Signs of the Times?

My rusty old brain is 98.27% sure I posted these pics before…. did I? :???:

I took them when I arrived for the We Are One concert in DC, two days before President Obama’s 2009 inauguration (Pete Souza need have no fears, his job is safe) – I’m sure lots of you saw the same, or similar, when you went to election rallies.

The funniest thing was the reaction of the crowd to the nutters, who were charmingly abusive, not least that of my sports nut pal who was especially upset by ‘sports nuts’ featuring on the banner between ‘porno freaks’ and ‘drunks’.

Was she as offended by, say, the ‘baby killing women’ and ‘Homos’ references? “‘Yeah! Of course! But WTF?! Sports nuts?!” (As a sports nut, I felt her pain).

Any way, it kinda struck me today, especially after seeing the photo in the post below, that back in January 2009 we could dismiss these people as freaks …. now, you know, it’s beginning to feel like this level of insanity and hate is the ‘conservative’ mainstream.

All that was missing from the banners was a racist slur or two, and a call for the Voting Rights Act to be shredded.

But, yep, ‘mainstream’ insanity and hate, 2013 style.

So sorry for such unbelievable shocking news for you and your family.

Based on what you’ve said before, I know you’re a private person (as am I), and not trying to pry, but just to let you know our heartfelt grief for what you’re going through now.

Blessings to you and your family.

TY, Arapaho! I have been reading the wishes with a general sense of comfort and at-home-ness. There is very, very little information so far so there’s not much to say. In fact, I’m ‘killing time’ waiting to hear what tomorrow brings. There’s an autopsy being done so my expectation is that we will get a few more answers if not tomorrow, then very soon. Also, with other business open tomorrow the family can get into practical planning mode.

Thank you to all family members here! You cannot imagine the sense of ‘comfort’ I feel being here and knowing that you are sending positive support to me and my family. (Though I suspect those who have been on the receiving end know to what I refer). For me, it really does take some of the stress off. I can say in all sincerity – thank you!

And Boeing would be very happy to declare pilot error – it seems way to early to be making such comments – as for saying the pilots have a reputation as “cowboys” because they were military pilots! Other than John McCain, I was of the opinion that military pilots had the best of skill sets.

What generally strikes me on the religious signs is the way they use Jesus’ name in all seriousness, displaying IMO ignorance of his widely accepted teachings of love, acceptance and giving ‘to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s…’.

Chica, I cannot remember if you shared these signs before. It doesn’t matter anyways, and yes they are alarmingly the expectation now rather than the exception!

You’re right, VC. They focus on the dark and punishing aspects of the bible, and none of the light and forgiveness and acceptance parts. They use Jesus and the Bible as bludgeons, to keep people afraid and in line. Their perversion of Christianity is no different, in my opinion, than the extremists perverting a peaceful religion like Islam for their own ends.

And John McCain and the other GOP senators who are considered by the media to be “well respected senior statesmen blah blah blah” have no balls to tell these people they are not a part of the Republican Party. Nope nada. So those senators by their silence are AS GUILTY OF THIS HATE as the nutjobs. Do you think ANYONE in the media will ever ask the GOP leaders to step up and denounce this?

    • July 7, 2013 at 7:14 pm

In the final analysis that is what is so sad…that no one has the moral fortitude to stand up and call for “what’s right”. Sadly, the Democrats show almost as little spine as well. They find the most diplomatic way to skirt or soft-peddle the issues, instead of just calling them out. Like him or not, Anthony Weiner would have been all over it.

    • 48 Bill
      July 7, 2013 at 7:26 pm

If the GOP leadership denounced such people their base would be diminished to a degree the current GOP would have virtually no political power with the ability to win very few elections. This is one reason they are anti-education. The GOP needs to start over.

      • July 7, 2013 at 7:30 pm

That’s the threat, but those brainless bigots have no where else to go. They would make excuses and exceptions as they always do.

        • 50 Bill
          July 7, 2013 at 7:38 pm

I think the fear of the GOP is if they did not support the social issues of their base they would sit out elections. People such as Tony Perkins and others have threatened as much. They are so much being used going back to Reagan.

