Steve Benen: Obama is clearly the worst socialist ever

Wall Street’s major indexes soared after U.S. home prices saw their best annual rise in seven years, and consumer confidence got another boost. But even before today’s stock-market gains, President Obama is in rare company when it comes to Wall Street returns.

…. I don’t think a strong stock market is necessarily proof of a robust economy. On the contrary, I care far more about unemployment, median wages, and economic growth than Wall Street returns. But the right shouldn’t try to have it both ways – if a bear market in 2009 is, in the minds of conservatives, clear proof that Obama’s agenda is misguided and dangerous, then by the same reasoning, should we interpret soaring Wall Street indexes as proof of Obama’s genius?

Ed Kilgore: ….. we’re having to come to grips with the fact that about half the states appear unlikely to participate fully in the Medicaid expansion provided for in the Affordable Care Act …. that leaves quite a few (including most of the South) just flat out refusing to do anything for people with incomes under the federal poverty line. And that creates a very large “coverage gap … I’d suggest the “wingnut hole.”

ThinkProgress: How Obamacare Is Encouraging Employers To Cut Wasteful Spending And Promote Workers’ Health

In an effort to cut wasteful U.S. medical spending, certain employers will be scaling back expensive health plans available to their employees and encouraging workers to pursue more preventative and ongoing primary care. The move is being prompted by Obamacare provisions that encourage a more cost-sensitive and efficient approach to Americans’ health care than the status quo.

Bloomberg: The unofficial slogan for Massachusetts Democrats as they work toward a special U.S. Senate election next month is “Remember 2010.”

That was the year that political newcomer Scott Brown won the seat held for 46 years by the late Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy and became the first Republican to prevail in a Massachusetts Senate race since 1972.

…. To demonstrate the party isn’t resting on its 3-to-1 voter registration edge over Republicans, Democratic leaders are lining up behind nominee Representative Ed Markey, 66, including first lady Michelle Obama, who is set to host a fundraiser for him today in Boston. The president, who has a 67 percent approval rating in the state according to a recent poll by Suffolk University, endorsed him yesterday.

But Dotster found this: First Lady Michelle Obama won’t be joining the president back home. She is scheduled to be in New York for Democratic National Committee fundraisers, including a gala for the lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities that features Jason Collins, the first openly gay active NBA player.” (Chicago Tribune) – so, not sure which is right. Both??

Steve Benen: Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), who’s made quite a name for herself over the course of four terms in Congress, made a surprise announcement overnight: she won’t seek re-election…..

…. In recent elections, the right-wing Minnesotan eked out narrow victories — she very nearly lost last November — and recent polling suggested Bachmann would struggle to keep her seat in 2014. Quitting will save her the trouble of losing.

…. Bachmann will be missed, but mostly by the nation’s comedy writers.

TPM: Florena Carter’s shattered life didn’t make national news. Her son was killed on his 28th birthday in 2009. Carter’s brother pulled the trigger. Her father shot himself soon afterward.

The horrifying family tragedy became one more private story in America’s plague of gun violence. That year, 9,146 other people nationwide lost their lives in shootings.

The vast majority died in the type of daily gun violence that does not grab national headlines in the same way as the December massacre of 20 young children and six teachers at an elementary school in Connecticut, or the mass shooting last July in a Colorado movie theater that killed 12 people and wounded 70.

…. Often lost in America’s divisive gun control politics are the stories of people whose urban communities suffer the most from shootings every day. Although violent crime has been declining in the United States, it still far outstrips the rate of other developed countries. FBI figures show 8,583 people were killed by guns in 2011, the last year for which numbers were available.

That is nearly 24 people a day……

Greg Sargent: When a tornado pulverized an Oklahoma City suburb last week, it renewed a debate in Congress over whether federal aid for disaster relief must be offset by spending cuts elsewhere. In the case of the Oklahoma tornado, conservative senators such as Tom Coburn and Jim Inhofe immediately declared the need for offsets. Previously, large swaths of Republicans in the House voted against federal aid to victims of Hurricane Sandy, demanding it be offset by cuts elsewhere, which ultimately required that it pass the House mostly with Democratic votes.

But a new Washington Post/Pew Research poll makes you wonder who these austerity-obsessed GOP lawmakers are speaking for: It finds that even a majority of Republicans say federal disaster aid does not need to be offset with cuts to other areas of government.

Least surprising news of the day:

TPM: One of the most prominent political fact-checkers has shown Republicans to be much less honest than their Democratic counterparts … The study found that PolitiFact.com has rated Republican claims as false three times more often than Democratic claims … 32 percent of GOP claims were rated as “false” or “pants on fire” by PolitiFact, compared with 11 percent of claims by Democrats.

Great morning, everyone! It’s a great morning when you can wake up to the fact that Michelle Bachmann is leaving Congress. One Birdbrain down and 16 more to go. Forward!

Maybe she can accept a lucrative Fox News gig and resign right now and the House Intelligence Committee can replace her with someone actually intelligent.

Or just maybe she has decided to make a run for The White House in 2016, thereby insuring the GOP will never again sit in the Oval Office? And on that note, I have said all I have to say about her sorry self, she and her incapacity will get no clicks from me anywhere!

