(C’mon, I’m from L.A. You knew that was coming.)
Hi Wonderful TOD family
Even though I rarely post, I am continuously grateful for the resources and support I find here each day.
I wanted to update you on our local OFA events.
Yesterday we joined Marin OFA for a Camp OFA training. We discussed how we can help pressure Republicans in August and what we can do to implement Obamacare. e had about 40 folks – photo coming soon.
The other big news is that I was able to go on vacation for 11 days and the team carried on without me. I am very grateful to have such a hard working team. they held phone banks, worked on a fund raiser, and created a carpool all while I was snorkeling in Kauai. How cool is that?
I will leave you with my standard pester
“Give OFA 2 hours a week and together we can change the world”
If you can’t find an OFA near you send me a note firstname.lastname@example.org
You are a treasure.
Right back atcha :->
Thank you for all you do, WiW! Trust me, you deserved that Hawaiian vacation:)
You are a tireless warrior too. I love all the links you share here.
Thanks:) We all do what we can…I know that all of us working together we can get the news out that is never reported….like Bob always reminds us….WE ARE THE MEDIA!
FANTASTIC! thanks for your efforts!! taiping1 just left this on the previous thread.
it’s an article from a couple months ago that i missed until today. we would all be wise to memorize and print it out for reference for those times we face the republican talking points from relatives, friends, and co-workers. even the first page of comments are refreshingly interesting. thanks, taiping!
this is a seriously capable woman who has taken on the leadership of the new OFA here in sonoma county and making great strides. we here in santa rosa are proud to be part and parcel of this group. she is supremely positive, always upbeat and knows the issues— linda rocks!
Yes she does!
and thanks to you for being involved too!
Aw Shucks – thanks for the encouraging words
There you go, VV!
‘Afternoon’ all TODobots!
WH Live seems to be starting early!
I’m not sure WHAT is going on with WordP, but there are times when I am sure other people are in the village commenting yet it doesn’t seem to move at all when I update. However, a bit later there seems to be an influx of entries some of which conflict (or duplicate) with what I shared.
If LBJ and the Dems were as terrified of their base as Boehner and today's GOP is of theirs, the Civil Rights Act would never have happened.— john miller (@deaconmill) July 29, 2013
Great pro-Obamacare news story posted at the Orange site:
You Know All Those Employers Slashing Hours Because Obamacare? Not So Much
A new study from the Center for Economic Policy Research shows that employers are not actually rushing to cut employee hours below thirty to be under the threshold [of 30 hours].
“Fortunately, it is possible to test whether employers are actually reducing hours below the 30-hour threshold. The Current Population Survey (CPS) provides monthly data on workers usual weekly hours. We used the CPS to compare the first four months of 2013 with the first four months of 2012. We looked at the numbers and percent of workers who reported working 26-29 hours a week.”
That’s when they discovered that just 1 million people work those limited hours.
“While the sanctions in the ACA may provide some marginal incentive to reduce worker hours below the 30-hour cutoff, other considerations in setting worker hours appear to be far more important.”
More than half of Americans — 160 million people – currently get their health insurance through an employer. The law is designed to expand that number, and to help more people get health insurance through marketplaces called exchanges in each state.

So when you hear a family member or co-worker casually assert that Obamacare is causing employers to cut hours, you can inform them with actual data to the contrary.

Wow. Hard working man.
I love that they keep doing the same damn thing over and over and over again (they’re so predictable, I love it). Their trips aren’t just vacations but memories for their family and the people they interact with. I’m glad he didn’t cancel. Carry on!
I will meet them, one day.

