12:15 PM EST: The President delivers remarks at the University of Cape Town
White House Live * CBS * Reuters
So, you distracted me with that paw, then sneaked in! Tactics or strategy?
Rats! That’s even harder to emulate. Well done!
No wonder Layla is always first these days. She must have some tried and true strategy. Hmm…
Morning Hopef. Layla says it’s the tried and true ‘fluke’. You buying that?
Heh..I’m struggling with that one too vc
Congrats Layla on #1
You 2 are too fast for me!
Hi back, come here ofter?
That’s the table mountain behind it. I stayed at a cape town hotel In may that had a great view of it from my room.
The scenery there is gorgeous!!
It’s a beautiful country. All cities have great green cover. They are not concrete jungles. Great road network. Great mountains and completely flat lands below them.
Would sure love to visit some day. HAVE to.
Okay, Hopefruit, yours is the task of arranging the TOD visit to SA! Choose a good time of the year, please. [Don't you hate to speak in meetings at work and then be assigned the task of giving life to the idea you suggested?] I’d go if there is a good sized TOD group and enough advance notice.
I’m going in October 2014; join me!
With which group and for how long?
The view is breathtaking.
Morning all. Wonderful coverage Chips. Holy buckets that MSM is in a sorry state. What a good thing it is that there is someplace to see our President you are truly doing service work and I thank you.
Also it is a beautiful day here in the Northland. I’m sitting in the backyard drinking coffee, chickens are out free ranging. kitty kats are out sunning themselves in the morning light.
One piece of advice: Never let your chicken walk across your keyboard. It does funny things to your computer.
kfc witness protection program. lol.
@SpryGuy I like it but it's not limited to the Tea Party. It's the GOP in every vote they take.— ForUS50 (@FORUS50) June 30, 2013
That view is stunning.
Stream is up here: http://www.cbsnews.com/liveFeed/widget.shtml
The Reuters stream is open too
Thank you both for the livestream info.
My pleasure, pKay. I often forget that TOD usually gives a choice of links and I often have to be nudged by JER, Chips or Utal when I’m screeching that I ‘can’t hear anything’.
That was a pretty good speech. South Africa appears to be very multicultural.

Good morning! I’m finally here when I can actually here the president speak live.
thanks for this coverage Chips and the rest of TOD. You all rock:)
Actual coverage from a network.
Coming up at 12:15 p.m. ET, President Obama delivers a speech at the University of Cape Town; watch live here: cbsn.ws/VOMjU4— CBS News (@CBSNews) June 30, 2013
Streaming has already begun.
oops, sorry ut for the duplicate – but I was so taken aback that one of the networks would actually carry the speech live – considering what they did the last few days.
HF I was thinking the same thing! One of the MSM is actually covering something!
On the CBS news/live, do I see Reggie Love sitting in the audience? It sure looks like him.
It sure looks like him…..
I saw and said the same. I really believe it was him.
Yes, it looks like Reggie Love. POTUS still considers RL as his younger brother.
It was Reggie Love.HZ
Coming up at 12:15 a Media blackout of this President.
Attorney Washington: Civil Rights Activists Defending Paula Is Insulting
By: Daryl K. Washington
I’ve finally had the opportunity to review the complaint filed against Paula Deen. For one, many people have been making this incident about the “N” word only, but it’s much more than that. I personally find it to be offensive whenever someone from another race is accused of using the “N” word they are somehow given a pass because of the use of the “N” word by some in the black communities. Let me be the first to say that I find the use of the word by anyone to be wrong. However, when it’s used in a racist or insulting manner, it hurts more.
I think individuals who are trying to defend Paula Deen’s use of the “N’ word should probably familiarize themselves with all of the facts of the case against her. Just so you know, in case you didn’t know, the person who initiated the complaint against Paula Deen and her brother is not “Black.”
She is a “white female” who was subjected to years of abuse and was finally fed up with her black employees being treated like animals, so stop thinking it was a black person complaining about Paula Deen’s use of the N word. Furthermore, Paula Deen indicated that she used the N word over 20 years ago. That is not what’s being alleged against her. That lady is something else and I’m glad I never supported any of her ventures. I personally find it insulting that so many black people are coming to the defense of Paula Deen after reading what she and her family subjected their employees to. When I learned about the major companies dropping Paula Deen without being demanded to do so, I knew it was deep. The fact that any civil rights activist is supporting Paula Deen is insulting and is a slap in the face.
