JER posted this entry this morning. My question is: how is it possible that the weather in Dar es Salaam (at the equator) is almost identical to coastal SoCal today?
Right Now in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania Mostly Cloudy – 84° – Humidity – 54%

OK Chips will you delete these last two comments ( the original is out of moderation)…… I don’t know whats wrong w/ WP today… UT had issues earlier, I thought I addressed them. Apparently it is only allowing the author of the thread to do any actions pertaining to comments. Sorry about the multiplications… I hate WP!

      • July 1, 2013 at 8:58 pm

No problem LP, that often happens with comments that have multiple tweets, WP’s spam detector always has trouble separating the good from the bad!

        • July 1, 2013 at 9:04 pm

TY Chips, I apologize for the inconvenience……… I know that happens sometimes, and was trying to address that w/ UT earlier… the problem is ( I had previously thought I could do it myself when you were asking the other day) but now it would not let me delete my own comments or approve any pending comments that are not from my own thread…. Last week had no problem…. looking for a punching bag!

          • July 1, 2013 at 9:06 pm

Honest LP, even at this stage I have NO idea how WordPress works! Don’t worry about pending/spam comments, I’ll look after them, I know how to identify repeat trolls using different names.

            • July 1, 2013 at 9:12 pm

Thats what I typically do, but I was just tying to delete my own comments to save you the trouble….WP gave me the finger! …..On a lighter note, is it just me, or does the setting for PBO’s press conference in Tanzania look like the Excalibur casino in Vegas?

            • July 1, 2013 at 9:35 pm

In the Dashboard, under “Tools” and “Discussion Settings” there’s a box which says how many links are allowed before something is held for moderation. The default is two, but it can be set higher (or lower). Part of the problem – and I’ve run into it myself – is that that WordPress regards each Twitter post as a link, and if there’s a couple of them together, it’ll trigger the “possible spam.”

PRESIDENT OBAMA SCHOOLS THE LAZY MEDIA STENOGRAPHERS ON THE FACTS ABOUT USA
COMMITMENT TO HIV/AIDS IN AFRICA, PEPFAR & HIS JOINT APPEARANCE WITH PRESIDENT BUSH.

Remarks by President Obama and President Kikwete of Tanzania at Joint Press Conference

State House Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – July 1, 2013

    ———————————————————–

    Q

And, President Kikwete, if I can ask you — actually both of you — to comment on the significance of President Obama’s trip here to Africa and the fact that tomorrow we will see in what I believe is a first of two U.S. Presidents, President Bush and President Obama together in a public appearance here in Tanzania.

    PRESIDENT OBAMA

I know you directed the question to President Kikwete, but my appearance with President Bush tomorrow — and I know the First Lady is going to be seeing Laura Bush — I think this is just another opportunity for me to reiterate what I said in South Africa yesterday when we were at an HIV/AIDS clinic that has saved lives because of the U.S. PEPFAR program that President Bush started. I think this is one of his crowning achievements.

Because of the commitment of the Bush administration and the American people, millions of people’s lives have been saved. Antiretroviral drugs have been made available to people who didn’t have them before, and they, even if they were infected with the disease, could look forward to a decent life. Children have been able to avoid infection because of that work. And we’ve continued that work, and we are going to continue that work.

One thing I do think is worth mentioning is that there’s been some suggestion that somehow we’ve reduced our commitment there. The fact of the matter is, is that we are serving four times the number of people today than we were when PEPFAR first began. But because we’ve gotten better at it and more efficient at it, we’re doing it at reduced costs, and then we’re not taking that money out of global health; what we’re doing is we’re putting it back into things like tuberculosis and malaria alleviation, which is making sure that more people’s lives are saved because HIV/AIDS is not the only disease that is affecting people here in Africa. And you have public health crises in some of these other areas as well.

But this indicates how timely the PEPFAR program was. And the bipartisan support that it has received has been extraordinary, and President Bush deserves enormous credit for that. And so, I’m looking forward to being able, on African soil, to once again thank him on behalf of the American people for showing how American generosity and foresight could end up making a real difference in people’s lives.

Dolan Sought Vatican Permission to Shield Assets
    By LAURIE GOODSTEIN
    Published: July 1, 2013

Files released by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee on Monday revealed that in 2007, the diocese’s archbishop at the time, Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, requested permission from the Vatican to move nearly $57 million into a cemetery trust fund in order to protect the assets from victims of clergy sexual abuse who were demanding compensation.

Cardinal Dolan, now the archbishop of New York, has in the past emphatically denied seeking to shield church funds as archbishop of
Milwaukee, and he reiterated in a statement on Monday that these were
    “old and discredited attacks.”

However, the files released Monday contain a letter he wrote to the
Vatican in 2007, in which he explained that by transferring the assets,
“I foresee an improved protection of these funds from any legal claim
    and liability.”

Today’s front page NYT article starts to put the #Snowden pieces together.

    Jun 29:
President Obama dismissed Snowden as a two-bit hacker.

    Jul 1:
NYT reports that Snowden was basically a well-paid government hacker, which answers a lot of questions as to how he got his security clearance with a relatively spotty CV.

But the question that now begs to be answered is whether Snowden was a “plant” to dig into govt records for the sole purpose of exposing the NSA “surveillance state.”

    Looking at you, @ggreenwald.

