And he upends the naysayers again. I had a feeling this would happen, while the whiny left expected ‘boring’, and ‘white bread’ statements and knew, just KNEW I tell you, that he wouldn’t mention Keystone at all.

The PBO we see and the PBO they have manufactured in their fevered brains – two completely different people.

Sounds like the media is doing their part to protect big oil. One of the reasons that they’ve had to dig so many scandals, after all they only pretend to care about the environment because it makes them look good. The reality is that the media has their hands in the oil industry.

    • June 25, 2013 at 2:28 pm

Jeff, I completely agree with you. I just put up a piece that started like this:

Yellow journalism presents little or no legitimate well-researched news, but instead uses exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, and sensationalism. It is biased opinion masquerading as objective fact. Far too many of todays journalists are unprofessional and unethical, offering up news stories that are riddled with errors, half-truths, and distortions.

  23. June 25, 2013 at 2:41 pm

Stating the obvious, the SCOTUS decision is a setback. The GOP probably feels that the 2014 election is in the bag for them. But just like voter suppression attempts did not work so well in the last election, I am hoping that once the initial disappointment and anger have passed, ways will be found to mitigate some of the damage this decision has caused. That hope may be steeped with some naiveté and unrealistic optimism. But I know there are many intelligent, creative, and resourceful people who are working on the side of justice in the cause of voting rights; looking for ways to make the GOP’s expectation to increase their presence in Congress (and in State government positions) not quite a sure thing.

I have said in the past that there are people who feel that voting is a responsibility and will carry out that responsibility during major elections and during mid-term as well as off year elections. But there are others who seem to need a cause to compel them to vote, especially if it is not a major election.

I believe that SCOTUS has just provided that cause. Think about the people who stood in line for hours to vote because they felt that their right to vote was being suppressed. People might not always take advantage of their right to do something. But they become indignant and more determined to do the very thing that they are told they can’t do. This may be THE cause that will get Democrats out to vote in 2014.

    • June 25, 2013 at 3:50 pm

I stand with you and Pres. Obama proudly.

    • 70 jacquelineoboomer
      June 25, 2013 at 3:51 pm

Totally agree that this may be THE cause to get Democrats out to vote in 2014. You know I’m an older white baby boomer, and I recall vividly there were many noble white men and women (religious and lay people alike) who joined the Civil Rights marches and other milestone events back in the ’60s, one of the few things white people had to be proud of, and those of us who had equal voting rights in our young hearts then still have that truth in our older hearts. This is supposed to be freakin’ AMERICA.

Those noble people and many, many of the rest of us may not be in our teens and 20s now, but we’re mostly all living in retirementland with plenty of time on our hands to march and VOTE in full force. Count on it. And we will step over the old dog tea party pukes while we’re at it. Never mind the 1860s, we will not let Republicans across this country take us back, kicking and screaming, into the 1960s, either. Call it a #BabyBoomerWinter, if ya like. They can kiss our Democratic a$$es!

I agree, SW. For most of the people I met and talked to on election day, Nov. 2012, the attempt to deny their vote in PA was the impetus for their coming out to vote. Anger drove them to the polls and anger sustained them through long lines. The SCOTUS ruling must be used by all of us to incite that anger once again. No potential voter must be left unregistered. Everyone who is registered must get to the polls, no matter how tired the feel or how rainy a day. We need to vote as if our lives depend on on it because they do.

    And so it begins

    By Steve Benen

    ——————————————

But exactly how long did it take before we learned of GOP policymakers acting on that satisfaction? About an hour after the ruling was announced.

Just hours after the Supreme Court handed down a ruling that guts parts of the Voting Rights Act, Texas is moving forward with a controversial voter ID law that state Attorney General Greg Abbott hopes to implement right away.

“With today’s decision, the state’s voter ID law will take effect immediately,” Abbott said in a statement to the Dallas Morning News. “Redistricting maps passed by the Legislature may also take effect without approval from the federal government.”

The Texas law requires voters to show photo identification to vote — a measure that was blocked by the Justice Department, arguing the law could discriminate against racial minorities. At the time, Attorney General Eric Holder called the law a “poll tax.”

Surprisingly he put out a very strong supportive statement: You can read the whole thing here, but I’ve posted the opening excerpt:

“//Statement on President Obama’s Remarks on the Climate Crisis June 25, 2013 : 2:01 PM

This was a terrific and historic speech, by far the best address on climate by any president ever. I applaud the new measures announced by President Barack Obama this afternoon to help solve the climate crisis – particularly the decision to limit global warming pollution from existing as well as new power plants.

