AHMAHGAHD VERIZON HAZ MAH INFOS OH NOOOES!!

AHMAHGAHD VERIZON HAZ MAH INFOS OH NOOOES!!

yes. it’s called your phone bill.

130200413680

Here’s how it works:

The US makes a backup copy of the telecom records. They can’t access that info without a FISA warrant, unlike what Bush did – warrantless everyfrakingthing…. and actual wiretapping. That’s not what’s happening now. No one in the US GOV cares that you are addicted to Facebook. However, HBO (a private corporation) cares that you’re downloading Game of Thrones illegally. There’s a difference.

Most people aren’t really processing what Snowdon said; that he could wiretap/listen/access whatever… not that he did, or that anyone else has ever or that it’s going on OMG constantly to OMG everyone in the US 24/7, yet that’s how the OMG-HAIR-ON-FIRE media is making it out. I’m curious how Snowdon’s private sector employer feels about their, uhm, employee.

It’s funny, but how the frak did this Snowdon guy, get a $200k a year gig in Hawaii with no high school diploma, and never finishing a single computer class, in the first place? Seriously, I’m more qualified than he is. And how does he know exactly what he can and cannot do, when I’m not sure how much of a grasp he really has on how the technology works….. and why it might be necessary…. having been at that job for only a short time? I’ve just got a whole problem with this dude’s story. I’m not saying what he leaked was completely inaccurate, but since the media has very little interest these days in anything more than pouring gasoline on the fire of their own hysteria, and actually researching a story for accuracy, that I have my doubts.

Here’s the deal….

Private companies can be owned by anyone. A Saudi Prince, An American douche, Mitt Romney, assholes like the Kochs,  Richard Murdoch, Carrot Top, Steven Seagal, China, or some rich spoiled yahoo in North Korea, who might not have the best interest of the security of the American people and the US GOV in mind.

So let’s say a terror cell in….. oh, I don’t know, let’s say Syria….., gets blown up, and when the CIA goes through the rubble, they find a cell phone, and discover a US phone number attached to that phone, that that phone called to, or received a call from, or both. Then the US GOV would ask for a FISA warrant to look at that US phone number’s records. Was it just a wrong number/butt dial, or is that number in their contacts? Did they speak for 10 seconds, or an hour? Was it once, or 30 times?

Now with that knowledge, are you okay with our NSA/CIA/FBI going after the bad guys, or do you want your privacy more than your technology and security? Europe has less privacy with CCTV cameras everywhere, and intense gun regulations. They have less crime than we do measured in parsecs.

Of course Verizon knows where you are, because your cell phone has google maps on it, or Find My iPhone, or several other countless apps you’ve voluntarily downloaded onto your smartphone, that require GPS, and want to “use your location.”

One of the callers this morning on The Stephanie Miller show said it really simply: (paraphrasing) You have the right to privacy in your home, and in your person. But once you voluntarily reach outside either of those, with a phone line, internet, cell phone, you’ve gone outside your home, and are using the public communication grid AT WILL.

If the US GOV had live humans going through all your ‘meta’ data as routine work, i.e. reading your emails, listening to you complain about your crazy Facebook stalker, or how bad your cousins’s meatloaf was last night, instead of computer algorithms looking for trigger words associated with know terrorist information, when a FISA warrant is issued, we’d have ZERO unemployment, and still wouldn’t have enough bodies to fill every position to listen to/watch what everyone is doing….

But to act pearl-clutchingly Lindsey Graham + Glenn Greenwald’s love baby SHOCKED like the ZOMFG people are doing over this, makes me laugh. Have they never thought about their own phone bill beyond paying it? Yet they’re the first to complain about who dropped the ball on the Boston Marathon bombers.

You really want your privacy? Fine. Empty your bank account, cancel your credit cards and cable/satellite TV/internet, and move to the sticks, to a property with a well, and land that’s self-sustaining. All communication devices are voluntary. Plenty of people don’t have phones, cell or otherwise, just like Bin Laden. And make sure you have solar power, and a rain cistern with a hose and pump so you can try to save your house from burning down when it’s struck by lightening. Living in a community has it’s perks, and is also voluntary.

