HEADLINE: On Newbury Street, near the bombing scene, people stopped to hear President Obama speak

// When the president came on, heads turned.

The crowd had gathered at Joe’s American Bar & Grill mostly, if not all, to watch the interfaith service held today at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in the Sout End. And until that moment some nodded, some clasped hands, some hid red eyes behind sunglasses, but forks still clattered, ice rattled, and conversations competed with the construction noise coming from the open-air wall onto Newbury Street above the TV.

And then, it was the president’s turn.Everyone, everything, seemed to stop.

“On Monday morning, the sun rose over Boston…,” President Obama said, and Beth Sweet, a recently retired paralegal from Dorchester, leaned over the bar, tight-lipped, fingers folded as in prayer. Next to her, a young woman crossed her arms, unblinking, ignoring her mimosa. //

Good old Texas, the state I now live in, the state that has every other elected politician walking around saying he or she wants to get rid of the EPA. Good Old Texas, the state I live in, where the Governor visits other states to convince them to come to Texas and enjoy low taxes and even less regulations. How can any sane person not want an active EPA, I actually work with people that don’t like the EPA, the E fucking PA. These fuckers act like the EPA did something personal to them. And this afternoon the Governor is on the phone begging the President for disaster assistance.

And these are the people whom we rely on to give us “news”:

“A lot of time in the control room was spent making fun of Ann’s outfit choices or just generally messing with her,” one staff person told Stelter. According to the same staffer, back in spring 2012, employees openly mocked Curry’s bright yellow dress worn during one broadcast — photoshopping a picture of Big Bird next to Curry, asking the team to vote, “Who Wore it Best?” The Us Weekly-inspired joke was posted in the control room.

Even the show’s executive producer, Jim Bell, supposedly took to teasing Curry. Stelter reports that Bell “commissioned a blooper reel of Curry’s worst on-air mistakes.” Another unnamed producer claimed that Bell once called staff members into his office to show a mistake Curry made while talking on-air with a local station. (Bell denied both incidents.) Prior to Curry’s teary June 2012 send-off, several boxes of her personal belongings went missing from her office and “ended up in a coat closet, as if she had already been booted off the premises,” Stelter writes.

Regal Cinema sees backlash over Obamacare cuts

// Moviegoers are vowing to boycott the country’s biggest theater chain after it slashes employees’ hours to avoid the new law. Regal Entertainment Group (RGC) is finding itself at the center of a drama worthy of a big-screen blockbuster. The country’s biggest movie theater chain has stirred a hornets’ nest of controversy after announcing in a company memo that it’s cutting hours for thousands of nonsalaried employees to avoid providing health care insurance under Obamacare, according to Fox News.

But that isn’t going over well with some customers, who point to Regal’s hefty $334 million in 2012 profits and its chief executive’s massive 31% pay hike. The company’s shares rose 17% last year. “SHAME on you for cutting employees’ hours to avoid giving them healthcare while your CEO made $4.4 million and other executives were given large bonuses. You lose my business,” one person wrote on Regal’s Facebook page. //

I love it when things like this happen, mainly because corporations like this are market driven, and since most business owners harp about free enterprise and rugged individualism and all that shit. The free market is truly at work here, some people don’t take kindly to being fucked over or seeing other people getting fucked over. I have no sympathy for Regal Cinema, they fucked over their workers, and now the public is responding to that fucking over by doing some fucking of their own.

That isn’t just white privilege, Alycee, that’s a black and evil heart. There are many white people with good jobs and money who would spit on this attitude of Scalia’s. He is a throwback to a more miserable age and he needs to leave the stage. That such a man would serve on the Supreme Court in 2013 is truly a tragedy for the US. In my lifetime there have been many brilliant and worthy Supreme Court justices who had the vision to move the US forward. Scalia has no vision and he looks backwards. He is a disgrace to the court and to the country.

McClatchy’s Amina Ismail, a reporter who primarily covers Egypt, noted that President Barack Obama had determined Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings to be an “act of terrorism.” She then asked Carney how the White House would consider an action of similar devastation by the U.S. abroad.

“I send my deepest condolence to the victims and families in Boston. But President Obama said that what happened in Boston was an act of terrorism,” she said. “I would like to ask, do you consider the U.S. bombing on civilians in Afghanistan earlier this month that left 11 children and a woman killed a form of terrorism? Why or why not?”

