Africa, 2013

August 2006: Senator Barack Obama peers out of what was Nelson Mandela’s prison cell on Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa (Photo: Pete Souza)

Washington Post: President and Michelle Obama will leave Washington on Wednesday for a week-long trip to three African nations, focusing on economic development, democracy building and private sector investment.

Among the highlights for the president will be bilateral meetings with the leaders of Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania, visits to Senegal’s supreme court and a power plant in Tanzania, tours of a slave museum in Gorree Island and the site of the prison where Nelson Mandela was held for two decades on Robben Island.

Obama also will tour a community center with Archbishop Desmond Tutu in Cape Town.

The centerpiece of the trip will be the president’s speech at the University of Cape Town, where he will deliver a message that the United States intends to significantly boost its presence on the continent….

…. Michelle Obama, too, will have a full schedule. She will speak to girls at a Senegal middle school and with students at a South African high school, and she will participate in a first ladies summit hosted by the George W. Bush Institute. Former first lady Laura Bush also will participate, along with first ladies of African nations, officials said.

And, Bob, those two beautiful little girls have a world of living in their eyes as if they had already known more suffering than any of us ever have. PBO’s empathy and his bone-deep connection with real suffering and endurance has shaped his character and probably helps him to put everything into perspective when dealing with the ugliness of politics and the pettiness of politicians and the media.

Very well said, JackieG! What you said is what the pundits, and the privileged “holier than thou” progressives do not understand about the essence of President Obama. His pragmatism is deeply rooted in empathy. His goal is to improve the lives of those suffering, no matter how imperfect the improvement may be. Whereas comfortable people, who have absolutely nothing to loose, are always looking for the politically untenable perfect solutions. I don’t care what any one says, but by the time President Obama leaves office no one will be able to credibly argue that he did not make an effort to improve the lives of ordinary people.

        Needs more than a “correction.”

This is a continuation of the f**King MSM blowing dog whistles to stir up the Tea Party crowd so they can be entertained while “reporting on it.”

The real problem is that once something is reported by the MSM it stays uncorrected because it’s repeated by other journos in the echo-chamber. Example:

        Reminder from WaPo:

The GOP is so incompetent in their attacks that the MSM graciously steps in to help. Assholes, all of them.

            June 22, 2013 at 4:36 am

Indeed, Bobfr! Both the MSM and the GOP are, in my humble opinion, pure evil! Since January 20, 2009, The MSM’s and the GOP’s entire raison d’être has been all about denigrating, humiliating and de-legitimatizing President Obama. Thank God for the majority of Americans who refused to buy into the MSM/GOP agenda and re-elected President Obama. The fact that the voters thoroughly rejected their evil tactics has not deterred them a bit. This explains their negative obsessions about the President’s up coming trip to Africa. It’s as if Africa is not a part of the world community. They don’t even care about the message they are sending some of us who are of African descent when they denigrate and trivialize President Obama’s trip to Africa. I’ve got news for the MSM and the GOP. There are almost
1 and 1/2 to 2 billion people who are of African descent, world wide. Moreover, if the paleontologists are correct, all humanity is of African ancestry. Trying to denigrate and devalue Africa is an epic mistake.

changed it to “ancestral homeland”—-which is still purposeful and incomplete. Ancestral homeland is also Kansas, USA and Ireland and likely etc. etc. etc. My ancestral homeland is Titonka, Iowa then. Kinda sad. (haha–just remembered that only 4 showed up for my dad’s 50th h.s. reunion—-they had lunch at Chicken Delight)

        June 21, 2013 at 8:03 pm

        Correction is not enough.

That is sweeping the real problem under the rug.

Marissa Mayer needs to put an end to this now and fire that idiot “reporter.”

This is an important trip for the U.S. and for the President. Our narrow-minded, prejudiced press corps refuses to accept the importance and significance of Africa in the world today. I wrote both CBS and NBC and told them I expected them to send their A Team with the president on this trip. I specifically said NOT Chuck Todd to NBC.
I think the press corps gripe because it is a long trip to Africa. They are just plain lazy. OH, I also told both that the American press corps needed to learn about foreign affairs so they won’t look so stupid in front of the world. They stupidly ask about domestic gotcha issues, while the world press asks about important international issues.