BOOM! Thank you Tally for telling it like it IS. And I bet you – those most vocal about NSA would be the last ones to give up any of these conveniences. So far I have not gotten a single response from any one I asked “well what better way do you have of monitoring terrorist activity without violating SOME privacy?”

    Here’s the exchange: (57Female)

Let me get this straight: the taxpayer not only pays these outrageous salaries (how many post-graduate degree workers would LOVE to earn $200,000/year, rather than this H.S. and community college drop out), but also pays DIVIDENDS to stockholders, on the taxpayer dime. Their goal is profit, whereas if these jobs were returned to civil servants, the goal would be the protection of the United States. Give me my public employees back.

Let’s remember to ask Hillary if she approved of the privatization on steroids initiated by her husband and Al Gore. Then we had CEO-in-Chief of effing Halliburton to run up wars for his companies, and there was no way PBO could put that genie back in the bottle.

But let’s have that conversation, and let’s have it now, effing ‘deficit hawks’. You care about what the government spends? How about not turning over security clearances to bottom-line shareholders and give the jobs back to patriots.

    THIS is the scandal.

    (me)
You’re absolutely right that that is the scandal. Our half ass media is missing the entire thing! Just for shits and giggles…(bear with me) let’s try this on. Here’s a guy that has no education to speak of, worked for BA for 3 months, had TS stuff come across his desk….in what planet would this be ok?
We know the Carlye Group has ties to Bin Laden family and Saudi’s http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/iron-triangle-the-carlyle-group-2/

We also know that PBO has spoken AT LENGTH recently about scaling back Presidential powers, wanting to close Gitmo, can’t be a country of perpetual wars….We need to LISTEN TO HIM.

Maybe, the stuff that Snowden saw, in the employ of his private contractor…..blew his mind…not so much from the govt is evil side…but from the other side! The side of the private contractor that has all this power and access and whose ONLY money and contracts came from the US govt! There is a huge revolving door of slop and the American taxpayers are getting fleeced! Not so much by the govt, but these private contractors with the NO BID CONTRACTS (Dudette’s links) It’s a HUGE gravytrain…and certain people don’t want it to stop! Why else would a 29yo with no education and a dream job in Hawaii and a $200,000/yr salary risk everything? He’s never going to have that again. Ever. This is deep down rotten. The media, once again, is not focusing on the big picture…it is mesmerized by the shiny object meant to distract. We need to connect the dots here. Soon.

With all the emoprogs saying this is 1984 I read somewhere that Orwell once said his “1984” was an over reaction to the wartime necessities in the UK. He said he over did it with his exaggerations and the actual measures were rational under the circumstances. I am not an expert on Orwell, but I would bet he would be a PBO supporter.

Poitras has an axe to grind. And she’s been collaborating with Glenzilla for a quite a while. From wiki:

She co-directed, produced, and shot her 2003 documentary. Flag Wars, about gentrification in Columbus, Ohio. It received a Peabody Award, Best Documentary at both the 2003 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival and the Seattle Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and the Filmmaker Award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. The film also launched the 2003 PBS POV series. It was nominated for a 2004 Independent Spirit Award and a 2004 Emmy Award.[2]

Poitras’ other films include Oh say can you see… (2003) and Exact Fantasy (1995).[2] Her 2006 film My Country, My Country about life for Iraqis under U.S. occupation was nominated for an Academy Award. Her 2010 film The Oath, about two Yemenis men caught up in America’s War on Terror, won the “Excellence in Cinematography Award for U.S. Documentary” at the 2010 Sundance film festival.[4]

The two films are part of a trilogy. The third part will focus on how the War on Terror increasingly focuses on Americans through surveillance, covert activities and attacks on whistleblowers. Poitras says her work has been hampered by constant harassment by border agents during more than three dozen border crossings into and out of the United States. She has been detained for hours and interrogated and agents have seized her computer, cell phone and reporters notes and not returned them for weeks. Once she was threatened with being refused entry back into the United States.[5] In response to a Glenn Greenwald article about this, a group of film directors started a petition to protest the government’s actions against her.[6] In April 2012 Poitras was interviewed about surveillance on Democracy Now and called elected leaders behavior “shameful.”[7]

(Reading that 3rd paragraph above) Aaaah! Like Gigi, and today’s GOP leadership, and the MSM, Poitras decides what the end product will be then goes looking for evidence to fit! So she and Gigi were coaching Snowden as to what he should find/take? I can’t wait for all the little pieces of real evidence to fall in place, and I sure don’t want any harm to befall Snowden before this can happen.

