A year ago today: The Buff restaurant, Boulder
Good Morning TOD
It’s Aaaaaaafricaaaaaaaa!! Hello again you!
Aaah, that PBO. Love that face!!
All hail! Congrats Anna.
ADMIRAL CHEESY PUFFS!
At ease, Shipmate!
Sure am. Gonna eat some bar-b-q spareribs in about an hour and all will be right with me!
Ooooh, delicious – happy dining Shipmate!
Let there be no doubt that I will.
Good Morning everyone. Congrats Anna.
Happy Labor Day all you hard working folks. Thank you for your hard work. http://t.co/uNfRqMj9BS— CarolMae (@CarolMaeWY) September 02, 2013
Happy Labor Day TOD Familia!! Gonna kick-back, I hope?

Congress: "We're not getting enough info from the administration." Congress: "No way we're coming back early from vacation." #Syria— Barracks O'Bama (@P0TUS) September 02, 2013
Okay maybe I’m being nitpicky… but we are NOT going to war. A military strike that is strategic- and I think meant to disable weapons- is not ‘going to war’ . I did not hear President Obama talk about toppling a govt, or attacking troops.. or for that matter declaring war. Am I missing something- I ask sincerely- ??
No sherijr, you aren’t missing anything, and this has been made MORE than clear for the past several days that PBO does not intend to “go to war.” Any talks of war is deliberately pushed by the MSM/GOP, etc who want to distort the situation and misinform the public as usual.
And increase their pathetic ratings!
thanks hf, I don’t watch teevee, what I’m seeing are too many comments & tweets using that word war very loosely and arbitrarily, imo. But I did listen to POTUS’ speech and I sure didn’t hear him say the stuff I’m reading now. Folks ought to realize every military strike/ intervention is not a call to war. And for all Assad’s or Putin’s tough talk, I bet neither of those ‘leaders’ are in any hurry to start a war with Barack Obama.
no sherijr, you are not nitpicky, you are bringing the correct words; “military strike” to the fore.
whew thank you GGail.
No. You have it exactly right:) This is NOT GOING TO WAR…. talking point shuffle….
Say it Loud DF!! Thanks

well done PF, will retweet, it apparently needs to be said and resaid. thank you!
I am with you sherijr. The only people I hear clamoring for war are the media, John McCain and Lindsey Graham.
hey Nath yep we can always count on McCain to war monger.. he never met a war he couldn’t love~
Thank you! This has been driving me nuts!
One wouldn’t know it from the HuffPo screaming headline of “War Week”
Here you guys are….talking to myself on the last thread…..again!
To sum it all up…….
Congrats Anna for being first here. Love ya, Ms. Chips. My vacation in Costa Rica was a blast! Leaving for Ga. on this Wed. I missed you all here very much. I will be lurking for months in order to catch up.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. BOBFR!
Helloooooooo LDS, just replied to you in the last thread!! Completely missed that you were going to Costa Rica, what a wonderful trip! Mighty fine to have you back!
I got your reply. It was some hogging on before I left. You must go to Costa Rica. You owe in to your mind, body, and soul!
I literally cried everyday because of the Rain Forrest. I knew I was a nature person, but this experience made me so much aware. I have never felt so much peace and harmony in my life. The people are so humble and grateful. The country is so beautiful. The fruits are so tasteful. I cannot eat pineapple here anymore. In have tasted the real thing!
Ms. Chips, please go. July and August is raining season…..it was kind to us.
Ha, we keep missing each other, just replied to you again on last thread!
You’ve sold it to me LDS, big time!!! Sounds joyous! Thriiiiiiiiiiiiilled you had such a great time!
Were you serious about the German influence LDS, I had no idea
Oops! “so much going on”(up above)
Yes. On the bus tour to the Rain Forrest we saw a German bakery. And I think I heard the tour guide mention they have a “German Town”
I believe I read here that some of the Nazis fled there after Hitler’s demise. It may be similar to their flight to Brazil and other discrete places
I had absolutely no clue LDS, what a surprising connection, although as you said it might be down to the arrival of Nazis on the run there. Amazing.