Shoot 1st, ask questions later… Florida Cops Shoot Unarmed Black Man In His Mother’s Driveway thkpr.gs/13Uhq3G via @TPJustice— Alycee (@jazziz2) July 29, 2013
Florida seems to have gone stark, staring mad, Alycee, along with NC and Texas, to name a few. I feel as if the seams are coming apart in these states and common sense, basic humanity and good judgment have just disappeared. There are now so many states I would not go to on a bet–ugly, uninviting places of extremists, no matter how beautiful the scenery. How could this be good the the economy?
Just as well the police involved couldn’t shoot straight – as for the neighbor – living in fear – It seems the increasing gun ownership is why people call the police rather than talk to their neighbors.
So they’re stupid, racists AND a lousy shot…wow, that’s some kind of trifecta they’ve got going on there. I’m glad the man is still alive…I hope he gets well soon, but I”m sure the emotional scars will stay forever.
I hope enough of these R’s with a brain fill the other ones in…
Nice to see someone from my state being sensible and constructive for a change. People won’t forget who shut down the government, and Cole named some very popular aspects of the fed’l gov’t that people don’t think about. Do these people not realize that WE are the government…..it’s not some monolithic hunk of carbon somewhere OUT THERE!!!
These Rethugs like to shoot themselves in the foot…..or as my mother said: “Cut off their nose to spite their face.”
And notice what the timing for this brilliant ‘shutdown’ idea would be, Carolyn. We are talking about late fall when people start to think about the holidays and suddenly all SS, SSI, Medicare. Medicaid and Veteran’s checks cease, and all airports are closed! Massive numbers of people at federal offices in every state go on furlough and no questions are answered about anything–no services performed, nothing. The President of the United States has only to claim prime time on all networks to deliver an oval office announcement placing the full blame on the Republicans in Congress. He then sends OFA volunteers across the country to organize phone banks, calling on voters to call their REPUBLICAN representatives to demand an end to the shutdown. The stock market plummets, pension funds shrink, businesses and corporations scream bloody murder and the world regards the whole country as a lunatic asylum. Meantime we might as well make an announcement to the world that we are open for attack since our surveillance centers have shut down. This is the Republican idea of how to run a country. They should never, ever be elected for any office anywhere in the country and they should never, ever again be given the leadership of any house of Congress.
Agreed. And those coal producing states better get into the 21st century and begin finding other alternative, CLEAN fuel sources!
Michael Grunwald @MikeGrunwald 2h
The @EPA doesn’t have a war on #coal. It has a war on pollution. Coal just happens to produce the most pollution.
Obama can't say this out loud, but the GOP doesn't want to help the economy bc they want to destroy Obama's legacy http://t.co/P1bGaLt9jE— Jon Riley (@JonRiley7) July 29, 2013
Df, every day this is becoming more and more obvious to even the slowest wits. The Republicans are revealing themselves for what they have always been–a group of misogynist, racist bigots who put party over country and could care less about the safety and well-being of the people they are supposedly elected to serve. They are regressive nihilists. They would destroy everything out of raw hatred for one man.
You should see the nitwit comments I’m dealing with on another local site:) This guy in a comment, ridiculed a poster for supporting the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act….. ( cut and paste his exact words here)
It’s none of your business what a business owner makes, but you perfectly illustrate the Liberal mindset. Never mind that the small business owner risked his own families money to start and run the business. And the Big Foot of Liberal Government has got their hand out for every conceivable regulation that makes it excruciatingly difficult to operate without expensive CPA’s and lawyers.
Of course, none of that makes any difference to ******. She’s a worker, she’s waving her Lily Ledbetter Act, and by golly you better pay me more than my skill is worth because I’m an American.
The level of stupid is stupefying!!
They really are BRAINWASHED. They so identify with their oppressor and view his problems as their problems (similar to the house slave mindset Malcolm X spoke of). This is how 1% of the population is able to control and exploit 99%. He is so eager to protect his bosses interests. Another victim of the FoxNews/RW talk radio propaganda that is destroying this country.
And they are even more brainwashed when they turn it around and project their issues on to everyone else.
There was an item on our financial news last night. Compared pay rates in US and China over the past 10 years. The US level hasn’t changed, while China has gone up and up and up. American corporations are getting richer on the backs of their workers. This is why the US share market has grown so much more than other countries markets over the past few years.
Not sure if you can watch this link – but this was it – http://www.abc.net.au/news/business/kohler-report/
They all sound the same, angry, bitter and ignorant. My heart rate elevates every time I read their silly comments, but I don’t want to let them get away with posting their lies.
POTUS can’t say it out loud, but I have been saying it from 2010, the Republicans will sink the ship and everyone on that ship just to get destroy this black Captain Obama.

Well, since OBL was reading Mannings leaked papers on the crapper…i expect that Mr. Manning will be seeing the inside of Levenworth. Good riddance.
I’m so sick of the emoprogs on this. he’s no hero. he’s a low level idiot who did not understand the oath he took and more important, WHY he took that oath.
I understand the need for whistleblowers and there were crimes that were revealed by his document dump; but that is what FOIA is for, and a legal process that Manning ignored. Worse than that, we will never know how much was compromised by his indiscriminate treason.
This naive notion that the modern world does not exist, that we can ‘go back’ to some imagined Perfect America, is as dangerous and without basis in reality as the morans who think the earth is 6,000 years old and want the government to get their hands off their Medicare.

