My eyes are playing tricks on me too, Africa. I must be losing my eyesight in my old age. I could swear that yesterday I saw two women nominated by the President to serve on the D.C. Appeals Court, and today I saw two women with the President, one he selected to serve as National Security Advisor and the other he nominated to be U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

If you haven’t yet, go read Spandan’s (formerly Deaniac) new piece on TPV.

  12. June 5, 2013 at 7:15 pm

    From Spandan:

June is LGBT pride month. I have no intention of demanding anything less than full legal equality for all people – gay, straight, bisexual, transgender, men, women. But I will not stand by while “activists” in my community try to malign the president who has been the most effective advocate of LGBT equality we have ever had in the White House. I will not stand by while “columnists” from our community try to tell me why the party with marriage equality in their platform deserves to be shunned while the party with support for anti-sodomy laws deserves a second look. I will not tolerate it when in the process of asking for respect for ourselves, we disrespect the First Lady who’s been our ally through thick and thin. I will not tolerate treating our best allies like they were our enemies.

I’m good. Didn’t get a session today but I have officially moved to the physical therapy floor. Starting tomorrow, my sessions will be more intense (even tho I was told by others that it would be a slow progressions). In any case, the staff on this floor is trained to get me more mobile and independent.

There I was, sitting at the bottom of the other thread, patiently taking I don’t how long to write a comment regarding LL’s brilliant post, then posting a tweet, only to discover this thing opened up and I didn’t even hear the creaking of the door’s hinges. So suffer folks, here is my paean to LL:

LL, I feel I am getting to be a recording, but once again a brilliant piece of writing. It inspires me to try my hand at it. Not sure if I will though.

The story of privilege goes beyond privilege due to wealth or privilege due to race. There is the sense that many on the left (and here I speak more of the followers of those such as Markos, Arriana and others), who think that because they voted for PBO he should do what they want. That is also a sense of privilege. It is the privilege of obligation, the sense that I did this for you so now you are obligated to do what I want.

We are privileged to have a President (and here privilege is used in the appropriate sense) who actual views his role as being a President of the entire countr and sincerely does things that he sees as a benefit to all (well almost all). Additionally, too many on both sides of the political scene actually not only that the President can rule by fiat but that he/she should do so. The right keeps expecting him to, which scares the dickens out of them and the left demands he do so. (Again, speaking of a specific subsection of each.)

Fortunately, we have a President who not only cares about the entire country, but also believes in the Constitution, something his predecessor did not.

    And here is the tweet.

    • June 5, 2013 at 7:31 pm

Thank you sir, and your tweet is spot on.

    • June 5, 2013 at 7:38 pm

Respects the Constitution, voters, his colleagues, his core supporters. We are very fortunate indeed.

I second your comments on LL’s post which I am very late to just getting home from work. Brilliant post. And so agree with your comments about how POTUS views his position of power; not taking advantage of it and deciding to do what’s good for the few or the blue states or for a certain race or religion or gender but what he sees would be good for all Americans. That’s much easier to campaign on than actually do; but Barack Obama in the past 5 years have never lost sight of that and we witness it with every step he takes; every move he makes. :) Sorry! I have that line of the song in my head that insists on being written.

That is devious and shocking, if true. How do you know about the founding by the southern racist Republicans to diminish support for PBO. I can’t find anything about this. I am the total opposite of southern and racist and libertarian and Republican, but I find The Family creepy and cultish and can never figure out why every president, including President Obama, has to dutifully trot off to the prayer breakfast every year. The founders and current members of this secret fellowship are radical, extremist Christians, with a goal of not only influencing our government but governments around the world—–that they do not believe in separation of church and state is an understatement. They teach the lessons of Hitler—-they’re big admirers of Hitler and his grip and control of the people—-holocaust doesn’t bother them—-because he was such an excellent, powerful leader. Also are fond of Lenin and Mao. These are our worst nightmare type people. Never could figure out why Hillary got all involved with them also before her presidential run. The whole deal gives me nightmares. And that’s not even getting into the gay thing in Uganda—–but there is horrible truth in that too.