After PBO is no longer our President..I have a dream that I will buy a small beach house there and just hang:) I’m a simple person…maybe I can tutor kids, something to fill my heart and make it happy…..and live out my days. Never heard anyone that has been there say a bad thing about it. I just know that some days, I really ache to renew my mind, body and spirit…..
I highly recommend it. Everyone morning I woke up and felt that I was in Paradise!
I literally cried when I was I the massage table….. I felt guilty feeling that peaceful. I wanted everyone to know what that feels like.
I am not any medicines, if I were I would have seriously thought about throwing them all away and move there.
We caught our own fish and cooked it on the beach. To experience that again meant so much to me…..
I seriously want to get on a plane right now:) So glad that you felt that complete bliss:)
WHAT?!! Bobfr, had a birthday party and didn’t invite me? I thought he was my friend?
vc, Bobfr may throttle me when he finally reads the R&S and this thread. I think he mentioned it last night not realizing a lurker (me) would notice it and blab to Chipsticks. If he comes looking for me, tell him I’m in an undisclosed bunker
Not to worry, GGail. If Bobfr comes looking for you, he will first have to explain why *I* wasn’t personally informed of his special day, and by then he will have been distracted from his hunt…..I hope. BTW, is today his special day, or was it yesterday?
Last night (Sunday), he stated “that he turned 66 a week ago today”.
I’m depending on you vc, to do what you do so well….distract
An entire week!!! This is worse than I thought. You think I should just cry buckets when he shows up – I’ve not had occasion to try this before, but I’ve been told that men fear women’s tears???
Gurl, use whatever you think will work….because…he’s surfaced….and I’ve gone into hiding!!!
The doc is a very modest man who doesn’t draw much attention to himself. He spends all his time and energy caring for other people and standing up strong in support and defense of our beloved President.
I told you the plot thickens! Syria’s govt is now all upset that the big, bad US wants to enforce the agreed upon world norms that CW never be used…but they want to use them against their own people…women and children just collateral damage? Seriously? I tell you what. I wouldn’t be surprised if Iran’s President came out against Syria’s use of these weapons and the whole dynamic changed again. Notice Bibi has been noticeably quiet lately.
For all the smart asses talking about how PBO was “indecisive” ” waited too long” blah, blah, blah…..I feel in my gut that PBO and his advisors calculated every imaginable scenario and its impact…exponentially so. So he wasn’t being indecisive and he wasn’t waiting too long…he was doing the excruciatingly difficult work of being a world leader. Something these sheeple will NEVER understand and NEVER know anything about! Nor do they CARE to understand. They treat everything as if it were a game, they have no use for science, for history, for facts, for anything remotely pertaining to all the geopolitical, economic, and moral implications of any of this. They are shallow and seem not to have the capacity to think outside their very small, tunnelled mindset.
I trust this man. He has earned my trust and the trust of every thinking individual on this planet, as far as I’m concerned. He does what he says, he means what he says, and much thought as gone into his plan. I respect a President that does this….not been one of those in a long, long while.
So to all the armchair talkers…many of whom jumped on the GWB bandwagon with NO HESITATION OR QUESTIONS…. STFU! None of you have ANY cred to critique this President on anything.
I thank you so much for your post. Even though I just got back into the country and I am still catching up here, I applaud our President for the way he and his Administration is handling this situation. As I was reading the entire speech, I thought to myself that the President would be better off if he took this vote to kindergartens. They probably would be more knowledgable than those pathetic clowns in Washington.
I think you are on to something here……
APPLAUSE df… you said it right !
Well stated ! I agree with every single word you said. I’ve watched and LISTENED, really LISTENED to President Obama almost daily for five years now. He seems like one of the very few elected people in Washington who really thinks things through. And you see he’s always taking into consideration the LONG game. What are the LONG TERM consequences of his decisions?
In the media and in the blogosphere ( some “left sites” in particular), it’s pretty discouraging to see the superficiality of the debate. President Obama asked many important questions in his last statement. What are the consequences for the world if there is NO enforcement of international rules? Listening to the President, I sensed he was basically saying that the UN is becoming dangerously dysfunctional, thus it’s of no use. And it could lead to a more chaotic world. And yet, almost NOBODY is talking about that. This is a fundamental question, a question of great importance for the next decades.