Good grief, Df. what unbelievable arrogance for Greenwald to think he has any say in whether Snowden should be charged or what he should be charged with. There are just no limits to this man’s hubris. We have laws in this country. Snowden broke them and put the country at risk. Nobody has to prove to his majesty Greenwald what risks to to national security Snowden incurred. He’s a criminal. Period.

    Hi Everyone;

Hope you all had a good day.

I’ve been discharged from the hospital and I am now at a rehab center possibly for another 2-3 weeks. It’s a decent place. Clean with interesting decor. My roommate is not loud – thank goodness, but we do have a screamer down the hall. Dinner was a hot dog and included ice-cream for dessert. Can you believe it? Staff seems nice. I still miss the rehab floor of the hospital. Only reason I’m here is because my insurance wouldn’t cover extra days in rehab at a hospital.

The prison sentence for the former boss of scandal-hit Enron has been reduced on appeal from 24 to 14 years.

Jeffrey Skilling presided over Enron when it became embroiled in one of the biggest corporate frauds in US history.

In return for the more lenient sentence, Skilling, who has been in prison since 2006, has agreed to stop appealing against his conviction.

The agreement between Skilling and federal prosecutors also allows more than $40m (£26m) seized from him to be distributed to the victims of the Enron fraud.

His prison term is now set to expire in December 2020.

Google has been given 35 days to delete any remaining data it “mistakenly collected” while taking pictures for its Street View service, or face criminal proceedings.

But the UK Information Commissioner’s Office did not impose a fine.

Its investigation into Google reopened last year after further revelations about the data taken from wi-fi networks.

During that inquiry, additional discs containing private data were found.

Google had previously pledged to destroy all data it had collected, but admitted last year that it had “accidentally” retained the additional discs.

The ICO has told the search giant it must inform it if any further discs of information are discovered.

wow, just looking more into yahoo’s yahoo rachel “birther” hartman’s “reporting.” this one is as bad in my opinion.

“In Organizing for Action’s new television ad about the president’s health care law, a man of indeterminate ethnicity appears to be filling out his taxes.”

    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/political-ad-experts-critique-first-ofa-obamacare-ad-184114361.html

“indeterminate ethnicity?!?!!?” are you freakin kidding me?!? first of all, we all are “indeterminate” depending how far you want to go back on anyone’s family tree, and second, what a freakin insult to anyone who is from a “mixed” procreation in recent times, such as president obama. is president obama “indeterminate ethnicity” in young rachel’s mind?!? what a joke.

i also noticed she called him simply “obama” without ever typing “president” in the first reference to the president of the united states. do they have any writing standards at yahoo “news?”

      Inexusable.

A person is voting in the photo.

Yahoo! has a big problem with user privacy. They are arbitrarily making inactive user ids available to whoever wants that ID next month.

I have an inactive Yahoo! account but don’t want to pay them to reactive it. It’s a scheme, and a loss of privacy for their former customer. Hope the entire company is circling the drain now.

        June 21, 2013 at 9:41 pm

Didn’t complete my thought on the photo caption.

Why is ethnicity only important if the person doesn’t appear white? Would the caption read “An Irish-American is voting…” or a “Russian-American is voting…”

Yahoo! editors need to be fired as well.

      • June 22, 2013 at 6:54 am

Except for one thing. Some folks may be inactive only because they are in jail or the hospital. Or it’s used very infrequently. My yahoo is attached to an old website I’ve been trying to at least download. So much for “infrequent”. I am livid at the MSM and at Yahoo!

Marissa Mayer needs to show leadership and fire Rachel Hartmen, who doesn’t meet the MINIMUM standard of being a journalist.

Any third-grader can answer the question of “what country was the President born in?” and yet she’s getting a pass?

This is NOT an “error.” She has either proven herself incapable of objectivie “reporting,” or has proven herself to be too stupd to be a journalist. Either way, Marissa, fire her before Monday morning.
