President Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama stand at the “Door Of No Return” during a tour of Goree Island in Senegal, Dakar
More soon, chat away
Congrats on 1st Layla!
I have stood in that very spot. . . . “The door of no return” on Goree Island is a very sobering experience.
I have done so too. The heart-wrenching part is that the door of No Return and slave holding cells adjacent to it all all directly below the Governor’s ballroom. And in that ballroom today are displayed the mirrors and guns that were used as currency to buy the slaves. Sickening
I did too, exactly where Michelle is standing this past December…quite the sobering experience indeed.
End off last thread This is BRUTAL: actual ” ” I didn’t include to not offend anybody…..Dick Morris did the dirty work & apologized for DOMA??

Just posted comment in previous thread, LP
I just added your cogent and very prescient articulation to a thread I have for after the Africa trip is over….. Well said, well said! Some may not feel the same way…. but I have always came close to blowing a lid due to the double standard PBO is held up to.
Thank you, LP. As to the ridiculous ‘standard’ some folk attempt to apply to PBO, my attitude has always been PBO holds himself to a higher standard than dang near any person on the planet and could care less about anyone’s metric – other than perhaps his wife & daughters’.
Bob, I just went back and read your excellent comment. You are absolutely on the mark! Many of these “holier than thou” Democrats who are quick to stick a knife in President Obama’s back were absolutely silent when Bill Clinton was carrying out the damage that President Obama has been busy fixing. I bet you some gay groups, like GLAAD, will pretty soon be giving all the credit to Justice Kennedy while still dumping on the President.
SENATE VOTE TODAY A BIG DEAL: SENATORS TO VOTE FROM DESKS, SPANISH LANGUAGE MEDIA TO COVER VOTE LIVE
by Van Le on 06/27/2013 at 12:11pm
The fight for immigration reform isn’t over yet. We’ll be fighting this summer to get such a bill passed through the House (if that happens, the Senate and House bills must be reconciled in conference committee).
But still, today will be a milestone. That’s why the Senate is taking the dramatic step of voting from their desks, instead of voting while milling about. It’s a rare event. They haven’t done that since health care was passed. And Spanish-language networks like Telemundo will be covering the vote live–which they haven’t done since the DREAM Act vote in 2010.
Any minute now……..Comprehensive Immigration Bill……….A BFD!!!! VP Biden presiding….Here we go. We can hear their voices. All senators present.
The Senate bill passes 68-32, and is on its way to the House. Thank you, Vice President Biden!
Great! As an immigrant (now a Citizen), I hope the House does the right thing.
I hope so, too.
This image is emotional and so powerful. I can’t imagine what must be going through their minds standing in the place where human beings were subjected to such torture and abuse all for the sake of money and greed.
Powerful moment to behold.HZ
U.S. and international regulators say they have seized more than $41 million in illegal medicines and shut down 1,677 websites as part of their battle against counterfeit drugs sold over the Internet.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it used federal court warrants to seize the website domain names and post messages on them warning consumers.
Experts say the Internet is filled with illegitimate, professional-looking sites that peddle drugs. The FDA says those sites may offer very steep price discounts or they may not require a prescription to fill an order. They also may contact consumers through a spam email. The agency operates a website – – that explains the risks of fake online pharmacies. http://www.fda.gov/BeSafeRx
The international police agency Interpol organized the online pharmacy crackdown.
Gee, I wonder if they used any NSA material for the warrants…
Senate vote on immigration bill taking place now.
Very cool. Senators are standing and calling out their vote.
Anybody watching on CSPAN with me?
Yes saw it live.
6 States already moving forward with voting restrictions after Supreme Court Decision.
@TheJusticeDept @whitehouse @VP Can you protect voters in the six states already disenfranchising them thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/0… cc @Pfeiffer44— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) June 27, 2013
@RepJohnLewis @NancyPelosi besides 18y/o+, no restriction on voting beyond what's legally required to purchase a gun or ammo. #JohnLewisVRA— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) June 27, 2013
Sad but not surprising. Dems need to fight back right now and not wait until next year.
The conservative members of the Supreme Court have committed a crime against democracy. Every Democrat and every decent human being has to fight back against this atrocity. This, along with replacing every one of the conservative judges, is why we fight for 2014.
The very states that needed the over-sight. What the Roberts court did with the VRA was heinous.
Looks Like Reid made them all go to their desks…..like grammar school children
Yep. Just like the vote on #Obamacare
They are all seated…..this is an amazing sight. Only C-span is covering…..what a shame!

