40% is the cutoff!!

I sent this message to Tweety (the real message is in @Lehrich44′s tweet, above my response):

The reason why the president was able to make this argument is because he isn’t arguing for war. This isn’t about whether Obama convinced the American people. This is about Obama convincing Assad that his best course is to embrace the diplomatic solution.

‘There can be only one!’ Thank you, Mr. President.
Another “Highlander” fan. Yes, there really can be only one – one President at a time, and only ever one President Obama.
Absolutely, theo67! This man, this time….I’m so glad I lived long enough to see it. I lost heart in ’68 and never thought I’d get it back. With this incredible team in the White House we have all become engaged in ways beyond my wildest dreams.
I’m looking forward again.
I came here for a breath of fresh air. I don’t know why I still go to Huffington Post. Habit, I guess. I found myself neck deep in Obama haters and people suggesting that Putin is somehow superior to Obama. I mean I was stunned. Did you ever think you’d see the day when a Russian dictator was praised over an American President? I think to the day of the USA that talked about “pinko” and “Commies” and wonder how on earth probably some of these same people are licking the toes of a former KGB man. I mean seriously? And it’s not just American media pushing that “Putin is awesome” line, either. My huzzie’s French friend said that it was all over the French news that “Putin is awesome”, too. My huz’s jaw was on the floor and was quite quickly correcting the misinformation his friend was fed. Sometimes I want to pinch myself and wake up from the crazy. It feels like those dreams where you want to get away and it’s like you’re paralyzed.
I think it’s really important to realize that there are many media outlets who have no interest in presenting any semblance of objectivity. Listen for yourself and don’t bother with those whose business it is to make money off of conflict and crazy hyperbole. It’s just a money machine.
Thank you to you for the shoulder shake. I need to realize that these places are designed to stress people out. Ta.
Well, folks here no me- I will play the proverbial race card, but did not German pows get better treatment here than the AA soldiers during WW 2 ? No surprise to me that white men prefer a foreigner of an oppressive nation to their very own black, humanistic and freedom-loving president. Tell me who the real “patriots” are !!
Here I go again with the mispells: no s/b know
I think it’s hard to make this paradigm shift. We used to be able to trust our media sources. Now, it’s painfully clear that they all have a huge agenda and that is to make you depressed and angry at our President. Not worth the misinformed prattle and the agony.
Yesteryum, for your sanity’s sake keep away from sites that allow paid trolls to pollute the comment sections. People since the dawn of this republican have had hateful ideas and hearts. It’s just that today we see this stuff instantly on social media sites and internet posts and it seems overwhelming and new. As for France, Putin is just the fad du jour. The French flirt with far right fascists from time to time, but they don’t like living under them. Of course, if they truly prefer Putin they, like Gerard Depardieu, can always try living tin Russia.
As with meta, I thank you for the shoulder shake. I need to ignore comments on these sites. I’ve too many grey hairs already.
“Did you ever think you’d see the day when a Russian dictator was praised over an American President?”
Racism and white privilege trump political ideology!
Stay away from Huffington Post. It’s just a place of hate and stupidity.

Glenn Thrush is an asshole who works for Politico and his tweet is dumb.
Diplomacy works at its own pace. What the hell is wrong with the MSM? They speak and act like little children. They have lost perspective and their damn minds. WTF.
My satisfaction comes from knowing they will be left in the dust bins of history, while President Barack Obama will make history.
Ok all, the missus has made jerk chicken and stuffed mini peppers. Off to grub.
Mmmmm lucky you
In an exceptionally and truly paradigm shifting speech the President could not have been more precise is his prescription for both the Left and Right:
“And so to my friends on the right, I ask you to reconcile your commitment to America’s military might with a failure to act when a cause is so plainly just.
To my friends on the left, I ask you to reconcile your belief in freedom and dignity for all people with those images of children writhing in pain and going still on a cold hospital floor, for sometimes resolutions and statements of condemnation are simply not enough.”
In summation ….

That was one of the clearest, simplest and most moving presidential speeches to the nation I can imagine. It explained and it argued, point after point. Everything the president said extemporaneously at the post-G20 presser was touched on, made terser, more elegant and more persuasive.
The key points: it is an abdication of America’s exceptional role in the world to look away from the horrific use of poison gas to wipe out civilian populations and kill rebels in a civil war. Given that the world would have ignored August 21 or engaged in meaningless blather about it, Obama took the decision to say he would strike. Since such a strike was not in response to an imminent threat to our national security, Obama felt he should go to the Congress, and reverse some of the strong currents toward the imperial presidency that took hold under Dick Cheney.

Yes, he’s still a community organizer. It’s just that now, the community he is so effectively organizing is the world.
Oh please. Andrew Sullivan is such a bloody hypocrite. One minute he’s screaming Pres. Obama is an incompetent, weak fool; the next he is “praising” him. Andrew Sullivan is a disgusting prick whose writings on race and African-Americans are eyebrow raising and vomit inducing. His work last year after he instituted a paywall showed the true Sully. He’s a scumbag.
Thank you UT – couldn’t have expressed my opinion in a better way
Thank You UT. I couldn’t have said it better myself.
I lost all respect for Sully sometime ago. He is to inconsistent. My favorites are Cesca and Tomasky.
Thank you Chips for the video of the speech and for UT (NW) for the incomparable summery tweets. I got back late from a meeting, missed the live version and was very frustrated until the video appeared. As always this site is the only community square to come to in times of greatness, sorrow or stress. I actually feel sorry for those who are looking for truth and don’t know enough to come here. The president’s speech was magnificent. Those who have ears to hear and hearts and minds open to reason will be moved by the president’s remarks. Those whose ears are closed and whose hearts are hardened by hate will be moved by nothing. This speech was directed at the American people and directly pointed to Assad and Putin. It gives no leeway or mercy to Assad. Pursue the diplomatic solution or bear dire consequences he is telling Assad. Keep the pressure on your ‘ally’ he’s telling Putin. And by postponing the vote on the targeted assault, he’s really telling Congress that they can move aside while the real leaders of the world do their job. Anyone in the media who thought they knew before hand what Congress would do should now feel like a damn fool.
You’re welcome Jackie.

