Well, our grand day of celebration is drawing to its close and I’d like to briefly say an extra big “THANK YOU!” to the members of the organizing committee. You know who you are - it was a pleasure working with you! To the rest of the family, visitors and lurkers - your contributions all helped to make our party what it was and I know from her responses that the mayor had a good day - once she woke up! ;) ;)

    After leaving Nancy’s Seafood Restaurant

…[President] Obama then proceeded to the vacation home of longtime friend and advisor Valerie Jarrett in the North Bluff neighborhood of Oak Buffs, overlooking Nantucket Sound.

At about 2:15 the president’s motorcade left Ms. Jarrett’s home, and traveled to the Oak Bluffs School for some basketball. He was joined by Eric Whitaker, one of his closest friends; Marvin Nicholson, White House trip director, and Sam Kass, a senior policy advisor on nutrition, as well as other staff, according to the White House.

The president returned to his vacation home about 4:20 pm. http://www.mvtimes.com/2013/08/13/rainy-tuesday-obama-heads-nancys-ob-16838/

Not that I need to know, but do we know where Malia and Sasha are? Haven’t heard about them. And that’s a good thing. No other Presidents children have been under such scrutiny. Protocol was thrown out the window with this first family. Yes, they did pick on Amy Carter and Chelsea Clinton, but nothing like this. But they are doing a wonderful job.

I have seen no mention of them—-which may not mean anything—-but I’m guessing they may have opted for camp with friends this year. They’re at that age. Of course, they could be there too, who knows. But I think I remember they were at camp for about a month last year, and they only left recently to go this year.

      ‘At about 2:15 the President’s…’
Poor souls! All that’s left for them to report is how many times he and FLOTUS blinked while in the home. Why do they feel we need all this precise info?

PBO and his team are doing a terrific job and I don’t want the country to miss out on any thing he can do to get closer to the ‘more perfect union’ between now and 2016. However, I’ll say honestly that a part of me cannot wait until his term of service is over and he and his family can reclaim the greater portion of their lives and privacy. I like to think that will also remove them from the larger field of disrespect and envy that has dogged them to date, (and that causes such anger in me from time to time).

vc, I said to myself “lord, do they record EVERYTHING he does on vacation”?
His tolerating this intrusion makes me admire him & FLOTUS all the more.
No other president had this much attention paid to them.

No other president was as interesting a person. Who really cared what Ronnie or W did on vacation? No one. Clinton was followed almost as fanatically as President Obama. I remember the picture some paparazzi took of Hill and Bill, from long distance, dancing in the sand on a Caribbean beach.

CBS just did a rather negative report about the administration delaying the out of pocket expense. Interviewed a doctor (cancer). She expressed great concern about cost of her patient’s meds. They gave the administrations reasoning….saying it was still a better deal than previous, but overall, it was a negative report. Covered the other things that have been delayed, etc. Negative, negative. Sigh….

    • 81 carolyn
      August 13, 2025 at 7:01 pm

NBC news also had a negative report on the ACA. Lisa Meyers “investigative reporter” went to Maine and found an owner of several Subway franchises who is cutting his employees’ hours from 30 to 29 so he won’t have to provide health insurance. So….they won’t have health insurance, and they will take a paycut! That owner can afford it…..SUBWAYS are lucrative enterprises. Then she talked to some community college people in Florida who are cutting their adjunct professors’ hours for the same reason…..they say they can’t afford healthcare. I know that happened where I teach too. Some adjuncts taught ten to twelve hours, now they’re limited to nine, because the college would have to provide health insurance. Frankly, this just angers me. These part time people SHOULD have access to healthcare. I’m lucky, I have medicare; young people are not so fortunate.
People SHOULD have healthcare. It is unconscionable that Americans are not riled up about this. I guess they are so used to being kicked, they don’t think they deserve healthcare.

Europeans think we’re medieval in our lack of health care.