Rubio voted yes
Now on to the House.
Bill is passed.
Chants of “YES WE DID!!” breaks out…
Ok, Yes We did is wonderful.
I guess now the negative spin will be “only 68 votes”
See Mark Knoller’s tweet (I posted) below.
68-32 Yelling for some reason. Anyone know why?
^^^^ see hf’s comment:) They were happy
YES WE CAN ! YES WE CAN!
From the gallery.
Yo Chipsticks, are we going to get an upbeat dinner picture?
Hmm, I wonder what the after-dinner entertainment will be?
Are you hungry vc…I will be singing tonight for your entertainment!
Good! I’m almost ready.
Wait! Do you sing like Chips and I?
Good job Senate!!!!
Goes to the house.
Senate passes immigration reform bill 68-32. Chants of "Yes We Can! Yes We Can!" erupt from the gallery.— Nerdy Wonka (@NerdyWonka) June 27, 2013
Chants of Yes We Can from the gallery …. poor VP Biden having to call the SoA to restore order
Corker is getting hugs…
The Mofo made the bill $30B plus more expensive. Why would anyone be hugging the “Call me Harold” faker?
Corker was in the construction business. Maybe he is helping some old pals.
When it goes to the House… does it need 50% or a 2/3 majority to pass?
I’m optimistic about this. Faypax, what about you ?
Did Boehner say something about a majority of both parties? Does this mean it would have to pass with a majority of Dem votes AND a majority of Repub. votes, or is it just a complicated way of saying “simple majority”
Just a majority with is 218.
2/3 rds only required if the ” suspend the rules ” or something like that.
Nope….just a simple majority……But John “Town Crier” Boehner is saying that Majority of his Caucus must approve it, before he brings the bill to the floor.
Ah, thanks guys.
Another question… how can Boehner have the decision over that? Asks politically not too deeply informed me.
He is the Speaker of the House…..and in the House, the majority pretty much rules.
The problem is that the Tea Party tail is wagging the elephant. It’s really unfortunate that John Boehner is such a disaster at his job. Boehner can’t herd enough cats to get this done with his own caucus. He’s pathetic. It’s going to take Nancy Pelosi to get this done.
Boehner broke the Hastert Rule several times already and I think he will do it again. If not, Nancy can use a petition mechanism to force a vote. I forget what that maneuver is called.
But one way or another I think immigration is coming and America is moving Forward.
You are good.
All of you are good, thank God. I am learning so much.
…for a Canadian..lol
Lots of hugs in the Senate. No doubt Vice President Joey will be making remarks to the cameras, hopefully, after all that glad-handing.
I think Harry just gave Marco a hug. Gag.
Don’t bother Joey for a bit; he’s flirtin’ with the ladies.
Senate immigration bill passed 68-32. All Democratic Senators and two Independent Senators voted "YES." The "Nays" were Republicans.— Nerdy Wonka (@NerdyWonka) June 27, 2013
The office of Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) just told me he was “on the fence”, true quote, on how to vote but decided to vote against it because the border security was not strong enough. The tea party is taking over North Carolina.
You are right about that. Burr is a jackass anyway.
He is not as bad as Jesse Helms, but not to much better.
Fourteen GOP Senators voted Yes: Alexander, Ayotte, Chiesa, Collins, Corker, Flake, Graham, Hatch, Heller, Hoeven, Kirk, McCain, Murkowski, Rubio – plus all Democrats and 2 Independents
Hatch is a little surprising.
Maybe there was a little arm twisting?
Maybe, like Rubio, he’s banking on the bill not passing in the House?
Hatch has just been re-elected and this may be his last term. I think he is one of the longest, if not the longest, serving Republican in the Senate. If he plans to retire in 2018 he doesn’t have to worry about the teabaggers.
So the appointed senator, from SC….the guy who replaced Jim DeMint, voted No?
You mean the other “confirmed bachelor” Senator from SC. He votes how DeMint tells him to vote.
I am sorry the appointed Senator from SC is a young version of Clarence Thomas.
I was at a New Jersey OFA Immigration Reform event last night. They showed the film The Dream Is Now, and afterwards we were calling Sen Chiesa to pass CIF. I didn’t call then, because I had already called earlier and left my name and address. The NJ OFA Coordinator told us to call him to push for closure, and than to pass CIF. I did call again today to push for closure and told them again to pass CIR. I’m glad he listened to us. I’m going to call and thank him.
Mark Knoller wastes no time groveling in GOP talking points and concern trolling…
@markknoller The point of this bill is not just to reduce illegal immigration. You know that perfectly well, and so does Boehner. Pt. 1— (@aspirational12) June 27, 2013
@markknoller This bill will reduced the deficit by $900 Billion over 20 years, AND increase employment. Pt. 2— (@aspirational12) June 27, 2013
We are at net zero right now
The revelations come from a report written by the Office of the Inspector General at the National Security Agency. The document, marked “Top Secret” was leaked to The Guardian by Edward Snowden. It is dated March 24, 2009.
According to the document:
The NSA began targeting communications between the United States and Afghanistan just three days after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. When Vice President Dick Cheney asked whether the NSA could be doing more, NSA director Michael Hayden responded that “nothing else could be done with existing NSA authorities.” The NSA found the judicial review process required by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act too cumbersome for the broad-ranging surveillance the agency believed was necessary to keep track of terrorist activities.
But rather than asking Congress to amend FISA, President Bush took the law into his own hands on Oct. 4, 2001. He signed an “Authorization,” drafted by vice presidential counsel David Addington, purporting to give the NSA broad authority to intercept telephone and Internet communications if at least one party to the communication was located outside the United States.
The White House Office of Legal counsel wrote a legal opinion defending the legality of wiretapping based on Bush’s Authorization. The White House refused two requests by NSA lawyers to see this document, though Addington did “read a few paragraphs of the opinion” over the phone to NSA General Counsel Robert Deitz. The NSA’s inspector general stated that he found it “strange that NSA was told to execute a secret program that everyone knew presented legal questions, without being told the underpinning legal theory.”
Naturally, Snowdrift is pissed at the wrong person.
No Shit. THIS IS A MUST READ>
woo hoo Immigration !! any chance at all that Boehner and pals won’t screw it up.
the pics of POTUS & FLOTUS are beautiful and so touching.. its very hard to look at them though and not imagine all the people and the horror they were subjected to in that place.
Climate, Immigration, DOMA repeal — pretty good week to be a progressive. Not so great to be a House Republican. (cc @emily_bittner)— Bill Burton (@billburton) June 27, 2013
But the GOP got the big one with the VRA ruling; this will have long range effects in all aspects of our lives making the country less free and equal.
@billburton Yes, excellent week, but @SCOTUS nuking the VRA must be met by massive turnout in 2014 & 2016 rather than a 2010 repeat. cc @OFA— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) June 27, 2013

