12:30 ET: AG Holder delivers a statement on the Supreme Court’s decision on the Voting Rights Act today
The conservatives used the success of the Sec. 4 of the Voting Rights Act as their justification for killing it. Their reasoning was deeply flawed, and their motives were laughably transparent. This was the conservative justices’ attempt to put a Republican back in the White House. Through this decision, they opened the door to all sorts of voter suppression laws that will largely target two key pieces of the new Democratic coalition that has grown up during the Obama years, Hispanics and African Americans.
The next wave of voter suppression will also target students and the poor. It also will target Democratic voters in urban areas. In short, the Supreme Court has given the Republican Party the green light to declare all out war on Democratic voters.
The majority on this court apparently wants to return to the battles of civil rights era, and with Congress paralyzed by Republican incompetence, the remedy is to fight. Instead of signing an Internet petition, really get involved. Tell your friends and family about what has happened today. Pick up the phone, or write a letter by hand urging your member of Congress to protect your right to vote.
It is going take even more than that. You may have to willing to join a protest. Are you willing to stand up and speak out, or are you going to let 5 men with a political agenda allow Republicans to disenfranchise you?
NOBODY is playing with them
The battle never ends! There hardly ever seems to be any time to ‘rest’.
That is how I feel. I really wanted with this second term to be buoyed up; energized and ready to get the Jobs Act passed and focus on infrastructure and on international relations and on LGBT rights moving forward and on making this country a wonderfully free more liberal place to live. It feels as though we keep getting smacked down … our rights are being taken away, not broadened. The economy is on the upswing and we cannot even enjoy it because of the emphasis by the right to take away our rights, to drum up “scandals.” More and more … and not very well said, but I am so tired.
Time to reconsider why 9 people should have lifetime appointments to SCOTUS. If the Presidency is so powerful that it needs term limits, the same logic applies to SCOTUS.
If there is a limit for the President of the United States, then we should have a term limit for the Supreme Court.
“The president and Congress needs to hear from us,” Sharpton said. “We just announced yesterday the 50th anniversary March on Washington. This march will now be with Martin Luther King’s son around protecting voter rights. What they have just done is really revoked a lot of what Dr. King’s dream was all about. We build a monument to Dr. King, and part of, at least half, of what Dr. King’s dream was about was voter rights ’65. They’ve just revoked that. They just canceled the dream. And the children of the dream are not going to sit by and allow that to happen.”
Sharpton said civil rights activists are “not going to take it without a real fight and real resistance.
“But I think more than just hearing from the president, we are going to hear from people all over the country. Let’s not forget with all the voting suppression last year, there was record turnout. People stayed in line seven or eight hours because people are not going to be robbed of their right to vote,” he said.
And Sharpton said he and other leaders in the civil rights community will “call an emergency summit within days to mobilize the national community.”

Watching CBS live stream. AG Holder up in 2 minutes and will not be taking questions.
I have not read the decision or the dissent yet, but I came across a comment that said that the conservative wing of SCOTUS made clear that they believe that the Constitution doesn’t normally grant Congress the power to regulate elections.
This is a serious issue going forward, as initially there is talk about extending the ‘map’ to include the entire U.S. This Court would strike down such a provision if they indeed believe that the U.S. Congress has no jurisdiction over elections.
Every effing Ralph Nader voter is a traitor. This is what we got. And this is the America that Snowdenwald are trying to create.
MSNBC is not showing Holder.
Who is MSNBC showing Chris Hayes hero…..Snowden.
If there was ever a time for people to get registered to vote and for every organization, celebrity, media outlet or whatever to get people to understand the significance of voting the TIME IS NOW!
MSNBC now showing AG Holder statement on VRA decision
MID TERM ELECTIONS MATTER!!! LOCAL ELECTIONS MATTER!!!
I know people who can’t even name their congress members. Hello! Wake up folks. We have been asleep. The clock has been turned back 50 years. ACT LIKE IT.
Where's the outrage from the progressive civil libertarians? Oh, that's right. That's reserved for criminals like Snowden.— (@LiberalPhenom) June 25, 2013
They will continue to pontificate and divide Democrats. Bill Press was praising China and Russia this morning for supporting Snowden which might be hitting a low.
Bill, when I turned to Press and saw him gloating over this Snowden thing, I immediately turned. It has gotten to the point where I can’t stand to look at Press. It almost appears that he feels that he has to take the radical approach to everything. I also find that he is misinformed on certain things. I think I will take his show off my dvr. I try to support the liberal stations but I am finding it harder and harder to support his show.
Why don’t Bill Press take his sorry ass to China and Russia to stay? I sure won’t miss him.
Some caller to Stephanie Miller this morning, carrying on about the difference between ‘war time’ and a ‘battlefield’ – straight out of Snowden’s talking points, and al-awaliki ( you know who I mean) and his ‘rights’. Because this guy didn’t see ‘proof’ that he was planning to attack the U.S.
except he was planning to attack the U.S. There was some kind of warrant against him.
Hal Sparks, bless him, tried to explain to this loon that evidence of an impending crime is what law enforcement is used to thwart. An impending bank robbery or a mob hit – that’s enforceable. The dimness of Americans is starting to make me crazy.
I must ask them: in the absence of storming the beach at Normandy or an army marching through Paris, exactly how are you going to fight this new enemy? By unilaterally protecting my privacy rights to tweets about cats and dismantling the NSA entirely? What will you do in the absence of spying – spying that has been going on in the U.S. since the effing American Revolution?
Here’s my supposition: if, after PBO became President, he saw flagrant misuse of the spy apparatus, he would have put the brakes on stuff. I sincerely believe that what he has seen cross his desk in terms of actual threats to the lives and safety of Americans, has caused him to accept the balance between privacy and security.

