ThinkProgress: The Remarkable Slowdown In Health Care Costs Since The Passage Of Obamacare

A new survey of health care premiums for employer-sponsored health care coverage shows that health care inflation is slowing, further undermining critics’ predictions that costs would skyrocket in the aftermath of the Affordable Care Act.

…. Other reports have also uncovered a slowdown in cost increases. The number of double-digit rate increases requested by health insurers in the individual market has plummeted over the past four years and Medicare’s projected spending between 2010 and 2020 had dropped by over $500 billion. Under the new cost scenario, the entitlement program would, by 2085, make up 4 percent of the economy instead of the previously projected 7 percent.

Annual growth of medical spending has also slowed “from a high of about 8.8 percent in 2003 to an average of about 3 percent per capita from 2009 to 2011, according to data reported in January by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.”

USA Today: States predict more insurance customers

Estimates from 19 states operating health insurance exchanges to help the uninsured find coverage show that at least 8.5 million will use the exchanges to buy insurance. That would far outstrip the federal government’s estimate of 7 million new customers for all 50 states under the 2010 health care law….

…. “It’s not a positive development for the Republican opponents who would like to see this fail,” said Paul Ginsburg, president of the Center for Studying Health System Change…..

Jamelle Bouie: Anti-Obamacare Rage, Once a GOP Hit, Fizzles Despite Town Halls

Tea Party Republicans had a huge hit with their rage against Obamacare. It gave them control of the House of Representatives in 2010, fueled their anti-spending crusade in 2011, inspired the most vocal of the GOP presidential candidates, and elevated a host of right-wing politicians to the Senate, providing a national platform for the crusade against the so-called government takeover of health care.

Hits aren’t built to last, however, and after a while, this one began to fizzle … The magic has fizzled so much that some Republicans have begun to walk away from the project altogether, even as others work to turn Obamacare funding into cause for a government shutdown.

… Heritage can play as many of the old tunes as it likes. When October 1 comes, the Affordable Care Act will be there, ready to confer benefits, provide security, and begin the slow transformation of American health care.

TPM: Rick Perry In Talks To Accept Obamacare Funding For Elderly

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R), an ardent opponent of the Affordable Care Act, is in talks with Obama administration officials to accept an estimated $100 million in care for the elderly and disabled through Obamacare….

Texas health officials are seeking to enroll in the so-called Community First Choice program available via the law’s Medicaid expansion. Perry officially declined to enroll his state in the program, saying in April that expanding the program for the poor would make Texas “hostage” to the federal government.

TPM: Only One in Four Young Adults Know About Obamacare Exchanges

Only one in four young American adults are aware of the online health insurance marketplaces that will open on Oct. 1 as part of the federal health care reform law, according to a report released Wednesday.

In a survey of adults ages 19 to 29 by the non-profit nonpartisan Commonwealth Fund, just 27 percent said they knew they would be able to purchase insurance on the marketplaces, also known as exchanges, starting Oct. 1.

The young adult population has been the focal point of the Obama administration’s campaign to promote the marketplaces. The White House has said that it wants to enroll 2.7 million people ages 18 to 35 in the exchanges by next year; 7 million people in total are expected to sign up for health coverage.

The new report underlines the challenge that the administration faces in reaching that population….

Michael Tomasky: Republicans Move to the Center? Nope, They’re Crazier Than Ever

If you thought the GOP would adopt more moderate positions after its 2012 debacle, you were wrong. From debate threats to defunding Obamacare and even more purges, Michael Tomasky on how the insanity’s only increasing.

If you’d asked me six months ago whether the Republican Party would manage to find a few ways to sidle back toward the center between now and 2016, I’d have said yes. But today, on the basis of evidence offered so far this year, I’d have to say a big fat no. With every passing month, the party contrives new ways to go crazier. There’s a lot of time between now and 2016, but it’s hard to watch recent events without concluding that the extreme part of the base is gaining more and more internal control.

ThinkProgress: The Vast Majority Of The New Abortion Restrictions Enacted This Year Don’t Include A Rape Exception

Americans overwhelmingly favor legal abortion access for victims of sexual assault. But their lawmakers are consistently refusing to enact policies in line with that.

