This and That

“Did you see that Jon Karl, um, exclusive?”

You gotta love the media: In the 18th paragraph……

Steve Benen: USA Today had an item today on the IRS controversy, which seemed to reinforce much of what we already know: conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status faced unfair and unreasonable scrutiny. But deep in the article, in the 18th paragraph, USA Today added seven unexpected words: “Some liberal groups did get additional scrutiny.”

Mind you, plenty of places didn’t mention this at all today

Can’t stand Wiegel, but liked this….

NPR: The Justice Department’s subpoena of Associated Press phone records as part of an investigation into what Attorney General Eric Holder has called “a very grave leak” to the news agency has set off a political firestorm on Capitol Hill, but there’s a lot to the AP story published a year ago that started it all.

….. as NPR’s Dina Temple-Raston reports, there’s much more to the story:

“As we understood it then and still understand it, that suicide bomber that AP refers to in its story was actually a double agent working with western intelligence agencies,” Dina says.

Although the double-agent did hand the new underwear bomb technology to U.S. officials, “they had hoped the agent could do more [and] … one consequence of the story is that this agent’s identity was blown,” she says.

Steve Benen: I lacked the energy to respond to the Politico piece everyone’s talking about, but it’s genuinely awful and a case study in what’s wrong with so much of Beltway reporting. It does suggest, however, that the D.C. media establishment is effectively prepared to go to war with President Obama, in part because it considers him “aloof,” and the White House can expect “ruthless” coverage for the indefinite future.

(Prepared to go to war? That war began in January 2009)

Andrew Sullivan: Mike Allen [who used to work as Dick Cheney’s unofficial spokesperson] and Jim Van DeHei live for moments like this. It allows them to do what they do best: talk about their “town” as an entity. They don’t have to grapple with policy or history; they just have to describe the mood among their connected friends….

“Republicans have waited five years for the moment to put the screws to Obama — and they have one-third of all congressional committees on the case now.”

Yeah, sure, the last five years have been marked by Republican restraint in their attacks on Obama – starting right with the zero votes for his first initiative, the much-needed and now-vindicated stimulus, and their continued total obstructionism to even basic things like executive branch appointments. They waited five years for this … Please.

….. The evidence for their opinion comes from the usual Obama-haters who have long resented the arrival of some core principles in the ethical sewer of the official city….

No More Mister Nice Blog: …. while we’re on the subject of [Maureen] Dowd, let’s turn to the Dowd reference in that damn Politico story about how all the Kewl Kidz hate Obama now:

The dam of solid Democratic solidarity has collapsed, starting with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd’s weekend scolding of the White House over Benghazi….

Maureen Dowd as part of a “dam of solid Democratic solidity” in support of Obama? Seriously?

Do you know when Dowd first sneeringly referred to Obama as “Obambi”? In 2006.

President Obama will meet with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) at the White House Wednesday afternoon to discuss the status of comprehensive immigration reform “and other issues,” press secretary Jay Carney said.

Obama’s meeting with McCain comes as the White House tries to move past stories about the IRS targeting conservative organizations and the Justice Department snooping on phone records of Associated Press journalists.

Obama will also be meeting with Treasury Department officials at the White House Wednesday afternoon as part of his effort that appropriate IRS officials are held accountable, Carney said.

Why with McCain? I cannot stand that man. He’s still bitter about losing in 2008. Personally, I don’t see the point of meeting with Republicans. Most likely they’re not going to support immigration reform anyways. Hope Reid pushes a bill and allows Repubs to vote against it and show just how racist they continue to be.

“It does suggest, however, that the D.C. media establishment is effectively prepared to go to war with President Obama, in part because it considers him “aloof”…

So “aloof” is the code word for “uppity” when referencing black men in power who are not only intelligent, but won’t bow and scrape to the good old boy establishment?

    • 59 Jovie

That and most of the DC establishment are T Bagger/libertarians.

