Once again, I have to rely on Twiiter and TOD to get reports on PBO’s speech. Appears to have been another winner. I know I can’t count on the media to provide an accurate reporting of it.

Personally, I feel, like Thomas Jefferson did, that education should be a right and that anybody who wanted to go to college should be able to go for free. That is the principle he used when founding the UofVa and I also believe the CA university system operated that way for a long time.

If that isn’t possible, the government should provide interest free loans, but should exclude for those colleges who actively miseducate their students.

Speaking in Raleigh, Colin Powell blasts North Carolina voting law
    Submitted by John_Frank on 2013-08-22 09:56

UPDATED: With Gov. Pat McCrory in the audience, former Secretary of State Colin Powell took aim at North Carolina’s new voting law Thursday, saying it hurts the Republican Party, punishes minority voters and makes it more difficult for everyone to vote.

“I want to see policies that encourage every American to vote, not make it more difficult to vote,” said Powell, a Republican, at the CEO Forum in Raleigh.

“It immediately turns off a voting block the Republican Party needs,” Powell continued. “These kinds of actions do not build on the base. It just turns people away.”

The retired general served as the keynote speaker at the event and made his remarks moments after McCrory left the stage. His comments represent the most high-profile criticism of the Republican-crafted law that requires voters to show photo identification at the polls, cuts early voting days and makes it harder for students to vote.

In one comment, he seemed to rebuke McCrory for suggesting that voter fraud likely exists but is hard to detect. The governor had compared it to insider trading.

“You can say what you like, but there is no voter fraud,” Powell said.

Seriously, Colin Powell? What exactly is still meaningful or reasonable about the Republican Party that you still identify with?

Fiscal conservatism? It’s only Democratic administrations that achieve that. Taking care of veterans? Respect for ALL Americans?

What keeps you identifying with the most regressive, ignorant, mean-spirited party since the beginning of the United States?

      Have you no decency?

      • August 22, 2013 at 1:40 pm

i think that he should be commended for his comments and be encouraged to make more such comments

        • 32 57andfemale
          August 22, 2013 at 1:45 pm

Yeah, you’re right. Since there are precious few Republicans standing up. I stand corrected.

        • August 22, 2013 at 2:25 pm

I think he should be commended for his comments, too. But really? 57andfemale asked a very good question, IMO. What is keeping Powell in the Republican Party? Money, maybe. After all, Repubs give the top 2% great tax breaks and Powell is certainly in the top 2%.

          • 34 jackiegrumbacher
            August 22, 2013 at 2:35 pm

If Powell were a Dem, Sabreen, he would not be allowed to speak, he would be immediately dismissed and laughed off. As a Republican he gets inside the tent and gets to say his piece. If more decent Republicans stepped forward and talked like this, it would be the beginning of change. So if Powell gives to courage to one more person, he’s done a service, IMO.

    Liz Cheney’s fish tale
    By Steve Benen
    Thu Aug 22, 2013 9:07 AM EDT.

We talked a couple of weeks ago about a funny story out of Wyoming, where far-right media personality Liz Cheney is running an uphill Senate fight, and where an errant fishing license has become quite a headache.

U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Lynne Cheney posted a $220 bond in Ninth Circuit Court in Teton County on Monday on a charge of making a false statement to procure a fishing license.

A citation/complaint ticket in the court file states that Cheney “fail[ed] to meet residency requirements as required,” according to the ticket signed by Wyoming Game and Fish Jackson Supervisor Tim Fuchs…. Cheney signed the ticket twice, once saying she promised to appear in circuit court at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 27 or would forfeit her bond.

I’d love to hear the in-state debate as to whether Cheney is a flight risk.

God bless this guy if he truly has identity issues, but what the hell does that have to do with him leaking classified information? I heard nothing about this guy and his issues before he was sentenced, so why bring it up now? I work in a Federal Prison and I see guys going through gender reassignment and I hope he isn’t trying to use his issues as a ploy to avoid serving him sentence.

HEADLINE: More Medical Students Are Choosing To Become Family Doctors — And That’s Good News For Obamacare

// The number of U.S. medical school graduates choosing to go into family medicine and primary care rose for the fourth consecutive year, according to a press release from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). That’s great news for the millions of Americans who will become newly insured under Obamacare and Medicare in the coming years, since many industry experts feared there wouldn’t be enough primary care physicians to meet their medical needs….//

WikiLeaks Party in crisis over lack of transparency and support for far-right politicians

    http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/08/21/wikileaks-party-in-crisis-over-lack-of-transparency-and-support-for-far-right-politicians/

Julian Assange on Thursday took responsibility for the resignation of a key candidate from his WikiLeaks Party running in Australian elections, blaming his focus on Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning.

