciated. Only catching up now on what looks like an insane day, will post a little later. Thanks again UT.
Anytime Chiparoo. Anytime.
As always, thank you for the opportunity. :D
Joe Biden ain’t even sticking around for the rest of the votes, he is done!
From TP :
Manchin/Toomey amendment voted down
SHARE The Senate voted down the Manchin/Toomey amendment to extend background checks for gun purchases at gun shows and online, in a vote of 54-46. The measure needed 60 votes to be included in the underlining bill. As Vice President Joe Biden called the finally tally a spectator yelled, “Shame on you!”
Currently, that legislation contains a much more stringent provision that will almost certainly fall short.
Were the family members in the gallery today ?
This makes me so angry.
The treasonous GOP is voting against the wishes of the American people.
Theoretically possible for 41 senators representing less than 11% of the population to block pretty much anything. bit.ly/ZqSUF0— Greg Pinelo (@gregpinelo) April 17, 2013
So in a sane universe, df, or any universe before 2010, the resolution would have passed. It’s only in Looneyville, otherwise known as the US Senate, that this was voted down. If more Americans realized the absurdity the Senate had become they would demand their money back. I have never resented paying taxes, always believed it was part of my responsibility as a citizen, but I resent paying the salaries of McConnell and Co.

It’s time for us to remember Lincoln’s call to action: “Let us take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion, that we here highly resolve that those dead shall not have died in vain.” Innocent children have died and we will not forget. We’ve taken up the cause and won’t rest until not one other life is lost to gun violence.

One of the very few times I agree with Joe.
I call B.S. I bet dollars to donuts that next year at election time Joe will be rooting for anything Republican to win to keep the House and takeover the Senate regardless of that vote today.
I’m taking names so next year I can see how many of them he calls out just before the election.
Now when some fool gunman kills or maims one of their own what will they do then. i wouldn’t wish that on anyone but it’s mazing how the tune will change. What a shame.

I want to volunteer to deliver meals on wheels..oh damn I am REQUIRED to get a Criminal BACKGROUND CHECK..— katherine (@capecodgurl) April 17, 2013
And that’s as it should be. If you are not a criminal, what do you have to hide??
I don’t want criminals delivering meals to vulnerable elderly people. Stay clean for a while. Sweep the streets, clean up the neighborhood, do stuff that doesn’t involve people first. Let’s see how you do with that, then we’ll see if you can help people.
I don’t think the tweet was complaining about that, just comparing to the lack of it to get a gun.
oh, okay. I’m just tired of people complaining about having to get background checks.
But criminals can get guns at gun shows. You can’t bring a bag of groceries to the elderly but you can get a gun.

Bob, the answer is that we are no longer a democracy. The GOP minority hijacked the Senate and democracy has been turned on its head. 46 votes beats 56 in this new world. Even Alduous Huxley wasn’t this inventive.
“Even Alduous Huxley wasn’t this inventive.”
Sadly, true. But, it is up to us to restore majority rule. We will.

Linda, I don’t know who this woman is, but she is a horse’s ass. This is a defeat for the American people, and, ultimately for every senator who voted “no.” They are marked and their betrayal will never be forgotten.
She is the WH correspondent .
This is how the MSM enables this corrupt behavior from the GOP. By giving them political cover and turning everything into a damn game about “defeating Obama.” It’s not Obama’s kids who are lying six ft under, their bodies riddled with bullet holes!!! If I were one of the Newtown parents, I would seriously consider starting a movementto get rid of the media as it is. Because the media are part of the problem – a HUGE part.
Agreed. Another huge part of the problem is the left who always go along with the meme that “Obama wasn’t strong enough to make this happen”. “Obama doesn’t lead”.
I would join that movement! Ever since President Obama was elected everything they do (they the media) has been about defeating him, never mind the interests of the country.

NRA is the voice of the monsters. Hateful monsters all of them
@SenatorReid @SenCarlLevin it's UNCONSCIONABLE & VIOLATION of a core tenet of democracy that you allow a minority to rule. NO MORE 60 VOTES.— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) April 17, 2013
Can you help me to understand how this 60 vote threshold came about? How come 51, isn’t good enough where are there 100 senators?
Senate procedural rule (not in the Constitution) that enables the minority (i.e., 41 of 100 Senators) to prevent anything – votes on legislation, cabinet appointments, judicial appointments, etc – from advancing to a vote, when the vote on the measure only requires a simple majority to pass it.
so, let me see if I understand. It take 60 to get a bill to a place where that bill can be voted on. Once it’s ‘there’ it takes a simple majority of 51 for that bill to pass. If it’s 50/50, then the Vice Pres gets to cast a vote.
Is the above correct?
These were amendments, and that requires 60 votes. This was a straight up or down vote.
Hello TODers. The Senators who voted no on the gun safety bill don’t give a shit about the 2nd Amendment. They know this has nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment, even if their ignorant constituents don’t. These Senators care about money that they can raise at their fundraisers.
So, I have to have a background check to be a librarian, but not one to buy military grade weapons. Gotcha.— Liberal Librarian (@Lib_Librarian) April 17, 2013
You have to get a background check to get any job. But you can buy a gun. and the government isn’t supposed to be allowed to know that you own that gun.
Ironically, there were provisions in the Toomey/Manchin amendment that were horrendous: The amendment also would make it easier to transport and market guns across state lines, something many gun-safety advocates oppose, and strengthen the existing prohibition on creation of any federal gun registry. And yet, this was considered a major step in the right direction, and it couldn’t pass. Well, it did have the votes to pass. It just wasn’t allowed to come up for a vote. By Senators representing 11% of the population.
These same people will be the first to outlaw nail files on an airplane, but are fine with war zone weapons on the streets.

One opportunity in this: The Democratic Party and President Obama can now brand themselves as the Law and Order party and the GOP as the party of criminal gun violence and slaves of the gun lobby. That should be repeated over and over again.