Please take the media reports (and their agenda-driven doctors) with the appropriate amount of salt. Get the correct information from HSS, and healthcare.gov website.

The media will go far and wide to pick and choose one or two disgruntled people whose situation fits their anti-ACA narrative, and then report that as news. It’s not. It’s propaganda. They did the SAME thing in 2010 and confused a lot of the public for that reason. But we’ve been warned many times, that cable news is not the appropriate source for getting accurate info on the ACA. There a dedicated websites and place to call for that.

        August 13, 2025 at 7:39 pm

What disturbed me about this report was that it was on NBC Nightly News, the highest rated network news, and the one that many people that many people take as gospel. Once it’s on Brian Williams, it’s hard to dispute with facts. It was a terribly one sided, unfair report.

          August 13, 2025 at 7:41 pm

None of these news networks are credible anymore, unfortunately. Right now NBC is owned by Comcast - which in turn is owned by GE. All corporate owned, bought & paid for, and spewing the same menacing, anti-democratic, narratives, day-in, day-out.

Whew, what a long day it’s been!

Well, reason #1,327 why I love my job. I just helped a developmentally disabled young man fill out his application for a library card. He was profusely grateful and called us true public servants. It’s days like these which remind me that I’m not just a reference god (although, you know, I am); I actually make people’s lives better, at least a little bit.

D you let customers check out books on Nooks, Kindles and iPads?

      • 90 Liberal Librarian
        August 13, 2025 at 6:53 pm

We do have ebooks. Not as many as we would like, because many publishers refuse to sell ebooks to libraries. And those that do make us buy the licenses again after 26 checkouts. So ebooks are terribly expensive for libraries. Random House charges us about $80 per title; but at least with them we own the book for life.

          August 13, 2025 at 6:57 pm

          August 13, 2025 at 7:11 pm

This is such bull - I’m referring to the publishers and their hoarding the licenses to make an extra buck. Folks should be able to purchase a kindle machine from Amazon, or even borrow from the library itself, and check out ebooks for kindle and other apps. This is nonsense!!!

          • 95 CarolMaeWY
            August 13, 2025 at 7:21 pm

Kindle often offers free ebooks. And if your a Prime member, you have a very wide selection. I don’t know anything about Nook.

          • 97 Liberal Librarian
            August 13, 2025 at 7:40 pm

Ebooks and their restrictions are a raging topic of discussion in library-land. Patrons always ask us why there are waiting lists, and we have to explain that we don’t actually own the books; we merely buy licenses, much like software, and each license is analogous to 1 physical book. AND, we pay separately for the ebooks; we don’t get them for free when we buy the physical book. It’s quite frustrating, but the publishing industry is determined to go down clutching to its ancient business model.

    http://extremeliberal.wordpress.com/2013/08/13/alec-is-not-your-friend-beware/

Let’s look at specific examples. Insurance companies wanted off the hook from mesothelioma claims, so ALEC came forward with a model bill to protect corporations from asbestos exposure liability. The bill quickly was introduced in Ohio, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, West Virginia, and at the federal level. The Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency (FACT) Act would require asbestos victims and their families to publicly disclose all manner of personal information before receiving compensation. This information could be used to deny credit or employment and make the victims vulnerable to identity theft. The point, obviously, is to intimidate people from filing claims. No such disclosure is required of companies that exposed employees and customers to asbestos.

In fact, liability protection is a major focus of ALEC bills. As of August 2013, this year at least 71 bills crafted by ALEC have been introduced around the country that make it harder to hold corporations accountable for death or injury. Many have misleading names, such as the “Full and Fair Noneconomic Damages Act,” introduced in two states, that limits the amount a corporation has to pay to compensate people it has injured.

Hey Chips! Here’s a memory lane link with a GREAT slide show by your ‘old photographer friend’! You could send her some eyes. The show has definitely pushed my ‘extra happy’ button.

