To quick for me! Found this MUST READ when I was answering Roberta’s question ( Roberta…go back to R/S…I did answer)

    http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Columns/2013/05/10/Why-Republicans-Really-Love-Budget-Deficits.aspx#page1

    • June 2, 2013 at 1:14 pm

I love to hear Bruce Bartlett analyze the Republicans. It is also instructive to study what David Stockman has to say. David Stockman was Reagan’s economic wizard and the architect of the trickle-down budgets. He wrote:

“The Reagan deficits were intentional, designed to cut revenue as a way of pressuring Congress to cut programs Republicans wanted to destroy….The plan… was to have a strategic deficit that would give you an argument for cutting back the programs that weren’t desired….”

Soooooooo worth watching. Pres. Obama really picked some wonderful people.

It’s a great forum UT, I watched the live stream at Axelrod’s UC school of government last week….he is building something to compete and I assume surpass the Kennedy School at Harvard….

UT, I watched the entire segment you posted on R&S! I was really impressed with all these wonderful young people. They are not only smart, but they are also down to earth with great sense of humor. It was so good to see a MSM moderator who was not obsessed with asking questions based on GOP talking points.

Concur nathkatun7. This is what makes it so wonderful and exciting times for all of us here in the TOD family who helped to make this all come together for all of these great people.

Plus they loved working for this President, and we all know that the fundamental reason is the core of who POB is each day of his life. You usually can tell how the house is being run by the head of the house.

Thanks UT for posting this video. We continue to lift Axe up in our prayers and thoughts for heading this forum at UC. Keeping things moving and allowing these wonderful young people to move in and with this presidency that is and will be so wonderful for years and centuries to follow.

I am so happy that Our TOD family had a great part in the lives of these beautiful people. Much work to be done to spread the word.HZ

Yes Indeed HZ! For me I get really excited when I see young people with so much wisdom, enthusiasm, and realism. Our brilliant Utaustinliberal, and many other young people at TOD, are, of course, in the same category. The GOP and the media may be able to fool some people (and I emphasize SOME) in my age group, but I don’t think they will be able to easily fool many of these smart and savvy young people to abandon President Obama.

wonder if john kerry would ever consider a presidential run again? he’d be one of the older presidents now. i think he’s done more already than hillary did as s.o.s. always liked the guy and just too bad he doesn’t have the dynamism to dominate in a national campaign. plus, he hired bob shrum as his campaign guy in 2004. shrum is good at commentary on tv, but he track record of running campaigns, on the national level at least, is pretty bad.

I have great respect for SOS Kerry but his age, his Iraq vote, his selection of John Edwards as his running mate, and his overall crummy campaign would probably prevent him from running again. He has had a marvelous life and career capped off as SOS.

    • 29 hopefruit2
      June 2, 2013 at 1:13 pm

I think he’s happy in his current post and doesn’t want the hassle of running for President. And as Bill said, I don’t think circumstances are favorable to a successful presidential bid. His legacy as SOS will be just fine.

Thank you so much for this LovelyPlains! Somehow I missed this funny and endearing story. Now I know why I admire President Obama so much. Like him, I never know exactly which tie to wear. But that’s because I rarely wear ties. From now on I will give both John Kerry and Robert Gibbs credit for the rise of President Obama on the National stage. John Kerry for selecting him as the keynote speaker at the DNC’s 2004 Convention, and Robert Gibbs for lending him the pretty tie he wore when he delivered that electrifying speech.

Thanks so much for sharing this very important information, desertflower. That is what I meant in my comment to you.
Also I get daily those issues that I am deeply interested in from the DOJ sent to my email box. Then I share them with friends in different states who meet (retired, but have younger family members about in the world) daily for coffee and chat time.

I find it very good to keep them informed of the issues that our DOJ Department are solving all the time under the directions of our wonderful and decent AG, Eric Holder.

I like for us to have this type of information to bring before people who are always putting our DOJ down in always in a negative light. This is when you need to have people point people like the ‘chatter heads on cable stations when they are yelling like Tweety does at his guest about “Give me a number of a bill etc, Like we always say here, “Link please.” I love that about Chips and our TOD family.