Good info for mapping the effects of sequester
I think/hope that the effects of the sequester will be a major topic of discussion when members of Congress meet with their voters in August.
Howard Dean just said that he wants the ACA 2 pass and he wants it 2 b implemented when it is passed! Earth 2 Howard Dean? Come In Howard?— Apollo1312 (@Jovie141) July 29, 2013
He just NOW said that?? WTH has he been??
I thought the ACA had passed. Silly me.
He’s lost his ever-loving mind,. He’s also lost any credibility he ever had as a decent progressive in my book.
Well, past the obvious idiocy – he is being rather selective in what he likes and doesn’t like. Regulation of rates, as he supports his Pharma clients, is all of a sudden a terrible idea. Except he wanted a public option which is, of course, a regulation of rates.
He’s lost his ever-loving mind. And his lack of disclosure as a ‘policy’ advisor for an international law firm is unacceptable. From their own web site:
“The firm is uniquely positioned at the intersection of law, business and government, representing clients in the areas of complex litigation, corporate law, energy, environment, finance, government contracts, health care, infrastructure, insurance, intellectual property, private client services, public policy, real estate, and technology”
That’s a lobbyist in everything but name only.
That’s a lobbyist, alright! The fact that he makes a conscious effort to disclose this, and be transparent, is no different that the Koch Bros. or ALEC bought and paid for shills in congress…I think he’s gone off the deep end at times. Sometimes I hear him and he seems like he got his bearings back….but this nondisclosure. Not ok.
From his bio at the non-lobbying lobbyist firm: “Dean’s bio at his lobbying firm boasts, “With an extensive set of contacts nationally, Governor Dean is uniquely positioned to develop partnerships between industry stakeholders and local governments.”
And the more I read, the more aggravated with Dean I become:
“The IPAB would only come into effect when Medicare’s per-enrollee spending grew faster than the average of overall price growth (measured by the Consumer Price Index) and medical price growth. That way, Medicare costs wouldn’t rise as quickly as the rest of the health-care sector, but also have some wiggle room to grow faster than the rest of the economy.
But because of the dramatic slowdown in Medicare cost growth, the program’s chief actuary announced in April, the IPAB will not come into play at least through 2015. “Because the projected 5-year Medicare per capita growth rate does not exceed the Medicare per capita target growth rate,” he wrote, “There is no applicable savings target for implementation year 2015.”
But you’d never know any of this reading Dr. Dean’s broadside.
Yep, 57. Howard Dean is out for his own benefit. He’s a lobbyist pure and simple. The good news is no one has ever listened to him in regard to legislation and no one will listen to him now. It’s a shame, though, if he misleads some who still look up to him. Bigger shame that he sold his soul.
Benen breaks it down. http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/07/29/19758220-howard-deans-misplaced-ipab-fight
There are three main areas of concern to consider. The first is political — as xpostfactoid noted, Dean “is a Senior Strategic Advisor and Independent Consultant for the Government Affairs practice at McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP.” If we translate this from inside-the-Beltway rhetoric to real English, it means Dean does lobbying work for one of the more powerful firms in D.C.
Second, there’s ample evidence that challenges Dean’s assertions on the merits. Cost controls have a pretty good track record, and his Wall Street Journal op-ed offers no evidence to the contrary.
And third, there’s the irony of Dean, of all people, pushing this argument in the first place. As Jonathan Cohn explained:
More sophisticated conservatives make a more sophisticated version of the argument — namely, that IPAB might set payment policies in ways that ultimately reduce access or quality. I don’t happen to agree with that view, but it’s a legitimate argument and one that serious people can make. What’s weird is to hear it coming from Dean.
More at the link…including the rest of what Jonathan Cohn said…
I’ve read a lot on this today, so I can’t remember where I read that Dean’s Big Pharma clients were very pleased with his work on their behalf, reducing regulations on getting drugs to market.
It might have been the Lee Fang article from a year ago, which is now getting the attention it deserves. Up to that point, he wasn’t even disclosing that he worked for this K-Street non-lobbying lobbyist firm.
They all end up with the lobbies. One of the most blatant is Harold “Keystone Pipeline” Ford. Every time his ugly face shows up on a show he must mention the “pipeline will create a gazillion jobs” line at least 10 times! What a tool he is!
Harold Ford was never progressive. He was always DLC, through and through. He got worse when he left Congress and could be the corporations’ best buddy, but it was not out of character.
Dean presented himself as progressive. “I represent the Democratic wing of the Democratic party.” Then he broadsides ACA with this less-than-truthful op-ed about a ‘problem’ that isn’t even going to need addressing at all for a few years. And his corporate taxes spiel last week was awful.
What a phoney.
As a doctor..he knows that rates are regulated already……or did he not accept any insurance companies fee schedules ?
Most insurance companies use Medicare Reimbursement rates…..
Something Nate Silver and i can agree upon:)
Everyone saw that first hand during the last 2 major elections. I’ve always been a Nate fan and I’m glad he is leaving the NYT – bad fit