According to an analysis conducted by the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), more than 70 percent of the new abortion restrictions enacted in the first half of 2013 don’t include any kind of exemption for pregnancies that result from rape. And state lawmakers proposed even more measures to limit rape victims’ abortion access that didn’t make it into law — the NWLC’s report finds that 86 percent of the anti-abortion bills proposed during the same time period didn’t have a rape exception….

Steve Benen: A ‘nail in the coffin’ of the IRS ‘scandal’

Remember when the IRS story looked, way back in May, like a legitimate political controversy? With every passing revelation, the misguided uproar looks a little sillier….

…. this would be a great time for at least some accountability. There were countless Republicans and mainstream pundits – left, right, and center, from Limbaugh to Jon Stewart – who were absolutely convinced that this story was legitimate and President Obama bore responsibility for the wrongdoing we now know didn’t exist.

And yet, the scandal that evaporated into nothing has led to precious little introspection among those who demanded the public take it seriously. The political world flubbed this one, and instead of acknowledging that, it’s simply moved on as if it hadn’t made a mistake…..

SmartyPants: Team Greenwald impedes our progress on ending the indefinite war

For a couple of years now I’ve been saying that – as a liberal – I think its time to end the indefinite war. I’ve been really frustrated that too many on the left wanted to talk about drones and indefinite detention – all things that are part of that war. But they never cut to the chase and talked about ending it.

And then finally, on May 23, 2013, President Obama came right out and said that it was time to start talking about just that. Of course Team Greenwald couldn’t fathom the idea. Or perhaps, to do so would have harshed his buzz. After all, by then Greenwald was deep into his Snowden leaks – given that his first story broke only 2 weeks after the President’s speech.

So what happened is that just as President Obama was asking the country and Congress start thinking about ending this war – specifically talking about drones, detention, surveillance and repealing the AUMF – forward movement on all that stops and we start hearing from these folks that we’re living in a STASI authoritarian state.

I’m going to call BULLSHIT on that!!!!!

ThinkProgress: Chris Christie Endorses Koch Brothers Operative For Senate

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) endorsed Steve Lonegan (R), the former New Jersey head for the Koch Brothers’ Americans for Prosperity, for U.S. Senate on Tuesday. Though Christie ran in 2009 promising a middle-of-the-road “common-sense approach,” this move puts him squarely behind a far-right Tea Party candidate best known for his attacks on immigration and Spanish-language ads — and his own record of hiring undocumented immigrants.

…. Christie’s record closely mirrors Lonegan’s on key issues: 1. Both ignore climate-change science …. 2. Both strongly oppose marriage equality….. 3. Both have fought women’s health access….. 4. Both want to undermine Obamacare …. 5. Both opposed a state-level DREAM Act for undocumented youth…. 6. Both want to funnel public funds in private and parochial schools through vouchers…. 7. Both oppose popular gun violence reduction measures.….

Steve Benen: The company Corbett keeps

Ordinarily, the staffers chosen by prominent policymakers don’t generate much attention, and are largely invisible to the public. But once in a while – when, say, a senator with a fringe ideology hires a neo-Confederate, pro-secessionist activist to work on Capitol Hill – there are exceptions.

A classic example emerged this week in Pennsylvania, where Gov. Tom Corbett’s (R) administration hired Ana Puig to prominent post in the state Department of Revenue. The ideological inconsistency was hard to miss – Puig is a prominent right-wing activist and Tea Party spokesperson who made a name for herself railing against government and taxes. Now, as the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Thomas Fitzgerald reported, Puig “not only went to work for state government, she represents the people who collect the taxes to keep the beast purring along.”

    HEALTH REFORM QUIZ

    ————————————————

The health reform law promises to deliver big changes in the U.S. health care system. But, as with other sweeping pieces of legislation, it can be hard to get the real facts about what it does. And it is all too easy for misinformation about the law to spread.

Take our short, 10-question quiz to test your knowledge of the law, and then share your results with friends on Twitter or Facebook.

      • August 21, 2013 at 11:38 am

The states aren’t required to accept it according to SCOTUS. But if they want the funding from the medicaid expansion, shouldn’t it be subject to the terms set forthIin the ACA.

