ThinkProgress: 12 Programs Congress Refuses To Save From Automatic Spending Cuts

After thousands of flight delays across the country this week, the Senate voted Thursday night to give the Federal Aviation Administration the flexibility to keep the nation’s airports running smoothly … That means lawmakers will be able to fly home for recess this weekend without any delays ….. Unfortunately, though, Congress has shown no willingness to provide similar relief for the families that are being hammered by sequestration in other ways. Here are 12 programs that have experienced devastating cuts because Congress insists on cutting spending when it doesn’t need to — and that have been ignored by the same lawmakers who leaped to action as soon as their trips home were going to take a little longer:

1 Long-term unemployment, 2 Head Start, 3 Cancer treatment, 4 Health research, 5 Low-income housing, 6 Student aid, 7 Meals On Wheels, 8 Disaster relief,
9 Heating assistance, 10 Workplace safety, 11 Obamacare, 12 Child care….

Business Insider: his week G.E. Capital Finance announced that it would no longer finance gun purchases, becoming the latest in a string of companies that have decided to leave a large amount of money on the table rather than risk their reputations on the gun business.

It’s one of the few places where the high-profile publicity campaign in support of increased gun control has led to a real world result….

Business Insider: A Republican Senator who sponsored a controversial amendment to expand background checks received a record-high approval rating in a new poll. Another Republican Senator who voted against the measure saw her approval rating drop drastically.

Those are the ramifications that have come out of last week’s failed vote to expand background checks, something that gun-control advocates think will cause backlash since 90 percent of voters routinely approved of the measure.

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), who co-sponsored the amendment with West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin, saw his approval rating jump to 48 percent in a new Quinnipiac poll. Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), who voted against the measure, saw her approval rating dip to 44 percent in a new Public Policy Polling survey.

Peggy Noonan wrote another lump of bile and spite this week about the President – Charles Pierce’s opening paragraph on her hate-fest was, as usual, magnificent:

Charles Pierce: Our Lady Of The Magic Dolphins apparently has gone so far around the bend that she ought to be passing us again any minute now. Today’s delusional episode concerns the opening of the Great Manure Locker down in Dallas, and la Noonan apparently feels beset again by the current’s president’s education, his use of multisyllabic words, and his disinclination to give her his foot to fondle. This has set the bats aloft in her overly populated belfry again ….. Jesus, woman, he’s smarter than you are. So is whatever you had for breakfast. Get over it, please.

Full post here – but be warned, it includes extracts from the turd’s trash.

****

Mediaite: Rep. Michele Bachmann was afforded 90 seconds to speak on the floor of the House leading up to the vote to end air traffic controller furloughs …. rather than use her time to express why she planned to vote for the measure, Bachmann chose to criticize the speeches made by some of her Democratic colleagues, leading to an unfortunately mangled Shakespeare quote….

…. “There were numerous Republicans that voted against the sequestration because we knew all of these calamities were in the future. And so it reminds me of the Shakespeare line: ‘Thou protestest too much.’”

….. the actual line, spoken by Queen Gertrude in Hamlet, reads, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks”….

Good morning, hopefruit! Lovely day here in the Big D, although a bit overcast. Happy Saturday.
The Charles Pierce article about Noonan is hilarious. The republican media/pundits are so delusional. They have hopped aboard the crazy train and heading right into insanity. It’s funny and scary to watch. If their antics didn’t affect so many innocent people, it would be hilarious.

    Goog morning everyone.

Hello Chips. The sun is brighter in my world today, I am grateful. My hubby survived his horrible ordeal. He is OFF the ventilator.

My son and I watched him in the ER as his heart almost stopped.

It’s a great day in my household, my world.

And oh, I have a new computer now. I can tweet and post without the multiple problems I encountered with the old cranky one stopping when I was in the middle of a good convo.

Have a good day all. Gotta run.

Good morning TOD Community, my seven year old son talked me into buying him some potato chips known as “hot-fries,” which he proceeded to vomit up the last couple of days. There is nothing like receiving a phone call at work from a fire breathing spouse. I tried telling her that she had bought him the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago, but the difference was that he didn’t vomit them up on her watch. Now I sit at work in the dog house awaiting my punishment when I go home tonight, it is sad when a 6’2 275lbs Union man is afraid to go home.

      April 27, 2013 at 10:07 am

Hi Don – make sure you report this to the fast food joint wherever you bought this. Two days of vomiting is not normal for just an upset stomach. It could be food poisoning. Even junk food is supposed to be safe – so this is not just the result of poor food choice.