AG Holder: 'The best way to defend a right is to go out and exercise it – stand up for your rights, register to vote.'— TheObamaDiary.com (@TheObamaDiary) June 25, 2013
Chips, Bob Marley came to mind…
Get up, stand up! (jah, jah! )
Stand up for your rights! (oh-hoo! )
Get up, stand up! (get up, stand up! )
Don’t give up the fight! (life is your right! )
Get up, stand up! (so we can’t give up the fight! )
Stand up for your rights! (lord, lord! )
Get up, stand up! (keep on struggling on! )
Don’t give up the fight! (yeah! )
This is why the Republicans work like hell to get rid of AG Holder. I’m so glad he did go.
Attorney General Eric Holder Delivers Remarks on the Supreme Court Decision in Shelby County V. Holder
~ Tuesday, June 25, 2013
To the contrary, it is incumbent on all American citizens to stand up for their rights by registering to vote, going to the ballot box, exercising that most fundamental of rights, and voting for their preferred candidates of any party. Our democracy is dependent on each of us, and on our active participation in the electoral process. Although today’s decision represents a serious and unnecessary setback, the Justice Department remains committed to moving forward in a manner that’s consistent with the arc of American history – which has always been a story of increasing equality, inclusion, and access to the franchise. This is what makes the United States of America truly exceptional. And this is what we will zealously guard.
Then there’s this:
I have a feeling he is hanging on just to see President Obama again
Me too. I hope he recovers anyway, to see PBO and put a mile on the faces of his family
This is wonderful news; especially on a day like this.
I don’t think the SCOTUS Five realize what it did. They *think* they know what they did—clear the path for shennanigans so that Republicans can win elections. What they’re actually doing is waking up a sleeping giant.
With the missus out of work, money is tight; but what money we can spare is going to DCCC, DSCC, OFA, and anyone else who will fight this travesty.
I live in California, so personally my rights are the same. But the diminution of anyone’s rights is a diminution of mine. This will not stand.
and how great is it that we have the o.f.a. infrastructure and training solid to start this fight. whenever things like this have happened before, we’d have to ramp up around an issue here and there, basically from scratch with some assist from local chapters of the democratic party. not so now. we’re a well-oiled machine that is ready to get to accomplishment some clear goals. forward!!!
For those who missed it. He was powerful. This is another reason why we need AG Holder

AUSTIN, Texas — A Democratic state senator has begun a filibuster to block passage of a proposal that would effectively close most abortion clinics in the state.
Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth began the filibuster at 11:18 a.m. CDT Tuesday. To derail a vote in the GOP-dominated Senate, she must keep speaking on the bill until midnight – the deadline for the end of the 30-day special session.
Rules stipulate she remain standing, not lean on her desk or take any breaks – even for meals or to use the bathroom.
Combined, the package of measures – including a ban after 20 weeks of pregnancy – would represent wide-ranging, stringent abortion limits in the second-largest state.
In her opening remarks, Davis called efforts to pass the bill a “raw abuse of power.”

