Hey Don – congratulations for first place!
Great pics!! Thanks, Chips
Love the pics. Off to work. See ya’ll around midnight.
My ovaries just skipped a beat.
At a hearing full of ignorance, @RepLloydDoggett got it right. 1.usa.gov/107xZnW— Lawrence O'Donnell (@Lawrence) May 17, 2013
Afternoon, Yardarm! Thanks so much for sharing that … it was like eating a big ol’ dessert after lunch! (Plus, I laugh thinking that Lawrence’s head will be puffed up nicely all day, and rightly so, I’m thinkin’ ~ after the attribution from Rep. Doggett!)
Hiya jc! I’m not at the top o’ me game today. So it’s back to lurking for me.
Hang in there, Sailor!
That’s my dude! He’s an awesome Texas Democrat.
Yes indeed! Doggett was excellent. He is definitely among the 40% plus Texans who have not gone crazy.

But but but Steve Miller said…
Ha! It’s “Take Your President To School Day”! A little show and tell in Baltimore. Thank you, Chips, for all of your efforts to keep us informed of the treasures that are the travels of President Obama.
RT @thecaucus: Updated: Official says Treasury Dept. knew of I.R.S. inquiry in 2012 nyti.ms/1127srh— The New York Times (@nytimes) May 17, 2013
Ok! That’s not good!
That’s not bad. They were informed of an investigation not the results.
Well, the NYT article doesn’t look good, on its face. There appears to be some more fodder for Republicans in these newest revelations. Even if it is all explainable, this was not the direction I wanted to see this go. Time will tell, but a defensive posture is now necessary.
Again, this is a classic example of the media confusing issues to create impressions where there are none. The NY Times article says that the IG was investigating the IRS for possible targeting of political groups (doesn’t say which political groups.) I would imagine that in a Presidential election year, it would be the responsible thing to do to ensure that political groups from either side of the isle are not being targeted, which is what probably prompted this investigation. For all you know the investigation may have been prompted by a Republican who wanted audits of OFA, Occupy, Dogs Against Romney, or any other such “liberal” group. As we very well know, Republicans are notorious for engaging in behaviors while accusing others at the same time of engaging in the very behaviors.
Therefore, no one can conclude that: (1) conservative groups were being targeted by the IRS, or (2) that the Obama administration/WH knew that the IRS was being investigated for the targeting of conservative groups.
Hopefruit, as always, your comment is absolutely spot-on! Yes the GOP will definitely twist this, but that does not mean that we should assist them. I am tired of being inflamed by media hype about perceptions. In the case of IRS, the only thing that would look bad is if the Treasury Dept. or the WH interfered with the Bush appointed IG from carrying out the IRS audit/investigation. As far as I am concerned, it does not matter if either the WH or the Treasury learned that the purpose of the IG’s investigation of IRS had to do with alleged IRS bias in targeting tea baggers and other conservative groups. They (WH and Treasury) still had to wait for the IG’s findings. As far as I know, the President did not get the IG’s report and findings until a couple of days ago. Once he received the report and findings, he moved quickly to adders the issue.
Yeah, I believe that Jay Carney said that they were only informed that there was an investigation but not the details and that it was a few weeks from completion.
Nope. Not good at all. And who is the chairman of the Senate committee holding hearings next week?
So it will be a Republican witch hunt in the Senate as well, because no one behaves more like a Republican with a D after his name than Baucus.
Let us suppose that both Treasury and the WH were informed that the IRS’ Inspector General was conducting an investigation about the possible IRS’ bias towards tea baggers trying to get tax exemptions? I am not sure what Treasury or the WH could have done differently in such a situation. Should the President, or Secretary of the Treasury, have called a press conference, prematurely to denounce the the IRS, before the IRS’ Bush appointed Commissioner had revealed his findings?
I read the article Jovie, it does not say that there was communication between the Whitehouse, the I.R.S. and the Treasury. Since the I.R.S. is an independent agency, it does not have to divulge any investigations that it undertakes. If anything the I.R.S should and might have gone to the DOJ if it had any issues with a tax-exempt organization not following the rules.