Great article. Paula and her brother sound like horrible people. She’s getting exactly what she deserves. Too bad this couldn’t have come out earlier.
I read most of it as well; that woman, her family and friends do not come off well for a host of reason. PD acted many times as if she could not remember important meetings and events, but she remembered everything about the plaintiff that she twisted in many ways. She is dripping with stereotype southern charm one minute and vindictive (iron fist in a velvet glove) the next. It was a train wreck. karma has come to visit and she is staying for a while.
Spread the word. Ohio women need your help.

A cape town pic I took when I visited in 2011.
Lucky you! Gorgeous vista.
Dratz. Chips, need help in resizing.
Which ocean is that? Just kidding, it’s a beautiful pic.
It’s a part of atlantic.
Done! Absolutely gorgeous photo Amk, top of my must-visit list!
Thanks chips. I swear it showed this size in preview.
beautiful picture amk
Beautiful, Beautiful!! Thanks so much, amk. HZ
Here is his!
POTUS is EARLY.. 1
In 3..2..1…MSM is going to harp on the fact that PBO said that Malia is 15 – a few days before her birthday on July 4….
Issa will have a hearing.
They are getting ready to impeach him
hopefruit2, I said old no, POTUS said Malia is 15, she is soon to be 15, July 4th. I see the tweet from that WP lowlife….President didn’t get his oldest daughter age right.
Didn’t they do that last year too? She’s 15 in a few days, which is not significant. If she was 6 months away, okay. 3-4 days? BFD.
Yes, that’s why I said this – two years ago they jumped on the same issue. She was almost 13, not quite.
They are dumber than dirt.
I remember at one White House Correspondent Dinner the President said he was 51 and his birthday was months away its no biggie
My birthday is in September but I always say my age is what it will be Jan 1st. Not a big deal.
PBO was probably doing Malia a. favor aka, consistent with his generous, thoughtful nature
Remember when you were her age? You WANTED people to think you were 15, not 14, and maybe fudged a few days early if someone asked how old you were.
LOL! “Fortunately there are no records of this speech.”
Issa from CA is off to unearth that Tape, video, or transcript…….then run around on all TV/Cable to sound off his latest wicked verbiages.
Ugh. I missed it so I don’t get the reference.
1st speech at 19, Mr. Obama ever made was 2mins and at Occidental College…..was because of South Africa and Madiba.
Ah! Sad face . Would have liked to see 19 year old Barack Obama giving his first speech
So far…..MSNBC is carry it…..how far? Oh yeah, it has been thus far over 45 seconds they gave the Climate speech last week……Winning
Time will tell
watching PBO now.
Breaking: U.S. Supreme Court Justice Kennedy denies bid to stop California gay marriages. wsj.com— Wall Street Journal (@WSJ) June 30, 2013
As expected. Good.
They can still ask another Justice, and assume they will; but based on the ruling I hope it won’t go anywhere.
Watching people go to such great lengths to shove their religious beliefs on everyone, against everything that America stands for, is disgusting to me.
My God this is better than the Race Speech 2008

President Obama is now #1 trend on Twitter.
That’s awesome. It must not be a RWNJ trend with the title included.
POTUS: "that’s why I’ve traveled to Africa again – because my bet is on the young people who are the heartbeat of Africa’s story."— Valerie Jarrett (@vj44) June 30, 2013
Missed the first 20 minutes. Had to go get laundry. dorms suck, communal laundry.
Power………..Electrification…….Solar…..Wind……etc…….Yes…..that would revolutionize things.
My goodness, MSNBC is showing President Obama live? Or am I dreaming?
I’m watching it on cbs (!)
No Dreams…..they are still going with it. GE didn’t want to air the Climate speech. Perhaps, on Sunday…..they know that it will drive ratings for them. For they didn’t cover his speech yesterday.
But I sure am enjoying watching our President from Africa on the larger TV screen. At last!
Which networks are still covering the speech? Anyone know?