((((( Love you my dear one))))) Enjoy your time off. Also enjoy your summer tutoring. Very fortunate students. HZ

I highly recommend this in-depth look at what’s going on in Chicago (likely similar stories in other big cities)—–about the anti-eviction campaign, moving the homeless into vacant properties, all the problems and new solutions, told from different vantages—-the community activists, the mayor etc. I was particularly interested because of the frequent references and tie ins to Cabrini-Green where I worked for many years. Was there near the beginning when that public housing project was new and sparkling and held promise—–and watched the whole thing deteriorate over time with the increase and permeation of drug use wrecked any promise there, along with negligence by city officials—–it spiraled out of control and not everyone agrees but I was glad to see those buildings come down—–a costly experiment that failed. A bad idea. Anyhoo—-a powerful piece of writing—-complicated issues ——but encouraging prospects for the future with many—–from different corners, all devoted to Chicago— determined to persevere in finding solutions—–and that just skims the surface of the content.

      June 2, 2013 at 2:57 pm

Carolyn, what an incredible perspective you bring to this issue, having been part of the Cabrini-Green project from the beginning. I may be misremembering this, but wasn’t there a time in the late 80′s or so, when there was a flurry of self-government and crime watch at Cabrini-Green that turned things around for a while? I thought I remember Jack Hemp in his old HUD days talking about this as the wave of the future. Guess that movement couldn’t hold back against the tide of drugs and crime.

SOS Kerry is in fine form and is doing America proud.

On another note, I couldn’t help but notice that the media went out of its way to play up the fact that the Boston Bombers were foreign (even lying to prove a point with CNN’s “dark-skinned” descriptor); yet, very little has been made on cable TV of the fact that the Boston Marathan WINNER is foreign AND dark-skinned.

I haven’t heard Chris Matthews or John King rave about how this dark-skinned immigrant from East Africa displayed such a wonderful act of kindness by returning his hard-won medal to the victims….I’m still waiting….

Tweety has been raving about why The President dies t talk about jobs?
It’s an amazing question, considering the GOP and the media are the ones in collusion to drown out any such conversation.
He says lets get a 4 trillion dollar infrastructure bill put on the floor and then called the President squeamish for not doing so.
4 trillion, he says just fight for it, like Truman fought for healthcare.
      Truman???
He also said in Friday that immigration reform is ok, it doesn’t really help everybody only a small portion of the country.
      His words not mine.

I just can’t get worked up about a guy who’s ratings are in tidy bowl land. Since his debut Matthews has never gotten out of the basement. Meaning only his cronies in the green room are listening and even then it’s touch and go.

          June 2, 2013 at 2:28 pm

I email Chris Matthews and I came right out and ask him if he was having some mental issues because the way he talks sometimes it makes you wonder. I told him he doesn’t need to be on tv for two hours. And I told Matthews that he knows dam well if President Obama were to do what he said, put forth a 4 trillion dollar infrastructure bill these sorry ass Republicans would block it. So the purpose of putting it forth would be what.

I really love SOS Kerry. All his experience is now shining thru. FayPax, your grandmother’s story is beyond words. My heart hurts. The fact that this is not in our history books is our own blindness to what we have been. We can’t change the future until we know about our past.

The other day posters were talking about the old TV Series such as The Thorn Birds. I never got into that one, my two were Roots and Shogun. Well today on Encore they are playing all 6 episodes of Shogun so I am working around the house watching. My husband also loved this series. Now back to my cleaning and watching TV.

    Incredible Smartypants. http://immasmartypants.blogspot.com/2013/06/why-i-still-have-ag-holders-back.html

If you look up at the top of this blog, you’ll see a tab titled DOJ Watch. I started that one back in January 2011 for many reasons. But it was triggered by this article in the New York Times that reflected on what would change as a result of the 2010 midterm election with control of the House going to the Republicans.
When the Obama administration wakes up next month to a divided capital, no cabinet member will be facing a more miserable prospect of oversight hearings and subpoenas than Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.