Sounds like old Cenk Uhygur sent this reporter that question.
He is so worried about the civilians in Afghanistan, more than the ones here.
That said, how does one constitute an innocent civilian in Afghanistan or Pakistan for that matter?
I think they all know something, based on my prior experience there .
Innocence is a sullied word over there.

And this is what passes for serious news and commentary in America today!!! I hate Cenk Ugyur!!! What a miserable a-hole!!!

    • 67 Lovepolitics2008
      April 18, 2013 at 4:17 pm

I’m absolutely convinced that when there are innocent victims of drones strikes, it’s killing the President inside. I’m convinced that for him it is by far the most heart-wrenching, soul-searching element of his presidency. He is a reluctant warrior. I’ve watched this man every day for five years, at home and abroad. He doesn’t have anything to prove to me in terms of his humanity and his conscience.

I’ve always believed his actions are guided by his VERY BIG concern about the proliferation of nuclear arms, and about the deadly combination of loose nukes and countries destabilized by terrorism. He once told George Clooney that if there was one thing that kept him up at night, it was “Pakistan”. He is thinking long term here. And I mean in terms of DECADES. And to prevent very grave danger for the next decades, he has chosen to fight terrorism with resolve, despite the horrible price to pay in the form of innocent civilians killed. Despite the backlash. It’s all about preventing even MORE horror. It’s about GLOBAL SECURITY for the next century.

That being said, I have some concern that with time, the very strict guidelines established at the beginning have loosened a bit. Is the drone program totally under control ? Is the process still very very strict and careful at every level of the chain of command ? Maybe, maybe not. I don’t know. It’s good there is a public debate about this. It forces everyone implicated, at every level, to take pause and reevaluate what they’re doing.

      • 68 Jovie
        April 18, 2013 at 4:31 pm

Nobody has been able to prove that any of these victims were innocent civilians.
That’s because no reporter dares to interview anybody in that region.
Because, A Journalist by the name of Pearle was kidnapped and killed by Taliban, early on during that war.

They represented LaPuke and his board and their pals – and the gun makers who pay them and some who joined the NRA, that’s for sure – I’m hoping it’s not all GOP constituents. If 90% of Americans wanted background checks, there are a lot of NRA cardholders and Republicans in that group. Didn’t I hear that one of the reasons one needs an NRA membership card is that they “say” they provide gun safety training and it’s something that’s required for gun owners to present, if they want to use the target ranges? Obviously, the target ranges are owned (at least body and soul, lock, stock, and barrel) by the NRA monsters like LaPuke, or they wouldn’t add that special requirement – which might keep some new target shooters away. Wake up, gun owners!

Thanks to the Civil Rights movement, we are beyond the stage of simply refusing jobs, housing, or service at a lunch counter based on a person’s race. But institutionalized forms of racism still exist….

That’s why the discussion about this hearing is so important. Those claiming that we are now living in a color-blind post-racial society because students can get served at a lunch counter want to stop any further progress towards equality. And Thomas Perez is putting himself on the line to keep us moving forward on that front.

Murkowski: Obama’s energy plan dead without wider drilling

    By Ben Geman
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) warned the Obama administration Thursday that its proposal to steer federal oil-and-gas revenues into a green energy fund won’t fly unless it’s paired with opening new areas to drilling.

President Obama is pushing Congress to create an “Energy Security Trust,” which would steer $2 billion in revenues from offshore development into technologies that wean cars and trucks off of oil.

Murkowski – the top Republican on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee – said Thursday that White House resistance to opening currently off-limits areas will sink a plan that could otherwise gain political traction.

“If that is the approach the administration is going to take on this, it is not going to go anywhere,” she said at a hearing on the Energy Department’s proposed fiscal year 2014 budget.

I love it that we have a literary president. He reads poetry, prose, other speeches, history, children’s books…..all of these inform his speaking, but I would say that poetry especially affects and informs his speaking. One cannot speak and write like he does without having immersed himself in good poetry.
After his speech I had to look up the poem and discover the author. The title of the poem is “Boston Is Like No Other Place in the World Only More So” by E.B.White, the author of the much loved children’s book, Charlotte’s Web, and himself a consummate New Englander.
The verse the president quoted is:

    For Boston’s not a capital,
    And Boston’s not a place;
Rather I feel that Boston is
    A perfect state of grace.