“That was the year that political newcomer Scott Brown won the seat held for 46 years by the late Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy and became the first Republican to prevail in a Massachusetts Senate race since 1972.”

Martha Coaxley was an abysmal candidate.

    • May 29, 2013 at 11:08 am

I can’t let the people of Massachusetts off the hook, though. They had a fantastic senator for 46 years who fought for the middle class and especially health care, and they allowed a man to take that seat who had vowed to kill healthcare reform. No matter how bad the Democratic candidate, it’s no excuse to allow a Republican to have taken that seat, especially one who was vowing to do them harm.

        May 29, 2013 at 12:06 pm

proof that no matter what they say in polls about policy, a good portion of voters vote on very superficial things: a guy who’s good-looking, uses his charm and claims that he’s just a regular guy ( his truck, remember?). Lots of people vote for someone they identify with, someone they would like to “take a beer with”.

And talking about Massachusetts, democrats have to be careful. Markey’s opponent is an ex-Navy seal and he looks the part: muscular, quite good-looking guy. He will play those cards to the max. Democrats will have to use a similar strategy as the one they used in the Warren campaign. Don’t make the race only about Markey. Make it also about supporting President Obama.

Switzerland takes step to end tax dispute with US

    JOHN HEILPRIN | May 29, 2013 10:06 AM EST |

    Compare other versions »
GENEVA — Switzerland took a strike Wednesday to end a long-running tax evasion dispute with the United States with the government’s announcement that it plans to let banks skirt the country’s strict client secrecy laws.

Without providing specific details of the proposals, Finance Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said Switzerland is acting now because U.S. patience with those Swiss banks suspected of aiding American tax cheats is running out.

She said the aim of the government’s planned deal is to “restore stability” to the Swiss banking industry, but that it will be up to the banks themselves to decide if they want to negotiate with U.S. authorities to settle legal disputes over suspected American tax evaders. The deal was agreed to by the Swiss Cabinet and will go to lawmakers in parliament for approval later this year.

As for Lipstick-gate – did you see that ‘spoof’ announcement from The Onion the other day, that they were closing down because the GOP were so ridiculous it was impossible to out-parody them?! I kind felt the same with that post, how do you out-parody the MSM?!

Truly, I know that we have to call out the lying, ridiculous MSM almost constantly…but a big part of me thinks that we should just make fun of their sorry asses sometimes, rather than get into a lather…we should laugh at them. They are THAT bad…..maybe they would get angry enough to do their jobs if we all treated them like the jokes they are. Who knows….I can’t imagine getting paid for constantly getting things WRONG all the time! Takers.Well….we pay congress and most of THEM get things wrong all the time, too. Shell Admits Real Reason Coast Guard Had To Rescue Its Arctic Drilling Rig: Failed Tax Avoidance Scheme

The main reason an offshore oil rig ran aground off the coast of Alaska late last year was because oil company Royal Dutch Shell was trying to depart state waters to avoid paying millions in taxes.
Sean Churchfield, operations manager for Royal Dutch Shell in Alaska, testified to the Coast Guard over the weekend that the Kulluk, an Arctic offshore drilling rig, left Dutch Harbor in December “driven by the economic factors.” When the Coast Guard’s legal advisor Lt. Cmdr. Brian McNamara asked why leaving by the end of the year was such a concern, Churchfield said:
“The end of the year to my understanding was when the tax liability potentially would have become effective.”

One of the main reasons that I could Never trust Chris Matthews. Bachmann was going to be defeated by a well known Woman who had Lost her son at 12 yrs old to a kidnapper in 1988/1989. Chris Matthews decided to be a dic_K and made Bachmann famous. This tape on Hardball catapulted Bachmann as the darling of the righties and brought Mega fund raising benefits to her. This helped her win in 2008 when she was on the ropes. Bachmann went on to squeak by and stayed there until now.

I hate what this world has become for workers. We’re on hospice watch for the pancreatic cancer of the father of a very close friend of mine. He managed to stay with us to be around for the high school and 8th grade graduations of his beloved granddaughters, who he and Grandma have helped raise. My friend just got a call from his mother to come home, and his wife – a close friend of mine – has to weigh whether to go home because she only gets three bereavement days from Canon. Now I love her but she has some emotional neurons missing, so I told her go home. They can afford a day’s loss of pay, and she should be with her husband, her daughters and these grandparents who have been there for them every step of the way.

But you can’t make your family a priority anymore. It’s absolutely sick and sucking the soul out of this country.

    • 104 57andfemale
      May 29, 2013 at 12:24 pm

Okay, now she’s just annoying me. She and her husband got ‘called out of meetings’ last night because Grandma thought Grandpa was slipping into a coma. Coma didn’t materialize so she’s unsure if she should jump for the call today and leave work.

The ‘meetings': a church book club and some gaming club that the husband belongs to.

I need more emotionally healthy friends.

  32. May 29, 2013 at 12:45 pm

    Morning Obots!

I feel SCADS better today. Amazing what an afternoon and evening of rest will do for you.

I had a brilliant idea on the way to work for my missus, on how she can both work and go to school for her RN so that the loans will be lessened: work home healthcare! She could set her own hours and work as much as she wanted to. Then that would be some part time income while she did school. Nice to see that my very expensive education comes in handy sometimes.

GB, if you’re reading, hang in there. It will all work out for the good.