The Republicans want to make a show about not accepting the medicaid expansion for their states, then quietly try to find a loophole or find a way to get the money. HYPOCRISY IN ACTION.

“I knew we were going to do really well [mobilizing people]; I just didn’t think the other side wouldn’t show up,” said Frank Sharry, the longtime immigration-reform advocate who heads America’s Voice. “In 2007, they were formidable. You could argue they kicked our ass. They generated a huge volume of opposition to the bill, and it was a big factor in our defeat.”

To Sharry, the rapidly forming takeaway from this August’s political-organizing battle is that opponents of immigration reform are a paper tiger.

Before the recess, “there was a sense that immigration reform was going to be a hot topic, and Republicans would come back telling leadership we want no part of it,” Sharry said. “If anything, you have more and more members saying, ‘We’ve got to do this.’ That’s a surprising and welcome development.”

Sharry agreed with Beck that attendance at town halls is not the same as votes in Congress. But, he said, “I think it shows that at this point, the forces for reform — left, right, and center — are much stronger than the forces opposing reform. I think we’re more likely to come into September with momentum than they are, and that’s not what many would have predicted just a few short weeks ago.”

I do have some sympathies for Manning, but what he did was wrong. If he had only dumped the one video, he probably would not have been charged at all. I think he was an idealistic, naive young man who got horribly used by Assange, just like I think Miranda (though he had more awareness) got used by The Guardian and Greenwald. I also think Snowden got used and left out to hang by Greenwald, although I think, again, Snowden probably had more awareness of what he was doing than Manning.

Manning can get out in 9.5 years if all goes well for him.

GW had two black dogs, and I can’t remember the color of his cats. Did you see the photo I posted of the Kennedy’s yesterday? Six dogs and not a one black and Macaroni was not black. HW Bush had cocker spaniels, they weren’t all white. What did Reagan have, Nancy? Ford had the most beautiful Golden Retriever whose blood line is till going thanks to his daughter. Can’t remember Carter. Nixon had a lab I think and of course LBJ had beagles. Who can forget him pulling their ears? Clinton had a brown lab Buddy. Anyone sorry they brought up dogs to me? I do tend to rattle on don’t I? Did you know that black dogs are the hardest dog for a shelter to find forever homes? When I was growing up a black lab was a status symbol for people. August 21, 2013 at 12:27 pm

Not really. He was convicted of releasing thousands of classified documents relating to a ton of things. However, the things that exposed “war crimes” were not part of that conviction. His real mistake was just takking a ton of things and indiscriminately handing them over to Assange and Wikileaks. If he had just released things like the helicopter video and other things, he may well have never been charged. Other soldiers have released evidence of similar activities and not been punished.

        • 79 57andfemale
          August 21, 2013 at 12:36 pm

From the factual record of the Obama Administration, true whistleblowers have NOT been subject to draconian practices. Similar cases have shown that the administration has not prosecuted people who revealed actual wrongdoing. There is every reason to believe that had Manning kept the divulged information to the actual crimes, he would not have been charged.

Hey, I’m a complete bleeding heart liberal – but the defense of the United States would collapse if there weren’t strict rules about what a soldier can and cannot divulge. Manning completely broke the law, he was afforded due process and was convicted and sentenced. It simply cannot be a free-for-all so any private who thinks he understands the decisions made way above his pay grade, can say and do anything he pleases.

          • 80 japa21
            August 21, 2013 at 12:51 pm

I am also a bleeding heart liberal, and I would have totally jumped on the “defend Manning” bandwagon if all he had done was divulge info relating to the crimes and the Army or US had gone after him. But that wasn’t the case and has not been the case elsewhere.

So many people are ignoring everything else he put out there, although, as I said upthread, I think he is more a naive young man who was used by other people to achieve their goals, not his.

            • 81 57andfemale
              August 21, 2013 at 1:04 pm

If he followed certain procedures, divulged only what was necessary there wouldn’t have been a need to ‘defend Manning’.

His naivete is not an excuse. He had obvious mental health issues. He was able to get into the military because Bush lowered standards. Now we have many soldiers who shouldn’t be in the military, as well as gang members and other violent criminals who are bringing their weapons back on the streets.