Dudette…you did some good stuff with your Tweets about the heart transplant patient:) I was repulsed by that entire thing. As you may remember, my mom died waiting for a heart transplant. Every time I think of DICK getting a heart and living on with this hate filled life, I literally feel sick. The fact that they would deny a CHILD a heart if one became available because of a lame excuse like grades….!!!!
Gee, did it ever occur to those “Doctors” that fighting for your life might just detract from concentrating on your grades!! I couldn’t weigh in last night. I was pissed all over again. My fondest wish is that stem cells can be used to grow new organs for people if theirs begin to fail. They get to live out their lives and no massive amounts of anti rejection meds for life. how good would that be? I want to see that in my lifetime.

I agree, df! It was a lame excuse for denying that child a chance at life. It’s great to see that the hospital reconsidered that heinous decision and made things right. [Although, if I were his Mom, I’d make sure who ever was involved in that original decision gets nowhere near involvement in my child’s future treatment.]

Nothing like a little public shaming to get some folks to do right. I hope no other children have had or will have to endure such callous treatment. So glad people cared enough to retweet, call, email and blast the hospital into submission. Together we can move mountains!

David Waldman has been cataloging the American gun culture carnage for over a year and he is now on Edition THIRTY. It is maddening, sickening, pathetic, embarrassing but also morbidly fascinating and a comical exposure of gun-lover buffoonery. Our gun worshipping American Patr-idiots are killing and maiming each other at a breakneck pace and each edition always includes cases of children being shot and killed or maimed.

WHO FUCKING WANTS TO PERPETUATE A SOCIETY LIKE THAT SURROUNDED BY GUNS??

What a coincidence! Remember that Obama photographer who ‘appreciated’ CC’s potties? I had forgotten her name, but ran into her work just now on twitter. Someone was using it as a counter argument in one of the MockObama hashtags. There are 144 pics there, guys and gals! Great memory lane fodder.

Yep, Ms Dudette. However….I don’t get it. Prince Rogers Nelson has no rights to those songs….gave it away…..to the Record Company for his creative badness…..total control….Hence his Symbol name change when he was fighting to get his songs back…..it failed. So when the Downloading and Youtubing of Music became the way of the music industry…..that music company was Not able to get Prince Rogers Nelson to renegotiate without him owing his songs back……..My total speculative mind going wild. I am sticking to that ;) .

          Thanks….I like Phil Collins too.

The media will work VERY hard to make Chris Chistie the republican nominee. Because they think he’s the only one who could be competitive against Hilary. I have to admit I also think Christie would be the most challenging candidate against her. And yes, she’s running. And I’m sure she has taken her decision a long time ago. As soon as a few years ago when she told President Obama she didn’t want to stay as SOS for his second term.

After all, POTUS and FLOTUS are human beings like the rest of us. They, more than any one else, deserve some privacy time because that are always in the limelight.

Ever wondered “is it me or does that song sound just like [every other song] on the radio”?
You’re not the only one. In fact, these folks did some analysis of 50 pop songs from 2012 and guess what they found:

50 Top Pop Songs of 2012 and They All Sound The Same
Here is proof of how original pop music is – You can take 55 of the biggest songs of the year, mash them up, and nothing changes, it’s all the same.

I’ve figured out who is another of our TOD twitter magnet - Dudette! She ran with that 15yr old heart patient last night (well-done, D!), others joined in, and a previous inhumane decision was revisited. Tonight I stumbled on to Scout’s campaign slideshow, mentioned it here, Dudette sponsored it, and since then I’ve run into it countless times as it’s picking up steam on twitter. Very good examples IMO that we can work around the MSM, if we use our contacts seriously and with focus.

There are so many twitter champions in our village, including our 1st example setter - Chips. Dudette, do you remember when you were hesitant to join twitter? It seems so long ago now. Come to think of it, the TOD twitter brigade was formed because we have a TOD, and we have a TOD because we have Chips. Happy Birthday again, Chips Chica!