Jovie, so why is this not good? Did the Treasury Dept. stop the IG’s Investigation? When did the IG complete his audit? Did the Treasury Dept. interfere with his audit/investigation?
Responding to your question re: RT’s on Twitter in the Rise & Shine thread.
It’s more “work” for you to manually RT, but IMO, its better for your followers to do so because the “auto RTs” won’t show up in your followers’ timelines. Auto-RTs are viewable only to people who open your timeline (i.e., twitter.com/theobamadiary), regardless of whether or not they follow you.
Dumb question: what is the process for manually retweeting?
I’m really not trying to be dense here. I don’t hit the ‘retweet’ on the bottom of the tweet? Do I cut and paste the tweet in a new tweet? Am I sounding as stupid as I feel? I think so.
I stopped being lazy and checked Help at Twitter. Well, I am a Taurus, after all!
Don – Sometimes you amuse me, and that’s a compliment. Not sure if you’re trying, but I get a kick out of it! (I knew you’d want to know that – Ha!)
“…. because the “auto RTs” won’t show up in your followers’ timelines. Auto-RTs are viewable only to people who open your timeline”
Ah, thank you Arapaho415! I knew I’d read something about auto retweets being a problem, ie in terms of followers seeing them, but I had no clue what it was!
Oh crikey, Twitter is haaaaaaard!
Me too-ish 57!
Chips, that’s not true. The auto retweets show up in the timeline of everyone who follows you.
If you automatically retweet something, as long as I am on the main twitter page and not in my mentions page and I already follow you, I will see that retweet and If I retweet it, then my followers (some who might not follow you or whoever the person was you retweeted) will also see the tweet.
If I wasn’t on Twitter all day or for an hour, and I wanted to see your activity so that I could catch up on the goings on of the day, that’s when I will go to your twitter page and see everything you tweeted and retweeted that day.
And that last paragraph is actually what I do; checking your tweets, Chipsticks, Reuters, LOLGOP, ESPN and a few others. :)
UTA, you’re right (as usual).
I rarely go to twitter.com, i.e., my twitter timeline because I rely on Tweetdeck to view incoming tweets, which doesn’t display RTs.
So I guess it depends on how your followers access Twitter as to whether or not they’ll see auto-RTs.
And AMK was right that if only auto-RTs are counted as “RTs” by Twitter and whoever else keeps track of the number of RTs per tweet.
So Chips, the bottom line is that AMK and UTA are right: using the RT button is beneficial in all the ways that count. It’s only Tweetdeck that has the limitation that I described, and who knows how long Tweetdeck and other apps will be around, since Twitter has the option of killing them whenever they feel like it.
If the tweet is long, this is really difficult to do. The tweet itself has to be quite short in order to allow space for the manual retweeting.
You are so right – twitter is haaaaaaaard!
That’s not my understanding. I see retweets of other Twitter members all the time in my timeline from people I follow — where they didn’t manually RT. Here’s a link from Twitter explaining how retweets work and where they show up. In other words I’m following Chipsticks on Twitter and I see her retweets of hers that she has done of others that I don’t follow or do follow all the time.
You got it right Forus50.
That’s not true. The auto retweets show up in the timeline of everyone who follows you if they are on the main twitter page and not in their mentions.
I think Bo would have wanted many more kids. A son would have been nice. They were in school and started their family late so it didn’t happen.
Also, don’t want to stir things up, but it’s my understanding that Steve Miller, the acting IRS interim chief who was asked to resign by Jack Lew, is a career IRS official (25 years), not appointed by any Presidential administration.
I wouldn’t shed tears for him though. I don’t know what the retirement civil service guidelines are for him, but since he’s got so many years with the IRS and is leaving at the top of heap, he’s sure to be collecting substantial benefits and pay when he leaves.
He’s still young enough to get another job, can probably become a lobbyist and bring in two “salaries” (IRS retirement and whatever his new job will be).