The fledgling party is in crisis after its number two candidate for the Australian Senate behind Assange, ethicist Leslie Cannold, said she was disillusioned with its lack of transparency and accountability and quit Wednesday.

Romans 13, Submission to Governing Authorities. Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.

          August 22, 2013 at 2:27 pm

Therefore, whoever resists authority opposes what God has appointed, and those who oppose it will bring judgment upon themselves.
          3
For rulers are not a cause of fear to good conduct, but to evil.b Do you wish to have no fear of authority? Then do what is good and you will receive approval from it,
          4
for it is a servant of God for your good. But if you do evil, be afraid, for it does not bear the sword without purpose; it is the servant of God to inflict wrath on the evildoer.c
          5
Therefore, it is necessary to be subject not only because of the wrath but also because of conscience.d
          6
This is why you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.
          7
Pay to all their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, toll to whom toll is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.

Oh, yardarm, didn’t you know that only the parts of the Bible that confirm to right wing prejudices are valid. Their Bible does not include the Sermon on the Mount , the many injunction to help the poor or the warnings against being judgmental. In fact the whole idea of loving thy neighbor and not bearing false witness is xed our in their version. Only the righteous, vengeful, hateful and murderous bits are left in. Oh, and the section about slaves and the wives being subservient is in bold face.

She’s over a year old! it must be the excitement in the new house, and longer distances to navigate on her way outside.

Then again, my bichon/maltese mix will never be completely trained, the stubborn son-of-a-gun. And my little Pearl, who spent her first 7 years as a puppy mill breeder, may never be 100%. But it’s all worth it to have their love and light in our lives.

      • 91 hopefruit2
        August 22, 2013 at 2:05 pm

LOL! I was thinking the same thing. At 1 year most dogs have been fully house-broken for a while. It could very well be the excitement as you say.

But It’s possible that her previous owner didn’t know how to handle her properly and left her badly trained as a result. I recall when the Obamas had first adopted Bo, there was a huge spike in the demand for Portuguese Water Dogs, not just in the US, but worldwide, esp. in some parts of the UK. A well-known breeder of PWD’s cautioned people that these dogs are high-maintenance and people should know what they’re getting into before adopting the pups.

        • 92 57andfemale
          August 22, 2013 at 2:21 pm

I would think this dog was chosen very carefully; and I assumed that getting a full grown dog would come with the guarantee of expert training. I guess not.

I understand the allergy issues, I really do. But I have dogs notwithstanding my asthma and allergies, and I’ve always found great dogs at shelters. When you realize that the Obamas could have combed every shelter in America, I still wish they had adopted from a shelter. They gave a donation to the Humane Society. But if getting a PWD spikes interest, imagine the effect the Obama family could have had on the millions of homeless dogs needing a home.

That’s my one and only criticism of our First Family.

          • 93 GGail
            August 22, 2013 at 2:54 pm

My take is that the first dog was a gift from Senator Kennedy to the First Family. A gift that would have been unthinkable to turn down. The second dog I feel is a choice to have a similar playmate for Bo. Makes sense IMO.

            • 94 57andfemale
              August 22, 2013 at 2:58 pm

The Obamas were clear with Bo and with Sunny as well that they wanted to make sure the dog they got was hypoallergenic and that was why they didn’t adopt from a shelter.

It’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. I’m just passionate about adopting, and we adopt adult dogs that really need us. These shelters are all overworked, relying on the kindness of strangers and operating on a shoestring. Adopting a dog by the Obamas would have been an excellent boost for this very worthwhile cause.

Besides, zyrtec is excellent for animal allergies! A friend of my is highly allergic and lives with several cats and two dogs as long as she takes her zyrtec!

JOB, this is pure snobbery. Many full time workers who can’t attend campus classes take online courses. These courses are fully accredited and give people a chance to move up in their careers. Not everyone can go off to college and very few can afford full time classes. I admire those who work long hours, then come home, take online courses, write papers, take exams and get up and do it all again the next day–often with children to take care of in the meantime. They’re doing what they can to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and PBO recognizes that. MHarris Perry can go to hell.

Away from the stench of Washington, the pettiness and nastiness of politicians and the smarmy incompetence of the DC media, he probably thoroughly enjoys himself with real people.
