Excellent choices in Susan Rice and Samantha Power

Yes and it’s great that the Rethugs can’t do a dang thing to impede Rice’s appointment. Power is a different story though.

Beautiful smile. Smart and intelligent woman who deserves this moment.
Congratulations Susan Rice for standing tall, staying calm, supporting PBO with grace while the attacks upon you were vicious and vile and most definitely unworthy.
      Keep smiling……

if you’ve never read Samantha Powers’ “A Problem From Hell”, please do. It catalogs all the crimes of the 20th century, and how hard it was to agree on what “genocide” meant.

NEW YORK — A New York appeals court is allowing some emergency contraception pills to be sold without a prescription or age restrictions while the government argues the issue in court.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan issued a brief order Wednesday. The court says two-pill versions of emergency contraception can be sold without restrictions while it decides the merits of a federal government appeal.

The court did agree to suspend implementation of a Brooklyn judge’s order that one-pill products such as Plan B One-Step be sold without restriction. It said the suspension will remain in effect until the appeals court rules on the merits of the arguments later this year.

Brooklyn Judge Edward Korman issued his ruling April 5.

[OT, but I'm having a blast w/ all these wonderful nominations! Here's a tid-bit on Judge Wilkins]:

A federal judge President Barack Obama wants to promote to the appellate bench successfully sued the Maryland State Police for racial profiling after his family was pulled over and searched for drugs while driving back from a funeral.

The 1992 search has been at the center of two decades of litigation that’s become known as the “driving while black” case. U.S. District Judge Robert Wilkins has shown an unyielding effort to combat racial profiling in drug stops through three subsequent lawsuits, the final one ultimately decided just this year.

Susan Rice is 48 years of age, and Samantha Power is 42 years of age. Not too shabby for 40 somethings.

No acknowledgment from the MSM of two young women being named to these most powerful and important positions.

      • 39 Bill
        June 5, 2013 at 3:43 pm

In my humble opinion the 40′s are the best years. One has developed some wisdom and experience, and one still has many productive years ahead.

        • June 5, 2013 at 3:44 pm

I’ve come to that conclusion. Then again, I’m in my 40s.

          • 41 carolyn
            June 5, 2013 at 4:08 pm

I agree with the observation about the strength of the 40s, for the reasons given. I think this was plainly shown in both the last two presidential elections. In addition to the quality of the two candidates in each election, President Obama’s age was a definite strength. I’m way on the other side of even the 50s….and remember how much energy, creativity, passion, efficiency I had in the 40s and 50s. No matter what people try to say, 70 is not the new 40!
I have a personal example from my college. For nine years our president was a creative, intelligent man in his late 40s into early 50s. We soared as a school. He left and went on to other things.
Since 1989, we have had one president. He was 49 when he took over, and for the first ten years he did well. However, he is now 72, and he has atrophied. He is hanging on because it is a good gig with good money and retirement. The school is stuck in the mud, but he has the trustees buffaloed. Morale among faculty is low, enrollment is stagnant, and much more. He was never a fireball, but has stopped growing.
I know this doesn’t happen with everyone, but the prime years for important service are the 20 years between 40 and 60.
Much as I love Joe Biden, and have a certain respect for Hillary, they are too old to take on the stresses of being president. We need new blood, and experience with vision.

              June 5, 2013 at 4:31 pm

I think for the reasons you give to your president is why so many remain in the House and the Senate.

            • June 5, 2013 at 4:32 pm

I definitely agree with the conclusion you shared in your last two sentences, Carolyn. I think it would be a step ‘backward’ if either one became president in 2016. They should be willing to mentor and share their expertise, but I do believe they are ‘too old to take on the stresses of the presidency. Just looking at Hillary’s face in a 2008 video that was shared earlier and her face when she left SoS office and I see a vast difference.

Yes, and remember a few months ago when we had to hear about how President Obama only appoints/nominates White men?

      • 46 nathkatun7
        June 5, 2013 at 4:43 pm

Don’t be surprised, pkayden, if tomorrow the new meme is that he is not appointing white men. Yesterday he nominated two white women and a black man for the D.C. Appeals Court. Today he selected a black woman as the National Security Adviser and a white woman as the U.N. Ambassador. Those in the media, as well as some members of CBC, who were accusing him of not appointing women and blacks are conveniently silent.

    • 47 jackiegrumbacher
      June 5, 2013 at 5:10 pm

Bill, don’t expect any acknowledgment from our laughable media. They’ve already trivialized the appointment of these two brilliant women as nothing but an attempt by the president to “stick it to the GOP,” as if it’s just a petty insult, rather than a positive step forward for our foreign policy. The media sees everything from the GOP viewpoint and never places any decision by our president in a larger context. Small minds, petty reporting.

Lawrence O’Donnell featured McDermott on his show last night and he’s a sharp dude. Love the way he emphasized that the real “scandal” was that T’Baggers get a tax exemption at all since they are strictly political organizations. Keep telling the truth, McDermott. The appointment of Dr. Rice is not his choice and no one cares less about his “skepticism.” When the president ‘assigns’ her to the role of National Security Advisor, McCain and all other members of Congress either work with her or stay out of the loop.

Then From Fox’s Ed Henry on Amb Rice:
Henry: You described (Rice) as one of the most qualified, experienced foreign policy experts in America. If that’s the case, how did she get the information on Benghazi so wrong five days after the attack?

Carney: Ed, I would welcome the opportunity to correct the record especially for some news outlets who persist in misrepresenting the facts. You have seen the so-called talking points. You have seen the testimony of the deputy director of the CIA and the documents that demonstrate that the central point that they made was drafted in the first instance and every instance thereafter.

Henry: Then why did various intelligence officers say that they almost immediately knew that this was terror and if she’s so experienced why wouldn’t she see that as they saw it?

Carney: So you are suggesting that a senior member of the national security team should disagree with the assessments of the intelligence community because somebody appeared on Fox News and said something?

He would have won the nomination and the presidency. He would have healed wounds, rather than exacerbated them. Instead we got the detestable Richard Nixon.

I don’t know if this has been posted yet but here it is from The Daily Beast.

    Obama Unbound

In choosing Susan Rice and Samantha Power, the president made clear that he no longer cares what the GOP thinks about his foreign policy. Peter Beinart on the huge implications of this shift.

By appointing Susan Rice as his new national-security adviser and Samantha Power to represent the U.S. at the United Nations, Barack Obama is practically shouting a message to the Washington GOP: “I’m no longer afraid of you.”

Exactly, pf, this is an invented PBO that only exists in their minds. The president has appointed highly qualified people to important posts. End of story. Why should he care what Republicans think? Did George Bush care what Democrats thought when he appointed that crazy, UN hater, John Bolton, to be UN Ambassador and made the US an international laughing stock? Why wasn’t that a story?