Dotster, please clarify: What is devious and shocking if true – GetEqual’s founding history, or that PBO attends prayer breakfast?

        • June 5, 2013 at 8:34 pm

Won’t speak for Dotster, needless to say Hopefruit, but the most uncomfortable day of the year for me is when PBO attends that prayer breakfast – I understand why he is does it, I can just imagine the reaction if he didn’t, but the whole thing and the people behind it *are* seriously creepy.

          • 56 hopefruit2
            June 5, 2013 at 8:56 pm

The fact that “The Family” has unsavory associations does not warrant anyone painting PBO as a “supporter of antigay legislation” simply because he attends a national prayer breakfast – which happens to be part of his job description as President of the United States. That was disingenuous and unfair of GetEqual to use this to attack PBO.

Many people whom I otherwise respect and admire including singer/songwriter Bono and now deceased Mother Teresa, have participated in this breakfast as keynote speakers. Should we believe that these individuals endorse the hateful ideology and practices of the founders of the “Family?”

        • 57 dotster3
          June 5, 2013 at 8:46 pm

Get Equal’s devious founding history—-portraying themselves as your every day gay rights org. and they’re really have ulterior motives? Not shocked about prayer breakfast because I know about it. Not happy about it either. Like I said, I think it’s creepy to the max.

        June 5, 2013 at 8:33 pm

“How do you know about the founding by the southern racist Republicans to diminish support for PBO. I can’t find anything about this.”

You don’t have to find anything about it, but I was able to put 2 and 2 together based on various sources of info. These are some variation of the Log Cabin Republicans.

        1. The two original founders came from Red states in the deep south (Mississippi and Tennessee).
        2. They were silent throughout GWB’s presidency and formed in 2010, partnered with drama king and self-identified Libertarian Dan Choi in the chaining to WH fence.

        3. The vitriol that this group directs at President Obama, and to a lesser extent Democrats is virtually absent when it comes to the Republicans. They only mention Republicans ocassionally when they feel a need to disguise their motives or cover their asses.

        4. The propaganda on their website is mostly anti-Obama, anti-Democrat, and based on lies, distortions, exaggerations, etc. Nothing based in fact.

A lot of people have talked about how the announcements today are PBO giving the finger to the GOP. But it is far more than that. It is a continuation of his foriegn policy speech. These two women believe in the US being a leader in the world against genocide and thus favor intervention. However, they do not believe that all interventions should be military nor should they be unilateral.

They and PBO believe that our nation’s best interest is tied to what is happening throughout the world and that we need to be smart and effective in whatevr we do. (More later, wife just got home so I have to serve dinner).

      June 5, 2013 at 7:48 pm

japa…..absolutely correct. This president would never make appointments to get in the face of anyone. He made those appointments to further his foreign policy, and if people had actually listened to his foreign policy speech, they could figure it out. He is never about getting even……however, those on the right are, so they just assume he is.
      Thanks for this clarity.

      • 80 jackiegrumbacher
        June 5, 2013 at 9:37 pm

Once again, Carolyn, it’s GOP projection. They would make retaliatory appointments so they assume the president would. The president chooses who’s best for the job. If the Republicans think it’s a spit in the eye, it’s on them, not the president. I’m sure that Amb. Rice was always intended for this position. It was the Republican fantasy that she, not Kerry, would be nominated for SOS.

      • June 5, 2013 at 10:23 pm

I agree with you guys here – I don’t believe PBO would make appointments/decisions to get in the face of his detractors BUT, I’m not going to lie, IT FEELS REALLY SWEET WHEN HIS DECISIONS DO.

‘Take that, you GOP & Media idjits! And this! And that!

The truth as I see it is THEY are so opposed to doing what’s right for the majority that they stand in his way, and PBO’s so determined to do the right thing that he can’t help but jab them in the ribs as he moves #FORWARD. [And I/we can't help but laugh and urge him on.]

I doubt the media will ever understand that PBO does NOT give the finger to anyone – that is the role of the GOP and their bff the media. The President appoints people who can do the job – the GOP doesn’t like that at all.