Mr. Holder is a particularly juicy target because he presides over issues that have served as recurrent fodder for political controversy — including using the criminal justice system for terrorism cases, and federal enforcement of civil rights and immigration laws.

More than most administration officials, he has served as a proxy for Republican attacks on what they see as President Obama’s left-leaning agenda.
What the article didn’t mention – but I was painfully aware of at the time – is that AG Holder had also been under attack from the purity left since day one of the Obama administration for not prosecuting Bush/Cheney for torture.

Thanks for the link, DF. Smartypants has such a common sense perspective, she is a terrific antidote to all the DC lunacy. I especially liked Tien Le’s comment about PBO not giving a second’s thought to what the silly left wants. He, more than anyone, appreciates what AG Holder is doing and will always do right by him.

    http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal-a/2013_06/the_10_biggest_conservative_sc045053.php Almost 5 years of this BS….

With most of the right convinced that Barack Obama is the most corrupt president since Nixon, or maybe Harding, or probably Of All Time, conservative media just can’t resist a good scandal. And it’s killing them. From deliberately cooked-up lies, to garbled reporting, to failures of the most basic due diligence, there’s scarcely a breath between one conservative media faceplant and the next. Even Erick Erickson recognizes the damage this behavior is doing to the Republican brand, but so far at least, the right can’t help itself.

    http://www.politicususa.com/government-good-government-ideology-fractures-republican-party.html

There are many Americans who lack a basic understanding of what government is except to complain it is an organization exerting control over the population, but obviously it is much more than a source of power over the people. Government is necessary to enforce policy and provide services that positively affect nearly every human activity in important ways despite conservative’s belief it is inherently evil and worthy of elimination. Over the past four-and-a-half years, Republicans have actively campaigned on, and promoted, an anti-government agenda regardless the myriad benefits to the entire population, and their goal in eliminating government is to eliminate as many of the benefits and services to the majority of people as they can. However, some Republicans who decry the federal government as too big, too expensive, and too overreaching are the first in line for federal funding if it is politically expedient, and besides hypocrisy, it shows the necessity of the government they are wont to eliminate.

  26. June 2, 2013 at 3:20 pm

    Good Sunday afternoon TOD peeps.

Alright, today is wash and fold day. Gonna wash every piece of dirty clothing I got (and some that just need washing cause I ain’t worn em in a while).

Also, to play a little bit of consumer’s advocate, don’t let nobody tell ya that the “thread count” on your bed sheets don’t matter. If you anyone says so, you call em “a dirty ratfinkin’ liar!”. When I got my new mattress I bought so new sheets. Back in DFW, I usually never bought less than 400 count sheets, but hey, I call myself trying to be cheap, so this time around, I bought some cheap lil 200 count (maybe less) sheets from Wal-Mart. Well let me tell ya, this maybe TMI, but I hate sleeping in pajama bottoms. I like my skin of my legs to touch the sheet…lol But damn if those 200 count sheets weren’t rough as hell. So I had to sleep with PJ bottoms on every night just to keep from scratching myself…lol.

Let’s just I went out to buy some higher counts sheets ASAP.

    • 92 desertflower
      June 2, 2013 at 3:24 pm

:) Yes…thread count, counts! Buy the best you can afford….the higher the thread count, the better! 200 thread count…might as well be sleeping on the lawn:)

    • 93 Vicki
      June 2, 2013 at 4:08 pm

It is not the thread count that matters. It is the length of the fibers.
So 200 count pure Egyptian cotton is what Frette and other super-luxury brands use.

Yes, if you are buying supima cotton or percale then 300 is better than 200 and 400 is softer than 300.
But, again, the real trick is the kind of fiber rather than the thread count.
Look for Egyptian cotton. It is by far the best!! Long grain makes softest fabric.

(A PSA from a TOD consumer.)

      • 94 desertflower

Not possible for me either. What is possible is looking in discount stores like Century 21 near me for Egyptian cotton. No fancy label but the right kind of cotton.
or also in discount stores look for Bellino an Italian brand that uses great cotten. Sometimes you can get great bargains on Bellino on line .

Frette is impossibly expensive even discounted.