BREAKING: more green paint found. This time at the National Cathedral. Damage to the wooden casing on an organ inside.
Retweeted by Jeff Gauvin
This is disgusting and sad.
The National Cathedral? Why? It’s a beautiful place and does no harm to anyone. It’s another sign of madness that will lead to greater restrictions on getting into the cathedral for people who just want to sit and pray there. Hope they can repair the damage soon.
Who knows why. There is no good reason why. People that do things like this are disrespectful of other people and their property. It’s not theirs to mess with. I hope they find out who’s doing this and they should have the appropriate punishment for this….cleaning paint off those things they destroyed with a toothpick, for starters.
Whoever is doing this is lame as hell.

Newser) – When a 95-year-old at a Chicago senior living community refused medical treatment, police were called in—and wound up killing the man with a bean-bag gun, the Chicago Tribune reports. Officers were called in Friday night to help a private ambulance crew deal with a “combative” resident being “involuntarily” sent for medical treatment.
When they arrived, John Warna allegedly threatened them with a metal cane and a 2-foot metal shoehorn, and then, when he’d dropped those, a “12-inch butcher-type kitchen knife.” Police hit Warna with a Taser, which apparently failed to get him to stand down, so they shot him with the bean-bag round. He was still conscious as he was taken to the hospital. He later died of hemoperitoneum, meaning internal bleeding due to blunt-force trauma to the abdomen, caused by the bean-bag, the medical examiner ruled yesterday.
Truly that is the most horrible piece of news about police idiocy and brutality we’ll see for a while. Until the next time.
I’m speechless, Linda. This is cruelty beyond words. That younger stronger officers could not peaceably deal with a 95-year old man is just beyond belief. I hope everyone of those so-called police officers is charged with manslaughter.
They’ll be put on “paid leave” for 2 weeks and then return to do it again.
Was that really the only way two police officers could subdue a 95 year old man?!!?????!!!!!
Just had to comment that I love when i wake up and mr. obama is still president. Its too bad we can’t just elect him president for life. of course, not that the obama girls would like that, nor would it be fair to PBO. one still can’t help but think how much better off we are today than when he took office. all that progress IN SPITE of non-stop horse crap from all sides and worse from repukes.
I don’t think President Obama would want to be elected President for life, and I’m pretty sure, no I’m dam sure Michelle, Malia, and Sasha wouldn’t like it either.
And I’m so glad he wouldn’t want to be President for life, at least I don’t think he would.
Agree with your wish, Kyle! I’m just glad we have him in the White House until January 2017.
Oh please!!! this is as bad as Aretha Franklin wanting Halle Berry to play her in a biopic! Diane Lane as Hilary Clinton…PUH-LEASE!
I thought the same thing, myself!
don’t get me wrong, I like Diane Lane, she’s a great actress. I like HIlary “well enough” and I’m not one to think that you have to visually look like a well known figure to portray them, a passing resemblance would be good.
I mean who’s gonna play Bill Clinton…Ryan Gosling or Kevin Costner???
Well…….. Diane Lane is very pretty, yes, but they can slap a headband and some glasses on her. Are they chronicling her younger years or more current?
it’s a mini-series, so IDK, but it’s so obviously a ploy for 2016. HRC hasn’t even declared her candidacy and they already making a movie????
I like Diane Lane. One of the things I like about her is her melodious voice. If they expect the public to think Hillary Clinton sounds like Diane Lane, this biopic is even more worthless than I originally thought.
I don’t see Diane Lane capable of doing the character work that Julianne Moore did as Sarah Palin.
But we’ll see.
agreed. I don’t see this being a good fit for Lane. I know Meryl Strep doesn’t do TV, but they shoulda tried to sign her up.
She would have been perfect.
Diane Lane may be looking to transition from her younger roles and this may be her chance. Hey, Julianne Moore surprised me as Sarah Palin – it was a phenomenal performance. So we’ll see.
I think she is, but she still looks so young and fit. I’m betting that’s why she took the role of Clark Kent’s mother in the Superman movie. Cause she can’t be anymore than 15 years older than Henry Cavil (Superman) right?
She’s 48 years old.
Henry Cavill is 30. I believe that Ma Kent was supposed to be an older woman. So I’m guessing they went for younger, but in the movie they aged her to appear older. So I guess she’s trying to older roles
Well, this is a good career move. She is a very intelligent actress, which you sometimes forget because she’s so darn beautiful. She wants to keep growing as an actress and keep working! Good for her.
Ma Kent didn’t have to be a much older woman, though. I haven’t seen the movie yet but I look forward to it.
I forgot about Meryl, wow that would have been perfect. But oh well. I hope they expose Bill Clinton for who he really is and don’t try to sugar-coat it.
I love and admire Arne Duncan, but sounds as though he’s had enough of “summer recess” and is looking for something to tackle!

