In honor of President Obama’s state visit to Mexico, a little music for the night.
First off, “Sensemayá” by Silvestre Revueltas.
Now some boleros.
First, “Llora mi corazón” by Julio Jaramillo.
Rocío Dúrcal – “Te sigo amando”
Now, the art of the trío.
Trío los Panchos – “La Malagueña (Homenaje a Sarita Montiel)”
And Trío los Tres Reyes – “Odiame”
And finally, a mariachi! And how appropriate – “Viva Obama!”
This is your late night/early morning open thread.
Hi Jackie….1st ‘n 2nd….yeehaw
Amazing, Barb! Yeehaw!
You two hens quit cluckin’. You ain’t gettin’ ready to hatch no eggs ya know. (ducks and runs).
You’d better duck and run. When Barb sees this, oh, my, I just feel sorry for ya!
Congrats on 1st Jacqueline and a very good evening to you.
bbl … off to the kitchen to prepare some dinner ….
As my grandson once said to my son, when he asked his dad what smelled so good in the house, and my son (the self-taught gourmet) said, “Dinner”:
“I like dinner.”
Congrats on 1st JO’B!
Oh, LL, you posted my favorite ’08 “Viva Obama” video! Thank you.
If, like me, you’re not good with other languages, other than Latin, which is dead, and want to listen to the heartfelt Viva Obama here and not on YouTube (don’t make me repeat that in Latin), here’s the English translation. These words ring true today, as well!
To the candidate who is Barack Obama
I sing this corrido with all my soul
He was born humble without pretension
He began in the streets of Chicago
Working to achieve a vision
To protect the working people
And bring us all together in this great nation
Viva Obama! Viva Obama!
Families united and safe and even with a health care plan
Viva Obama! Viva Obama!
A candidate fighting for our nation
It doesn’t matter if you’re from San Antonio
It doesn’t matter if you’re from Corpus Christi
From Dallas, from the Valley, from Houston or from El Paso
What matters is that we vote for Obama
Because his struggle is also our struggle, and today we urgently need a change
Let’s unite with our great friend
Viva Obama! Viva Obama!
Families united and safe and even with a health care plan
Viva Obama! Viva Obama!
A candidate fighting for our nation
Now you’ve got the tears flowing, JOB. It must be even more beautiful in Latin. He’s gone now, but you might want to check out Dr. Richard Prior. He Lived the language.
Oh, thank you. I really am not that fluent in Latin (it’s one of my jokes – that usually I’m the only one still laughing at), but I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED LATIN.
Just did an online search and found his book on Amazon: The Everything® Learning Latin Book by
Dr. Richard E. Prior. Sounds great!
I’m fluent in Botanical Latin. Does that count for anything?
Sure, why not!
Now I’m jealous, Carol. Botanical Latin. A world of its own. Sigh.
Oh, it’s fun. You can’t pronounce it wrong because no one knows how it sounds!
Wonderful, JOB, thank you.
Thank you, JackieG. Once I get Viva Obama in my head, I play that song over and over for days! Enjoy your day, too!
Central New York in the House of Chips, good to see you JOB and watching Lawrence R I P the NRA. Happy Dance!
Hello, Sweet Lady!! Lurkin’ always!! You and TheDreamTeam of TOD have saved my sanity. I just wish I wasn’t always 12 to 72 hours behind!
Ha, Lynn, I’m usually way more than 72 hours behind, so you’re doing fine! Hope all’s good, great to see ya.
“How do I love thee, let me count the ways!” This wonderful haven you’ve created weened me from ALL the bs msm HAIR ON FIRE crapola!
lol….so we’ve got east coast, middle america and west coast canada…..sweet….all we need is george norry and we’ll have “coast to coast”
speaking of which, is art bell still around?
Hi, Lynn, from Central Illinois in the House of Chips!
This is the place where the ‘cool’ kids hang, and I’m the happiest of lurkers. Thanks to one and all for this oasis, JOB.
Thank you, Lynn, for de-lurking (un-lurking?). (Uh, not lurking?) We feel the same way you do about TOD, and our Chips.
I kinda like the ‘un-lurking’ thingee. It sounds so Michael Weston. If you get a chance, please see my response to you re Latin.
Saw your response and responded back, Lynn. Thanks!
Thank you, JOB. He was the ‘little brother’ I never had. He sent me a copy of his last book, complete with a teeny, tiny piece of mosaic tile from one of his digs.
See what happens? You said ‘Latin’ and I was off to the races!
Latin will do that to ya! What a great story, and I thank you so much for sharing.
Of course, Lynn, now you’ve got me looking up Latin phrases for the occasion, thank you very much.
Here’s one I’ll dedicate to you and President Obama: Per aspera ad astra! (Through hardships to the stars!)
Tears again. See what you do to me! Dr. Richard and his partner Scott lived that. Okay, now I’m a puddle. I’ll be back when I finish moping off my face.
I’m so sorry; I didn’t mean to make you cry. But it sounds as though you have wonderful memories there! That’s the part to concentrate on, perhaps. Sending a hug!