For the record, I’m convinced that President Obama won’t get any approval for military strikes. No way. I think, I hope he and his team have never had any illusions. If they know it will never pass in Congress, the question is what is their strategy. Because I’m sure they have one. Gosh I would love to know what’s going on behind the scenes.
I agree. On a simpler thought….I wonder what kind of parents these people are? I’m an educator and I’ve raised two children of my own. Kids are what I do. If for ONE NY SECOND, I EVER showed my children (my own or my school children) that I didn’t mean what I said, didn’t set the boundaries and follow through, then the KIDS would run all over the adults (me!) and take more and more liberties with things they shouldn’t…the things that were out of bounds. This is Parenting 101. I’m not there to be their friend, I’m there to teach them and make them understand that there are consequences for NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES! WTF is so hard to understand about that? The “hard part” is actually doing what you said you would with your initial warning! Otherwise, you aren’t the one in charge anymore and the children are running the asylum….that’s how ENTITLEMENT element takes over. So yes…I question the very basic parenting skills of these idiots. They unleash all the little ones that have no idea that teachers mean business and we’re not there to deal with their temper tantrums every time we tell them something they don’t want to hear and hold them accountable for their actions….or lack thereof:)
I was posting almost the exact same thing df, now I don’t have to. Let me just say that I completely trust way the President has handled this Syria situation. He’s going forward in the correct manner no matter what the shit in their pants rethugs, emprogs and MSM say. That’s how he’s always conducted himself and that’s the way he will continue. This is an awful situation to have to deal with. Lives are being lost and will be lost. My heart goes out to the President because I know this is weighing heavy upon his heart. Give me a President that is thoughtful, compassionate and clear headed in serious situations likes this as apposed to a war mongering moron any day.
Perfect statement, Hf. It’s truly amazing how superficial and ignorant our media is. I grew up actually turning on the news to learn information about what was happening in the world. The people who were journalists in those days had been war correspondents and knew the difference between propaganda and truth. Today, it’s all propaganda and truth is something to be played with and manipulated. Right now the entire media is playing the ‘hate Obama’ game. They have become so obvious about it, that it’s all unwatchable, unreadable and not worth listening to. Ordinary, unthinking people pick up this attitude and the hate and ignorance multiplies. We, as a people, aren’t really worthy of the great president we’ve been granted. Fortunately there are tens of millions of us who love him and support him. And I think that sustains him.
PS…I also think that this situation is much too complex for all of them…they just can’t keep all those balls in the air and understand the implications of each and every one…separately or as a whole…. this is way, way, way beyond their scope. Out of their league completely, so they take the easy way out and spew bs all day. As a debater in high school, the first lesson we learned:
If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.
BRAVA! I have no doubt that PBO and his team have gamed this out to infinity.
Woo whoo DF. Very well said. Bravo!!!
Thanks DF for this excellent comment! I agree with everything you said.
Indeed DF – well stated!!!!
can someone please pass this around? Thanks:)
Russia may send lawmakers to US to discuss Syria….
Russia coming to America to school the Congress against the President is like allowing the Fox into the hen house to persuade the Rooster to not guard the Hen House…
all these maneuverings…More legacy of the lies of Bush/Cheney
hmm I think Netanyahu already tried that BS
the only pull this kind of stuff has.. is with the media- who is already bent sideways to gop.. and the gop/teabaggers. The rest of us- not so much.
ha. “Russian Lawmakers”. that phrase alone is worth at least one cynical chuckle.

Happy Labor Day, everyone. I come from a family of union members and was one myself during my 30 year career as a teacher. The middle class grew as a result of organized labor. Even though we are under assault, we fight on. Have a great day.
PS. As for Syria, PBO’s move will go a long way toward making everyone, here and abroad, stand up and be counted. It will also bring about the help that we need. Furthermore, the days of the “imperial presidency” are on the way out. Our president’s long view approach to every issue is one of the many things that I admire in him.