Following the important pledges he made in both his inaugural address and State of the Union speech earlier this year, and the historic gains in renewable energy and fuel efficiency that the President delivered in his first term, the policy changes he announced today represent important steps forward in the battle to halt catastrophic climate disruption. Most importantly, President Obama has directed the Environmental Protection Agency to establish regulations on the amount of global warming pollution existing fossil fuel plants can pour into our atmosphere.

This action – if followed by skillful and thorough execution of the plan – has the potential to fundamentally alter the course of our nation’s energy infrastructure development and help to promote a sustainable future. On the international front, this action will bolster U.S. credibility and moral authority in negotiations with other countries.”//

    No More Pre-Clearance

    by JM Ashby

    —————————-

After today’s ruling at the Supreme Court on Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, certain states will no longer be required to seek pre-clearance from the Department of Justice before they implement sweeping legislation which only has one purpose — to suppress voters. Or, more specifically, suppress minority voters.

Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act establishes pre-clearance itself, but Section 4 establishes which states are covered, and it has been invalidated.

In real terms this means that individual laws in the affected areas will have to be challenged on the basis that they are racially discriminatory after they’ve already been passed. Currently, the Department of Justice conducts its own assessment of each law before it can be passed.

Obama’s climate plan in 3 easy bullet points (and a few sub-bullet points)

    By Lisa Hymas

    ———————————

Congress isn’t going to play along, obviously, so Obama’s plan consists of executive actions his administration can take on its own. Even some of these could be blocked by Congress through budgetary moves, and others could be blocked by courts. But he’s at least going to give them a try.

The big takeaway: Obama will crack down on coal-fired power plants, not just new ones but existing ones as well. Finally, the long-awaited “war on coal”! We’ll have to wait a while to find out how aggressively it’ll be waged — the EPA needs to actually write its regulations. Still, this is big news for climate hawks, the critical regulatory step we’ve been waiting for.

As of today, thanks to four mean stupid white men and one mean, incredibly stupid black man, an elderly woman in TX who took public transportation every day to clean toilets has to get herself her birth certificate, and haul her ass down to the DMV to get her ‘free’ ID card in order to vote.

An ID that cannot be used for any other purpose than voting.

57andFemale, I am beyond angry. I feel depleted and deflated. Right now I feel so helpless. What angered me even more was when I face booked the NAACP petition. Out of all those who show up on my facebook page, only one had addressed or reacted to this issue. Only one!

Sometimes I feel like, what’s the use?

At 66 years old, I look back and say, all that marching and fighting and dying for nothing.

Yeah, I’m depressed, frustrated, and totally despondent.

People will do to you what you allow them to do? According my facebook page, we’re just as guilty as the Supreme Court decision.

The Dem’s allowed this assault to creep up on us over 30+ years. We stopped voting in sufficient numbers, we ceded the ground to the loons. The only answer is to keep fighting, keep voting. We have a lot of work to do – it is so much bigger than electing a man we love in PBO. It is about the soul of the country.

I’m 63. I fought, I marched and I never fathomed I would be fighting it all over again at my age. But here we are and to quit means they’ve won.

When hypocritical emprogs like Chris Hayes and Kos jump on the bandwagon to give lip service to “civil rights”, I’m going to call their arses out and hold them accountable by shaming them. They are a HUGE part of the problem. They harbor and incite many of the fringe left and PUMA dem contingent by pushing superficial hateful narratives about PBO/Holder/Dem’s not addressing whatever silly pet issue happens to cross their idle, empty privileged heads in a given day, while distracting from the daily abuses of the GOP and RW, yet after the fact, they jump and pretend to be oh-so outraged when the GOP does it’s nasty work.

When Huffington Post circulated a picture of PBO morphed into Bush, I found that downright insulting and offensive, not to mention irresponsible. And the emoprog contingent lapped it up like hungry rabid dogs on a piece of meat. I will never forget those things. Cable News Virtually Ignores Obama’s Major Climate Speech

    By Annie-Rose Strasser

    ———————————–

All of the three major news networks spent mere minutes on the speech — which ran in total 49 minutes.