Thank you, I thought I heard him say that…..I also read somewhere that he was leaving in June anyhow,,,,..,.,
President Obama needs to teach elementary school after his term is up. He is so good with children. Luv that about him.
What do we think of McDermott’s statement on the IRS hearings? Read the whole thing. I’m interested in your impressions.
There’s no debate. Of course he makes an entirely sensible statement. This is about timing and trying to bond with the Tea Party while they also take down ObamaCare. They look for every angle. Congress held a hearing on this same matter less than a year ago when Shulmin, the Bush appointee was in office. He flat out told Congress no such problem existed. Why aren’t they in the air to find him in contempt?
The thing that bothered me throughout the hearing was that the Commissioner said there were 300 cases that were held-up for scrutiny. Only 30 were Tea Party. Well, who were the other 270?
I have the utmost respect for McDermott and no question with the substance. What bothered me was it fully the first half of the statement, agreeing with Republicans, being outraged at the IRS being unfair and targeting conservative groups unfairly, yada yada.
The Democrats need to hire George Lakoff and get themselves a serious messaging guru. Get some licks in first, take back control of the narrative and stop fighting every battle on their turf. I repeat, I have not one iota of a problem with anything he said. It was the order in which he said it, giving credence to everything Republicans have said, and burying the lede at the very end.
I Just e-mailed McDermott regarding the first half of his statement. recommended that he work to clean up the “tax free” status vs just talking about problems-ended up thanking him for what he dose for us, and that I only support those who support our President.
Sen. Flake: Bloomberg ads wrong, ‘I did vote’ for background checks
Daniel Strauss – 05/17/13 01:22 PM ET
Recent advertising accuses Flake of breaking his promise to help pass expanded background checks. …
No he didn’t!
His defense is he voted for the grassley amendment.
Ayotte is trying to use that also…
Let’s hope the GOP pay for their cynicism of creating fake Senate GOP amendments to give “cover” to the reprehensible Ayotte and Flake so that they could cast fake “Yes” votes on the same day that they voted “No” on Manchin-Toomey).
Senators need to never forget that their constituents are their bosses, not wealthy donors and lobbyists.
Linda (and AnnieBella if you’re here too), saw that James Taylor is your fav on previous thread.
Loved this Charlotte Observer article on him just prior to last September’s DNC.
“A self-proclaimed “unabashed liberal,” Taylor’s views have grown from more than 40 years of roaming the globe to perform his confessional songs.”
“… his doctor father, Ike, launched a lifelong crusade for quality health care for everyone, and his New Englander mother, Trudy, was part of a movement to integrate local schools and facilities.”
Thank you very much for this…
There is one thing to be wrong but to be wrong and a lying s…t is quite a different scenario
Well said, kathryn!
Well, then they should have no problem voting for the background checks bill when it comes up again – the REAL one.
WASHINGTON — The chairman of the House Oversight committee has issued a subpoena to compel the co-chairman of the independent review board that investigated last year’s attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, to answer questions about its findings in closed session.
California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa issued the subpoena on Friday to retired veteran diplomat Thomas Pickering to force him to appear at a deposition next Thursday.
Pickering has offered to testify before Issa’s committee in public, but Issa said a closed-door meeting is needed first.
Pickering and Mullen (?) both offered to testify, but were insisting they do so in public.
Oh, NO, NO, NO, Mr. Issa….secrets and lies get you nowhere…….Need a twitter campaign….American people deserve the truth, Mr. Issa not your version of it.
If you’ll remember, they had Petraeus testify behind closed doors, as well, where he initially said the Benghazi attack was in response to the video. McCain came out the hearing afterwards and repeated it. Days later McCain turned on a dime and you know the rest. When Petraeus testified the second time, he changed his story. Of course, they made certain it was behind closed doors, so they could change the narrative. That’s what they intend to do now.
This shows how pathetic our media is, because no one has ever highlighted theses facts.