    • 60 nathkatun7
      May 15, 2013 at 8:42 pm

I am glad that President Obama is “aloof” to the knife-wielding, back-stabbers, in the media and D.C. political establishment. This means that the President cares more about attending to the needs of ordinary Americans than he does the needs spoiled, lazy, entitled, elites who thrive on gossip and do no meaningful productive work, but yet get paid so much money.

By the way, even a martian who has seen the President interact with people, both here and abroad, knows fully well that the media are lying when they accuse the President of being aloof. I’ve never seen a President who enjoys being with people and is always warmly hugging people and being warmly hugged back. The same is true of VP Biden, Dr. Jill Biden, and, especially, FL Michelle Obama. I bet you if you took a poll to find out who, of the modern President’s,was the most friendly, and the most accessible, President Obama would probably be at the top of the list. For me (I was born when Truman was President) he is at the top of the list.

      • May 15, 2013 at 9:27 pm

I was thinking the same thing nathkatun. Aloof does not allow someone to pick you up and squeeze you in a bear hug. Aloof does not comfort someone who has lost all their possessions in a storm. Aloof does not grieve with people who have lost loved ones. Aloof does not try to uplift others. Aloof does not care about those who are struggling. Children do not warm up to Aloof. People do not want to be in the presence of Aloof.

At the same time, who wants to go out their way to subject themselves to the company of people who are hostile towards them, who are always lying to them and about them, who are always trying to undercut them. That is what the GOP and the MSM do to President Obama. He only deals with them to the extent he HAS to.

“He only deals with them to the extent he HAS to.” And that’s as it should be, Swbluega. In this internet age, the so called WHPC really serves no purpose. More and more people no longer depend on the corporate MSM as their main source of credible news. No wonder the MSM, epitomized by the WHPC, are more interested in propaganda and sensationalism than they are in reporting news. They think this is the only way to keep viewers interested.

This is who President Obama and AG Holder are, men with a core to do the best each day for the people of this nation. They are No Ones” Hey boy, be quiet, stop talking etc.,” No more of that crap.

We are going to continue to work hard and support POB and VPBiden. This is where we must come together and know what we are to be focusing on and then moving out with discipline, power, and love. We can do this.HZ

So let me get this straight. The head guy at the IRS and the second in line head guy at the IRS, AND the person over the 501C4 department, Bush appointees all, will be let go or fired? Bear with me here…..so I’m to believe that these Bush appointees will be leaving and PBO gets to nominate his own people? Does that mean…..dare I say it…..PBO really gets to put his own people in a very high profile agency, you know the one that drives the RWNJ nuts? Chess or no chess, that sounds like a pretty good move to me. I’m a believer. He has eyes in the back of his head, behind his back, and in those President shoes he wears.

    • May 15, 2013 at 8:36 pm

Sullivan’s article was excellent in its defense of President Obama and ridicule of Politico, but I don’t understand how Sullivan supports President Obama but believes in the “Blacks are genetically inferior IQ” nonsense. Sullivan puzzles me.

    • 87 99ts

Sullivan is only for Sullivan – He supports PBO if it suits his view of himself & the world – otherwise he does not. His one moment of fame was recognizing Sarah Palin for what she was – why anyone pays to read his bile is beyond my understanding. Comparing races to different types of dogs – and then quoting 19th century white folks lies (loved by the KKK) is beyond reprehensible.

99ts, what you said of Sullivan applies to so many other media pundits. As Bobfr has urged us repeatedly, we have to become our own media. I am glad Sullivan wrote an “excellent” article to day. But like you, I know his not dependable.

  20. May 15, 2013 at 8:46 pm

A thought has been stewing in my mind this week as we’ve watched/heard the circus out of DC. Common sense–I know, that’s a HUUUUUGGGGEEEEE stretch–says that the right-wing and the media know that PO knows how much they all hate him, truly and undeniably hate him. ( I believe if something happened to him, there would be cheering in the streets by many on the right. They would not be able to hide their joy.) What’s been stewing is this: Knowing how they hate him and want to see him fail, do they not get that he will never give them a reason to impeach him? Do they not know that he, like Jackie Robinson, will always walk the straight and narrow, guard everything he does, get all the info before he moves, etc. IOW, that he is always going to be extra, extra, extra cautious. I guess I know the answer, which is that they are all so blinded by the hate, they are unable to think clearly and rationally. The whole thing just makes no sense.