Hey VC! I didn’t get to tell you how special that video of the young ballroom dancers was for me. Besides the exceptional skill and presence of those young cuties, the video reminded me of a some school friends from South Africa. It turns out ballroom dancing there is HUGE!! I’d been a bit of a fan since I was a teenager – which is to say I’ve been enthralled by the competition broadcasts on PBS over the years. Anyway, I remember how surprised and delighted I was to learn how big a deal ballroom dancing was/is in South Africa, when I first went to see Athol Fugard’s play “Master Harold & the Boys” back in the late 80’s. One of the characters in the play was practicing for a competition and I wondered how authentic that was. I got to know some classmates from Johannesburg, who shared their love of dance with me and they talked about what home was like for them. They were so sweet. That stuck with me all these years. So thank you! That brought up some really lovely memories!

    • July 1, 2013 at 9:40 pm

Dudette I started reading your comment and thought you were going to say, the video reminded me of when I used to dance like that. :)

    • 64 vcprezofan2
      July 1, 2013 at 10:53 pm

I’m glad I shared it again then, Dudette. Happy memories are real treasures to be stored and lovingly re-examined whenever the memory door is opened. I really enjoyed watching the kids AND the judges, and wanting others to see it too I shared it late one night when the Os were in SA, but no one paid any attention. You brought joy to my heart with your response, so I thank you!

Question: How do you remember the name of a movie you saw so long ago, as well as the names of a song or two for every occasion? You guys/gals literally and regularly make me feel empty-headed so often you wouldn’t believe! Nothing meaningful ever seems to stay in my brain for any length of time. I’m starting to worry, especially when I see you guys discussing stuff and having all that pertinent historical info at your fingertips. I need a new brain, I think.

catching up on day and see this is the third thread in a row where you’ve left this hillary story, so i’ll leave something i left earlier:

agreed about the stupidity of going after her on age. i just stay focused on the fact that she would a horrific candidate who cannot, repeat, cannot win a national election. contrary to what “the news” and purity progressives are always belching, there’s a huge difference between her and president obama in terms of policy, people she surrounds herself with, leadership style, vision for the future, and how to re-activate a sense of civic duty in america.

if she runs, which i don’t expect she will, and gets the democratic nomination, i’ll vote for her in the general but it would be a wasted vote since she will not a nationwide election. that’s why we need to make sure she doesn’t run first, and if that does happen she doesn’t get the nomination (again), since she represents backward, not FORWARD!

i only respond when the hillary question comes up because it’s others trying to force her upon us yet again as inevitable, which gives me this sickening feeling of deja vu all over again, and i want to stop that train as much as i can. the clintons, “the news” and her supporters are the ones bullying this into the discourse (they were starting within a week of president obama’s reelection for crying out loud), and distracting from 2014 and “dividing” democrats with it, and i feel they should stop it right now. 2014 is too important.

      • July 1, 2013 at 9:24 pm

I agree w/ your focus on 2014 and moving forward PBO’s agenda….. this was more just a parallel w/ the sexism being displayed in TX today and throughout the country….. I was more focused on the NYT putting this as a front page story for Sunday’s paper by a journalist who previously wrote at the National Review and most recently Politico (who’s wife is the Executive Produce of MTP) and was not in any way trying to tie this to 2016. I could care less about what the Clinton’s do politically in the future…. Bill has pissed me off so many times for undercutting PBO on issues small and large. Sorry if there was any confusion….

      • 73 99ts
        July 1, 2013 at 9:39 pm

Thank you 4more – I keep thinking if the Clintons really wanted to help the US, they would be doing everything they can to get democrats to the polls in 2014 – not letting stories about Hilary 2016 get discussed over and over and over.

        • 74 4morefor44
          July 1, 2013 at 9:43 pm

yes, i’ve thought that too. hillary has been awfully coy in recent times as “the news” and PUMAs have been amplifying the “inevitable” story once again. almost seems on purpose to re-stoke the division amongst liberals as it did in 2008 and 2010, doesn’t it?

          • 75 99ts
            July 1, 2013 at 9:51 pm

It seems the husband/wife team is simply being used as a way to overcome term limits – but maybe I am unfair – yet I can see little benefit to the US of another Clinton. I am sure if they wanted to, they could be a massive help in 2014. Sometimes I think both sides want the President to fail – so they can ride in on the white horse in 2016.

Amazing how one small county in alabama was able to push the “voter id laws” right up to the sc and get the VRA gutted while the left keep losing the battles on abortion at the state level in many states despite those states’ actions are illegal and are against roe vs wade.

Last week in friggin’ delaware, where the dem senate critters are in majority by 2 to1 , beau biden lost the background checks law on gun control.

I think left’s strategic thinking and tactical maneuvers really suck and are matched by their piss-poor electoral participation.

The director and deputy director of the Vatican bank have resigned following the arrest of a senior Italian cleric over corruption and fraud allegations.

Paolo Cipriani and Massimo Tulli offered to step down on Monday “in the best interest of the institute and the Holy See”, the Vatican says.

It comes three days after the arrest of Monsignor Nunzio Scarano.

The 61-year-old and two others are suspected of trying to move 20m euros ($26m; £17m) illegally.

        • July 1, 2013 at 10:35 pm

Hi Lynn. Just the opposite. There weren’t enough men to vote so to qualify for statehood they gave women the right to vote. We were progressive in the beginning. We’re the Equality State. :???:

Lynn, The first territorial legislature of the Wyoming Territory granted women suffrage in 1869.[47] In 1890, Wyoming under Republican control was admitted to the Union as the first state that allowed women to vote, and in fact insisted it would not accept statehood without keeping suffrage.[citation needed] On September 6, 1870, Louisa Ann Swain of Laramie, Wyoming became the first woman to cast a vote in a general election.[48][49] In 1893, voters of Colorado made that state the second of the woman suffrage states and the first state where the men voted to give women the right to vote.[50] In 1896 Idaho approved a constitutional amendment in statewide vote giving women the right to vote.