What is criminal Issa trying to hide? This is the time for Democrats on the Committee to boycott Issa’s closed session and insist on a public session testimony for both Ambassador Pickering and Admiral Mullen!
And to answer the question of why there are so many Aries’ and Taurus’ here… maybe good old Egyptian tradition?

When it’s too hot or too cold to go outside. Being from Minnesota I believe that most baby-making goes on in the cold winter months.
I can’t imagine that anyone is asking why there are so many Taurus’ here – can there ever be too many? ;)
Where are the Dem’s screaming “Cover up!” “Issa makes accusations in public but refuses to let the people hear testimony.”
Come on Dem’s. Fight back.
Gov. Patrick of Mass. said the Democrats need to get some backbone. It seem they haven’t yet.
Sweetest. President. Ever.
Really nice pictures of POTUS with the kids.
He’s going to be an amazing grandfather.
Calling Anniebella! Hello Chips, I don’t know how to bring this video over.
Here’s FLOTUS 22 minute video at Bowie State today, transcript there too:
Thank you Gazelle. You know I mean it when I say that, thank you. Now let me go listen to FLOTUS. :)
You’re welcome, Anniebella! I know how much you love all things FLOTUS, and there’s something under “related links” over there. Enjoy! TGIF! (Thank God It’s FLOTUS!) :)
I love POTUS too. I love the entire Obama family, including Bo. :)

“WE WILL NOT NEGOTIATE OVER THE DEBT LIMIT.”
The ultimate in manufactured crises
By Greg Sargent
Today, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner indicating that the debt limit will not be breached until after Labor Day. In the letter, Lew reiterates: “We will not negotiate over the debt limit.” And he patiently spells out the basic facts about the debt limit and why it’s absurd for Republicans not to agree to raise it in the quest to leverage more spending cuts:
It is important to note that increasing the debt limit does not increase spendting or authorize new spending; rather, it simply permits the United States to continue to honor pre-existing commitments to our citizens, businesses, and investors here and around the world. These commitments were already approved by Congress, and honoring them is not optional. The global economic leadership position enjoyed by the United States rests on the confidence of Americans and people around the world that we are a nation that keeps its promises and pays all of its bills, in full and on time. Breaching that trust would do irreparable harm to the economy and the American public.
These racists stupid ass Republicans and media will be shock when people say that they would re-elect Barack Obama a third time if they could.
Well wasn’t everything they did between 2008 and 2012 solely to limit President Obama to one term? McConnell came right out and said that was his only goal. They failed miserably and will fail again when Ms. Clinton is elected in 2016. Demographics aren’t in their favor anymore.
They will fail miserably for any Democratic President elected in 2016, because hopefully, Americans will be selecting the best man/woman for the job.

Course the racists bastards had no problem with that, it’s the white President. Just like these same people had no problem with the Bush twins going everywhere they wanted to go, but let the Obama girls go on vacation and they are mad.
Beautiful. The holes these people are trying to dig for POB will swallow them up in the end. “The hole you dig for someone could very well be the hole you will fall in.”HZ
Indeed, HZ! One good thing about modern technology is that it doesn’t take that long to access information.
JOB, I must have missed something! What’s this about “Umbrella gate”? Is this about the marines holding umbrellas over POTUS and the PM of Turkey at their news conference? If so, the U.S. media has totally lost all semblance of sanity.

Sweet. What was originally done to that 15/16 yrs old was wrong.
This renews my faith in my fellow human beings and American who can understand that we should not punish kids who are trying to do the right thing. This “zero” tolerance should not be made on every single case but on a case by case basis. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance unless you are a minority…if you go away and cheat on your wife and kids with your mistress then you get all the 2nd chances in the world.
Totally OT: Have any of you seen BBC America’s “Orphan Black” new series? A good alternative to “Scandal-withdrawal” as we wait for Season 3. It’s also On Demand.
Thanks so much, Chips. I just love it when he is with the young minds. It gives the President a beautiful lift to share in his space.