    MSNBC: 41 seconds

FOX News: 4 minutes and 37 seconds

CNN: 8 minutes and 5 seconds

    The Weather Channel: 49 minutes

While the lack of coverage is shocking enough, perhaps the most astounding media failure of the day was by FOX News, who broke from Obama’s climate speech to interview climate denier Chris Horner. Horner works for the conservative Competitive Enterprise Institute, and is largely funded by the oil money, including the Koch Brothers and Exxon-Mobil.

      This scene knocks me out.
Just got my DVD copy of Newsroom Season 1, and can’t wait for Season 2 to begin in a few weeks.

TOD folks introduced me to this show, and I am most grateful.
I highly recommend to anyone who want to be challenged, educated and entertained all at the same time.
      Must See TV.

Apparently Al Gore has called POTUS” climate change speech ” the best one ever by a US President.” Sorry, I don’t have the exact quote, it was a tweet.

      Here it is:

Statement on President Obama’s Remarks on the Climate Crisis June 25, 2013 : 2:01 PM

“// This was a terrific and historic speech, by far the best address on climate by any president ever.

On the international front, this action will bolster U.S. credibility and moral authority in negotiations with other countries.” //

On the issue of PBO’s climate-change address, Bloomy is not gloomy. Instead he is happy.

So far, what I can tell, our “liberal” bloggers are either ignoring the fact that POTUS gave a big speech on climate change or are finding people who are complaining about it. But Snowwald is soo important. And someone complained that he shouldn’t have made this speech when he knew that the supremes were going to rule on big issues. I bet PBO can’t wait to get on AF1 and get the hell out of the country for a while.

I suppose it is nice when POTUS’ initiatives garner praise from MSM and political folks.
But I think it is an “extra.”
By which I mean that PBO will do what is right and if you like it and praise him, thank you.
But if you do not like what he’s doing and you blame him , well, he will do that shoulder brushing thing.

Praise or blame not essential to the forward motion. Doing right and going forward is what counts. I doubt President Barack Obama cares what Al Gore or Mike Bloomberg have to say. Why should he??

    I have a question….

Do those of you on twitter get requests to join “unite blue” in your interaction screen? Are they on some kind of point system where they gain points or something for getting people to join? I just thought it is odd the way they seem relentless sometimes to get you signed on to whatever the heck this is that they are promoting. ..

    Just curious!!

There’s some controversy about them. They appear to only be a twitter thing. Here’s one link that may be biased, but I’ve heard some disturbing things about them.

oh just remembered…i think chips’ violent stalker guy promotes uniteblue, if memory serves correctly. we should not only ignore them, we should do all we can to spread the word and put them out of business asap before “the news” latches onto them and puts them on TV constantly to keep dividing and conquering the obama coalitions, which is what i suspect their plan is all along.

    • June 25, 2013 at 4:08 pm

I haven’t personally received requests to join but I’ve heard other people mention something to the effect of what you said about the folks getting points for recruiting other people into the group. Maybe other TODers know more about this than I do.

Needless to say, this “Uniteblue” seems to be another shady front group, whose current Twitter organizer (Zach Green) supported third party Libertarian in 2012.

some VERY questionable people involved in that. i’d stay far away from them. they’ve been trying to slime their way into the good graces of many people and sites i like, and seem to be fooling some people so far. what’s the point of it anyway? we have the democratic party and o.f.a. already, and this group comes out of nowhere with all kinds of money (they’re at all these events and on TV right away) right out of the gate promoting hillary?!? i think it’s a front group. o.f.a. and the traditional groups of the democratic party are sufficient. my 2 cents.

    • June 25, 2013 at 4:14 pm

      No, I don’t get requests. I do follow a few I’ve known.

    • June 25, 2013 at 4:14 pm

Sometime they’re more like orders to join, Donna! All very odd – it just strikes me as mainly a Twitter follow-back scheme, so many of the people with the UB logo don’t even discuss politics.

    • June 25, 2013 at 4:21 pm

When they first started, I think they were required to get 50 new followers a day. Don’t know what’s going on now. After I figured out what was going on, I stopped following any of them back. It’s ridiculous!

And this week Al Gore says what a great President PBO is, with his climate change speech.

What an insufferable twit Al Gore is.

    • June 25, 2013 at 4:03 pm

LOL! And next month he’ll be on MSNBC (who cut the President’s speech off) bashing PBO on the environment….

Well, let’s see: PBO has until tomorrow at 5:00 to fix climate change. Start the countdown to poutrage from Al Gore……