Would you believe, I had that pattern back around 1969…
I’d believe it! Of course, not everybody even knows what a “pattern” is!
Yes, I didn’t have the bell bottoms though. I was tall for the time and had to make my own pants because stores only sold waders.
Good for you MP. One step at a time and you’ll soon be skipping!
Add a little spice.

My ONLY purpose for posting this comment is a PUBLIC SAFETY MESSAGE – NEVER, I repeat NEVER, place inside a closed container aluminum foil strips, shards, fragments, whatever, and a ‘household toilet cleaner’ (aka ajax) or, even worse draino. NEVER. That is a very dangerous explosive device and you don’t need any sophisticated electronics to trigger detonation. All you need to do is shake it. BOOM. OK.
Don’t mix drano or Ajax in the toilet either.
Hey Chips. Just wanted to let ya know that I actually started a blog. I set it up 2 days ago and I’ve poste like 4 times so far. It’s decidedly NOT political and will include some personal pics and family pics. It’s primarily a way for me to channel my love of useless pop culture information and being able to be as long winded as possible without interrupting more important stuff…lol. I’m the queen of the completely irrevelant and off topic…lol. Since it’s decided NOT political, I’ve decided to keep it password protected (same general password to access, but sometimes specific passwords for post I really just want to have up for my fam).
Anyway, if ya’ll want to check it out, here the link: nellybellsplace.com. If you follow me on twitter, then you can DM and I’ll be happy to provide the password to ya.
BTW, I got my new Samsung Galaxy S4 today. I’m charging it up over night and then I plan to play around with it all weekend…lol.
Anyway, good night, night owls
Let me know how you like it. I have to get a new phone stat…
congrats on your new blog!
Great read on our inept, useless “journalists” Is the press too big to fail?
From climate change to financial meltdown, the worst of our journalism is becoming the norm, writes scholar.
The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.

'Is the US Press too big to fail' aljazeera.com/indepth/opinio… As journalism, nope, it's failed. As #NEWSTAINMENT, it's boring. cc @PressSec @vj44— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) May 03, 2013
Bob, you’ve nailed it on two fronts. What we see today, except for a few exceptional cases, is sensationalism, not journalism. I’ve learned ,and tell others, to believe nothing they see or read, but to do their own research and check original sources where possible. As PBO said at the WHPD, there’s a great news source in town–it’s called WhiteHouse.gov. And boring doesn’t begin to cover the constant bleating and bloviating that passes for news and punditry on TV. One glimpse at a talking head and I can’t suppress a yawn.
Excellent article, AMK. Have always admired Todd Gitlin.

I loved Heart’s version of Stairway to Heaven I have to find it every now and then and play it – so good those Wilson sisters!
Was an incredible tribute…brought back memories of middle school for me. Me and my buddy thought we were so cool b/c we used to jam to his dads music Clapton/Zepplin.
Heart smokes! Saw ‘em in concert at the Weedsport Speedway (old dirt race track back in the ’90s-outback of central N.Y. ) and again a few years ago. They haven’t missed a beat.
Thanks for the memories, Alice.
What ho TOD night owls. Just came back from an OFA Immigration Reform Rally in Downtown LA where we congregated in front of Congresman Xavier Becerra’s (D) office holding signs asking drivers to honk for immigration reform. Good turnout and good response from both the drivers and people walking by. In fact a couple that was just walking by, as the event was getting underway, stopped and joined us. I also got to meet Alejandro, now 19 yrs old, who was brought here when he was 7 mos old. All he knows is this country as home as he grew up and has lived all his life in Chicago (he had just got off a plane from Chi-town earlier today). He’s a Dreamer and all he wants to do is go to school at UCLA (my alma mater woot) and become an officer in the Marines. He is part of a new 30 min documentary by David Guggenheim about the Dreamers in this country that they screened for us after the OFA event. These kids, just like our illustrious Prez, want common sense immigration reform now. So the push is underway with OFA at the lead to pressure Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform before they go on recess in August (approx. 91 days from now).
See their stories. Sign the petition at http://www.thedreamisnow.org Harrass your Congress Critters and tell them to do their damn job!
Done! Thanks, purpleshoes:)
Thanks df! How u be??? You good???
Most excellent, PS!!! Both my wife and I have signed the petition.
Thank you, PF, and thanks for getting in the arena, rather than standing on the sidelines.

