Sec. Kerry is giving one hell of a testimony. So far so good on having Pres. Obama’s back. I’ve been pleased with his job as SoS and he hasn’t disappointed.

Now the dorks come out of the woodwork to re-write President Obama’s speech. He has not given up any of his powers to call up the military and put boots on the ground, although most of us don’t want to see that and that’s not his current plan. Krystal is misrepresenting, with her snark du jour, thinking she’s being oh so cute:

What I understood SOS Kerry to say, there will be no boots on the ground unless there is a stock of chemical weapons which could fall into the wrong hands and we have the chance to get to the weapons and destroy them. Why must these two bit pundits like Ms. Ball try to make trouble where trouble is not.

      • September 3, 2013 at 4:24 pm

Randi Rhodes is discussing Syria and as someone said on the previous thread her hair is on fire also. I respect her opinion but she is totally missing the point. She says all we need to do is to give humanitarian aid. Everyone seem to be missing the fact that there is an International Treaty banning chemical weapons.

        • September 3, 2013 at 4:33 pm

There seems to be a willful misunderstanding here. If you and I and the others here at TOD get, it, COS, Randi is being deliberately obtuse. Humanitarian aid is absolutely essential for the living refugees, especially the children. But it won’t help those who were murdered with sarin gas by Assad.

Exactly right. The people screaming for no war have closed their minds and ears to anything being said. They are stubbornly, willfully ignorant. It doesn’t look good on them.

Not only doesn’t it look good on them, Sandy, it makes them look like cold, heartless individuals who don’t care that Assad has used chemical weapons to kill his own citizens. They also fail to note that if Assad feels he can get away with doing it once, and no one objects, it emboldens him to do it again and again. He develops the habit of thinking that since no one did anything, he can do whatever he wants. Also, having chemical weapons in his power is dangerous. Who’s to say that he wouldn’t use them on Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, and other countries in the region? This is one of the things that makes this a very important national security issue not only for the U.S. but for the Middle East.

I did not hear or get the impression that PBO wants to start bombing as soon as he gets Congress’s approval. I heard PBO say we need to retaliate solely with military action, I did not hear bombing Syria into oblivion. Someone on the radio talked sanctions about hitting Assad financially, freezing his money, I think Assad is thinking like everyone else bracing for bombs when it could be absolutely something else or someone else. Randi and all the pundits are going to have major egg on their face when once again PBO does things on HIS timetable and not the media or anyone else’s.

In the 90s the left and right were hollering the same things about Bill Clinton and his bombing campaign in Kosovo and Balkans. What we got was peace and the preservation of life. No American soldiers were lost. Thousands of Bosnian Muslims and Kosovars were saved and allowed to return to their homes. In both instances at the outset the bombing campaigns were not popularly supported. He didn’t get Congressional approval but did it anyway with a good result for peace and humanitarian outcome.

It’s a beautiful America with Barack Obama as President.

I missed Sec Kerry, what exactly did he say about boots on the ground? My Twitter TL is lighting up.

He said that Pres. Obama will not allow boots on the ground. That he wants authorization for a limited strike because Assad used chemical weapons. During Kerry’s testimony, Bob Corker tried to say that Pres. Obama wants boots on the ground for all parts of our interaction with Syria. Kerry pushed back and said no, we will not use boots on the ground with respect to the civil war. We’re not engaging in their civil war to that extent. Corker asked what would happen if Assad retaliated. Kerry said the U.S. knows how to deal with Assad if he is foolish enough to retaliate.

My take? The only time we might see boots on the ground is if Seal Team Six sneaks in to take Assad out if he is foolish enough to respond to the limited strike.

      • September 3, 2013 at 4:24 pm

Thanks UT. Just starting to watch it now, seeing people claiming he said boots on the ground would be justified “if Syria imploded” and chemical weapons might fall into terrorist hands??

Wow….where are they getting that? Such hyperbole. Kerry has taken great pains to tell the Senate Foreign Relations Committee over and over again that Pres. Obama does not want boots on the ground. He wants a limited strike. He repeated it over and over again and told the Senate that he wants that to enter his testimony tick-tock and Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) – (I believe is the chairman of the committee since Democrats control the Senate) – said he would make sure that point was highlighted. Kerry said that in accordance with the limited strike, Pres. Obama and other allies want to fund the moderate opposition further than they have done. He wants them to have intelligence training so they can defend themselves better. He said the U.S. will not be going to war; the opposition will fight their own war.

I read today that Saudi Arabia has already trained and reinserted opposition troops into Syria and the difference is noticeable. PBO wants to do the same thing using the CIA to train them. Some Americans hear what they want to hear, ut, because to hear what is actually being said causes a disruption in their talking points.

In other news……..Tonight is the final NYC Mayoral debate.
The MSM is billing it as a “cage match” or KillBill.
NBC is carrying the first 60 minutes on TV and streaming the final 30 minutes. I will try to watch it all and post my thoughts later.
Last debate was carried on CSPAN so I will check that now and get back here to let TOd know if it will be available there.

The wind has shifted in the NY newspapers. Front page Times today photo of the deBlasio family dancing at the West Indian Day Parade. Bill already 6’5″ is a foot off the ground and his wife and kids have their knees bent and their arms up. They all look joyful and lovely.
Chris Quinn and Bill Thompson’s pix are buried on page 16.

Good afternoon! I don’t know if anyone here caught the syrian ambassador on cnn or not, but what struck me was how his talking points were all about trying to make syria the victim! I think that was their plan, however PBO’s decision to be patient and get congressional approval makes that TP seem as laughable as it really is. I think PBO sent not only our feckless media on a tailspin, but also sent the whole syrian attempt to portray themselves as victims of western agression right down the crapper.

Well played mr president. again. :) can we just make PBO president for life?

I’m I missing something? Did PBO ask Congress to go to WAR? When has a surgical strike turn into a war? Assad and Putin are smart enough not to mess with the man who got Bin Laden. I guess I will have to stop listening to Randi for the rest of the week.

You didn’t miss anything. The emos have proven as ignorant as Freepers. They don’t care what war actually means. It just sounds good to keep telling themselves that PBO is a warmonger.