TNmtgirl, they don’t think at ALL. If they did, they would know that the consequences of going after a much loved president are going to redound on them a hundred-fold. My only thoughts on this are that it appears ever since Barack Obama came onto the national stage, not one of his close allies and friends – not one – has ever come out with any hint of a scandal or negative word about him. He’s comfortable in his skin, and he does the right thing. I think it’s just how he rolls. No need for him to be overly cautious … his mind sees things play out before they even get started. He is a remarkable, fascinating human being. And the most interesting man on the planet, there’s that.

Hello everyone – I just got off a call with OFA about immigration reform. It is very important that supporters stay on top of what is going on with this legislation. Without our vigilance and input, this process may become stalled or unwanted provisions may be added. At the same time, we should voice our support for amendments that make this bill more inclusive and address specific problems. One such amendment is a provision introduced by Senator Mazie Hirono (D, Hawaii). If you like this, please add your voice to strengthen her position. Thank you all.

hgerhard, this is very important. While the DC media wastes its time on trivia, OFA is doing important work. Many lives depend on this immigration bill and it’s regarded by the media egotists in DC as nothing but another ‘political battle’ or game. So much easier to write endless drivel about non-existing scandals then to analyze the impact of immigration reform on the lives of real people. In our area, I’ve spoken to many young Dreamers who are counting on this bill to make their futures more secure.

And Rachel gave her snarky report on The AP story, asking if an informant would want to secretly call a reporter anymore after this. Personally, I can say, my heart is not bleeding for these so-called reporters. They spend more time reporting on crap than reporting on good news anyway. After PBO gave his healthcare speech, how many reporters spent a few day reporting on the good stuff in this bill?

Ok, so people say heads should roll and then head do roll and now the same people are mad because the heads that rolled are not “the right heads”. Ok, so then maybe Obama should have re-hired the Bush appointee and bring him live on camera and made him resign all over again. Or not maybe he should have fired the lowly workers in Cincinnati just following orders, but being civil service employees, you can’t just fire ‘em right?

Oh and Obama needs to do something translates to…???? What exactly. Issue a statement saying the admin doesn’t condone the actions, check, that’s it’s inexcusable, check, that some investigation of the IRS will occur within Congress, check, and what else????

What more could/should he do aside from rendering his garments and dropping to his needs in shame and apology?

Oh, yeah, he could wait a bit more, but then of course the same people who said, Obama “needs to address this soon or now” or “did the White House wait too long”..will be satisfied with that right?

Or maybe he could go on that epic rant that so many seem to want him to do, and have it ONLY be broadcast and represented fairly and correctly…where exactly? We are already inundated with the “press turns against” Obama bias and we expect the media to fairly report anything Obama says??? Contrary to what many of my peeps in the liberal blogosphere think, things that circulate in the blogsphere don’t always become average dinner conversation. The average person, has no idea what a Balloon Juice, DailyKos or blah blah blah is.

So just cause an epic Obama rant would be all the range on the interwebs, don’t mean shit if the media gets to it and knowingly allow lies to distort (see Benghazi, Shirley Sherrod…etc)

And there is the reason why we are getting all these attacks on the President. They have zero tolerance for anybody but themselves.

At some point, might be worth asking what questions the IRS can properly ask when it vets groups seeking 501(c)(4) tax-exempt status.

They are trying to bait us into going with the nucLear option, in Nominees for Labor and EPA.
    Why?
So they can then use that as an excuse not to pass the immigration bill. Blow up the senate.
I wonder if the immigration bill would pass with 51 democrats?