Phillis Schlafly: Latinos aren’t Republicans because of ‘illegitimate’ babies and handouts
“Latinos, she said, can never be proper Republicans because they have too many children out of wedlock and because they “don’t understand” concepts like small government and the U.S. Bill of Rights. The people that Republicans ought to reach out to are the white voters,” she said by phone. Latino voters, she maintained, will never vote Republican because they don’t “have Republican inclinations at all. They’re running an illegitimacy rate that’s just about the same as the blacks are.”
What is the Palin family “illegitimacy rate”?
What a condescending, ignorant little twat.
In Schlafly’s eyes, the Palin family is white and Christian and its illegitimacy is forgiven.
When will Calgon take Her home?
She is also anti-gay..yet has a gay son.
John Roberts has a gay cousin who is now going to marry.
This poisonous bitch is still alive?
I hope they follow her advice!
Your comment echoes my sentiment. Please, please, PLEASE, EVERYONE send this Schafly comment to everyone you know!!!
LANDMARK IMMIGRATION BILL PASSES SENATE 68-32
Huge Victory Sets Up Battle in the House – and for the Future of the GOP
Below is a statement by Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:
Where do we go from here? It’s onto the House of Representatives and a moment of truth. On policy, the House GOP has to choose between a dysfunctional status quo or a workable comprehensive approach. With respect to public opinion, House Republican lawmakers have to choose between a policy that enjoys widespread support from the American people or anti-immigrant views held by a vocal minority on the far right. Politically, the Republican leadership has to choose between passing reform and sharing credit for doing so or further tarnishing it’s already damaged brand with the fastest growing groups of voters in America.
Some believe that the Senate victory is our movement’s high water mark and progress in the House is unlikely. But they underestimate our movement. We were told that we could never come back from the defeat in 2007, and here we are. We were told that Latino, Asian and immigrant voters would never be of major electoral consequence, and here we are. We were told the anti-immigrant movement is unbeatable, and here we are. We were told that Democrats are divided on immigration reform and Republicans are united in opposition, and here we are. Now we are told that the House is too high a mountain to climb? Here we come.
Great Statement! Time to target vulnerable House Republicans both on immigration and voting rights. Remember, all the members of the U.S. House of Representatives are up for re-election in 2014.

Just called my senators to thank them for voting yes on this…it’s such a rarity that I can call either one of them with anything GOOD to say:)
I think they both sense the changing nature of AZ demographics.

HEY CHIPS!!! You got a shout out from Bob Cesca today!!! Actually, it was from JM Ashby who wrote the post:)
The first African-American President of the United States peers through “the door of no return” at the House of Slaves on Goree Island via The Obama Diary
The first response under the pictures of PBO et al at the “Door of No Return” from the French website posted earlier was deeply touching. It translated as:
“The thought could be read on his face: he was beginning to realize what had really happened over the course of three centuries. But the perseverance paid off; it was what had made him what he was today: a man whom anyone would wish to have as a guest, an honor for all humanity.”
What a beautiful comment! I just could not contain my tears looking at the picture of President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama looking out at “the door of no return.”
I know; I was crying too. “…an honor for all humanity…” that’s our president. And I really feel sorry for the people who refuse to see that.
Thank you DF!!!!

I am telling you they are over playing there hands, 2014 is within reach despite Gerry meandering.
They are making big mistakes, and only focusing on the base. I guess they think they are the only ones to show up in the Midterms?
I hope PBO calls them back for a special session
Remember, Jovie, that we faced the same type of gerrymandering in 2006, and we won. I’m pretty confident about next year. I chipped in some money today to DCCC and DSCC.
They can do it retroactive.
That’s good then. Maybe people can put pressure on them during the summer.
