night owl chat – some irish music

In honor of the G8 summit being held on the Emerald Isle, some kick-ass Irish music.

Ok, I love the opening shot of this video – “Traditional Irish music, Brogan’s Bar, Ennis, Ireland”

Bringing back memories for Chips – “Traditional Irish Music from LiveTrad.com: Fleadh Cheoil”

Now, on to the non-traditional – U2, of course, from “Boy” – “I Will Follow”

An unjustly overlooked band – Hothouse Flowers – “Don’t Go”

The Waterboys – “Fisherman’s Blues”

A little band from Ulster known as Snow Patrol – “Just Say Yes”

And, of course, another Northerner, Van the Man – “Open The Door (To Your Heart)”

This is your smiling Irish eyes night owl chat. (And Happy Bloomsday!)

Joe Biden said Saturday morning in Sunnyvale, Calif., he hasn’t changed his mind on the government’s collection of telephone call information, according to the pool report.

In a 2006 interview with CBS News, the then-Sen. Biden said that the Bush administration’s practice of collecting similar metadata was “very intrusive.”

“No, I was talking about a different program then,” Biden told the pool reporter on Saturday. “It was a different program.”

Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.) joined Biden at Hobee’s, a coffee shop chain in the Bay Area for a campaign-style stop, according to the pool report. The congressman from California is facing a tough primary challenge from Ro Khanna in the 17th District.

Biden and Honda spent about an hour at the café chatting with customers and Honda’s district staff director Mari Maben. The veep stayed in the Bay Area on Saturday, with plans to see his grandniece receive her master’s degree from Stanford in the afternoon.

Obama due in Belfast ahead of G8
      bit.ly/12BEPI3

      Published Monday, 17 June 2013
US President Barack Obama is due in Belfast later, accompanied by his wife and children, ahead of the G8 summit hosted by Prime Minister David Cameron in Co Fermanagh.

Mr Obama is only the third serving US president to visit Northern Ireland, following in the footsteps of Bill Clinton and George Bush.

While Mr Bush’s visits in 2003 and 2008 were post-9/11 and security conscious, Mr Clinton and his wife Hillary enjoyed the hope blooming just a year after the paramilitary ceasefires.

Their 1995 trip to Belfast was aimed at giving a boost to the still fragile peace process.

“To this day, Bill Clinton and his First lady say visiting Belfast was the best day of his two-term presidency.” – Denis Murray

Peace will also be on Mr Obama’s mind when, introduced by his wife Michelle, he gives a keynote address to an audience at the Waterfront Hall on Monday morning.

Speaking to 1,500 young people and around 500 other invited guests, the president will hail Northern Ireland’s progress.

Security does remains tight throughout the city ahead of the visit, with some roads affected by closures and a no-fly zone also in place – although commercial air traffic should not be affected.
While Mr Obama will afterwards head to the Lough Erne Resort for talks with eight of the world’s most powerful leaders, the First Lady and daughters Malia and Sasha will travel to Dublin.

Before the first full session of the G8 summit, Mr Obama and Mr Cameron will meet to discuss issues like the ongoing situation in Syria – with the US and UK concerned by chemical weaponry.

The conflict will also be among the topics on the agenda when all eight leaders meet on Monday evening, and again when Mr Obama later holds bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

America’s First Lady will be gone from Dublin by the time “career agitators” gather in the city centre to protest her husband’s presence at the G8 summit in Fermanagh. [Article includes video, but I can't get it to play cleanly on my PC]

    http://www.independent.ie/business/irish/obamas-clan-plan-to-avoid-g8-protests-29348020.html

“Gardai are expecting anti-globalisation groups to assemble in Dublin city centre on Tuesday afternoon but by then Michelle Obama and daughters, Malia, 14, and Sasha, 12, will have left the city for a visit to Glendalough.

Tomorrow Michelle and her daughters are attending a special performance of Riverdance in the Gaiety Theatre after visiting Trinity College Library to see records of President Barack Obama’s Irish ancestry and the Book of Kells.

The first anti-G8 protest demonstration took place in Belfast yesterday.

The march, ahead of next week’s G8 summit in Northern Ireland, left the city’s Custom House square amid a major security presence.

About 1,500 protesters, advocating a variety of causes, braved torrential rain as they walked through the streets.

Anti-G8 protesters are also expected to travel to Dublin today after assembling in London to protest. Gardai are closely monitoring ports but do not expect major problems.

The main anti-globalisation protest for Dublin is expected at around 1pm on Tuesday near the Shelbourne Hotel where Michelle Obama and her daughters have their overnight stay before leaving for Wicklow on Tuesday morning. Mrs Obama leaves Dublin for Berlin on Tuesday evening…” [More in the article]

This guy seems to be a whiny pos.

Blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng has linked his departure from New York University to “unrelenting pressure” from Beijing.

Mr Chen has been a fellow at NYU since mid-2012. He is to leave this month.

The activist caused a diplomatic flurry last year when he fled house arrest and went to the US embassy in Beijing. He was later allowed to go to the US.

NYU has rejected his claim, saying his fellowship had always been expected to last a year at most.

    ///

Beijing authorities wanted “to make me so busy trying to earn a living that I don’t have time for human rights advocacy, but this is not going to happen”, he said.

NYU spokesman John Beckman said Mr Chen’s claims were “both false and contradicted by the well-established facts”.

“Mr Chen’s fellowship at NYU and its conclusion have had nothing to do with the Chinese government. All fellowships come to an end,” he said in a statement.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-22932009

So, what he wanted was a cushy sinecure while he “advocated”? eff him.

So now that Father’s Day is over, I’d like to say how much I enjoyed the pictures and stories of great dads like President Obama and Dudette’s, both here and posted by friends on facebook. My own father had his issues. I guess it is best expressed by saying he loved me as much as he could, which wasn’t very much. He had had a difficult childhood and was very needy himself, I think, so didn’t have much left for others. Although never physically abusive to my mother, he was emotionally abusive to her. As much as having a great father has an effect on your life, a father like mine has an effect too. My mother’s father was the same way, and after going out of my way to find someone as unlike my father as I possibly could, I ended up marrying a person who was different in superficial ways, but ended up treating me the same way. It took me 16 years to figure this out. My son and daughter have both been affected by their dad’s immature emotional absence, although they are great kids and are doing well. So three generation repeating a pattern. I find great joy in President Obama’s wonderful, loving relationship with his family. I love how in every picture they are hugging, holding hands, touching in some way. I love to hear the stories of who love and laugh and send their sons and daughters out confidently into the world. I loved my father and I am sorry now for the things that prevented him from participating fully in our family and I am sorry for my ex-husband in the same way.

A top leader in al-Qaeda’s north Africa branch has been killed in fighting with France, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has said, according to a statement carried by the private Mauritanian news agency ANI.

According to the statement released by AQIM on Sunday, Abdelhamid Abou Zeid, considered a top commander within the group, was killed in the ongoing fighting in Mali.

The statement did not provide details of the date of Zeid’s death, though it comes three months after France first announced he had been killed.

The AQIM said the Algerian-born Abou Zeid, died “on the battlefield defending Umma (the Muslim community) and sharia law.”

Paris had announced in March that Abou Zeid was killed in fighting with its forces after France led an offensive to rout al-Qaeda linked groups from northern Mali.