He’s spent the past month excoriating the DEMOCRATIC President, and now he’s saying this.
GO TO HELL CHRIS HAYES!
Go where his hero Snowden is.
Chris Hayes can now say this after the damage is done. He is estatic with this VRA decision. Why is he still on TV? He is so stupid.
Oh please Chris, talk to the hand.
That is absolutely priceless!!

The VRA decision is a deep blow. I’m sure I’m not the only one at TOD who is asking today “What can I do to right this wrong?”
So far one answer I’ve come up with is that a local politician asked me to serve on some committee last week and I hesitated(lazy, no real excuse.)

In the article, as he heard the decision Erick Erickson of RedState is bragging about sitting at is Paula Deen branded dining table. What a charming guy.
He’s such a fucking douchebag.
Yeah Erick. Enjoy yourself. For now anyway. But the battle is just beginning.
The people of this country will pay dearly for their stupidity. Bush lied us into an illegal war, then he was still re-elected for a second term, in 2010 the dems stayed home because they were “disappointed with the President” and the independents voted for the Republican majority in congress and we got the most racist legislative body in modern times writing destructive and draconian laws for the us citizens in many states that were supposedly blue. President Obama pleaded in 2010 to not give the Repubs back the keys and now they have the keys to our collective doom. My only hope is that the tsunami of newly registered latino voters will wipe these Repubs of the face of the earth. We truly have a fight on our hands with the most powerful minority party in US history.
And now Putin is mad because he has to give that super bowl ring back, so he refuses to extradite Snowden. Who brought up that subject that was over 8 years old regarding this silly ring that he allegedly stole anyway?
They don’t have the keys to my collective doom. They want a fight they got one which means we are going to crush them in 2014. That’s how I look at it.
I too have a lot of fight in me, and I stay connected each day. My support for 2014 will be in donations, I live in SC, but will help Dems with phone banking, I am all in. Forward.
ewok! ewok! ewok! That’s the ticket. Their gloating is going to be so short lived they’ll forget why they were gloating. Blue tidal wave baby!!

Aaaaaand 3 hours after SCOTUS struck down section 4 of the VRA, the GOP has set in motion voter suppression tactics. 2014 is crucial.
Just received a press release from Texas DPS. It begins: "Photo identification will now be required when voting in elections in Texas."— Robert Wilonsky (@RobertWilonsky) June 25, 2013
Fine let’s get everyone a Photo ID so that when we turn Texas blue there’s no excuse from the bigoted bozos. If they want everyone to have a Mousketeers membership card before they vote we’ll get everyone one of those as well. Bring it on GOP and no tears when we crush you into oblivion.
Why is every summer ruined with so much shit? Is it the heat? is it that the legislative and the judiciary bodies want to go on vacation? Is it that the media knows that much of the public is vacationing and dealing with out-of-school kids and thus not paying attention, so they have to gin up faux scandals? When will we grow up? The rest of the world is laughing at us and rightly calling us hypocrites. I am tired of this shit. All hands are needed for GOTV 2014 and beyond. They really are taking back the country to the bad old days.
Actually, all hands are need to GOTV for 2013 — local elections are important, too.
No. They’re trying to. Epic fail awaits them.
But where would we go, CEB? EVERYTIME I think of travel, my first thought is: I wonder how they treat black folk? That’s one question we have to ask ourselves no matter where we try to go.
This decision today is monstrous. The republicans are monstrous. It’s racist citizens are monstrous. Clarence Thomas is a complete and total disgrace.
I’m FEELNG like you do, CEB. But where in hell would we go?
I am so hurt. I’m was a kid and marched in Winston-Salem NC. Right now, all I want to do is leave this fucking country.
Not me Sabreen. All they did was make me want to fight for it that much more. Destroy them and laugh over their prone defeated carcass!
Hmm what’s that? Why yes I did read a lot of Marvel Comics when I was a kid. Why do you ask? .
I’m 64 years old. I have been fighting all my life. The SCOTUS just told 40,000,000 black folks to eat shit and die. Where all the protests? Where are the progressives who made the asshole Snowden their hero? Where are the elite white progressives that care sooooo much about ppl of color? Crickets? Fuck em.
Hard to start a mass protest one hour after a Supreme Court decision was made. Black people aren’t going to quit. Period. For us the fight never ends.
Mass protest is not going to change their decision. Let’s use that energy to paint Congress blue in 2014.
You’re upset now and I understand. But we need you now more than ever. We’re not doing this for a traitor we’re doing this for us.
and where are all the rich liberals? all of this shit is funded by Koch brothers and such – where are the rich liberals who should be getting behind us !?!?