I also liked and appreciated Gov. Patrick’s speech. I especially liked his line when speaking of Massachusetts, “We invented this country.”

I admire both of these men deeply.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved Ernest Moniz, President Obama’s nominee for Energy Secretary, in bipartisan 21-1 vote on Thursday.

The endorsement of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology physicist signals he’ll face little opposition when the full Senate votes on the nomination.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) cast the lone dissenting vote Thursday.

Moniz directs the MIT Energy Initiative, and served as undersecretary of Energy in the Clinton administration.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) warned on Wednesday that President Obama could unilaterally legalize millions of undocumented immigrants if Congress does not pass a bipartisan immigration bill offered by the so-called Gang of 8.

Appearing on the nationally syndicated “The Mark Levin Show” — one of many conservative talk radio interviews the senator is granting to pitch his immigration proposal — Rubio argued that if lawmakers fail to reform the system in the way he has proposed, “bad people” like President Barack Obama will be able to losen immigration laws and undermine America’s border security:

RUBIO: If we don’t do anything, then the status quo remains, which is they won’t do anything. You won’t have E-Verify, you won’t have…. In fact, I think it’s possible that they could give legal status like they did to the DREAM Act qualificators, I mean people who qualified under the DREAM Act — they could do the same thing to millions of people more. What would stop them from doing that? [...] There are consequences to electing bad people to office. There are consequences to the fact that Barack Obama won his re-election. There are, there is no denying it. And we are living that every single day and there is no denying it.

that was my first thought Donna, they are so young… they are someone’s kids, how could they do this. What could bring anyone to do such things, I just do not get it.

Actually they almost to the letter fit the profile of a domestic terrorist who would commit that kind of crime. Young, male, caucasian, most likely Libertarian (Rand Paul follower), etc.

Well—–they might not be—–maybe yes, maybe no—–what does an American look like these days? Can’t decipher background from those photos—–and that wouldn’t be decisive anyway. People watch on any city street in America, and you will see these 2 guys—-home grown or visitors.

I’m relieved. With all the hatred and racial anxiety peddled by the right, it would have been very difficult in America if the suspects had been blacks or muslims.

Could be Europeans, could be Americans.

The best scenario: neo-nazis, crazy pro-gun folks. It would help lower the “temperature” that has been rising up for five years now.

Check in with mediamatters, if you get a chance, Love. They watch the ratfuckers so we don’t have to. My sincere apologies for calling faux ratfuckers……or maybe not.

This is so true. The media has really outed themselves on their racism with this case.

Yep. At first I was relieved because they appeared not to be muslims. But it’s hard to know. There is a possibility they are from the Middle-East… Lebanese, Iranians.

Let’s hope it won’t be long before they find them. And with Internet, people all over the world are looking at those photos.

We still have a way to go in this good ole USA regarding race. I look forward to the day when CRIME does not equal ‘Dark Skinned’ automatically.
John King and CNN should be out of business. Rev. Al had a righteous rant about this last night and he was spot on.
Since the release of the photos ,I notice color has been dropped from the conversation…well except for ‘white’ cap’.

with boston, the ricin letters, and who knows with the fertilizer plant (seems like a stretch, but possible), happening on or within a couple days of tax day and waco, and oklahoma city bombing, i refreshed my timothy mcveigh knowledge, and his talk and writings are exactly, i mean EXACTLY, like the anti-government, which directly means anti-constitution, nuts of today, which dominate the republican/libertarian parties. timothy mcveigh’s talk could be replaced with rand paul’s or ted cruz’s or rush limbaugh’s and you wouldn’t know the difference. these current anti-constitutionists are terrorist enablers, and since they never want to get their hands dirty and just encourage others to carry out the tasks, i think you can make a good case they are terrorists themselves. tomorrow april 19th is the same day as waco and okc bombing. i hope people are on high alert.

wow. here’s how you can distinguish some of the reactions from white people vs people of color on this “dark-skinned” subject of the new pics of the suspects.

Alot of white people are saying, well you can’t really tell.

People of color are saying “Shit, I’m darker-skinned than these” guys!

    White privelege?