the russians want a strike. they are afraid congress will vote no just to spite PBO. they want to come in the hope of fostering unity between PBO and congress and uniting them against the Russians. it’s such pathetic reverse psychology. Personally, I hope the congress votes no and PBO does not strike. the us needs to get out of the middle east – the only reason they are in is to protect Israel – grateful and gracious Bibi.
It’s plainly obvious that you hate Israel and that is why you insist on dragging it in without any shred of evidence. For the record, the use of the heinous chemical weapons is outlawed by international law. It’s the Assad regime, not Israel, which used chemical weapons on its own people, killing thousands, including hundreds of women and children. All the President is calling for is a targeted military response to make sure that the Assad regime does not use those weapons again also to face the consequences for blatantly using chemical weapons in violation of international law and norms.
Two weeks ago, I shared that I had just said goodbye to a group of soldiers deploying to Afghanistan…many for the 3rd and 4th time. Around 11:00a yesterday, I received a conference call from some of them…checking in. I put the call on speaker so everyone could hear. In the middle of the call, we heard someone yell “incoming”…meaning there was a missile headed their way. We heard the yelling, the scrambling for cover and finally the blast before the line went dead.
Needless to say, I am not in favor of Syrian intervention. Clearly, it is not the loss of life that is the determining factor, because more than 90,000 people were killed before there was a claim of chemical poisoning. To date, those who have died from chemical attacks total only 2,700…hardly what I would call mass destruction. Such low numbers, while devastating, give me the impression that the perpetrator is simply “looking to start something”. Is it really Assad, the Rebels or an outside agitator? As the good General Smedley said, “War is a Rackett”, and while the strike the President proposes cannot be interpreted as war…the question has to be…where and how will it all end?
I am happy the President called for Congress to vote, even though we all knew they would not cut short their vacation to do so…they want no parts of this decision. Having to share in it takes away their right to bash the President and continually bitch and moan.
As I’ve said before, I have total trust of my President. It’s everyone else I don’t trust….some of his advisors, those in the intelligence community, other politicians (Republican and Democrat) certainly not the media. Do I believe they will sacrifice facts and lives just to set the President up and keep “defense dollars” flowing…yes I do.
I can understand where you are coming from. I do however want to point out that the use of the heinous chemical weapons is strictly outlawed by international law. That is what President Obama is responding to. To say that he is intervening in Syria is not accurate.
Hi Nath. Intervention may be the wrong terminology, but then it’s all the same to me. Trust that I truly do understand, but that understanding does not sway me. The fact that it is an infraction of international law is totally unimpressive to me…have you observed what a farcical mess our domestic law is? [Don't go crazy on me ]
What would happen if the President announced that he refuses to engage his people in anymore conflicts? We can speculate, but we don’t really know. Just know that in the final analysis, I’ll be a loyal soldier whatever the call…I’ve got my President’s back.
By the way…I received an email from Afghanistan about an hour ago. Everyone is safe and unharmed.
In case this hasn’t been posted (I’m not caught up)—–U.N. Sec.-Gen. said he is convinced by the evidence he’s seen that the Syrian govt. was responsible for the chem. attacks. He sees no participation by the U.N. tho in any kind of military response other than defend neighboring Turkey.
If the Un does not defend its position/treaties on the use Chemical Weapons…then all those resolutions are not worth the paper they are written on.
It is just because certain member nations have veto power. Russia is preventing the UN from acting by using its veto power. This is the same veto power the US has used for decades to prevent the UN from taking action against Israel.
Is it time to get rid of veto power…or to modify it at least
The United Nations has no military force of its own. It relies on the military of member nations. But even more disturbingly is the structure of the U.N. Only the U.N. Security Council can authorize the use of force to enforce U.N. treaties or maintain international order. However any one of the five Permanent Members of the Security Council (U.S., Russia, China , U.K. and France) can use the veto to prevent the U.N. from acting. This is exactly what Russia and China have been doing with respect to Syria.