Really hope that @AnnieLowrey and the NYT get called out for her ridiculous and INCORRECT article about the lack of women in this President’s administration. Why is he held up to the standard of Jesus Christ (literally) and the bar that the Bushes had to clear was to either not choke on a pretzel or vomit in the lap of a Foreign PM ala GHWB in Japan.

        Excellent tweet hf!!

Just shows how lame these people are. Ambassador Rice sat at the table in Cabinet meetings as a full member of the President’s Cabinet. Samatha Power was a key member of the NSC team. They have new positions because of their skills, period.

Fact is, a bunch of yakking #NEWSTAINERS and bloggers are irrelevant to the entire process because, as the President has made very clear, he doesn’t listen to any of them.

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet,
8.5 inches. That’s an exceedingly odd number.

Why was that gauge used? Because that’s the way they built them in England and English expatriates built the US railroads.

Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that’s the gauge they used.

Why did ‘they’ use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing.

Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England , because that’s the spacing of the wheel ruts.

So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (and England ) for their legions. The roads have been used ever since.

And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. (Bureaucracies live forever.)

So the next time you are handed a Specification/ Procedure/ Process and wonder ‘What horse’s ass came up with it?’ you may be exactly right.

Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses’ asses.) Now, the twist to the story:

When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah . The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses’ behinds.

So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world’s most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse’s ass.

And you thought being a horse’s ass wasn’t important? Ancient horse’s asses control almost everything….and CURRENT Horses Asses are controlling everything else!!

Okay, Amk, so why aren’t you on the latest thread? I need to know what I did wrong with my Firefox cleaning today. Meet me on the newer thread and I’ll explain further.

Please excuse the length of this, but this came to my inbox and I wanted to share it…there are SO many people here that would be wonderful at this:)

Every day, ColorOfChange members are volunteering and organizing to make a difference in our communities. Now, we have the chance to multiply the impact of this powerful community engagement by taking our voices to the airwaves. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is about to license thousands of new community radio stations across the country, and is expected to make applications available this month.

Community radio is a powerful tool for amplifying the voices of everyday people and propelling social change. Together, we have a rare and critical opportunity to massively expand Black radio ownership in this country, while bringing the work of our best community organizations to a whole new level. For the very first time, the FCC will be licensing new stations in urban areas,1 where dense populations can mean tens of thousands of listeners. And no prior experience in radio is needed to apply.

Imagine what your community could do with a radio station: sign up now to learn how ColorOfChange can help you prepare a successful broadcast license application and get on the air.
In the 1960s and ’70s, local Black radio stations served as the political and social drumbeat of Black communities. At WERD Atlanta, the nation’s first Black-owned station, DJ “Jockey Jack” Gibson made a habit of slipping political news and commentary between record plays. Broadcasting directly above the offices of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Gibson was also known to lower his mic out the window to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. whenever Dr. King wanted to make a statement on air.2

Influential local Black stations like WERD were largely pushed off the dial after Congress deregulated the airwaves in 1996, ushering in an era of massive media ownership consolidation.3 Deep-pocketed corporations were given the green light to buy up thousands of stations at once, and corporate owners slashed local programming and music in favor of nationally-syndicated content that could be cheaply and easily re-broadcast to all their stations.4,5 Today, just 3 percent of commercial radio stations are Black-owned.6 Unsurprisingly, corporate-owned media fails to fully represent Black folks’ talents, values, aspirations and struggles — but we don’t have to settle for what corporate media decides to air.

If Black folks and our allies take advantage of this milestone opportunity, the solid organizing and local news gathering that is already taking place neighbor-to-neighbor on our communities’ streets can touch countless additional lives. Radio’s reach and popularity has the power to be transformative: twice as many people get their news from radio as from the TV evening news on ABC, NBC and CBS combined.7 And audiences who tune in to community radio in particular tend to be loyal supporters, listening for longer periods than to commercial radio and keeping their radio dials fixed on these stations.8

This will likely be the last time in a generation we’ll have the chance to ensure we’re represented on the radio dial. Please join ColorOfChange in making the most of this moment: sign up today for help in bringing local radio to your community.