Vice President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will meet for breakfast Tuesday morning.
Biden’s office confirmed to Politico that the two would meet at the Naval Observatory.
Their meeting will come less than 24 hours after Clinton met with President Barack Obama for a private lunch in the White House. A White House spokesman said it was “largely friendship that’s on the agenda” at the private meeting on Monday.

Can’t help but think that when the cameras went away, they were served cheeseburgers and beer or something!
That is a presidential candidate haircut for sure.
Indeed – stylists in action – I like it (the hair – not necessarily the candidate)
Her campaign really has to do a better job with her wardrobe this time around. She was so ‘entitled’ in 2008, she thought she could get away with that quirky (read: lack of style) look that she paraded throughout the primaries.
I remember Randi Rhodes saying after one of her campaign stops about the suit Hillary was wearing, “Some Holiday Inn wants its bedspread back.”
Oh dear – I didn’t hear that – sad as it is – style is needed – you only have to look at Palin as the campaign styled her – compared to before and after – no wonder the GOP had to spend $$$.
I can’t stopped and click on a pic because then I’m clicking over and over and over through the Flickr photos & I’M AT WORK!!!!! LOL!!
Where is Bill? POTUS said broccoli was one of his favorite food, so maybe no cheeseburger. POTUS is getting old, he has to watch what he eat, he will be 52 Sunday August 4th. I saw where the N.Y. Post said that Bill and Hillary are fed up with Anthony Weiner.
Looks like a lovely day in D.C., I hope POTUS and Hillary enjoy the lunch. I don’t think the GOP enjoy seeing that lunch.
I just hope there isn’t another investigation of Benghazi.
By the way, I know the Hillary lunch is getting all the attention, but do anyone know who were the civil rights leaders POTUS met with this afternoon.
If Hillary runs for Pres – there will be – for sure.
That is a great picture! I for one just see it as two former co-workers having lunch together to catch up. Nothing more to see. Move on.
And Now TeaNN is doing a Docutainment on Mrs. Hillary Clinton? NBC announced for a miniseries and Now TeaNN is about to do theirs? Holy smokes…………these Media Corporations are bent on destroying the attention of Dems by making many so sick and tired of Hillary Clinton…….
I am Only bringing this up for it was once again discussed up thread.
No doubt Mrs. Clinton will be running around raising money and campaigning for Dems in 2014.
Wonder what her deal is—–mental illness?

Well, good that she was caught–I hope they throw the book at her, especially if she was responsible for the vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial. When I lived in the DC area I used to love to go to the Cathedral and the Bethlehem Chapel was my favorite. Such a beautiful place to sit, think and quietly pray. Some people just have to destroy something, as if that somehow gives them meaning. Sick.
The article says interrogation is difficult because of a language barrier, but it doesn’t state what language she’s speaking.
Maybe the woman is a member of Snowden family. Or someone who supports Snowden. Just guessing.
Would be amusing if not so close to reality