          • July 7, 2013 at 7:42 pm

I think they fear immigrants, people of color and gays more than they hate anything. Anytime they would rather vote for someone locked in prison other than Barack Obama…they’ll get over it.

              July 7, 2013 at 7:53 pm

I agree. The problem the GOP has is their base is shrinking and the groups you mention are growing. Brit Hume, Phyllis Schlafly and a few others have suggested that if they can get out more of their base they will be OK for the next few election cycles. I have doubts but let them keep believing it.

the one single jump to Rwnj legitimacy was McCain choosing Palin. Not every loon could have infected Congress in 2010 except fpr McCain legitimizing the tea party types. If he had been anything but an abject fraud he would have left the Senate and gone into obscurity. Instead he doubled down. The one most horrific act so far in 21st century.

Here’s a little tidbit many may not know. Nena’s mention of RFK made me think of it.

After the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order to get rid of the Federal Reserve in favor of greenbacks. Soon after he was assassinated and the Federal Reserve continued to manage and manipulate U.S. currency.

During his Presidency, RFK issued an Executive Order to get rid of the Federal Reserve in favor of silver certificates that would be owned and controlled by the U.S. government. Soon after he was assassinated. The following day, the Executive Order was canceled and silver certificates were recalled.

“After the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order to get rid of the Federal Reserve in favor of greenbacks. Soon after he was assassinated and the Federal Reserve continued to manage and manipulate U.S. currency.”

This does not make sense! First, the Federal Reserve began in 1913. Second, Lincoln was assassinated just a few days after the Confederate States surrendered.

Hope Mrs. Tereza Heinz Kerry gets better soon.

Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of Secretary of State John Kerry, has been flown to Boston for further medical treatment after being taken by ambulance from the couple’s Nantucket, Mass., home to a hospital on Sunday afternoon, sources close to the family told NBC News.

A spokesman for Nantucket Cottage Hospital said Heinz Kerry, 74, was in critical but stable condition after being admitted to the emergency room about 3:30 p.m. No further details about her condition have been released

I found my own answer. Mark Dayton is the Nephew to the 88 yrs old TARGET founder who passed away….

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2013/07/07/target-founder-douglas-dayton-dies-at-88/2497065/
Dayton is the uncle of Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton. The governor issued a statement calling his uncle “an extraordinary businessman, philanthropist, and leader of our family.”

    • July 7, 2013 at 8:22 pm

He might have been a founder of Dayton’s dept store in Minneapolis. Target was a spin-off. Dayton’s no longer exists. I loved it.

    • July 7, 2013 at 8:26 pm

I was wrong, it was his great grandfather who founded Dayton’s. George Draper Dayton (March 6, 1857 – February 18, 1938) was an American businessman and philanthropist.

So, Eliot Spitzer was a frequenter of prostitutes – which I could care less about – but Weiner should be ashamed to run for mayor? I’m not a fan of Weiner, but I also don’t like double-standards. They’ve rehabilitated Bill Clinton for his indiscretions, and we’ve got a whole slew of Republicans who are still in office, or have taken up jobs as lobbyists – and they’ve never had to account for their lack of morals or judgment. Not sure what the standards for decency and integrity are anymore. At least Anthony Weiner didn’t make his wife stand next to him after his indiscretion, like Spitzer.

Random comment, but are we here in the good ol’ U.S. the only people in the world who call back yards back yards and not gardens??? Revelation came about from watching many episodes of House Hunters on HGTV. When prospective buyers started commenting on the nice “garden”, I was looking for a garden—-you know, with flowers or vegetables—–and figured out they were just talking about the back yard—–the lawn and trees and maybe some landscaping. Garden can also be the front yard or front lawn to peeps from around the world. Ok, back to regular programming…..

GOOD POINT!! Not sure. But they have sunk sooo GD low. I want to se young, diverse reporters. It’s good! But it seems like they ALSO turned production over to 12 year-olds .