On TV or online? I think MSNBC, CBS, and CNN are covering it online. As for TV – I’m not sure. I don’t know about CSPAN either.
I’m watching it on TV on MSNBC.
Good! Maybe they saw enough tweets about lack of this trip and Texas/Davis that they got a clue.
I just thought of that possibility, myself. Who knows. Soon, there will be no cable “news entertainment” channels to watch, if they don’t get their act together. We made their ratings, and we can and are breaking them, in the meantime.
Empowerment of women.
All around the globe.
if a black dude followed a 17 y.o. white kid and then shot him, he'd be on death row by now. I mean, come on. #NerdLand #Trayvon— Imani ABL (@AngryBlackLady) June 30, 2013
Is #Nerdland a reference to Melissa Harris Perry ? She use that term all the time……( can’t stand her since she got a show )
We who know that racism is alive and well knows that if a black man had follow a 17 year old white boy and they got in a fight and the white boy got shot and kill, that black man would be found guilty, no doubt about it.
Almost every line is getting an applause
This is a very powerful speech – no doubt about it
Wow! POTUS is telling it like it is!
Some Sisters said AMEN
He always does tell it as He sees it.
Now, if Only the speeches get aired and reported…..We The People will be better off.
Ooooo, my president is telling some truths about those willing to sell out their country if it lines their own pockets. Sounds like he’s prodding a few here at home. Darn, Boehner and the like are probably not even listening.
The Town Crier is out golfing and boozing it up……in his ugly white/grey shorts.
PBO is so honest.
A man who is so obviously true to himself…..always! (Which is why **I** am always so comfortable in the decisions he makes.)
Hey everyone! Warming trend in Seattle this week, too hot to sleep at night! Young ones have traveled on, bliss filled visit was all good! Tons of catching up with y’all, but running very low in data plan. Will be lurking, count on it! Candles count is in need of replenishing:

From another dreamer … and remember Ethel Kennedy told Barack Obama (I believe at Coretta Scott King’s funeral) that the torch was now his.
Thank you for posting this.
Both RFK and PBO are the poets of their generations, who could and can move not only the thoughts of men and women, but mountains.
The POTUS delivering a vintage @BarackObama-esque speech in So. Africa! Very practical & inspirational! This is why America elected him 2x!— Elijah Jeremiah: EJ (@theosmelek) June 30, 2013
PBO is right. A life in public service is thankless. People send too much time blaming public servants. The only exception to that is the US Congress which is a waste of space and oxygen.
Ain’t that the truth!
That young man in the front row with the red tie has just been having the time of his life! I bet anything he will long, long remember this occasion, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see his face in a few years doing something ‘great’.
His enthusiasm jumped out at me, too! Loved the look on his face.
He was so visibly caught up throughout; I could have hugged him for his obvious enthrallment with the speaker!
vc and jacquelineoboomer, I felt the same about that young man. His visible appreciation for President’s speech was so evident by his body language. I love to see that in our young people. So beautiful to behold.HZ
Yes, HZ, he was very expressive. Good for him!
wow that was a great speech!
Indeed, wasn’t it!
I saw a collective pause on Twitter after those last few words….those who support him were probably riveted, and those who didn’t just didn’t know what to do/say.
No, thanks, MSNBC anchor woman. We’ll wait for a recap from our own UT. (Not that I’m taking UT for granted!)
No Person is Born with Hate.
Hate is a learned behavior……….No truer words ever said.
Those words were extremely powerful…Twitter actually stopped for a while.
Well the right wing conservatives Republicans here in America sure learn to hate President Obama.
And cellphones and tablets are clicking.
There he goes – shaking hands – Amazing President Obama!!!!
What beautiful music…….
I like the music played before and after the President’s speech. Each time it got my feet and my body tapping and rocking.
I loved the music so much. It was like a beautiful Amen for me to his great speech. I love our POTUS. May hearts be touched by his words today.
Thank you Chips for giving us so much joy. And thanks to all of the beautiful contributors throughout our beautiful journey here at TOD. Brilliant minds and beautiful spirits here. ((((((((Thank you all))))))))HZ
See, you’re exercising on June 30th!
You don’t want to go there, JO’B! Once you plant the idea that a sitting exercise session is ‘acceptable, I’ll sign up right away. That one I can do, no problem!