MUST SEE LOD REWRITE: http://www.nbcnews.com/id/45755883/ns/msnbc-the_last_word/vp/51755494#51755494
I watch O’Donnell “Rewrite” last night, and it is disgusting that grown men would make rifles to sell to kids, and what is even more disgusting is the parents who would buy those rifles.
df, thank you for this. I missed LOD last night.
Just unbelievable. I think that Lawrence going after the business owners, not the parents, was important to highlight.
And Lawrence calling attention to some of the things that we are comfortable with restricting kids from, that no one questions, yet politicians are ok with kids having access to firearms. The baseball example is a good one. But I can think of many other LEGAL limitations placed on little kids. They have to be harnessed properly in a car seat, have to be immunized to go to school, you’d be charged with abandonment if you left them home alone, etc., etc.
The whole thing is astonishing.
Just checking in, goodnight everybody
I love Latin music!
Just checking in. We are drowning in NE Fla.
Sadly I find it easier to believe that South Carolina has “nullified” the ACA than that the republicans are heading towards total self destruction. When some of their disastrous candidates can get elected to congress and state houses – governors – it seems no matter what they do and say there is a minimum 45% of the country will still vote for them. I cannot imagine what they have to do to stop people voting for them???
I think the article means self destruction in Congress not the party as a whole.
If people keep electing them to congress – it won’t self destruct – sad truth.
Yet another attempt to stop Northern aggression against the Confederacy. huff.to/15dppeU— Nelson (@Yardarm756DD) May 03, 2013
ARE YOU SERIOUS, Yardarm????????????
Would you believe sharp stick in the eye serious?
I shake my head!
Sorry Yardarm – given how the media and the GOP have attacked the President every chance they get & looking at the lulus that operate in South Carolina – this is completely believable.
What is seriously sad is that those who have no health care in SC probably voted for this state house
I bet Maureen Dowd, Dana Milibank, and other lazy mainstream media pundits/reporters will blame this on President Obama’s supposed lack of leadership. Apparently these SC believers in the doctrine of “nullification” have never read Article VI, paragraph 2 — better known as the “Supremacy Clause” — of the Constitution. It clearly says that “the laws of the United States…shall be the supreme law of the land….” Federal laws cannot be “nullified” by state laws. The doctrine of “nullification” failed in the 1830s, then more resoundingly in the 1860s, and then again in the1960s. Talk about insane people! These right wing Southerners think that doing the same thing, over and over again, will bring about desired results
Save your Confederate money ’cause the South will rise again.
I may be wrong but this ObamaCare issue must be a strong focus for us to register voters who lack health care and rarely if ever vote. most of these uninsured voters could help in turning the congress and senate -since a significant number who live in purple and red districts probably rarely vote
Another effort to insure no scientific minds will come from LA.

WHOO HOO!! We get FLOTUS and First Children back to Ireland in June [17th & 18th] while the President is in No. Ireland.
So, I’ve had a hell of a night.
I almost got into a death match with an aggressive panhandler while waiting for the train who didn’t take kindly to my telling him “no” to his request. He had his four kids in tow, and then started saying that the only reason we didn’t give him money was because we were white and he was black. When he started to get in my face, I had no fear of him; what I did have was fear of what I would do to him if he threw a first punch. I tend to lose it when someone tries to physically assault me or someone I care for. Not a good start to the night. The train finally came; he got on, still cursing at us, and we wisely decided to forget the train and just drive to the show.
I’ve never been subjected to such visceral, unfettered hatred. Oh, I’ve had people angry at me; but this was different. All the disappointments of his life were just focused on me like a laser.
So, definitely a new experience. Hopefully I’ll learn from it.
Otherwise, the show was great. But now I’m worn out. See everyone on the flip side.
wondering what crazy stuff the media clowns are planning to bring up today
What is the news talking about? Obama had a bad week ? You mean, after his press conference a melt down from the press blaming the Presidrnt for their respinsibilties?
So, it’s gone from Congress manufactured crisis, to the media manufactured BS?
The whole culture in DC is ridiculous and the media has only one target, the President.
Throughout history, if congress wants to stop the President, due to seperation of powers and checks and balances, it can. It hasn’t been done often, but if congress dies not like the President, it has stopped his Legislative agenda. We are seeing that right now, and its just to make him look bad.
Maybe setting up for jobs report. Just waiting like vultures to pounce .
Jovie, Sequester has had a full month to play out. Numbers will be bad today. How could they be good?
The President warned us all what would happen. I hope I’m wrong, but the numbers will be bad today and it’ll be the President’s fault because he can control all things and all people in the natural world. ((snark))
On the other side of the Aisle , I assure you the T Baggers in congress are also pusses that they cannot get anything done.
But, this is what the voters voted for, divided government equals Dysfunctional government.
The public is saying we don’t like either parties policies and we just want status quo and nothing being done.
Sadly, the voters are responsible for the dysfunction in the beltway.
Mooooooorning everyone, will have R&S up ….. soon-ish.
This is a BFD.

Good morning UT, Chips and TOD
Those are pretty darn good numbers considering all the obstructing that ‘s going on in Congress.
I imagine that the unemployment rate would be at or under 7% by now if they would just stop blocking jobs bills.
The thing is this President is going to move the economy with them or without them so they better get on board before PBO kicks it into turbo charge mode.
And Good Morning.
Howdy all you O’s!!!! Another great getting up day on the old TOD stoop, eh?
April unemployment down from 7.6 to 7.5 and a better than expected 165,000 private sector jobs were added. February numbers were revised up from 88,000 jobs added to 138, 000.
Ooops March not February numbers revised ^^^^
Good jobs report; up 165,000. Unemployment down to 7.5%. February and March numbers also revised up.