Dotster, you may want to make a correction in your post. The Chicago Tribune article you linked to talks about the Secretary General of NATO and not the “U.N.Sec-Gen.”
Oh—thanks. My bad.
You are welcome. Thanks for the linking the article. It’s important to know that the Secretary General of NATO backs the President and the Sec. of State that it was the Assad regime that used chemical weapons on its people.
Correction—-as nathkathun kindly pointed out—-it was Sec. Gen. of NATO, not U.N. who made the statements re. Syria. Apologize.
Good Afternoon TOD and Happy Labor Day.
Happy Belated Birthday Bobfr!!!!!!!!!
I hope everyone has had a nice relaxing weekend. I’ve been with my extended (large) family at the beach and I’m glad that I had the opportunity to address their concerns about Syria. I tell you our media is the absolute worse. I had Aunts and Cousins all approach me about us going to “War with Syria”. I need to send ABC, CBS , NBC, CNN and MSNBC a bill for doing there job for them. They are about as useless as our do nothing Congress.
Donna, if I were to design a school curriculum, I would make ‘listening skills” a course requirement. People simply do not listen to each other or they hear what they want to hear and call it a day. The president could not be more clear in his statements, but even those supposedly trained to report “news,” don’t listen, but instead report whatever they happened to dream up while the president was talking. People used to depend on listening for their survival. Now we’re so wrapped up in our own bubbles that actually paying attention to what someone says seems a waste of time. Easier to just make it up or get a snippet, twist it and pass it on as truth.
Very well said, JackieG! Listening, as well as reading attentively to details, are absolutely important qualities for any one interested in disseminating TRUTH.
Thank you Donna And do send the #NEWSTAINERS a bill
Bob, there was a rumor that you had a birthday last Sunday. If so, I hope you have a very happy belated birthday. Every single birthday should be savored and enjoyed for as many days as you can.

Amazing democrats and republican against the strike, are now coming out of the woodwork. And are all over the news.
They will not defend government spending, when the debt ceiling battle comes to fruition next month.
This is unreal!!
Ahh, rand Paul is the one who wants to talk to Russian delegates and he invited them to talk to congress.
I did not know that Rand Paul was elected Majority Leader of the Senate and was in a position to determine who did or did not address the Senate.
Wow! A U.S. Senator trusts foreign adversaries more than he trusts an elected President of the United States! Is there any more doubt that these haters of President Obama are heavily invested in white privilege?
And all those who have hated the “communists” since forever – will think this is a grand idea? Supporting those who support government ownership of ALL resources? The election of a black man is sending some folks into the land of dementia. It is hard to recognize the US congress at the minute.
I have decided to skip all of my political programs I usually TiVo and skip through this week. I will check in here so I am not completely in the dark about what is going on as watching the scare tactics of the media does nothing for my mental health. Thank goodness we have the President we wanted now. I have my own opinions which are largely anti war leaning, but I also can see both sides and as my late Mom used to tell me we do not have ALL of the information to make an intelligent decision. This is when I trust in our President and ask God to help him with his decisions.

BREAKING: Passenger airplane hijacked at #Tripoli International Airport in #Jordan via @VoiceofRussia bit.ly/18xvYET— George Mapp (@Dobroyeutro) September 02, 2013
On pins and needles about this development.
During the 1970s there were a string of plane hijackings, but as I recall, there wasn’t a huge loss of life.
Just can’t remember now the outcome of those hijackings.
No matter how you feel about Syria; whether you feel US should intervene or not, I think this is exactly what the POTUS wanted the nation to do, have a debate/discussion. People are surfacing their fears and anxieties, as well as their worries and compassion for the Syrian people.
This discussion will be one of the most memorable and have one of the greatest impacts on our nation’s foreign intervention doctrine in modern time. It is much needed. Many people will change positions as they listen and learn. We will come to see our nation differently and I believe as the POTUS stated we will grow stronger as a nation.
One caution I would offer is to not judge people for their initial thinking. Many people will shift views as the conversation is allowed to proceed. Disparaging people for their initial sentiment will only shut down the conversation. We must remember that many people are still shell shocked from 8 years of cheney/ bush and are afraid to engage in any efforts in the the ME.
