Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said “it’s appropriate” for President Barack Obama to seek approval from Congress before taking military action in Syria.

“It’s appropriate that he ask for that,” Warren said at the annual Central Massachusetts AFL-CIO Labor Day breakfast, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

“What the Assad regime did is reprehensible, but we have to consider what’s in America’s best interest,” Warren said.

Well, good for her! Think I saw a favorable tweet from her, too. Hope more follow.

    • September 2, 2013 at 8:47 pm

This doesn’t sound encouraging to me. Sounds like someone trying to lay the groundwork for voting no, but not actually offering any alternatives. America’s best interests will be served by avoiding new enemies and being visible in denouncing brutal tyrants who use chemical warfare on their innocent citizens – including women and children. I’ll wait and see…

      • September 2, 2013 at 9:25 pm

Theo, I would rather have a senator give careful and thoughtful consideration than engage in knee jerk anti-Obama negativity. Thoughtful discussion was what the president asked for. He did ask Congress to rubber stamp his proposal.

Listen to the depth and character of his voice, of his words. AMAZING SPEECH, one of his BEST, full of the poetry of his soul. This is the man we believe in, this is the man we work to support and protect.

Senator Barack Obama speaks at Rosa Parks’ funeral, Nov. 2005:

        September 2, 2013 at 9:39 pm

An excerpt from the book, “To Serve the Living,” which includes one of my favorite Ethel Kennedy quotes:

” … Although he was not invited to speak at Coretta Scott King’s funeral, Senator Barack Obama attended the service, which he later admitted to one of his aides was ‘pretty intimidating’ … Obama’s presence at the funerals of both Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King was prophetic and served as a reminder that in African American history, funerals were often the place where the seeds of political freedom were sown … during the [Coretta Scott King] funeral service … Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert Kennedy, leaned over to Obama and whispered, ‘The torch is being passed to you.’ Caught off guard by the remark, Obama later confessed, ‘A chill went up my spine.’”

        Hallelujah, America!

Thank you JoB – I had not seen that before. The President’s voice had 2 parts – 1 part as it is today – but with some words he sounded so like MLK. He is a scholar of all things – including the Bible.

I have heard him use that inflection before, as well, usually I believe when connected to a church setting or prayer breakfast. He always sets the perfect, genuine tone. He may not be perfect (nobody is!) but he is definitely genuine.

            September 2, 2013 at 10:40 pm

In my Presidential knowledge – Truman to Obama – I have not known anyone more towards perfect – nor more genuine.

That he is a politician I am entranced at the genuine always being present. I have not seen that in many, if any – other politicians.

I agree with you 99ts, though my conscious and informed memory of presidents only goes as far as JFK. I was born a few months after Truman became President following the death of FDR. I barely remember Ike (Dwight Eisenhower) though I was a teenager when he left office. But I’ve certainly known all presidents since JFK. President Obama, as far as I am concerned, is the most genuine, down-to-earth and empathetic President, in my conscious life time.

I call myself a “true” baby boomer – 9 months after my dad came home from war :)

I mainly know of Truman through my Dad – but remember all the rest. I celebrated (terrible way to talk about war – but it was what we did) that war through all the years of Ike – who was always the war hero – never the President. My mother wasn’t originally a JFK fan (didn’t much like the catholics), but he won her over. She would have adored PBO – I am sad she wasn’t here to see him.

Wow, JOB! You and Meta are sharing some gems of the President’s speeches that I totally missed. Once again, in this brief tribute to Rosa Parks, then Senator Obama revealed the depth of his character. Thank you JOB for sharing it. All of these documentary evidence of our President’s character must be well guarded and preserved for future history. The President’s enemies are already gearing up to completely distort his character and his legacy. We must counter and defeat them with factual documentation.