I’m on a telephone Town Hall conference call with my Representative Karen Bass. She’s doing a marvelous job shooting down miss information that a couple of people have voiced for their reason to not support President Obama.
I’m so happy to be in Rep. Bass’ district!
This is good to hear. We don’t hear enough stories like this. I’m in Rep. Henry Waxman’s district, and I have no idea if he had a Town Hall tonight. I wrote to him last week on Syria – haven’t seen anything but a joined Congressional letter opposing strikes – but no other solutions. Disappointing.
My Rep is Congresswoman Barbara Lee. Once again, I am thankful for her thoughtfulness. I can’t abide knee-jerk politicians like

Obama: Diplomatic talks on Syria ‘encouraging,’ but threat remains
….Meanwhile, key senators began to draft language that would incorporate the Russian plan, perhaps authorizing force only if Syria refused to allow an outside entity, most likely the United Nations, to secure its chemical weapons stockpile. It could also require a U.N. resolution condemning Syria for using chemical weapons on its own people.
Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), chairman of the Armed Services Committee, emphasized that the resolution was still being crafted. But he said the goal was to eliminate the threat of Syria using chemical weapons by keeping open the possibility of force, “like the Sword of Damocles over Assad.”
“It’s because of the threat of a strike by the president, because of the possibility that Congress would authorize it, that there’s movement at the U.N. So you’ve got to find a way to keep that pressure on. That’s the key to success at the U.N.,” Levin said….
….“What he’s basically asked is for some time to work this out,” Durbin said, a time frame that would delay any action until next week. “I think that’s reasonable. We want this to end well; we want the end of chemical weapons in Syria. And if we can achieve that through the president’s threatened use of military force, that’s a good thing for safety in the world.”….

Why It’s Big editors.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2013/… The move to remove CW from Syria, through the U.N. is a win on all fronts for @Barackobama via @joshtpm— The Lovely Plains (@DaRiverZkind) September 10, 2013
It allows the entire framework of the discussion to be changed in favor of the international position, it allows a fresh discussion in the UNSC (where, as you point out, Russia or China will have to slow it down or derail it), and it really changes nothing because the al-Assad regime won’t accept it. They’re in a death struggle for survival – their global approval ratings are the least of their challenges, and with Saudi, Turkey and Israel making various threatening noises, Assad and his brother need a big stick to try to deter more aggressive action.
So now a strike, if one actually comes to pass, can be framed not only to punish the regime and deter future CW releases, but also to reinforce international demands that he disarm…

Just completed the Town Hall conference call with my Rep. Karen Bass. She said that she and several CBC members met with POTUS last night and that he was visibly in angst over the Syria situation. Rep. Bass said that she supports the president and hopes that Assad & Putin hears the president loud and clear because he is serious about the CWs. She said that there are several Resolutions being drafted and that we (the public) would be seeing one soon. She said that they were pleased to see Countries coming on board and giving support to President Obama. Oh, she also said that McCain’s resolution wanted to go further with military might (no kidding) and that he had zero chance of it going anywhere.
I love my Representative Karen Bass.

Writing this from the beautiful Oregon coast. My wife and I are celebrating 40 years of married life together. In the President’s speech I saw greatness. He is exercising moral leadership on the deepest values of civilization. He is doing it because it is right. Not because it is
popular but because it is his responsibility to do what is right for America and for humankind. And he is doing it brilliantly!!!
Bill R., that is so wonderful about your marriage. many, many more years of wedded bliss. Also I totally agree that President Obama does do things brilliantly. He is also brilliant.
Congratulations on 40 years together for you and your wife, Bill! I was on the Oregon coast in July – definitely a place for reflection and relaxation. Lovely!
Everything President Obama said he would do, he has done or tried to do, in the face of horrendous opposition. He is an honest man, a truth-teller, and perhaps the most decent President we have ever had. Since he began his campaign in 2007, he has laid out his vision for an Obama Administration and a Congress that functions like a co-equal branch of government. He has told the people of this country they need to participate in their own democracy. He has made it plain that he is willing to listen to all opinions. He has reorganized the Government to the limit of his authority–all to the good. He has attempted to reorganize the country and the world–to the good. He has attempted, on every level, to rid the world of loose nuclear weapons, and indeed, reduce the stockpiles of weapons specifically from the U.S. and Russia. He has brought us ‘half-way’ to a universal single-payer health care system–something Dems have always advocated for, and yet he is criticized. He saved the car industry, killed Bin Laden, and many other large and small things that made us a better, safer nation. If he had been allowed to exercise his full agenda, we would have been far beyond where we stand right now.
I have yet to hear a single apology from his critics, who have been proven wrong on almost every occasion. What more can this man do?
My love and admiration grow daily. I can think of no other person I would rather have as President at this time in our history. Thank God for him.
Amen, zekke. You speak truth.