My secretary lost her brother in Iraq, and at first wanted nothing to do with Syria. She said it was their problem and nothing we would do could stop Assad anyway. As we talked about the children being killed, she is now open to limited strikes. But initially she was feeling that Iraq was a lost cause, and that bush sent her brother to die for nothing. People are still struggling with these issues and we have to understand their pain.
Great comment Claire. Very insightful!
Do we hate this black man that much that we would invite someone to speak to our congress that harbored a fugitive from justice that leaked classified documents that have the potential of exposing how we protect ourselves? As a nation have we fallen this far down? People are dying at the hands of a madman and the people that should know better are out and about trying to score political points. The other day my son caught me trying to slip money under his pillow because his tooth fell out, he said to me “dad, I know you and mom put money under the pillow.” It shocked me for a moment because at that very moment my son is beginning to make sense of the world. I said all that to say that we as a nation are losing our sense of the world.
Don’t judge an entire nation by the antics of a few showboating politicians. The U.S. has a strong history of anti-interventionalism. Many did not want the U.S. to enter WWII. I think the American people yearn for unbiased, truthful information concerning the Syrian situation. Unfortunately, we are saddled with a corrupt and willfully ignorant MSM that is the communications arm of the corrupt and willfully ignorant GOP. We will find out soon enough if this nations is capable of having a substantive political debate. If it proves to be an impossible task, I lay blame squarely at the feet of the collapse of the Fourth Estate.
“a few?” how about the entire goddamn Republican Party, the MSM and the emoprogs and the professional lefters.
The “usual suspects” is all I’m saying. If they were indicative of the American public writ large, we would have President Romney deciding what to do in Syria and not PBO.
So Rand Paul wants to talk to the Russians, ok let him. This guy is just like that asshole in the first “Die Hard” movie that thought he could snort coke and out think the hostage takers.
He should join Snowden and live the good life as a guest of the Russians

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives regarding the importance of preventing the Government of Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability.
Bill Summary & Status
112th Congress (2011 – 2012)
H.R. 4310: Authorizing War Against Iran and Preparing the Military for it. While H. Res. 568 undermines our diplomatic efforts and lowers the bar for war, H.R. 4310, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 begins military preparations for war. Section 1221 makes military action against Iran a U.S. policy. Section 1222 directs our armed forces to prepare for war. –
CW or these WMD (NW)….they are BOTH wrong! Yet they were all onboard with this! Syria’s people are “ok” to die without intervention? Iran’s people..Meh? Is that what they’re saying? I find this argument lacking and hypocritical.
Where is all this Rand Paul talk coming from ?
From the bowels of Congress.
Diana Nyad is less than 2 miles from the shoreline in Key West.
I feel like she’s going to make it this time:) How grueling that must be…no shark cage, either!
As we once again begin to hear claims that President Obama is weak due to his recent decision to go to Congress about taking military action against Syria, I can’t help but recall that those charges have often in the past been coupled with statements about how he needs to “man up” or “grow a set of balls.” In other words, his so-called “weakness” is often conflated with being too feminine (as if that was something really bad). So it likely contains what Nezua referred to as a “nexus.”
As I’ve written about before, I find that nexus in a conflation of power with dominance. Whether we’re talking about male dominance over female, white dominance over people of color, or US dominance over the world…all power is defined as having power over others. And anyone who doesn’t wield that kind of power is weak.
Another important distinction is that between leadership and domination. Effective leaders facilitate the interdependence or collaboration that can create more “power to” — based on the interests of all parties. Domination is the exercise of “power over” –a relationship that meets interests of the “power wielder” at the expense of everyone else.
- Marshall Ganz
Its a way out of the authoritarian embrace of an imperial presidency. It is a call towards the ongoing work to perfect our union as a government of, by, and for ALL the people. It is a statement to the world that the United States is ready to leave the failed policies of subjugating others for our own interests and move towards a foreign policy based on partnership. It will require all of us to expand our moral imagination. But it is also about how one voice can change the world. Its how “we become the change we want to see.”