      September 3, 2013 at 1:13 am

Thank you so much, Meta, for sharing this. I tried to play it in on the previous thread without much success. Thankfully, I was able to listen to it this time. I don’t care what any one else says, but President Obama will go down in history as a truly great man. The Media, taking the page out of Karl Rove’s political dirty tricks operation book of attacking the opponent’s strength, has been trying to indoctrinate us that President Obama is not good at communication. But in my 67 years on this earth I can think of no other person whose words and demeanor are as inspiring and stimulating as those of President Obama. I’ve repeatedly wrote on this blog how blessed I feel to have lived long enough to see President Obama elected President of the United States. Every time I listen to his speeches, including those he made before he was president, and read the words he wrote or has written, I feel so good to be one of his strongest supporters.

The next thing you’ll here from the rwnjs is cries for impeachment for making Congress earn their pay.

You know what, Yardarm, I used to get angry about the obviously blatant hatred of the president. Lately, however, some of this Obama Derangement Syndrome (ODS) has been, for me, quite hilarious! Yep, there are people now already attacking him for not acting like an Imperial (dictator) President. I suppose they now want to impeach him for agreeing with the non-stop demands, from members of Congress of both parties, that he get authorization before taking military action in Syria.

I mean the ODS seems to be afflicting people from all political and ideological spectrums. For example, I read somewhere today that the Harlem Congressman, Charles Rangel (the one who inherited the Congressional district of the great Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.) was on T.V. criticizing the President for not taking unilateral action once he learned that the Assad regime in Syria has used chemical weapons on its people. Interestingly, the same Charles Rangel signed a letter, drafted by the Progressive wing of Congressional Democrats, demanding that President Obama must seek Congressional authorization before taking any military action in Syria. Moreover, the same Charles Rangel said that he is likely to vote NO on the President’s request for taking military action against the Syrian regime that used the internationally banned chemical weapons against its people.

Somebody please tell me: how in the world should I take these Obama haters seriously? Then there is the other nagging issue in the back of my head: Just in case the Right Wing teabag lunatics in Congress decide to impeach the President can we count on the CBC to be solidly behind President Obama the way they were with President Clinton in the Lewiinsky affair? Reading about what Charles Rangel said today leaves with little confidence that they would.

Marilyn, Layla, and Nena20409, when I see photos like this;, I let out a shout that almost wakes the entire neighborhood because I see so much of my teaching from scripture from Sunday School and later my young adult life in college. Remember a scripture of “I will make even your enemies will even to be at peace with you, if you live upright. Talk about preparing a table before mine enemies.” That photo makes me go into a state of rememrance of how I pray for President Obama.

Remember, Sen. Graham saying that he thought that Amb. Rice(at that time) was not too bright, he thought.) Now, look at Lindsey having to sit across the National Security Advisor of the President of the United States, Dr. Susan Rice, National Security Advisor yes, that is who she is, Sen. Graham. “Not too bright.” I beg to differ with you, Oh, Mr. Senator. You must watch what you say with your words Mr. Senator, because sometime you might just have to eat them in front of the very person you were trying to put down. Just saying, Mr. Senator.HZ

Linda, Nancy Pelosi has been the most consistent member of Congress supporting President Obama. The same is true of Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid. Sadly, it’s some member of the Congressional Black Caucus, like Charles Rangel, that are likely to vote No on the President’s request. It’s really incumbent on all of us as citizens to contact our members of Congress (Representatives and Senators) to urge them to Support the President. I’ve sent e-mails to my Congresswoman and my two U.S. Senators urging them to support the President. Hopefully I will hear from them soon. Sen. Barbara Boxer is usually very good at responding quickly.

Secretary of State Kerry remains busy! He offered a video address from Washington to leaders ” … from the 15 Pacific Island Forum … nations [who] will formally meet Tuesday to finalize the ‘Majuro Declaration’ on climate change — which aims to reinvigorate global efforts to contain global warming by working toward binding agreements to reduce carbon emissions.”

” … Kerry pushed the case for immediate action on climate change Monday, as Pacific island nations most at risk from rising sea levels prepared to up the pressure on the world’s worst polluters … ‘The science is clear. It is irrefutable, and it is alarming,’ Kerry told delegates gathering for a climate conference in Majuro, the capital of the Marshall Islands … he added that there was still time to prevent some of the worst impacts of climate change, but that ‘the people of the Pacific islands know as well as anyone that we also need to prepare communities for the impacts that are already being felt.’”