Manning never should have had access at all.

the absurd argument that there is not ‘proof’ that his actions led to death or destruction of vital national security actions or contacts, is maddening. We will never know. We cannot know. To know would lead to even greater destruction.

I’m sick to death of these allegedly intelligent people who think we can function in a complex world with 100% privacy and no functioning intelligence apparatus. For God’s sake, we’ve had espionage since the effing Revolutionary War!

NBC News in TX is reporting that Beau Biden has a mass in his brain. Biopsy was done for it could be cancer related, aneurysm related due to cells and blood bursts or something else. I didn’t want to link it until I get collaborating stories.

THE SILLY ANTICS OF THE PURIST WING

‘The party is acting as if the entire world is a GOP primary’

    By Steve Benen

    ———————————————–

    And yet, here we are.

“The party is acting as if the entire world is a GOP primary,” said Mike Murphy, a prominent Republican campaign consultant. “That is a very dangerous way to operate. We have massive image problems with the greater electorate, and the silly antics of the purist wing are making our dire problems even worse.”
    .
    .
At the grassroots level, the only Republicans who seem to generate any excitement at all are a right-wing Texan who’s been in Congress for seven months — just long enough to make all of his colleagues on Capitol Hill hate him — and a libertarian Kentuckian who doesn’t understand the issues he claims to care about most.

    [50 Years & Nada]:

As the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech approaches, Brad Plumer points out that the ratio of black to white unemployment rate has hardly budged.

Washington Post: ”Many of the most overt forms of racial discrimination and bias have faded, but yawning economic gaps have persisted since 1963, and there has been essentially no narrowing of the unemployment gap between blacks and whites. The financial crisis and recession scarred minorities more than any one else.”

    [LOL! Juanita Jean :) ]:

Congressdrunk Don Dwyer, a Republican from Maryland has a bit of a oopsy problem. He drinks. A little while back he pled guilty to operating a boat while drunk. And not operating it very well because he crashed it and injured seven people. The boat was named “The Legislator,” so we should have expected nothing less than a crashing and injuring event.

October 25th is his court hearing on the drunk while boating.

But, Don’s problem is not alcohol. No, siree. Don’s problem is those damn gay people who make him drink.

Ya see, last week at 2:45 am he was stopped on the highway due to erratic driving. He failed three field sobriety tests.

But this ain’t his fault, y’all.

First he blamed his failing marriage. It’s wimmen’s fault, y’all. But then he had a doozy. The reason he drinks is because he feels “betrayed” by members of the Maryland House who supported marriage equality.

    REPEAL AND DON’T REPLACE

Disaster for the GOP as Republicans Are Flocking to a Key Obamacare Benefit

    By: Jason Easley

    ———————————

The Republican effort to repeal Obamacare may hit a brick wall in their own party as 62% of young Republicans are signing up and staying on their parents’ health insurance
    .
    .
Young adults, including young Republicans, want health insurance. The strategy of repeal and don’t replace is pushing them away from the Republican Party. The GOP message on the ACA appeals mostly to the existing base of older white voters who are most likely already on Medicare.

In other words, the endless Republican campaign to repeal all of Obamacare is hurting them with young voters, young members of their own party, parents who are Republicans, and the country in general. Republicans haven’t caught on yet that there are parts of the ACA that the American people really, really like.

Thank you, President Obama! An article about Volt prices dropping and American car owners becoming cleaner more rapidly than expected.

“In a welcome development for the planet, the cars on American streets are becoming much more climate-friendly much sooner than many had expected,” according to the Times editorial board. “Consumers are increasingly buying fuel-efficient hybrid and electric vehicles thanks to breakthrough innovations and supportive government policies.”

Federal policy has been important in helping this industry grow, the Times said. “Hybrid and electric cars still have a long way to go. That they have come this far shows that timely regulation, targeted assistance and government-private sector cooperation can pay big dividends for industry and the environment.”

Welcome back Chips and thank you for posting that the NYC mayoral debate tonight will be on CSPAN starting at 6. The debate itself begins at 7 and goes for an hour and a half.
I don’t imagine many people other than Ny residents will want to watch for so long, but I will sum up and post comments and general opinions from NY pundits by 9:00 or 9:30 latest.
    Go Bill de Blasio GO!!!!!