    WTH? I’m speechless!

    http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/06/10/supreme-court-affirms-rumsfelds-immunity-from-torture-lawsuits/

“The earlier ruling was so broad that it applied to all military officials, including the individuals who carried out torture. The Supreme Court rejected an appeal of that ruling on Monday without comment, solidifying the lower court’s opinion that military officials are immune to civil lawsuits over torture. The lawsuit sprang from the internment of two Americans, Donald Vance and Nathan Ertel, who worked for an Iraqi-owned contractor in occupied territory. Vance reported the contractor, Shield Group Security, to the FBI in 2006 for allegedly running illegal guns and trading U.S. troops booze for ammunition.

Shortly after filing that report, Vance and Ertel were arrested and placed in a U.S. military prison in Baghdad, then subjected to torture techniques that proponents, like the Seventh Circuit Court, preferred to call “harsh interrogation” methods. Both men were ultimately released without charge after about three months…”

    • June 10, 2013 at 7:23 pm

Interesting because one of the biggest criticisms I’ve heard directed against President Obama was that he let the Bush administration torturers get off the hook. Well, it looks like the Supreme Court has made it plain that there’s nothing much he could have done to punish them.

  18. June 10, 2013 at 6:58 pm

Tally, ironically I was in the process of responding to your comment from the last post and lo and behold, it became the new post. Kudos Tally!!! :-D

    —–

“Most people aren’t really processing what Snowdon said; that he COULD wiretap/listen/access whatever… not that he DID…”

I caught that distinction too Tally.

We know that there is a push to make people believe that the government is monitoring every second of every individual’s life with the ultimate goal being to increase people’s mistrust of government. The same government that we ALL rely on – from the richest among us to the most destitute. Yet, we take the benefits of government for granted. We expect our infrastructures to be maintained. We expect that when we travel, whatever our mode of transportation, we will get to our destination unharmed. We assume that the foods we eat and the medicines we take will be safe for us to ingest. We like to send our emails or blog or facebook (is that a verb now? :-) ) or tweet or download movies or pay bills on-line or shop on-line. We even get annoyed when these services are not available. And yes, we expect our government to keep us from all danger both foreign and domestic.

We expect ALL these things but we want to limit the government’s resources as to how our expectations will be met. We want our freedoms to be intact. We want our freedoms but at no cost to us. We want our freedoms but with no responsibility from us. As many have stated in one way or another, the only way to avoid any government intrusion in our lives is to give up those things that many of us have come to rely on; have come to look upon as necessities.

So just as we trust all those vendors with our information, we have to trust our government. And WE have the responsibility of maintaining that trust because WE are the ones who vote people into those crucial positions that we look to to make sure our expectations are fulfilled.

    • June 10, 2013 at 7:04 pm

      And thanks!!! :D :D :D

    • June 10, 2013 at 7:25 pm

One of the things that struck me, beyond the unlikelihood of “being able to monitor every conversation,” is that he supposedly had access to everything NSA was doing and every employee. Not a chance. The odor of bovine fecal material gets stronger by the minute. Low level employees, particularly new ones don’t get that sort of access in any event, and not even people directly working for the NSA in upper levels get to know “everything.” His story and timeline keep jumping up against reality, and reality is a very big brick wall to splat against. Not to mention that his actions show him to be not the brightest light in the string.

Well if there is an upgrade then PBO holds all the cards if they decide they want another debt ceiling fight which would cause a downgrade again, The American people are a proud people and do not take kindly to people intentionally causing a credit downgrade, Remember when the newstainers made a big deal of this stating the downgrade was a first and happened under PBO, essentially blaming him. Now they could not do that, they would try but it would not work. I am just hoping it gets done prior to the October debt ceiling limit due date.