      • 49 Don
        April 27, 2013 at 10:19 am

These were potato chips that I got from the corner store, fast food wasn’t involved. And don’t get me started on fast foods, I’m still trying to work a plea bargain for buying the kid McDonalds for dinner a month ago when my wife had to work late one night and I didn’t feel like cooking. Other than the once in a while screw up I’m a pretty good dad.

hope your son feels better soon and can get back to doing things that interest seven year olds.

as a fellow Union member, I can see that you have one possible course of action:
      – call up a few members from the local Union Hall (preferably construction-related),
      – let them form a “human chain” around you,
      – go home & bashfully apologize, and then
      – together offer to jointly work on a family project that your dear wife has wanted done for a while and you have previously procrastinated

Damn…cocaine must be a hell of a drug.

  12. April 27, 2013 at 10:02 am

“Unfortunately, though, Congress has shown no willingness to provide similar relief for the families that are being hammered by sequestration in other ways.”

It’s sad that many have evolved into a “me and mine” mindset and have no concern for the plight of others. Unfortunately, this is the mindset that we are seeing more and more in the people that are being elected to represent us.

Many of these same people may have benefitted from some of the programs that they are now trying to eliminate. But they seem to think that the same programs that may have given them advantages are not deserved by those who can benefit from them now. They are in essence hoarders who not desirous of letting others have a slice of the pie we call the American Dream.

While the President often touts the compassion and unselfishness of Americans, it’s hard to see these qualities in many of the people who are supposed to be representing us.

The emoprogery all over the blogosphere is intoxicating….

      • 88 Lovepolitics2008
        April 27, 2013 at 11:25 am

And they don’t eat their own even when they suffer political setbacks. They whine a little but keep it at a reasonable level. Only their extremists lose their minds, and they quickly get back in line for the next battle.

The President is not an hostage taker and has never been. Small businesses, families, there were a lot of people affected by the chaos at airports. It was not “only the rich”. I don’t picture the President wanting to make some people suffer in order to help other people. And yes, that makes the political battle more difficult.

I suspect his strategy is to use the discontent created by the narrative “Congress only help themselves and the rich”. Maybe he thinks this will be the kind of leverage he needs to force Congress to do something on the programs affecting the poor. But if the recent past is any indication…

A ray of hope: at least the media is now talking about “meals on wheels”, ‘Headstart’ , and the “Congress only cares about themselves” is taking a bit of traction.

        Who knows ?

    • 89 Don
      April 27, 2013 at 10:43 am

Someone needs to tell “Bo” that the FAA Bill was by unanimous consent which means EVERY MEMBER of the SENATE voted in favor of it, so his anger might be misplaced. On the other hand one can be glad that over forty-thousand FAA workers won’t get furloughed.

      • 90 hopefruit2
        April 27, 2013 at 11:08 am

I think he’s being a bit disingenuous at this point. More likely he doesn’t want to have to blame the emo-darlings – Sanders, Warren and Brown, and thus finds it easier to let the administration take the brunt of his “anger.” As this person so aptly tweeted:

I’m not a fan of Facebook or Mark Zuckerberg and when one of my friends at work told me his former company is suing Facebook for stealing the name and concept of timeline I was pretty happy. His company started it in 2009 – at least 3 years before Facebook. Link to lawsuit that will be tried in Chicago

      http://www.nbcnews.com/business/judge-facebook-can-be-sued-over-timeline-1C9185634

The website his company started is actually VERY cool that basically converts a family photo album to a very functional website that you and your family can set up your own album online. My family is in the process of uploading all family photos so that everyone around the country can look them up in an easy to view format. Only those invited to your “album” can view the photos.

Many agree with you Jacqueline, Sanders plays the “Popular Independent” card for all its worth. This guy has never taken a tough stand on an issue so he has never really had to face any sort of political heat. Oh Bernie loves playing to the crowd, but Bernie will never lead the crowd because that would mean that sometimes he just might have to tell the crowd what they don’t not want to hear.

A federal appeals court has dismissed an oil industry challenge to Securities and Exchange Commission rules that require petroleum and mining companies to disclose payments to foreign governments, ruling that the case belongs in a lower court.

The Friday ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit doesn’t wade into the substance of the controversial SEC rule and doesn’t end the legal battle over the regulation.

Instead the appellate judges agreed with Oxfam America, which intervened in the case to defend the SEC rule, that the industry challenge belongs in federal district court. The appellate judges dismissed the case “for lack of jurisdiction.”

The American Petroleum Institute (API), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other groups had already filed suit in district court alongside the appellate challenge, and Friday’s ruling notes, “Their caution proved prescient.”