I also too you betcha mostly sit on my stat. exercise bike, although I do move my arms and legs, so I’m not really the one to lead the way!
Too late to back out!
Done already, jacquelineoboomer. Not as long this morning. Very, very hot here.HZ
Good for you, you inspiration!
Ok. Gunnite folks. Long day tomorrow.
G’nite amk. Sleep tite. Don’t let Nakamura bite.
Hopefruit, I have hesitated to say this, but my concern level is slowly mounting. Are you aware that you have an….obsess…hmm…. a.. fixata ..ahmm… a…a-a-a…./rush of words/ a fear of bites? It seems to be your default good night wish. Is there something you want to tell us – maybe we can help?
So there’s Reggie Love. It really is him.
I thought I recognized the face.
nitey nite amk
Sweet dreams, old boy! Thanks for the company to meet the Os and don’t forget to brush them white, smiley teeth well, before you settle in.
What a brilliant speech for the history books. My phone is ringing off the hook. Thanks again, President Obama.— KSK(africa) (@lawalazu) June 30, 2013
An outstanding speech. Welker stop with the protester report.
Yes, Reggie is with POTUS
OMG!!! OMG!!! Reggie Love is on the African trip. Just saw him next to Pres. Obama. Yay!!!!!
I’m so happy for Reggie!
I thought the same thing. Is it him???? I think not since he shook his hand, and looked transfixed. Could be his twin though. Same awesome smile too.
It was Reggie Love.
No twin, it was indeed our Reggie Love

Thanks to our great President for putting it all in perspective… again!

most excellent tweet Dudette. Wanted to say something like it but didn’t know how.
I still have a major crush on young Reggie.
To be honest, I don’t even know who the President’s current body man is or what he looks like. For me, Reggie’s still THE man.
I think Reggie and the President feel the same way!
Dudette, I love Reggie also. He knows my oldest great niece. Beautiful young man indeed.
The young man who is now President Obama’s ‘Personal Assistant is Marvin Nicholson. He plays golf with POB most of the time. He and Reggie were talking on the rope line several times. Wonderful to see all of these brilliant young minds around our President. Reggie is a sweetheart.
Dudette, do you remember that photo(I think in TX) where POB is standing behind the young man and tipping the scale as the young man is checking his weight and he has no idea that POB is tipping the scale? Well that is Marvin Nicholson on the scales. Reggie is also in the photo along with our ‘Sliver Fox’(SS).
Well, that is Marvin on the scales.HZ
Oh neat! Thanks HZ! You’re so wonderful!
In the Reuthers live stream is that huge crowd there for the President’s speech or is that something else?
That is Tahir Square I think.
Oh, okay. Makes more sense than my question. Thanks
I found this article today, refuting silly Republicans saying they aren’t racists because Party of Lincoln! It gives a good historical review of the southern strategy, which everyone here already knows, but the part I found really interesting was this-
“What the “Southern strategy” essentially does is it identified the fact that African Americans were voting for Democrats, therefore Republicans decided they would make white voters more aware of this fact in hopes of driving the “white vote” towards the Republican party.
Doubt me? Let’s look at a comment from a 1970′s interview in the New York Times with Richard Nixon’s political strategist:
“From now on, the Republicans are never going to get more than 10 to 20 percent of the Negro vote and they don’t need any more than that…but Republicans would be shortsighted if they weakened enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That’s where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local Democrats.”
Essentially it was the Republican party saying, “Look, blacks are voting for Democrats so you white people need to vote for Republicans—the party that will represent whites and oppose the blacks.””
I hadn’t heard it laid out precisely that way before.
I think see Reggie Love in the crowd with the President!
(on the CBS stream)
Great music there, by the way!
I told you guys I thought I saw Reggie Love before POTUS came to speak.
Yes, you certainly pointed him out in the audience well before most of us noticed
That’ll teach me to watch the President on MSNBC instead of Chips’ recommended livestreams.
I switched to the CBS stream when MSNBC cut to their anchor and caught a glimpse of Reggie near PBO as he was shaking hands.
Lesson learned: Don’t even bother with the cable channels. You just miss too much good stuff.
yep, he is! I just saw Reggie (O family u know)