  30. June 10, 2013 at 7:26 pm

I’m reading “World War Z” right now, and aside from being a book about zombies, it’s also a very astute observation of politics. This quote stands out in regards to the news from the past few days.

When you think about the CIA, you probably imagine two of our most popular and enduring myths. The first is that our mission is to search the globe for any conceivable threat to the United States, and the second is that we have the power to perform the first.

Replace “CIA” with “NSA” and it’s the same thing. The idea that the NSA is some overarching Big Brother organization is just ludicrous. The fact is that the US isn’t China; all security agencies operate within strict parameters.

Now, of course, you can believe that’s just a lie told by “the government”. But if it’s a lie, then you need to come out with proof to back up your assertion. Saying “Well, they *could*” is like saying “Well, cops have guns, so they *could* just shoot everyone on sight.”

A PRIMER: WHEN DEALING WITH GLENN GREENWALD, ALWAYS CONSIDER THE SOURCE. (A Must Read)

The Daily Banter’s Official Helpful Media Guide for Interacting With Glenn Greenwald

    By Chez Pazienza

    —————————————–

So, with that in mind, we’d like to offer our services to the various mainstream news organizations who are now lining up to kiss Glenn’s ring in the wake of his stories in The Guardian on the NSA’s apparent data-mining of American citizens through telephone and tech companies and his interview with the man behind the leak, 29-year-old Edward Snowden. Talking to Glenn Greenwald, particularly if you’re an “establishment” news outlet, isn’t the same as talking to any regular doof off the street; you’ve got to be prepared and be on guard at all times for reasons that will become clear presently. The best advice we can give you right off the bat is that when dealing with Greenwald, it’s important to keep in mind the words of Tangina Barrons to the hapless Freeling family as it prepared to confront the ghost that was terrorizing it in the 1982 film Poltergiest: Clear your mind — it knows what scares you.
    .
    .
Glenn Greenwald has been looking to take down Obama and feed his own depthless narcissism for years now. He just managed to accomplish one of these goals in spades: If you’re a mainstream media outlet thinking of giving him airtime or copy space, you’re naturally increasing his visibility. Just be warned about what you’re up against. It damn sure isn’t the intellectual and journalistic honesty and relentless quest for the truth Greenwald would have you believe.

“instead of computer algorithms looking for trigger words associated with know terrorist information”

This. Can someone tell this to Greenwald so that he can calm down?

For Dudette ~ As a little intro, in case you’re planning on gifting us with some music tonight, here’s a ’70s oldie. Some of the words were true then, and are true now:

    “What the people need
Is a way to make ‘em smile”

JoB – partner in age :) – have just read your post – such memories of the glory & the heartache – After the assassinations of the 60s I gave up on the US until 2007 – the only things that resonated with Clinton in my world were failure to pass health care & of course, “that woman”. His adulation now, by certain groups seems amazing, given they gave him NO help while he was President.

Anyhow – I spent the 70s and 80s thinking I would become the technocrat of the world – but first IBM and then Bill Gates left me lost to that goal. It wasn’t until much later I realized what harm the right wing had done to people – world wide – and I have fought their selfishness and hatred for those who need some help – ever since.

I’ve bookmarked that post – will read it many times – thank you.

Tally, O Tally! You really shouldn’t play with ‘old’ eyes. I click back in after wandering through previous posts and around twitter and here and there, and got smacked in the face by a new post.

So picture this, all of it happening quickly. I click. My screen shows only to the end of the pic. There are these black squiggles which I can’t read. A black cat. White writing. I blink a few times and refresh. Same story – squiggles make no sense. What’s this? Am I at TOD? I glance upwards. Yes. Mercifully I haven’t actually lost it – that IS what it says at the top. Why is Chips using a different language? Let’s concentrate here, VC!……….Oh, it’s Tally and Tally language! You can’t believe how relieved I was when I deciphered the code. Remember all of this happened very quickly. Sigh. Seriously Tally girl, because I’m sometimes convinced that I AM losing my mind, you had me there for a minute. I just may have to further investigate those steps for complete privacy that you outlined. Thanks.
